VBS Excel Trying to select past empty cells in a macro - vba

I'm currently trying to create a macro that will make a selection based on a few criteria. However, I am running into problems when it comes to selecting all data to the right of a current point due to certain cells being empty.
So far I have something like this:
rwcnt = WorksheetFunction.CountA(Range("A:A"))
lastc = Cells(1, Columns.Count).End(xlToLeft).Column
Dim i As Long
For i = 2 To rwcnt
If IsNumeric(Cells(i, 1).Value) <> True Then
Range(Cells(i, 1).Address, Cells(i, 1).End(xlDown).Address).Select
Range(Selection, lastc).Select
Exit For
End If
Next
This gives me an error method 'range' of object '_global' failed
previously, I had the last range line reading as:
Range(Selection, Selection.End(xlToRight)).Select
I tried this as I am starting from the left, however, some rows have blank cells which is where the selection would get stopped. Because of this I am trying to make a way to come in from the right and find my last column and then select to that. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Range(Selection, lastc).Select
will fail because for this syntax Range is expecting a starting Range and an ending Range. (See https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/office/ff841254(v=office.15).aspx for syntax)
lastc is a number (specifically the number of the last used column).
You'd want to use something like the following instead:
Range(Selection, Cells(i, lastc)).Select
The parameters will depend on exactly what you want to select.

how to set range for a dynamic area and pasting with filters on in vba

I'm having some trouble with a 2 step problem.
The first part is setting a range to constantly changing data. I've been trying to categorize claims on a worksheet that has data that is being added to the same sheet daily, so the last active cell keeps changing. For instance my issue with the specific line of code is as follows.
Columns(“D:D”).Select
Selection.End(xlDown).Select
ActiveCell.Offset(1).Select
ActiveCell.Offset(0, 91).Select
Range(Selection, Selection.End(xlDown)).Select
Selection.Copy
Columns(“D:D”).Select
Selection.End(xlDown).Select
ActiveCell.Offset(1).Select
ActiveSheet.Paste
ActiveSheet.Range("$A$1:$EE$3000”).AutoFilter Field:=22, Criteria1:= Array( _
"DUPLICATE PAID/CAPTURED CLAIM:MORE CURRENT REFILL EXISTS", _
"REFILL TOO SOON:CLAIM ALREADY PROCESSED FOR STORE, RX, DOS", _
"REFILL TOO SOON:DISPENSED TOO SOON"), Operator:=xlFilterValues
Columns(“A:A”).Select
Selection.End(xlDown).Select
Selection.Copy
ActiveCell.Offset(1).Select
ActiveSheet.Paste
But I'm now recognizing setting the end range to a value of $EE$2007 isn't working. The column of EE will always remain the same, however the row changes.
The second part has to do with filtering. There are around 56 different categories in a separate column, V which then get flagged with a keyword in column A. I've gotten as far as being able to do the filtering portion and copying from the next cell up, but I'm having trouble pasting that keyword down the next which is the next blank cell and down to the last active row, again which all happens in column A. Above is what I have so far.
And this is where I get stuck. I'm new to all this, and am hoping to learn if there is a better way to go about this.
I was able to get to the second part by changing the range from $EE$2007 to $EE$3000 which caused my data to go further, but it is a possibility.
Thanks in advance.

