I am new to Intellij IDEA and Navigation Back(Ctrl+Alt+Left) and Forward(Ctrl+Alt+Right) not working (tried in version 14 & 15),
but settings seems to be okey. How to make it work?
Intel Graphics uses these hotkeys for rotating the screen(Ctrl+Alt+Left/Right are used to rotate the screen 90 degree Left/Right). I have disabled Graphics hotkey, but still I was not able to use these hotkey in Intellij IDEA, then I changed the hotkey for Intel Graphics(Ctrl+Alt+F2/F3). Now I am able to Navigate Back and Forward with Ctrl+Alt+Left/Right.
In Gnome Ctrl + Alt + Left / Right are bound to switch-to-workspace-left/right per default.
To remove these keybindings, call:
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings switch-to-workspace-left "['']"
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings switch-to-workspace-right "['']"
Still applicable in 2020...
What worked for me was to not only disable the Intel Graphics system hotkeys, but to enable them first, change them to something that is not currently in use and then disable them back.
Simply disabling them did not work for me.
In Windows press CTL + ALT + F12 to opens Intel control panel.
Go to options and disable hot keys.
Note: If you need to enable hot keys back (CTL + ALT + F12 will not work), go to Start menu in Windows paste Intel Graphics and run one of these files: Gfxv4_0.exe, GfxUIEx.exe, Gfxv2_0.exe. Intel Graphics
You can solve the problem without hacking systemwide keymap.
In IntelliJ go to File > Settings > Keymap in which you can assign keyboard/mouse shortcuts into actions.
Also you can choose from other existing keymaps for example Gnome if you are using Ubuntu.
Tagging onto Amaresh Narayanan's answer. I also had to change the hotkeys as disabling alone did not work (changed screen rotation to ctrl+alt+8 and ctrl+alt+9, just something that is hard to mistype).
My fix was to go into Intel Command Center and change the hotkeys.
Beware that ctrl+alt+f12 lead me to the OLD Intel's settings manager on Windows. At the time of writing, there's Intel Command Center and Intel Control Panel, the latter of which editing the settings did not work and was the shortcut ctrl+alt+f12.
Right Click on Desktop => Graphic Options => Hot Keys => Disable
Use Shift + Alt + Left or Shift + Alt + Right instead.
To use, backward/forward command in intellij. you have to disable hot keys.
desktop->right click of any corner->graphics options->hot keys->disable/enable
A potential cause for this can also be VMware Workstation. Its default key combination for special VM commands is CTL + ALT. This will override any hotkeys that involve CTL + ALT on the virtualized system. The key combination can be rebound from Edit>Preferences>Hotkeys.
My specific version of VMware workstation is 12 Pro.
In case you are using Xubuntu, open [Window Manager], go to [keyboard], and remove/change the key combination for [Left Workspace] and [Right Workspace]. This will allow Intellij to use the hotkey.
In the Case of Mac, Go To
Preferences -> KeyMap -> Main Menu -> Navigate
Change Back & Forward to the shortcuts you prefer
The most recent solution is to update the Intel Graphics Command Center version and then disable hotkeys:
https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000057495/graphics/graphics-for-10th-generation-intel-processors.html
What are you seeing?
Applications such as PHPStorm* and JetBrains* have their Ctrl + Alt hotkeys disabled after installing the Intel® Graphics Command Center for the first time.
How to fix it:
This issue is resolved in Intel® Graphics Command Center version 1.100.2970.0 and newer. Install the latest version of the Intel® Graphics Command Center in the Microsoft Store.
If somebody happens to use awesomewm its default configuration is using MPD plugin which steals Ctrl+Alt+Left/Right shortcuts. Check your rc.lua configuration.

Recently, FoxitReader for Linux was officially introduced and I love it.
http://www.webupd8.org/2015/09/foxit-pdf-reader-sees-new-linux-release.html
However, somehow FoxitReader does not support shortcut keys for any comment tools. This is quite inconvenience for me, especially when I have to use the trackpad of my laptop to select the tool first.
So I would like to ask if is there any way to configure the shortcut keys of FoxitReader?
I do not see this feature in the preference of FoxitReader, so looking into the configuration files of FoxitReader in Linux could be a possible solution. But I am don't know how to do it.
Thanks for taking time reading my post!
Not sure for linux but in window u can do this
Right click on toolbar at top
select customise quick access toolbar
then follow this
Update:
Foxit version 2.4.1
By default, they provide for highlight light text using Ctrl+h (Linux)
Unfortunately this feature is not currently available. I'm sorry I can't give you a better answer. We (Foxit) are currently working on adding shortcut keys in future versions.
Try:
Right-click the toolbar region -> Customize Toolbar -> choose the Keyboard tab -> choose the View menu -> change the shortcuts for Next Page and Previous Page.
See the shortcuts available in foxit.
For the newest version:
Right click the ribbon under the "Home" section.
Select customize ribbon.
