I have a simple userform for entering data into a macro:
Everything works fine, except for one thing - I want the commandbuttons at the bottom to get focus, after the textboxes are populated from a different form which pops up when either textbox is clicked.
Stepping through the code this does indeed happen, but somehow focus is returned to the textbox before the code ends.
Googling about a bit, it seems that the issue may be that there is a frame around the textboxes, but I can't find any way to actually solve the problem.
The code for the two textboxes is next to similar, and looks like this:
Private Sub tbxTil_Enter()
DATA_TO_CALENDAR = Me.tbxTil.Value
DatePickerForm.Show
Me.tbxTil.Value = Format(DATA_FROM_CALENDAR, "dd.mmm. yyyy")
If Me.cmdOk.Enabled Then
Me.cmdOk.SetFocus
Else
Me.cmdAvbryt.SetFocus
End If
End Sub
Assuming the problem is what I believe it is, is there any way to set the focus to an element outside the frame you are currently in? If not, what is the actual issue with my code?

I have some very (very) basic MS Access knowledge. I'm trying to expand a bit into either VBA or macros as I'd like to put in some conditional visibility for my form. Basically, I have a checkbox. If it's checked, I want three or four more fields to pop up. Someone was able to point me to a basic VBA formula of if (this checkbox) = true then, (fieldx).visible = true, else, (fieldx).visibility = false, end if.
But I'm so new to this that I need more help and explanation. I tried putting it in but couldn't get it to work (no error message, just nothing changed at all).
Specific questions:
-Does this formula seem right?
-If I want multiple fields to be visible, can I combine them into one formula or should I create a new "if" statement for all?
-Where do I enter this code? I'm running the Office 365 version. For all I know, I'm not even putting it in the right place.
-How do I determine the field names to replace the (this checkbox) and (fieldx) in the formula? I tried entering the name I title the fields as, but with the spaces in the name I got an error message, and without the spaces nothing happened. Is there a specific naming convention to turn the field names into formula-appropriate titles? Is the name listed somewhere?
-Once I get the formula entered, is there something I have to do to get it to run/take effect? I tried saving, closing and reopening with no changes.
-Is this the best way to go about this?
If there's anything else you think I should know, I would love to hear it - but please keep in mind I'm very new to this so if you could keep it at "dummy" or ELI5 levels of explanation, I'd appreciate it!
after creating a form with 4 textboxes and a checkbox put the form in design mode (lower right corner has design mode selected, select a textbox and hit property sheet on the ribbon (or f4).
On the property sheet note the visible property. set the visible property to false. Now the textbox will be invisible when the form starts.
Tip you can select all the textboxes at the same time and set their properties all at once.
Every control on the form and even the various parts of the form have properties you can set and play with. For instance you can give any name you want to any control. On the property sheet go to the other tab and set the name property.
Tip: choose a name you you will remember without having to look it up and describes the controls function.
Next select the checkbox (not the checkbox's label). On the property sheet go to the event tab and select the on click event. hit the ellipsis and choose code builder. Access is Event Driven. We want the textboxes to appear when the checkbox is selected so we put that code in the checkbox click event.
after choosing code builder we get the code window where we can browse among all the events for all our forms. for now all you should see is something like:
Private Sub mycheckbox_Click()
End Sub
So insert some code to handle the checkboxes like:
Private Sub mycheckbox_Click()
If mycheckbox = True Then
txtbox1.Visible = True
txtbox2.Visible = True
txtbox3.Visible = True
txtbox4.Visible = True
Else
txtbox1.Visible = False
txtbox2.Visible = False
txtbox3.Visible = False
txtbox4.Visible = False
End If
End Sub
now when the checkbox is not checked no textboxes are visible.
but when the checkbox is checked they appear
I have a problem with the snippet of the code I have got to extend and improve. It is not my original code and I cannot change the logic that much of it, just to be clear.
I have one main form called MDIServer, which has a timer set for every second. In Timer.Tick I have some other code which works fine (timer is running okay). Newly, I had to check there, if one form is Active and if so, change some stuff (labels text and tags) in that form and refresh it.
I add there this code:
If IsActiveForm("frmName") Then
frmName.ChangeSomething()
End If
The Sub ChangeSomething is, how you can see, located in the form I want to refresh and do the changes. In that function I simply change the label text and tags of few controls.
My question is: Form is not refreshing => labels are not visible changed, why?
I think I tried already almost anything with Refresh() function in the ChangeSomething() function or in the timer after I called this function. Also I tried to add there new timer (in frmName) and do the changes there, which works perfectly with
Label.Text = "something new"
Label.Refresh()
So I guess problem is somewhere with the refreshing form from Timer in different form. I also tried to do it with my own InvokeReguired() function etc...