Microsoft Excel: Macro to repeat a specific action multiple times

My task is to use Excel to manipulate a large set of data and I had heard of using a Macro but I'm not very code-savvy. I recorded the steps that are required using the macro function, but I need to add more lines of code to utilize looping and making sure it advances by 2 after every repeat.
I've posted my steps below:
Range("A5:C5").Select
Selection.Insert Shift:=xlDown, CopyOrigin:=xlFormatFromLeftOrAbove
Range("A5").Select
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "=R[-1]C+0.1"
Range("B7:C7").Select
Selection.Copy
Range("B5").Select
ActiveSheet.Paste
Application.CutCopyMode = False
Basically, select 3 cells (A5:C5) insert cells and shift cells down. Use a formula in the newly empty A5 to add 0.1 to A4 and copy values from B7:C7 and paste into B5:C5.
The following image shows a before and after of what I'm talking about to make things more clear.
Before
After
The next step would be:
Range("A7:C7").Select
Selection.Insert Shift:=xlDown, CopyOrigin:=xlFormatFromLeftOrAbove
Range("A7").Select
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "=R[-1]C+0.1"
Range("B9:C9").Select
Selection.Copy
Range("B7").Select
ActiveSheet.Paste
Application.CutCopyMode = False
and so on.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. I also apologize if what I'm asking is still confusing or not clear in any way.
[Prologue:]
Hi, I'll provide you with an answer and I tried to comment the heck out of it to make it as beginner friendly as possible, but the truth of the matter is:
I can explain to you how it's done, but you will never properly understand why it's done until you properly understand basic programming methodologies such as looping and that is something only you and you alone have to sit down to and fully comprehend
[The gaps in logic:]
Probably the biggest issue is, you have not specified what happens
when your data reaches empty cells (what I mean under that) - if in
your loop you were on row 10 (7, M, N) you would have no longer any
letters to add, as the next 2 rows (12) no longer contain eny data.
Given this, I modified the loop to start at the n-2th row instead to prevent this from happening (that means in your example it will end (or start to be more precise) at 6.1 as it's the last row that can retrieve the data)
In general, I'd recommend posting not only a picture of input data, but rather than picture of current result in this case a properly explained expected result would be much more to our benefit and understanding and would have saved me a lot of the guesswork here.
[The theoretical part of your question:]
I'll save you a bit of googling time here with few useful facts.
If you're looking to repeat a specific action, you should always be looking to utilize one of the 2 (or 3 depending on how you classify them) loops for and do (while/until)
Better yet, if you're looking to loop a variant amount of actions for repeated amount of times, you should utlize either a procedure Sub or a function Function so you can use arguments that act as a variable for the loop.
Generally when adding or removing rows it's important to loop from Bottom to Top (from Last to First). Why? Because if you add an extra row, it's going to mess up your Row order.
With all that in mind, the procedure itself could look something like this:
[The solution itself:]
You can use the following procedure every time for a specified range.
Option Explicit 'prevents typo. errors, undeclared variables and so on
Private Sub extra_row(ByVal rng As Range) 'declaration of procedure
Dim i As Long
' we loop for the n-th - 2 row (last row - 2) to the pre-first (added) row.
For i = (rng.Rows.Count + rng.Row - 2) To rng.Row + 1 Step -1
'why the -2? ^ Because if you add the letters from next 2 rows,_
the last 2 would have no to grab _
eg. Row 10 and 11 in your original data would have no data under them to grab
' a bit harder section to comprehend, if it's the first data entry _
we need to account for the fact that we have not added any extra rows yet_
hence we also need to decrement the row from which we receive the data by 1 _
it 's bit of difficult to word, i'd highly recommend debugging yourself _
and seeing what happens with or without it
Dim fp As Integer
If (i - 2 = rng.Rows.Count) Then
fp = 1
Else
fp = 0
End If
' now we just add the extra rows where we can
Rows(i).Insert Shift:=xlDown, CopyOrigin:=xlFormatFromLeftOrAbove
Cells(i, 1) = Cells(i, 1).Offset(-1, 0) + 0.1 'we add 0.1 to cell one above
Cells(i, 2) = Cells(i + 3 - fp, 2) ' similar case, with letters, but two below
Cells(i, 3) = Cells(i + 3 - fp, 3) ' similar case, with letters, but two below
Next i 'and we loop for every cell in our specified range
End Sub
Eg. in your case, you could run the procedure with the following command:
Call extra_row(Range("A4:A11"))
[Practical use]
While the solution itself should work, in a real world example it probably might be smarter not to use a specific range to call for each procedure. Especially if that means use has to look at the worksheet, check the range and count the rows manually.
That's one of the reasons we created a procedure here to begin with. So I created one more procedure akin to main() in most programming languages which detects the last active row and applies the procedure to your data range by detecting it automatically.
So in the end, your could should look something like this:
Option Explicit
Private Sub extra_row(ByVal rng as Range)
'... code from the answer here
End Sub
Private Sub rundata()
Dim lr As Long
lr = Sheets("Your Sheet Name").Cells(Rows.Count, 1).End(xlUp).Row
'detects the last active (nonempty) row _
rememeber to change the Sheets("") to wherever your data is stored
Dim mydata As Range
Set mydata = Range("A4:A" & lr) 'under presumption your data always begins with A4
Call extra_row(mydata)
End Sub
Now, whenever you would run (manally) or Call the run_data() procedure it would automatically detect the range and apply the procedure we defined to it.
[Expected result visualization and closing words:]
We started with this:
After running the procedure:
Now I know, it may seem like there's a lot of novel concepts here, but truth of the matter is, all of them are fairly easy once you buckle down and try to comprehend the code line by line. Most of it is simple mathematical operations.
If you still have trouble comprehending anything here, do your own research first and then post comment here or better yet, create a new question (if it warrants it).
Good luck on your coding journey! :)