Navigate to the keyboard tab
I used this specifically to set the highlight tool. The section to find the highlight tool option is not intuitive so if your interested in setting the highlight shortcut just navigate to the comment section.
It is impossible to customized the shortcut on the Linux version. But for the windows version, Adiii has provided the solutions.
Two commonly used shortcut, which is already predefined in the Linux version is
CTRL + L: highlight
CTRL + N: note
Hope it helps.
The FoxIt Linux version do not support keyboard customization, BUT we can easily use FoxIt (Windows) on Linux via Wine + PlayOnLinux.
I set it up on my Ubuntu 18 by:
Download the Foxit Windows version from https://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf-reader/
Install via PlayOnLinux. (including adding a shortcut to the FoxitReader.exe)
Move the shortcut FoxitReader.desktop to the .local/share/applications and select any pdf file > properties > set the default application as FoxitReader.
This gives me the power of keyboard shortcut customization at a small price of slightly longer startup time.
The answer provided by user Adiii is sufficient above.
I would like to add,
the default option to highlight on foxit linux is ctrl + H
that option is occupied on windows for entering reading mode, since u would be highlighting more than entering the reading mode, assining alt+H to reading mode and assigning ctrl + H to highlight is the prudent choice.
I am using Intellij IDEA 13.1.5 and I cannot hide tool windows with default Shift+Esc keyboard shortcut. When I tried to set a different shortcut to the action, I figured out that Settings window cannot detect the Shift+Esc key combination. (I can set a different key combination in settings, but cannot set Shift+Esc. If I press Shift+Esc, IDEA doesn't detect it)
What could be the problem here? Could this be an issue with the OS (I am on Windows 7) so Shift+Esc is not sent to IDEA?
This was caused by a process named PrivacyIconClient.exe which should be using Shift+Esc as a global shortcut. This process is started by PIconStartup.exe which is started at system startup and can be prevented from starting by unchecking it in msconfig.
Privacy Icon Client can actually be configured to use shortcut another than default Shift + Esc.
I just upgraded my Intellij IDEA to version 14, but I have the problem that my cursor in the editor window is acting "different". It starts of in a sort of protected mode, which looks like the insert mode but it isn't, where I can't insert anything. After pressing some keys like a it changes back to normal except that sometimes it goes in a selection mode and by that I mean if I hit backspace instead of deleting the character as expected it just selects/highlights it. I find this behavior really annoying and I hope one of you can help me.
Additional Information:
Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite Intellij 14.0
Please ask if i can provide any additional information which might be helpful.
Disabling/Uninstalling the ideaVim plugin seemed to fix the problem for me. The plugin description hints that you can configure it via a configuration script in ~/.ideavimrc, which there may also be options to get "normal" behavior with the plugin installed but I haven't looked into that though because the plugin doesn't seems all that useful to me.
Disable Vim Emulator for Intellij.
On the top menu, go to Tools > Vim Emulator
ideaVim plug in is the problem, disable that and that misbehaviour will be gone.
Mac OS X Yosemite / IntelliJ IDEA 14 CE / us keyboard layout /
If your cursor looks like this:
Go to tools:
Turn off Vim Emulator:
Cursor should go back to normal.
Settings > IDE Settings > Editor > Appearance > Disable Use block caret
This fixed the issue for me.
It seems you have entered into insert mode. I have mac and I entered some combination of keys which somehow enabled insert mode. The use block caret was not ticked for me. I found this mentioned on JetBrains thread to get out of insert mode
In short, press on mac to get back into editing mode with the normal cursor
⌥ + ⌘ + v
Go to the Keymap section of your preferences and add your keyboard shortcut to the Toggle Insert/Override command.
This seems like a bug in IntelliJ 12: Every couple of times when I switch between keyboard layouts (English and Hebrew) IntelliJ get stuck on one of them and ignore the windows selected keyboard layout. This happens only for intelliJ, all other programs respond as usual to the windows selected keyboard layout.
Is there at least a workaround, or a way to reset IntelliJ's keyboard layout? The only thing that seems to work for me so far is restarting my machine...
(My OS is Windows 7 Enterprise 64bit)
This is 100% reproduced when you switch keyboard layout in quick class search (Ctrl+N). Also in intellij idea 13.
Something like:
Open quick search menu when keyboard is not in English layout (Russian e.g.)
Type anything
Switch to English
Congratulations! you stuck in russian layout :) restart your intellij idea!
When I ceased to switch layout in search, I forgot about this problem.
UPD: it's suitable for most part of text inputs (even for search and file creation)
I've just had this problem on PyCharm 2020.2.3
Here's how I've solved it:
Go to Settings -> Keymap
At the bottom of the window, check the option Use national layouts for shortcuts (require restart)
That did the trick
restarting IntelliJ also works.
I wonder how they managed to get such a stupid bug, this is not an easy bug to write, especially in Java.
