How To Make Part of Web View Slightly Translucent? - objective-c

In Objective-C with Mac OSX Cocoa, is there any way to make a DIV on a WebView slightly translucent so that the desktop applications behind the window bleed through slightly, but only on that DIV and not the rest of the WebView?
Or perhaps I can make the whole WebView translucent, but turn it off for all DIVs except one DIV?
I have a WebView loading a web page. In the web page, I have a sidebar on the left, and then an IFRAME on the right. I click items on the sidebar and they change the IFRAME pages on the right. It's this sidebar that I want to make slightly translucent.
In my AppDelegate.m, I have this so far, and my HTML and BODY tags are set to background:none, and my sidebar is set to background:rgba(0,0,0,0.5), but all I end up seeing is a grey sidebar background. It's like the webview itself wants to ensure that it's background is set to a color other than clear.

Setting up translucency:
Set the styleMask of your NSWindow subclass to NSFullSizeContentViewWindowMask (so that the translucency will also be visible in the titlebar area, leave this out and the titlebar area will be blank)
Set the self.titlebarAppearsTransparent = true (hides the titlebar default graphics)
Add the code bellow to your NSWindow subclass: (you should now have a translucent window)

Yes, just set the drawsBackground property of your WebView instance to NO, then make sure to fill the parts of the page you want opaque using CSS.

Creating a custom title bar on a standard NSWindow

I've been trying to build a specific look for my menubar app.
I've been using a NSWindow with a NSBorderlessWindowMask style mask and setting [window setOpaque:NO] and [window setBackgroundColor:[NSColor clearColor]]. That gives me a blank canvas which works great for the title bar.
Now I'm having problems with the view-based NSTableView I'm using for the listing. How can I clip the NSTableCellViews to the window's rounded corners?
I started out just having a custom view wrapping the NSTableView, drawing the background with rounded corners. Using [view addClip:path] doesn't clip child views though.
I've also tried using a [view setWantsLayer:YES] with a mask. That worked great, but the table view cells would sporadically glitch out. It seems that having a NSScrollView be a child of a layer is a known problem:
My current view structure looks something like:
NSWindow
- MyTitleBarView
- MyBackgroundView
- NSScrollView
- NSTableView
I found one way to do it:
The trick is to keep the window style as the default and not set NSBorderlessWindowMask. Then you can add your custom title bar view to the window's theme frame like so:
NSView *themeFrame = [[window contentView] superview];
NSView *firstSubview = [[themeFrame subviews] objectAtIndex:0];
[titleBarView setAutoresizingMask:(NSViewMinYMargin | NSViewWidthSizable)];
[themeFrame addSubview:titleBarView positioned:NSWindowBelow relativeTo:firstSubview];
This basically just puts your custom title bar view on top of the standard title bar. You'll probably have to do some rejiggering to the view frames and window buttons. See INAppStoreWindow for some code examples of this.
The INAppStoreWindow project says that this method doesn't use any private APIs, and thus is able to be used on the App Store.
If you require the window to be transparent, you can just set the following on the window:
[window setOpaque:NO];
[window setBackgroundColor:[NSColor colorWithCalibratedWhite:1.0 alpha:0.5]];

Rotating UITabBarController Icon

I have an UITabBar in my application. One of the tab bar icons looks like a loading symbol. When the user presses the loading button I want the icon to spin/rotate until the loading is done. Should I use UIImageView to animate or something else? How should I make this happen?
Jacos, unfortunately you cannot do that with the UITabBarController and manipulate the tabBarController's tabBar properties. My best bet would be that you use a UIToolBar and assign a black color and make it appear like a tabBar and have buttons added in them as a subView so that they look like tabBarItems.
Its much more customizable, and you can even provide a scrolling experience and add more buttons to it.

The main point is to get the view for desired UITabBarItem and the get the UIImageView from it in viewDidLoad:
UIView *plusView = self.tabBar.subviews[1];
self.plusImageView = plusView.subviews.firstObject;
self.plusImageView.contentMode = UIViewContentModeCenter;
Then in didSelectItem method you can do this:

My code only rotate the image view for 45 degrees but you can change as you wish.
I guess you could change the UITabBarItem's icon on a timer, but that seems pretty kludgey. You would have to pre-render each frame of your "loading" icon rather than rotate an ImageView.
Another hackey solution would be to add your ImageView to the UIWindow and move it on top of the TabBarController's TabBar (adding it to the TabBar itself is asking for trouble).
You shouldn't try to animate the actual UIImageView within the UITabBarController. I would take this approach:
Set the image for the relevant tab to nil or a blank image.
Create a UIActivityIndicatorView and add it over the tab bar. Position it over the correct tab.
[self.tabBarController.tabBar addSubview:activityIndicatorView];
When your loading task has completed, restore the normal image to the tab and remove the activityIndicator from the tab bar.

Is there Any way to imitate Lion's Launchpad?