This code should do the trick.
The code gives you an InputBox in which you can type in the number of times to run the code.
Sub test()
Application.ScreenUpdating = False
Dim Grab As Range
Dim RunTimes As Long
On Error GoTo Get_Out
RunTimes = InputBox("How many times shall the code run?", "Run times")
On Error GoTo 0
For x = 1 To RunTimes * 1.5 + 3 Step 2
Set Grab = ActiveSheet.Range("A" & x + 4)
Grab.EntireRow.Insert
Grab.Offset(-1, 0).Value = Grab.Offset(-2, 0).Value + 0.1
Grab.Offset(-1, 1).Value = Grab.Offset(1, 1).Value
Grab.Offset(-1, 2).Value = Grab.Offset(1, 2).Value
Next x
MsgBox "Succes"
Get_Out:
Application.ScreenUpdating = True
End Sub
Let me know if you have any questions about the code or if you want me to explain it further :)

VBA not updating Excel rows referring to other sheets in same workbook when sorting rows alphabetically

I'm having problems, Excel is not updating rows referring to other sheets in same workbook when ordering rows alphabetically.
I have a userform in which there's a button insertCM with this code:
Private Sub insertButton_Click()
ActiveCell.EntireRow.Select
Selection.Insert Shift:=xltoDown
Range("A9:AK9").Copy
Range("A8:AK8").Select
Selection.PasteSpecial Paste:=xlPasteFormulas
Selection.PasteSpecial Paste:=xlPasteFormats
Range("C10").Copy
Range("C8:C9").Select
Selection.PasteSpecial Paste:=xlPasteFormulas
Range("H9:AK9").Copy
Range("H8:AK8").Select
Selection.PasteSpecial Paste:=xlPasteAll
nomCM = Empty
CXinitial = Empty
resteCX = Empty
CCselect = Empty
C4initial = Empty
resteC4 = Empty
compteurCT = Empty
Range("A8").Activate
ActiveCell.RowHeight = 18.6
For i = 2 To ThisWorkbook.Sheets.Count
With Sheets(i).Select
emptyRow = Range("A9").End(xlDown).Offset(0, 2).Row
Range("A9:AL" & emptyRow).Sort _
Key1:=Range("A9"), Order1:=xlAscending
Set SearchRange = Range("A8", Range("A200").End(xlUp))
Set FindRow = SearchRange.Find(nomCM, LookIn:=xlValues, LookAt:=xlWhole)
Range("A" & FindRow.Row).Select
ActiveCell.EntireRow.Activate
End With
Next i
Sheet2.Select
End
End Sub
The userform is used for inserting new clients in several sheets at the same time. Textbox inserts Name, Cost Center, etc., in a blank row and insertButton inserts a new row leaving data inserted in row 8 to go to row 9. After that the code puts all rows alphabetical order so the new client now in row 9 goes to the new one, and cells containing formulas change row numbers.
However some of the sheets have cells containing references to other sheets' cells in the same row. So imagine:
I insert client name "LORUM" "Cost Center 4" and it puts him in row 9 so formula is:
=$C9-COUNTIF($E9:$P9;"CT")+'Sheet5'!$D9
...but when it changes his row to the final one, formula row is:
=$C18-COUNTIF($E18:$P18;"CT")+'Sheet5'!$D9
It does not change row when referring to other sheets.
Any ideas?
It's looks like you've made a good effort, but there are still numerous problems with your code (beside the one line), and I can guarantee that a combination of these issues are preventing your intended outcome.
