I am trying to insert the number_of orders into storiacloud.schl_storia_school_status_try.The calculations are done in another table (storiacloud.vw_storia_oms_orders). The promblem is that it is trying to insert school_ucn as well but i am just using that for group by and do not want to insert that. Can somebody please help
INSERT INTO storiacloud.schl_storia_school_status_try
(no_of_orders)
select school_ucn,count(otc_order_number)
from storiacloud.vw_storia_oms_orders
group by school_ucn;
You can just remove it from the select:
INSERT INTO storiacloud.schl_storia_school_status_try (no_of_orders)
select count(otc_order_number)
from storiacloud.vw_storia_oms_orders
group by school_ucn;
It will still group, just not report it. I'm not sure what use a bunch of random numbers in a table is though.
... or add the missing column in the INSERT's list of columns:
INSERT INTO storiacloud.schl_storia_school_status_try
(no_of_orders, [YOUR_NB_ORDER_COLUMN] )
select school_ucn,count(otc_order_number)
from storiacloud.vw_storia_oms_orders
group by school_ucn;

INSERT INTO NEWTABLE
(Street,
Number,
NuDate,
XValue)
SELECT
a1.Street,
a2.Number,
a2.NuDate,
a2.XValue
FROM
ABC.dbo.Faculty a1 INNER JOIN
ABC.dbo.Faculty2 a2
ON a1.NameID = a2.NameID
WHERE
a1.Bologna = 'True'
GROUP BY
a1.Street,
a2.Number,
a2.NuDate,
a2.XValue
In this completely fictitious SQL statement, is the GROUP by needed to insert properly into NEWTABLE? and/or does the group by need to match up perfectly with the INSERT INTO for this statement to work properly?
EDIT: Sorry, I realized I had the wrong values for the GROUP BY statement, they're supposed to match the INSERT INTO
In this completely fictitious SQL statement, is the GROUP by needed to insert properly into NEWTABLE?
It's not necessary if you don't mind duplicates
If you don't want duplicate rows then yes, you'll need to use GROUP BY (or DISTINCT):
SELECT DISTINCT
a1.Street,
a2.Number,
a2.NuDate,
a2.XValue
does the group by need to match up perfectly with the INSERT INTO for this statement to work properly?
Yes, the selected columns must match.
There are cases when what you group by doesn't match what you select but that's when you aggregating:
SELECT
column1, -- no aggregation, must match
sum(column2) -- aggregation, so does not need to match
FROM a
GROUP BY column1
I am not very experienced in SQL statements and I am trying to combine a couple of statements to have less traffic to the db.(and to make sure no other actions can happen inbetween)...
I have two tables:
Table: R_LOTS
a.o. 2 columns: PK_R_LOT and LOTCODE
Table: R_LOTTRACKING
Columns: FK_R_LOT,TIMESTAMP,FK_MAGLOCATIES
I use the statement:
INSERT INTO R_LOTTRACKING (FK_R_LOT,TIMESTAMP,FK_MAGLOCATIES) VALUES (?,CURRENT_TIMESTAMP,?).
On the questionmarks I can fill in the values to send.
However, as you can imagine, I do not have the FK_R_LOT but I have the LOTCODE (of R_LOT).. Of course I can get the FK_R_LOT with a seperate SELECT PK_R_LOT FROM R_LOT WHERE LOTCODE=?; but is there a way to combine these statements?
I have seen some examples but then all information seems to come from the R_LOT table but I could not find a combination of VALUES and SELECT.
Summary:
I know: LOTCODE and FK_MAGLOCATIES
How to combine the statements to insert the row:
INSERT INTO R_LOTTRACKING (FK_R_LOT,TIMESTAMP,FK_MAGLOCATIES) VALUES (?,CURRENT_TIMESTAMP,?)
SELECT PK_R_LOT FROM R_LOT WHERE LOTCODE=?
Use a subquery:
INSERT INTO R_LOTTRACKING ( FK_R_LOT, ... )
VALUES ( (SELECT PK_R_LOT FROM R_LOT WHERE LOTCODE = ?), ... );
or use an insert select:
INSERT INTO R_LOTTRACKING ( FK_R_LOT, ... )
SELECT PK_R_LOT, ... FROM R_LOT WHERE LOTCODE = ?;
I need to insert data into two different tables via a select statement.This select statement is calling an inline TVF.
