I'm trying to get 2 redirections set on my htaccess file but I can't make it to work.
The desired output is:
if the user goes to www.mywebsite.com/page1, it gets redirected to /folder/newPage
if the user goes to www.mywebsite.com/page1?a=123, it gets redirected to /folder/anotherPage?a=123
I tried this
RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} ^$
RewriteRule ^/page1$ /folder/newPage [R=301,L]
RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} ^(.*)$
RewriteRule ^/page1(.*)$ /folder/anotherPage$1 [R=301,L]
I also tried something like this:
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^/page1$
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /folder/newPage [R=301,L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^/page1$
RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} ^(.*)$
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /folder/anotherPage%1 [R=301,L]
Note that Rewrite mod is turned on on my apache.
Any idea how to make it work?
Check through the following:
RewriteEngine On is present before all the rules
AllowOverride directive allows your htaccess files to load
htaccess receives URLs without the leading slashes, unlike server config files, or VHosts file.
.* matches 0 or more characters, thus %{QUERY_STRING} ^(.*)$ also matches empty query strings. Change this to .+.
Final rules should be:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} ^$
RewriteRule ^page1$ /folder/newPage [R=301,L]
RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} ^(.+)$
RewriteRule ^page1$ /folder/anotherPage?%1 [R=301,L]

You need to move these 2 rules i.e. before all other rules just below RewriteEngine On line as other rules might be overriding this.
(Based on your comments) Your culprit rule is this rule:
RewriteRule . index.php [L]
Which is actually rewriting every request to index.php and changing value of REQUEST_URI variable to /index.php thus causing this condition to fail:
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^/pages/foo.bar$
From your example, you get redirected to
http://some.site/spam/egg/?pageId=123456
http://another.site/spaming/egging/?pageId=45678
You can use your browser developer tools to see the redirection (in the Network tab).
Maybe the query strings in the redirected URL lead to a 404? You can add a ? at the end of your redirection to clear the query string:

I'm trying to setup a rewrite rule so that any text in place of a subdomain will be parameter one and any text after the first forward slash will be parameter two but I'm struggling with regex and am unsure about rewrite terminology.
For example, if someone requested:
joebloggs.mydomain.com
I would like them to see:
mydomain.com/index.php?site=joebloggs
Also, if someone requested:
joebloggs.mydomain.com/contact
I would like them to see:
mydomain.com/index.php?site=joebloggs&page=contact
By "see" I mean see the page, rather than see the URL - it's a CMS-like project so you can probably see where I'm going with it. Also, I've worked out how to remove www. so that's not an issue :)

I was hoping that would make all non-www urls redirect to the www version, as well as giving a tidy query string on the end. So these urls:

Would both redirect to:
http://www.site.com/test/page
http://www.site.com/another/test/page
Respectively.
However, everything is just redirecting to:
http://www.site.com
What am I doing wrong?
RewriteRule ignores the query string in the url. So you will need to change your rules as follows:

Make sure you include the QSA flag on the first rule
Is it possible to use .htaccess to rewrite a sub domain to a directory?
Example:
http://sub.domain.example/
shows the content of
http://domain.example/subdomains/sub/
Try putting this in your .htaccess file:

For a more general rule (that works with any subdomain, not just sub) replace the last two lines with this:

I'm not a mod_rewrite expert and often struggle with it, but I have done this on one of my sites. It might need other flags, etc., depending on your circumstances. I'm using this:

The line above tells the server to turn on the engine for rewriting URLs.

This line is a condition for the RewriteRule where we match against the HTTP host using a regex pattern. The condition says that if the host is sub.domain.example then execute the rule.

The rule matches http://sub.domain.example/foo and internally redirects it to http://sub.domain.example/folder/foo.

Just make some folder same as sub domain name you need.

I have a subdomain setup as onlinedev.domain.com
I need to use htaccess to rewrite to domain.com/online_content, while still showing onlinedev.domain.com in the address bar (SSL is for onlinedev.domain.com).

I understand that there are typically better ways to do this subdomain work, but without getting into server config and DNS details, I need to do it with htaccess.
And yes, I do need to rewrite to a directory that has a different name than the subdomain.
Well, I figured it out.
The issue was that I was causing an infinite loop.
Once the rewrite had happened, it was still trying to rewrite to the directory.
Here is my new htaccess that took care of it:

RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^$
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} onlinedev\\.domain\\.com$ [NC]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/online_content/
RewriteRule ^(.+) /online_content/$1 [L]
Notice that I added a check to make sure that the REQUEST_URI is not the name of the directory I am rewriting to.
Try this rule:
