I've found myself in a situation where I have to use different domains for the same site.
It's a multilingual website that uses the path for the language so I have something like:
mysite.com/en
mysite.com/es
mysite.com/fr
mysite.com/ru
What I need is something like
mysite.com/en
misitio.es/es
monsite.fr/fr
bladimir.ru/ru
It's an Apache server. We enabled domain aliases and if I enter misitio.es the server redirects the web browser to mysite.com/es but showing misitio.es in the url.
What I would need is each domain to work on their own, not redirecting me, sharing all the content and source code. There should be no differences neither in files or in the database, and the htaccess should be configured to redirect each language (/es, /en, /fr, /ru) to its respective domain (*It's the last thing to do, we have not changed thw htaccess file yet).
I've found this guide for multisites in drupal, but it explains how to build a multisite from zero and my website is already in production, also, I'm not sure on how does it apply to my specific problem.
Is it possible to achieve what I need?
Any advice would be helpful.

I have an installation of prestashop 1.6 on a domain www.mydomain.com and a virtualhost on a server for redirecting to the prestashop/public_html folder. This is my main website working perfect.
Now i would like to clone the installation in another folder prestashop/clone_html and i created an alias on the virtualhost from www.mydomain.com/clone to prestashop/clone_html
Now if i access the clone website the frontend is not working, i get a 404 error and all the links are pointing on the main domain
I tried to change settings.inc.php change the base URI on the database and delete both .htaccess and cache but the links are never changing.
I think maybe the problem is coming from multilanguage redirect?
Do you have any idea what i should try to change?
Thanks
That is a good one! If you want to change the URL of the store and you have already migrated the contents (so no access to the admin is possible or you donĀ“t want to bother), you may do the change directly at the PS table where this information is kept. The name of the table is <prefix>shop_url. Once you access it, the content is self explanatory. You have to play with domain or domain_ssl and then with physical_uri.
Also, using a subdomain as has been suggested in a comment may be a good idea. Depending on your hosting, you may be able to define a subdomain and make it point to a subdirectory. This keeps the physical_uri to / and may avoid other potential problems.
I've just reset my Ubuntu 14.04 LAMP server hosted with digital ocean. Could someone tell me the 'proper' way to do server configuration. My goal is to do everything as clean as possible (and hopefully well structured).
I intend on using the server mainly for programming and data analytics, however I do plan on hosting my website in /var/www/html. I also plan on using letsencrypt/certbot to get an easy SSL. With this in mind, these are the main goals I would like to accomplish:
1) Redirect the website to ALWAYS be served through https AND www.
2) Enable HSTS for the entire website.
3) Enable clean url's (remove .php extensions and what not).
Since I would like all of these properties to be used across the entire website, should the configuration be done inside of the /etc/apache2/ folder? Or should it be done inside of .htaccess?
And if it should be done inside of apache2 configuration, which file should I add it to? And finally, how exactly should it be added? (for example vhost 80/443, inside of a mod_something section, etc).
Thank you in advance, I would appreciate and consider any advice about Apache and htaccess!
Reason for Problem:
I'm working on a website and wanted to work on it without making edits to the live website. My hosting package allows for "infinite" domains. So instead of editing the live website I create a new domain, without purchasing the domain name and am trying to develop with this new domain.
Issue At Hand:
This issue is that the reference file paths don't work anymore and return 404 when trying to load the webpage. My original website directory structure looks like this
cgi-bin
config
public_html
->JSfiles
->CSSfiles
->PHPfiles
The new one is the same structure however when you open the "temporary web address" the URL looks like this
http://217.199.187.199/myTempAddress.com/"
instead of
http://myTempAddress.com/
so when my index.html file looks for /JSfiles/someJSfile.js its requesting
http://217.199.187.199/JSfiles/someJSfile.js
when it needs to be requesting
http://217.199.187.199/myTempAddress.com/JSfiles/someJSfile.js
Things I've Tried Unsuccessfully:
I would really like to fix this by redirecting with the .htaccess file in the root directory on the server. Ive tried using the following directives with no success.