That was found to be more like a global Microsoft/Oracle bug. Simple workaround from IntelliJ's issue tracker: use Windows' language parameters to assign a hotkey (Ctrl + number) for changing the layout directly to a desired language. This suddenly will affect both Windows And IDEA. It's said that bug was fixed in Win8. A bit more info: here
In 2020 bug is still relevant in the most IDEs based on IntelliJ. For example I observe this in PyCharm now.
There is workaround for Windows:
Go to Language Bar - Settings... - Advanced Key Settings
Set key sequence of To English action to Ctrl + 1
Set key sequence of to other your language to Ctrl + 2
Apply
Go to IntelliJ/PyCharm and switch language by new sequences
After that bug disappears and you can switch language by traditional method
For me the following actions seem to resolve the issue:
Go to Control Panel
Select Clock, Language & Region
Press Region
In the opened window choose English for Format.
Also all my settings except the location are set to English (locale, default keyboard etc.)
This fix worked on my mac, access Preferences -> Editor -> Typing Corrector from the intellij IDEA menu. If you are able to navigate to the same window on your OS, you can try this.
Uncheck Enable keyboard layout correction in the Typing Corrector window
I got the same issue in Ubuntu 16.04. Restarting IDEA doesn't change anything. But Changing the default layout to be the one I want by default ensured ubuntu work well with it.
Go to the search textfield above file editor.
Switch layout.
Type smth.
Click somwhere in the file editor.
Write smth with swithed layout.
Is there a keyboard shortcut to switch between project frames in intellij?
I have two projects open and the only way I've found to select the non-active project is to drag the top window/frame out of the way and then click on it.
On osx, I use the standard keystroke (both Command+~ or Command+` seem to work) for switching windows within an application.
On windows, I use alt+tab.
Annoyingly, you can use "Cmd + `" to switch through your windows but it doesn't loop back to the first window when you reach the end. You have to use "Shift + Cmd + `" to go in the reverse direction.
for Mac OS X, try:
option + command + [
option + command + ]
If you have multiple projects just switching between them may be too tedious.
In such case it's better to open Window menu using ALT+W and choose project from list.
To make quick search working for project names you need to open Window menu as popup. To do it just assign keyboard shortcut for it:
I chose CTRL+ALT+W as my shortcut to open the following window with project quick search:
for Windows, try:
Crtl + Alt + [
Ctrl + Alt + ]
I've stumbled upon an intellij-native popup for switching projects. To find it and set a key mapping:
cmd+shift+a (if macosx; shift+shift might work cross-platform) for the find-command popup menu
type/search for the "open project windows" command
option+enter (or equiv) to assign a key mapping
This Project Windows popup lets you type to filter and select by project name.
Go to Intellij Preferences.
Under Keymap find Activate Next Window.
Right click on it and choose Add Keyboard Shortcut.
Press cmd + ` and click OK.
Click OK to close Preference window.
Map key to Activate Next Window
2013 answer for people who want an "up to date" answer:
If you maximize (full screen) all your project windows and keep them grouped together in "mission control" then I find the three finger swipe works really well to move between projects.
Ctrl + Shift + [
Ctrl + Shift + ]
Does it for me. On both Intellij IDEA and PyCharm.
On Windows the following should work:
Ctrl + tab
There is no such shortcut by default, but it should be possible to implement this feature as a plug-in.
In ubuntu 18.10, you can use the below key combination for toggling betwee two open instances -
alt + `
In ubuntu, switching between multiple windows inside an IntelliJ,
use alt + ~
If you're a MacOS user, as well as the Command+` and Command+Shift+` keyboard shortcuts which IntelliJ offers to toggle between IntelliJ windows, the OS-level Control+↓ keyboard shortcut is an excellent way to see and navigate between windows of the current app. The screenshot below shows the view which it offers. If you turn on App Exposé in your Trackpad preferences, you can also get to this view by swiping down with three fingers.
For Mac,
Command + Shift + [ or ]
works in full screen mode.
fast forward to 2022 and you get...
I'm working on a Mac OS X. Right click on IntelliJ dock icon shows all your open projects.
I was struggling with the same issue. This is how I dealt with it.
If you have set up your mac for expose ( by default F10 for application windows), then you could use that keyboard shortcut. This is the quickest way I know and since I usually have around 5 project windows I use this fairly frequently.
On MAC CMD + ` will work.
Ensure that you haven't maximised windows.
Have been searching solution for macOS for long time and found this great plugin finally https://github.com/krasa/FrameSwitcher.
Switching intelliJ windows by searching project name including recent opened ones.
I am just put a new update her for MAC OS on version (20220.1.4)
it has new: command + option + stands for the next and command + option + shift + stands for back
I am using Mac Big Sur 11.2.3 plus IntelliJ 2019. to switch among windows, I use the following 3 keys.
⌥ ⌘ `
If you have opened multiple projects and want to switch between them, then you can use:
command `
that is, command and tilde (you can get it just above tab button).
This is for mac os.