I have been struggling to imitate Launchpad.
At the beginning I thought about making NSWindow bgcolor transparent:

But now I realized it's way more ideal to
capture wallpaper
blur it and make it bg-image for NSWindow or a view
Rather than hiding all the opened windows and menubar, which was the first idea I had have come with (Still not sure with better, if you had any better idea...).

Fade-in to fullscreen view
Click somewhere blank or press ESC to fade-out
Are those possible to achieve without using private APIs?

To get an image of the desktop background, use:

You can blur the image using CIFilter. Here's a Apple doc describing how to apply filters.
And then you can load that image into a color and set that as the background color for the window. Additionally, set the window to have no style mask (no close buttons, title frame, etc.), cover the screen, and be in front of everything except the dock:
[yourWindow setBackgroundColor:[NSColor colorWithPatternImage:theDesktopImage]];
[yourWindow setStyleMask:NSBorderlessWindowMask];
[yourWindow setLevel:kCGDockWindowLevel - 1];
[yourWindow setFrame:[[NSScreen mainScreen] frame] display:YES];
To have the window fade in, you can use NSWindow's animator proxy. (Replace 1.0 with 0.0 to make it fade out.)
[[yourWindow animator] setAlphaValue:1.0];
Of course you could customize that a bit more with things like CoreAnimation, but this should work just fine.
To handle background clicking, I suggest making a subclass of NSView where you -orderOut: your window on -mouseDown:. Then put an instance of that subclass that spans the entire frame of your window.
Also, NSViews sometimes don't respond to key events, so you can add an event listener to detect any time the escape key is pressed while your app is active:

Custom Keyboard: inputView: how to change the Keyboard size?

I implemented the textfield with a custom keyboard with the "setInputView" function.
But i have a problem: my keyboard frame is not a standard iphone keybord frame.
The question is:
How can i change the size of my custom keyboard?
I know some functions like: UIKeyboardFrameBeginUserInfoKey, ..etc.
Please Note:
The iPhone keyboard frame is = 0,264,320,216
My custom keyboard frame is = 0,0,320,460

It turns out that the default behaviour of the custom input view that you assign to the UITextField's property is to resize the view to the same frame as the default keyboard. Try setting (I use the name InputViewController for my input view, but you can use whatever you want):
inputViewController = [[InputViewController alloc] initWithNibName:#"InputViewController" bundle:nil];
inputViewController.delegate = self;
inputViewController.view.autoresizingMask = UIViewAutoresizingNone; // This is the code that will make sure the view does not get resized to the keyboards frame.

To set the keyboard inputView with the same size as the native keyboard just do this:

To set your own frame do this:

Although the height of these views can be what you’d like, they should be the same width as the system keyboard. If UIKit encounters an input view with a UIViewAutoresizingFlexibleHeight value in its autoresizing mask, it changes the height to match the keyboard. There are no restrictions on the number of subviews (such as controls) that input views and input accessory views may have. For more guidance on input views and input accessory views, see iOS Human Interface Guidelines.
I had the same problem. I solved it by registering for UIKeyboardDidShowNotification (UIKeyboardWillShowNotification did not work, unfortunately) and then changing the view size after the keyboard was shown. However, it still had the white box on top of the keyboard when it was moving up. This worked fine for me because it is coming in over a UITextView with a white background. If you were coming in over any other colored objects, however, it would look a little ugly before the view was properly resized. You can solve that by setting the background color to clearColor.

Also if you're using a UIViewController to design your inputView, don't use the UIViewController.view... it seems to have a lot of problems getting resized incorrectly on rotate regardless of the AutoresizeMask.
What worked for me was to take my existing UI and use Editor > Embed In > View. Then create a new outlet, and pass that outlet as the inputView. Suddenly the resize on rotate bugs disappeared.
For me msgambel's solution didn't work. But the approach right, I was playing with the inputView's autoresizingMask. Former I had different setting, but the right way to avoid white extra space over the custom keyboard is:
I applied this just for the outermost view.

Stop UIToolbar from Disappearing in Landscape Orientation - iPad

Not sure why this happens or how to stop it, my UIToolBar on the details viewcontroller is only visible during portrait view. I want it visible at all orientations. How do I do that? Thank you.
I encountered the same problem by just dragging a UIToolBar on to my view and docking it on the top of the window. It showed up in landscape but not portrait. Interface Builder - at least the one embedded in Xcode 4 - doesn't seem to do the right thing with the resize masks.
While Kshitiz's answer above will work, it has a couple of flaws. As coded, it does not support all four orientations. More importantly, it's not resolution independent.
A better solution is briefly described in enamrik's comment, so credit should go to him/her. Here are the steps:
Select the tool bar in Interface Builder.
Open the Size inspector.
In the Autosizing box, select the left, right and top "i-beams" on the exterior of the square. This keeps the position of the toolbar fixed relative to the sides of the view when the view is resized.
Inside the Autosizing square, select the horizontal line with arrows on both ends. This causes the size of the toolbar to change in sync with the parent view.

Faced the same problem when I add UIPickerView programmatically and add UIToolBar for the PickerView. Just need to add [.flexibleWidth,.flexibleHeight] for the UIPickerView. eg:-
