I have a variable nodename = v445 and another variable nodepatch=v445-sctpsv
I want to compare as
if { $nodename == ???????} {
}
so here I just want to compare only part before certain - the second variable could contain more than one - in name, so I just want to extract equivalent string to nodename to compare with.
after string manipulation second part should come up like this:
if { $nodename == "v445"} {
proceed } else {
}
Try
set nodename v445
set nodepatch v445-sctpsv
if {[string match $nodename* $nodepatch]} {
proceed
} else {
}
string match does a glob-style match against a string, in this case the string that starts with the value in $nodename and contains zero or more characters is matched against the string $nodepatch.
If you need to ensure that the dash occurs, use string match $nodename-* $nodepatch instead.

Is there an easier approach to convert an Intellij IDEA environment variable into a list of Tuples?
My environment variable for Intellij is
GROCERY_LIST=[("egg", "dairy"),("chicken", "meat"),("apple", "fruit")]
The environment variable gets accessed into Kotlin file as String.

Ideally I'd like to iterate over g_list, first element being ("egg", "dairy") and so on.
And then ("egg", "dairy") is a tuple/pair
I have tried to split g_list by comma that's NOT inside quotes i.e

this gives me first element as [("egg", second element as "dairy")] and so on.

You can create a regular expression to match all strings in your environmental variable.

Then loop through the strings while creating a list of Shopping objects.

Never a good idea to use regex to match parenthesis.
I would suggest a step-by-step approach:
You could first match the name and the value by
(\w+)=(.*)
There you get the name in group 1 and the value in group 2 without caring about any subsequent = characters that might appear in the value.
If you then want to split the value, I would get rid of start and end parenthesis first by matching by
(?<=\[\().*(?=\)\])
(or simply cut off the first and last two characters of the string, if it is always given it starts with [( and ends in )])
Then get the single list entries from splitting by
\),\(
(take care that the split operation also takes a regex, so you have to escape it)
And for each list entry you could split that simply by
,\s*
or, if you want the quote character to be removed, use a match with
\"(.*)\",\s*\"(.*)\"
where group 1 contains the key (left of equals sign) and group 2 the value (right of equals sign)

In the list above there are two strings I want to check for when this function receives a record.
The failedRecord.record string does contain what I want "value":"OUT" and it's also within the list above. So why is contains not working here? it keeps bouncing out to the else statement.
You can use any() in the list and pass a predicate:
{x -> searchString.contains(x)}
The searchString.contains() will search x as a substring inside searchString for each x representing the elements in the list

In my Parse Class, I have a column of Names. I would like to query for all names that contain searchString = "om". The query should return all names that contain "om" such as `Tom, Dom, Rom, etc.)
I've tried:

but Parse doesn't accept contains as a search parameter.
Seems like queries only accept exact strings
For substring matching, you should be using whereKey:containsString:

That should return any NamesClass object where Name has a substring equal to "om". So, Tom, Dominique, and Thomas will be returned. Frank won't.
If the title isn't clear; I want to be able to select any character from textbox without making some complex loops-dependent code (I can do that one). For example, let's consider this text is entered in a textbox:

Where the string $objUser.Telephone can be empty. If it's empty, how can I convert it to [DBNull]::Value?
I tried:

But that gives me the error:
Exception calling "ExecuteNonQuery" with "0" argument(s): "Failed to convert parameter value from a ResultPropertyValueCollection to a String."
And if I convert it to a string, it inserts an empty string "", and not DBNull.
How can this be accomplished?

In PowerShell, you can treat null/empty strings as a boolean.
$x = $null
if ($x) { 'this wont print' }
$x = ""
if ($x) { 'this wont print' }
$x = "blah"
if ($x) { 'this will' }
So.... having said that you can do:
$Parameter.Value = $(if ($x) { $x } else { [DBNull]::Value })
But I'd much rather wrap this up in a function like:
function CatchNull([String]$x) {
if ($x) { $x } else { [DBNull]::Value }
}

Many years later, let me clarify:
Josh's answer shows a helpful simplification for testing strings for emptiness (relying on PowerShell's implicit to-Boolean conversion[1]), but it is unrelated to Tommy's (the OP's) problem.
Instead, the error message
"Failed to convert parameter value from a ResultPropertyValueCollection to a String."
implies that it is the non-null case that caused the problem, because $objDbCmd.Parameters["#telephone"].Value expects either a string value or [DBNull]::Value, whereas $objUser.Telephone is of type [ResultPropertyValueCollection], i.e. a collection of values.
Thus, in the non-null case, a string value must be assigned, which must be derived from the collection; one option is to take the first collection element's value, another would be to join all values with a separator to form a single string, using, e.g., [string]::Join(';', $objUser.Telephone) or, if joining the elements with spaces is acceptable (not a good idea with multiple phone numbers), simply with "$($objUser.Telephone)".[2]
Detecting an empty collection via [string]:IsNullOrEmpty() actually worked, despite the type mismatch, due to how PowerShell implicitly stringifies collections when passing a value to a [string] typed method parameter.[2]
Similarly, using implicit to-Boolean conversion works as expected with collections too: an empty collection evaluates to $false, a non-empty one to $true (as long as there are either at least two elements or the only element by itself would be considered $true[1])
Therefore, one solution is to use the first telephone number entry:
$objDbCmd.Parameters["#telephone"].Value = if ($objUser.Telephone) {

Note: If $objUser.Telephone[0] directly returns a [string], you can omit the .ToString() call.
