Runtime 1004 Workaround - Protect/Unprotect in Worksheet_Change - vba

I've read a few others which partially resolved my issue but being a complete VB amateur I can't get this to work. The worksheet in question is protected so have tried adding in a protect/unprotect command in the code. It will unprotect fine at the start but then encounters problems. Any help would be appreciated.

You have not turned off the Application.EnableEvents property but there is a chance that you will write something to the worksheet. This would retrigger the event handler and the Worksheet_Change event macro would try to run on top of itself.
There is nothing preventing someone from simultaneously clearing the contents of both B11 and B12. Rather than abandoning the processing, accommodate the possibility and process both cells if there are two cells in target.

You might also want to look into the UserInterfaceOnly parameter of the Worksheet.Protect method. Setting this to true allows you to do anything you want in VBA without unprotecting the worksheet.
Addendumm:
If the user can alter the contents of B11:B12 then these cells must not be locked. If they are not locked then there is no need to unprotect the worksheet before (possibly) altering their contents.

Why am I getting a type mismatch error here?

The problem with the type mismatch, is that the Target.Cells is more than one cell. Thus, the Target.Value <> "" throws type mismatch, because multiple cells cannot be compared to "". See the MsgbBox with the number of cells:

Based on the business logic there could be several solutions.
The easiest one is to write
If Target.Cells.CountLarge > 1 Then Exit Sub in the _SelectionChange event.
Another way is to disable events around

I will answer both your questions but in the reverse order so that you can understand it better.
Why is test triggering the Change Event?

When I run the test() sub, I get a type mismatch error on If Not Intersect(Target, Range("K:M")) Is Nothing, as Target wrong type.
Why this is happening?
When the procedure Test triggers the Worksheet_SelectionChange event, your code will fail on the line
If Not Intersect(Target, Range("K:M")) Is Nothing And Target.Value <> "" Then
It is because Target.Value <> "" is the culprit as SpecialCells(xlCellTypeBlanks).Count may return multiple cells.
If you break the above line in 2 lines then you will not get an error

Change cell if other cell contains text vba

I used to have the following code and it used to work but for some reason it no longer works.

Basically if there is data in any cells of column AF then the cell align with the information in column T would mark Closed. For example if AF65 <>"" then T65.value ="Closed"

Get rid of the redundant code and non-specific worksheet references. For example, a Worksheet_Change can be triggered when that worksheet is not the Activesheet; putting in Activesheet when it is not required only confuses the issue.
You also are not disabling events so your sub is going to try to run on top of itself.
This should be closer to what you are attempting to perform.

If your original sub just 'stopped working' then put Application.EnableEvents = True into the VBE's Immediate window and tap [enter]. It is possible that your earlier code crashed with event handling disabled.

Worksheet Change repeating steps [duplicate]

I have reworked this macro for two days in a load of different ways to try to prevent steps from repeating but the range G2 step seems to run 3 or 4 times and the range G3 2 or 3 times. Does anyone have any ideas??

Your Worksheet_Change has succumbed to three of the most common mistakes in an event driven worksheet/workbook sub procedure.
You are not disabling events while making modifications to the worksheet. Each change triggers another event and the Worksheet_Change tries to run on top of itself over and over until it crashes.
Target could be a single cell or many cells. You need to deal with the possibility of Target being many cells by using Intersect to only get the affected cells within your range of possibilities.
If you disable events for any reason, make sure to provide error control that turns them back on if everything goes south. Typically, this can be done just before exiting the Worksheet_Change but not if you are going to use Exit Sub.
Here is my version of your procedure.

Your code is in the Worksheet_Change event. Every time the worksheet is changed this event fires, including when your code changes it

You might need to enable or disable events within the subs you're calling too.
BTW I'd check if you really need those Exit Subs, if not you can just disable events once at the start and re-enable again at the end.

Excel spreadsheet VBA code not working all the way

The code that is running on my excel spreadsheet that I am working on is working fine, expect for when I copy and import information into the protected cells it gives me a type mismatch error and can not figure out how to fix the code.

When you paste a number of values into two or more cells within the C1:C20 range, the Target is more than 1 and you cannot use the Range.Value property of Target.
Typically, you would use something like the following.

The new values are stored in a variant array and then the paste is undone. The old values are stored in another variant array. The new values are walked through and if a zero comes up, it is replaced with the old value. Finally, the revised set of new values is pasted back into the C1:C20 range.
Your sheet must be protected, so you need to unprotect your sheet first:

Exclude first row from macro

I have a macro that puts the current time into a cell upon editing any row. my problem is that this macro also executes for row 1 which are the titles. So it ends up changing the title of a column to a time.
The macro works fine but still changes the title. I tried the following:

The ActiveCell can change to something else after you edit, so use the Target range rather than the ActiveCell. For example, if I hit {enter} to finish my edit, the ActiveCell is now on row 2 rather than 1.

I'm using With syntax to show the same Row you are comparing is the one you are editing. You could still put these on separate lines if you wish.
Also, user Jeeped makes a good point about the Application.EnableEvents = True line. It won't run if the row is 1, so they get turned off indefinitely. Better to test for > 1 and only run your update code on that condition.
If you turn off event handling, provide error control that makes sure that events will be re-enabled.

If you are pasting or filling a large number of values then Target is all of the cells that changed. You need to guard against the top row while everything else receives the timestamp. When Target is more than a single cell, you only want to timestamp once per row.
And you don't want to turn off event handling then exit without turning it back on again.