Redirect /217.199.187.199/JSfiles/mustache.min.js http://217.199.187.199/myTempAddress.com/JSfiles/mustache.min.js
Redirect /JSfiles http://217.199.187.199/myTempAddress.com/JSfiles/
Redirect /JSfiles http://217.199.187.199/myTempAddress.com/
Redirect /JSfiles 217.199.187.199/myTempAddress.com/
Question:
How can I redirect the requests to the right location? I need all the the requests to be of the form http://217.199.187.199/myTempAddress.com/someDir/Somefile.ex
You need to read up a bit more on Virtual Hosting in particular name based virtual hosting.
https://httpd.apache.org/docs/current/vhosts/name-based.html
It sounds like your provider might support name based VHosts but what you're trying to do is not taking advantage of that. To do what you want ie have path that points to a different version of your site is best achieved using mod_rewrite. See this
https://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.4/rewrite/remapping.html
You need to make sure that your provided actually supports this.
I have the following URL format:
www.example.com/members/admin/projects/?projectid=41
And I would like to rewrite them to the following format:
www.example.com/avits/projectname/
Project names do not have to be unique when a user creates them therefore I will be checking for an existing name and appending an integer to the end of the project name if a project of the same name already exists. e.g. example.project, example.project1, example.project2 etc.
I am happy setting up the GET request to query the database by project name however I am having huge problems setting up these pretty url's.
I am using Apache with Nginx Admin installed which mens that all static content is served via Nginx without the overhead of apache.
I am totally confused as to whether I should be employing an nginx rewrite rule in my nginx.conf file or standard rewrites in my .htaccess file.
To confuse matters further although this is a rather large custom appliction it is build on top of a wordpress backbone for easy blogging functionality meaning that I also have the built in wordpress rewrite module at my disposal.
I have tried all three methods with absolutely no success. I have read a lot on the matter but simply cannot seem to get anything to work. I am certain this is purely down to a complete lack of understanding on with regards to URL rewriting. Combined with the fact that I don't know which type of rewriting should be applicable in my case means that I am doing nothing more than going round in circles.
Can anyone clear up this matter for me and explain how to rewrite my URLs in the manner described above?
Many thanks.
If you are proxying all the non static file requests to Apache, do the rewrites there - you don't need to do anything on nginx as it will just pass the requests to the back end.
The problem with what you are proposing is that it's not actually a rewrite, a rewrite is taking the first URL and just changing it around or moving the user to another location.
What you need actually takes logic to extrapolate the project name from the project ID.
For example you can rewrite:
www.example.com/members/admin/projects/?projectid=41
To:
www.example.com/avits/41/
Fairly easily, but can you map that /41/ in your app code to change it to /projectname/ - because a URL rewrite can't do that.
I want to redirect all the queries from mobile.mydomain.net to web.mydomain.net, keeping the URL mobile.mydomain.net displayed in the address bar.
The directory structure in my service provider is the following:
/root
-/vrmd
--/homepages
---/myusername
----/mydomain
-----/subdomains
------/web
-------/public
------/mobile
In my service provider configuration the address www.mydomain.net points to /mydomain/, the address web.mydomain.net points to /mydomain/subdomains/web/public/ and the address mobile.mydomain.net points to /mydomain/subdomains/mobile/.
If I echo the value of the $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'] constant in a simple PHP script (/mobile/index.php), it outputs /homepages/myusername/mydomain/subdomains/mobile.
I have some questions:
1) Where should I put the rewrite conditions and rules? In an .htaccess file under /mydomain or better under /mydomain/subdomains/mobile...?
2) Which conditions and rules should I write? For example, I want mobile.mydomain.net/blog to show only the contents of web.mydomain.net/blogs, but not the address.
Can anyone help me?
You can't silently redirect domains like that with the Apache rewrite engine - which is probably a good thing, since this could end up as a pretty nasty security breach if someone was able to upload a malicious .htaccess to your site somehow.
You would be better off implementing a front-facing controller in your mobile site that then included the content and libraries from your main website.