P.S. When I am debugging the code, labels and tags are changing and every single function which has to be called, is called, but it is just not visible on the form itself.
EDIT Info
formName is not declared in MDIServer explicitely and in this case and many other cases, forms are used as default instances. Timer is from System.Windows.Forms.Timer. Also MDIServer is not a MDIParent of the formName and I cannot use Me.ActiveMdiChild Is. Lets just say, these two forms are not dependent on each other in any way.. and everything is done through name of the form (default instance, so nothing like Dim frm As Form and frm = frmName).
I would be really glad for any tip or anything :D
Thanks guys,
Vojta
So, I fixed my problem after some research and the problem was (expected) that I am not calling the subroutine ChangeSOmething() for one specific instance of the form frmName. So I had to change my code, that I will call it exactly for the instance which is active and visible.
New code looks like this:
Dim frmCollection = Windows.Forms.Application.OpenForms
Dim listfrmname = frmCollection.OfType(Of frmName).ToList()
If listfrmName.Count > 0 Then
Dim tmpFrm As frmName = listVZT15.Last()
tmpFrm.ChangeSomething()
End If
I also could not use combination of frmCollection.OfType(Of frmName).Any and frmCollection.Item("frmName"), because when I was closing the form and opening again, it created new and new instances (I dont know, why it is not closing the old one, but like I said, it is not my code). So the logic is, to list all open forms of the needed type, and then take the last instance from that list and for that instance call the subroutine. Also Me.Refresh() is placed in the subroutine ChangeSomething() itself.
Thanks everyone for help, it surely helped me to understand, how the instances works here.
I desperately need help with a game I am making. For a bit of context, i am making a memory game and i have the following piece of code that is being troublesome. I have a bunch of labels on the form, 16 to be exact, with 1 randomly generated symbol placed in each. Each symbol appears in the labels twice.
------------------------------Continued----------------------------------------
'MsgBox("hello") 'used to check if the second inccorect press shows up - it does show but instantly changes colour
'''''''''''''''''NEED SOME CODE THAT PAUSES IT HERE'''''''''''''''
labels(0).ForeColor = Color.DarkRed
sender.ForeColor = Color.DarkRed
End If
flips = 1
End If
End If
tmrmemory.Enabled = True ' starts the timer after the user clicks the first label
End Sub
What's supposed to happen is that when the labels clicked don't match, it should show both the clicked labels for a short period before changing them both back to "DarkRed" which is the colour of the form's background.
I have tried using a timer but then i can't use sender.forecolor=color.darkred because it is not declared globally.
I have also tried using the command Threading.Thread.Sleep(500) but it still doesn't show the second incorrect click. I know that the code i have used works because when i use the message box, i can see both symbols and when the two clicks are correct, it stays.
Threading.Thread.Sleep(500) will actually pause your code for half a second. However during this time it won't do anything, not even refresh your controls. To get the effect you want, you need to call the YourControl.Refresh method before calling Threading.Thread.Sleep to force the control to redraw immediately.
On a side note, I would advise you not to call Threading.Thread.Sleep on UI thread. It will give a feeling of program hang. Instead do your work on a separate thread. You can either do all the work yourself right from creating a separate thread to destroying it, or use the BackgroundWorker control which has all the functionality built in.
Here is the link to an article I wrote a long time ago regarding BackgroundWorker that might be useful for you:
http://www.vbforums.com/showthread.php?680130-Correct-way-to-use-the-BackgroundWorker
Declare a variable outside the sub that stores what label should be flipped when the timer ends.
Label click sets
storedLabel = sender
Timer tick sets storedLabel.ForeColor = Color.DarkRed
First of all I would like to thank all of you guys. Maybe you did not notice but you help me to grasp VBA to some level from scratch. I am still in learning process so I may be missing something really simple, please be gentle :)
First of all I would like to give a small backgroud update about my issue. I have been writing a small program to scan incoming parts to my work to be able to keep inventory status. Latest look of the program is like below:
And numbers on the picture are my nightmares lately:
1. Scanned Part Number: This is the textbox where scanner inputs the value. After I receive the input I immidietly convert that data to a variable and clear the textbox value as below:
Private Sub PN_CurrentScan_KeyDown(ByVal KeyCode As MSForms.ReturnInteger, ByVal Shift As Integer)
If KeyCode = 13 Then
EnteredPN = Replace(PN_CurrentScan.Value, Chr(32), "", 1) '<---PN_CurrentScan is the name of text box
EnteredPN = Left(EnteredPN, 12)
PN_CurrentScan.Value = ""
After making some corrections on the scanned data I basically write it to a sheet in the workbook. Then I also have a pivot table in the same workbook which uses this scanned data as source and counts how many parts scanned from each part number.