What I have so far is :
INSERT INTO #Temp2 (RowNumber, ValFromUser, ColumnName, ValFromFunc, FuncWeight, percentage)
SELECT
RowNumber, #hospitalname, 'hospitalname',
PercentMatch, #constVal, PercentMatch * #constVal
FROM
dbo.Matchhospitalname (#hospitalname)
But there are certain columns that need to be supplied to a permanent table dbo.Cache.
Above mentioned query is called multiple times in the procedure.
Insert into dbo.Cache(StringSearched, ColName, RowId, PercentMatch)
select
ValFromUser, ColumnName, RowNumber, Max(ValFromFunc) as Percentage
from
#Temp2
group by
ValFromUser, ColumnName, RowNumber
Adding data into dbo.Cache separately as above would make all the previously added values to be added as many times as this statement is executed which is of course not desirable.
May be if it is not possible at all to add data to two tables via one select, we can do something like adding only those rows that were added in last insert statement only ?
Can I get some directions on this, please?
Edit : As suggested, I tried using OUTPUT INTO this way but Group by seems to be at the wrong place.The grouped rowsare to be inserted only in dbo.Cache and not in #Temp2
How do I solve this ?
INSERT INTO #Temp2 (RowNumber,ValFromUser,ColumnName,ValFromFunc,FuncWeight,percentage)OUTPUT
INSERTED.ValFromUser,
INSERTED.ColumnName,
INSERTED.RowNumber,
MAX(INSERTED.ValFromFunc)
INTO dbo.CACHE
(StringSearched, ColName, RowId, PercentMatch)
Group By Inserted.ValFromUser, Inserted.ColumnName, Inserted.RowNumber
SELECT RowNumber,#firstname,'firstname',PercentMatch,#constVal,PercentMatch * #constVal FROM dbo.MatchFirstName(#firstname)
You can do it via an output clause or more typically you can put a trigger on a table. In other words you can create an after insert trigger on temp table '#temp2'. I have never seen a trigger on a temp table but its possible. You will have to recreate the trigger every time the temp table is recreated. Remember that #temp2 will only exist (and be visible) in the session that it is created in.
How could I, in SQL Server 2008, write a SQL statement that would insert one row for each distinct value it finds in one column in the same table?
Edit:
The table I want to add rows to the same table I'm checking.
I have normalized table with a column [Name], and [Hobby], so how do I insert one new hobby for each name?
Input greatly appreciated =]
try
INSERT INTO TargetTable (SomeColumn)
SELECT DISTINCT TheSourceColumn From SomeSourceTable;
IF that is not what you are looking for please provide more details like what the data model looks like etc.
UPDATE - after edit from OP:
I am not sure that you data model is good but you can do this:
INSERT INTO TheTable (NAME, HOBBY)
SELECT DISTINCT X.NAME, #SomeHOBBY FROM TheTable X;
You could use something like
Insert into table1
Select distinct col1 from tabl2
The above should work as long as table1 has just one column of the same data type as col1 of tabl2
I am trying to update one table from another, im able to update fine as long as the customer record exists, but there are some entries that dont.
To solve this i've tried running the following insert
SELECT *
INTO SalBudgetCust
FROM SalBudgetCust_temp
WHERE NOT EXISTS (
SELECT Customer
FROM SalBudgetCust
WHERE Customer = SalBudgetCust_temp.Customer
)
but im prompted with
There is already an object named 'SalBudgetCust' in the database.
Im stuck at this point... could anyone offer a little guideance?
SELECT INTO implicitly creates the table you name. You should instead use INSERT INTO ... SELECT * FROM ..., so that the existing table is used.
It should be INSERT INTO instead of SELECT * INTO ... like
INSERT INTO SalBudgetCust SELECT * FROM SalBudgetCust_temp
WHERE NOT EXISTS
(
SELECT Customer FROM SalBudgetCust WHERE Customer = SalBudgetCust_temp.Customer
)
The general syntax to insert data of one table into another is :
INSERT INTO new_table
SELECT * FROM old_table
WHERE some_condition;
Where, new_table is the table where you want to insert data, old_table is table from where you are fetching data and some_condition is the expression / condition based upon which you want to fetch data from old table.
You may use other clauses like order by, group by, and even sub queries after where clause.
May refer this SQL INSERT INTO and it's subsequent pages.
