I have a elements that have values in DATETIME format in column 'Date Created'.
I would like to be able to extract value how long time ago it was from time at which query is executed (as a reference take GETDATE())
When executing this:
UPDATE #LPs
SET LastUsed = (GETDATE() - DateCreated)
I am getting 1900-01-01, I believe that is due to SQL Server limitations for minimal DATETIME.
How should I right is so I can get values like "2 years 3 months", "2 months" (any datetime format)?
Sql server does not have a built in function that returns date differences as a formatted string like you want, but it does have a DATEDIFF function that will return the number of date parts between two dates:
DECLARE #Now datetime = GETDATE(),
#Date datetime = GETDATE() + 5 -- five days from now
SELECT #Now as Now,
#Date as Date,
DATEDIFF(Day, #Now, #Date) As DateDiff
You can get the number of months between the dates and calculate the string yourself using the modulu operator
SELECT DATEDIFF(day, DateCreated, GETDATE())
FROM table

NPD.CreatedOn is defined as a datetime datatype column (in SQL Server).

Don't use things like DATEDIFF in the WHERE on your columns, such queries aren't SARGable and thus can (will) perform poorly. If you want rows where the date is on or after the start of the month 6 months ago then do the date logic on GETDATE()/SYSDATETIME()/etc:
SQL Server doesn't have a "start of month" function, but you can use EOMONTH and then add a day:
SELECT *
FROM dbo.NPDMaster NPD
WHERE NPD.CreatedOn >= DATEADD(DAY, 1, EOMONTH(GETDATE(),-7));
You don't need to convert the datetime values to text. DATEDIFF() expects datetime values as second and third argument:
SELECT *
FROM NPDMaster NPD
WHERE DATEDIFF(month, NPD.CreatedOn, GETDATE()) <= 6
The actual reason for the error (as is explained in the documentation), is that ...DATEDIFF implicitly casts string literals as a datetime2 type.

Your date conversion is specifically returning the difference in days. The dateadd is adding the number of days between date 0 (which is actually 01-01-1900) and your UTC date onto a different date 0. This means that the hours and minutes are completely ignored.
If you want to include the hours and minutes you just need to drop the dateadd(...datediff( part:

Explanation:

108 is formatting/giving us the required portion i.e time in this case.

If you wrote varchar(7) there, it will give you 00:00:0
If you wrote varchar(6) there, it will give you 00:00:
If you wrote varchar(15) there, it will still give you 00:00:00 because it is giving output of just time portion.

I thought I'd add a "pure" option which only requires datetime operations and works with SQL Server 2005+:
SELECT DATEADD(dd, -DATEDIFF(dd, 0, mydatetime), mydatetime)
This calculates the difference (in whole days) between date zero (1900-01-01) and the given date and then subtracts that number of days from the given date, thereby setting its date component to zero.
Try this in SQL Server 2008:
select *
from some_table t
where convert(time,t.some_datetime_column) = '5pm'
If you want take a random datetime value and adjust it so the time component is 5pm, then in SQL Server 2008 there are a number of ways. First you need start-of-day (e.g., 2011-09-30 00:00:00.000).
One technique that works for all versions of Microsoft SQL Server as well as all versions of Sybase is to use convert/3 to convert the datetime value to a varchar that lacks a time component and then back into a datetime value:

So I think what you meant was that you needed the date, not the time. You can do something like this to get a date with 5:00 as the time:
SELECT CONVERT(VARCHAR(10), GetDate(), 110) + ' 05:00:00'
This should strip away the date part:

and return a datetime with a default date of 1900-01-01.

If you are storing dates as characters -- which is not recommended -- you should at least use ISO format: YYYY-MM-DD hh:mm:ss. This makes the date useful for sorting and comparisons ("<" works, ">" works, "between" works as well as equals).
To extract the date, you can then use left(datestr, 10). In your format, you would use:
where left(datestr, 9) = '01-Jan-13'
If you are storing the fields as a datetime or smalldatetime, you may think they are stored as a string. They are not. They are stored as some number of days since some particular date, with day parts stored as fractional days. If you are using SQL Server 2005 or greater, then the best way is:
where cast(datetime as date) = '2013-01-01' -- I recommend ISO formats, even for constants. '20130101' is even better