2. Current Status: This ListBox contains all the part numbers scanned (Coming from the pivot table mentioned above) and waiting to be scanned (Coming from another worksheet). Then it refreshes it self every time a new part is scanned.
3. ListBox Scroll Bar: Since I have very long part number list it is not possible for me to fit everything on the screen that is why listbox creates this scroll bar.
Enough with the background I think :)
So if we come to my concern. Since my collages using cordless scanner to do this operation sometimes they don't have the chance to see the screen so they can not understand if the cursor is on the "Scanned Part Number Text Box" or not. That is why I need focus to be on that box no matter what happens (Of course we can not do anything if warehouse burns down, earth quake or tsunami hits the place but let do not think about those).
WHAT I HAVE TRIED:
First of all I disabled all the remaining objects from properties window
Then I diabled tab stops of all controls:
Dim contr As Control
For Each contr In ScannerInterface.Controls
On Error Resume Next
contr.TabStop = False
Next
ScannerInterface.PN_CurrentScan.TabStop = True
Added setfocus property to all button clicks:
Me.PN_CurrentScan.SetFocus
Added setfocus property to listbox click:
Private Sub CurrentStatus_List_Click()
Me.PN_CurrentScan.SetFocus
End Sub
Added set focus to enter and exit events of listbox however this did not work:
Private Sub CurrentStatus_List_Enter()
Me.PN_CurrentScan.SetFocus
End Sub
Private Sub CurrentStatus_List_Exit(ByVal Cancel As MSForms.ReturnBoolean)
Me.PN_CurrentScan.SetFocus
End Sub
So, with all these counter measures I have managed to improve up to somepoint, only concern remaining is when I click on the scroll bar next to the listbox, text box lose focus and without clicking in the textbox I could not manage to set the focus again. I tried all events with listbox non of them worked. Is there any way to solve this problem or do I need to deal with this? Thanks in advance for your supports.
SOLUTION:
Thanks to #Rory we have managed to solve my problem. As he noticed and explained in the answer below, both my textbox and listbox were in frames. I have tried several setfocus options but I always gave the focus to the textbox. However, solution was to give the focus to the frame which was containing the target textbox:
Private Sub CurrentStatus_Frame_Enter() '<-- Enter event of the frame which contains listbox
Me.PN_CurrentScan.SetFocus '<-- Setfocus to target textbox
Me.Scanned_Frame.SetFocus '<-- Setfocus to frame which contains target textbox
End Sub
Having (eventually) noticed that both of your controls are inside container Frame controls, you can actually use the Enter event of the Frame that contains the listbox to set focus to the Frame that contains the textbox, rather than to the textbox itself.
I have a situation in which text in one of the cells is massive.When I change the contents of this cell the previous value becomes a comment to that cell.Now the problem is, this text is so big that I cannot see complete text.If I use .Shape.Textframe.Autosize=true then I have to go on browsing till god knows when to see the text.
What I need to do is whatever and however big the text might be in Commnet.text,I want to show it in one and one place only.i.e when I hover on comment.
Place a TextBox where you will on your worksheet adjusted to the size you want, this still reads the comment although this is not on a hover, but perhaps will help
Private Sub Worksheet_SelectionChange(ByVal Target As Range)
If Not ActiveCell.Comment Is Nothing Then
ActiveSheet.Shapes("Text Box 1").TextFrame.Characters.Text = ActiveCell.Comment.Text
Else: ActiveSheet.Shapes("Text Box 1").TextFrame.Characters.Text = ""
End If
End Sub
Actually after considering this further you really are trying to get comment to act as you want. So I recommend Resize all comments in the selected area and on the same link further down the page Show Excel Comments in Centre of Active Window.
These get you closer to what i think you want.
How about a pop-up text box? I.e., the user clicks on the cell and a pop-up form with the text appears. The best part is you can make the pop-up as big as you want.
Personally, I would make the pop-up resizable, but with only the Close button at top. I can't think of a way to trigger this form with just a mouse rollover, but I'm only using 2003. Later versions allow you more tricks.
xlSheet.Range(xlSheet.Cells(rowCount,1), xlSheet.Cells(rowCount,8)).Merge
xlSheet.Range(xlSheet.Cells(rowCount,1), xlSheet.Cells(rowCount,8)).HorizontalAlignment = 1
xlSheet.Range(xlSheet.Cells(rowCount,1), xlSheet.Cells(rowCount,8)).WrapText = True
xlSheet.Range(xlSheet.Cells(rowCount,1), xlSheet.Cells(rowCount,8)).RowHeight=45
