I have a small programm and i want to save the File so i can read them later into when i open it.
How can i now save the File cause i must save 5 Variables and read them back into the Tool and if its possible i want to use the File in Word or OpenOffice too.

If all you want to do is store four variables from your program in a file that can also be read by Word and OpenOffice, you can do that easily enough with a text file. The following code assumes that Title is a String, Pieces is an Integer, SinglePrice and TotalPrice are Decimal.

If you need to read the file to restore the values of the variables, you can do it like this. Note that this code assumes that the file was written by the first snippet of code, otherwise it would be necessary to validate the contaents of the file before using it.

I need my application to find and modify a text string in a .swp file (generated by VBA for SOLIDWORKS). If I open said file as text in Notepad++, most of the text looks like this (this is an excerpt):
Meaning there is readable text, and symbols that appear as NUL, BEL, EXT and so on, depending on selected encoding. If I make my changes via Notepad++ (finding and changing "1.38" to "1.39"), there are no issues, the file can be opened via SOLIDWORKS and is still recognized as valid. After all, I don't need to modify these non-readable bits. However, if I do the same modification in my VB.NET application,

I tried many different encodings, but it seems to make no difference. I am not sure how Notepad++ does it, but I can't seem to get the same result in my VB.NET application.
Can someone advise?
Thanks to #jmcilhinney, this is a solution that worked for me - reading file as bytes, converting to string, and then saving, using ANSI formatting:

1) Use a literal string:
The easiest way is replacing "HERE_HAS_TO_BE_A_PATH" with the literal path to desired output target, so overwriting it with "C:\output.txt":

2) Check permissions and read/write file references are correct:
There's a few reasons why you might be having difficulties, if you're trying to read and write into the root C:\ directory you might be having permissions issues.
Also, go line by line to make sure that the input and output files are correct every time you are using one or the other.
3) Make sure the implicit path is correct for non-fully qualified paths:
Next, when you test run the program, it's not actually in the same folder as the project folder, in case you're using a relative path, it's in a subfolder "\bin\debug", so for a project named [ProjectName], it compiles into this folder by default:
C:\path\to\[ProjectName]\bin\Debug\Program.exe
In other words, if you are trying to type in a path name as a string to save the file to and you don't specify the full path name starting from the C:\ drive, like "output.txt" instead of "C:\output.txt", it's saving it here:
C:\path\to\[ProjectName]\bin\Debug\output.txt
To find out exactly what paths it's defaulting to, in .Net Framework you can check against these:
Application.ExecutablePath
Application.StartupPath
4) Get user input via SaveFileDialogue
In addition to a literal string ("C:\output.txt") if you want the user to provide input, since it looks like you're using .Net Framework (as opposed to .Net Core, etc.), the easiest way to set a file name to use in your program is using the built-in SaveFileDialogue object in System.Windows.Forms (like you see whenever you try to save a file with most programs), you can do so really quickly like so:

6) Best practices: Close & Dispose vs. Using Blocks

In summary, although streams are managed and should garbage collect automatically, due to working with the file system unmanaged resources get involved, which is the primary reason why it's a good idea to manually dispose of the object. Your ".close()" does this. Overrides for both the StreamReader and StreamWriter classes call the ".dispose()" method, however it is still common practice to use a Using .. End Using block to avoid "running with scissors" as Enigmativity puts it in his post, in other words it makes sure that you don't go off somewhere else in the program and forget to dispose of the open filestream.
Within your program, you could simply replace the "Dim newFile As IO.StreamWriter = IO.File.CreateText("C:\output.txt")" and "newFile.close()" lines with the opening and closing statements for the Using block while using the simplified syntax, like so:
'Dim newFile As IO.StreamWriter = IO.File.CreateText(myFilePath) ' old
Using newFile As New IO.StreamWriter(myFilePath) ' new
Dim fix As String = "Text from somewhere!"
newFile.WriteLine(fix)

You can write that in this way. The stream writer automatically creates the file.

I'm not sure that this will address your stated problem but there's a serious issue with that code and I need to provide a long code snippet to address it and that won't be readable in a comment.
The Lines property of a TextBox or RichTextBox is not "live" data, i.e. it doesn't refer to an array stored within the object. Each time you get the property, a new array is created. You are getting RichTextBox3.Lines twice for every iteration of that loop, so that's obviously wrong. You also should not be adding items to the ListBox one by one like that. You should be creating a list of all the items first, then adding them all with a single call to AddRange:

If that code doesn't work as expected, you can debug it and view the contents of files at various stages to make sure that you are getting the files you expect. It might also be worth testing folder.Exists before calling GetFiles, unless you're absolutely sure that each line in the RichTextBox represents an existing folder.

You can use the IO.DirectoryInfo class to get every IO.FileInfo in a directory while specifically targeting PDF files, then use LINQ to order them by their LastWriteTime, and then get the last file from the collection:

You need to call two sets of functions to achieve this.
A. Directory.GetFiles - this will list all the files in a directory, and it has options to provide a search pattern and also look in sub-folders.
B. File.GetLastWriteTime - this will return the last modified time of the file you pass to it.
You can put these functions together like:

I am working on vb.net win form. My task is display the file names from a folder onto gridview control. when user clicks process button in my UI, all the file names present in gridview, the corresponding file has to be loaded onto memory stream buffer one after another and append the titles to the content of the file and save it in hard drive with _ed as a suffix to the file name.

to read a file into a memorystream is quite easy, just have a look at the following example and you should be able to convert it to suite your needs:

Dim ms As MemoryStream = New MemoryStream(bData, 0, bData.Length)

then just use the MemoryStream ms as you please. Just to clearify Path holds the full path and filename you want to read into your memorystream.