I can't fix it completely because there are so many bugs that I'm not clear on what you're trying to do, but hopefully this will get you started on the right track...
xlToDown is not a valid reference. You probably mean xlDown
you have a number of undeclared variables and objects, like: i, emptyRow, SearchRange, FindRow, nomCM
you have things (objects?) "set to nothing" that aren't declared or used anywhere: CXinitial, resteCX, CCselect, C4initial, resteC4, compteurCT
your Find statement is looking for nomCM which is empty (and never set), so the Find statement will never find anything.
You should put Option Explicit at the top of every module (especially when learning or troubleshooting). This will prevent issues like the ones above by "forcing" you to properly declare & handle all of your variables, objects, properties, etc.
Near the end, you refer to Sheet2.Select as if Sheet2 is a declared object, instead of using Sheets("Sheet2").Select. I'm not sure why you're selecting the sheet at the very end anyhow.
You have an With..End statement that is doing absolutely nothing since you don't reference it with a . dot anywhere: With Sheets(i).Select .. End With, and also Select isn't used like that.
A mystery End near the end for some reason.
Also, you're unnecessarily doubling up commands like:
ActiveCell.EntireRow.Select
Selection.Insert Shift:=xlDown
..instead of:
ActiveCell.EntireRow.Insert Shift:=xlDown
and another example, all this:
Range("A9:AK9").Copy
Range("A8:AK8").Select
Selection.PasteSpecial Paste:=xlPasteFormulas
Selection.PasteSpecial Paste:=xlPasteFormats
Range("C10").Copy
Range("C8:C9").Select
Selection.PasteSpecial Paste:=xlPasteFormulas
Range("H9:AK9").Copy
Range("H8:AK8").Select
Selection.PasteSpecial Paste:=xlPasteAll
...instead of:
Range("A9:AK9").Copy
Range("A8:AK8").PasteSpecial xlPasteValuesAndNumberFormats
Range("C10").Copy
Range("C8:C9").PasteSpecial Paste:=xlPasteFormulas
Range("H9:AK9").Copy Range("H8:AK8")
All of this would be more clear by Googling the documentation for each command you're unfamiliar with, such as:
Range.Copy Method (Excel)
Range.PasteSpecial Method (Excel)
XlPasteType Enumeration (Excel)
All the ActiveCell and ThisWorkbook references are troublesome but again, I'm not sure what to do with them since I don't know your workbook.
Indentation (and general organization) are very important as well. It may not change the way that the code runs, but it will help you (and others) track down existing & potential issues more easily.
Here is your code cleaned up as best as I could:
Option Explicit 'this line goes at the very top of the module
Private Sub insertButton_Click()
Dim i As Long, emptyRow As Long, SearchRange As Range, FindRow As Range, nomCM
nomCM = Empty
ActiveCell.EntireRow.Insert Shift:=xlDown
Range("A9:AK9").Copy
Range("A8:AK8").PasteSpecial xlPasteValuesAndNumberFormats
Range("C10").Copy
Range("C8:C9").PasteSpecial Paste:=xlPasteFormulas
Range("H9:AK9").Copy Range("H8:AK8")
Range("A8").RowHeight = 18.6
For i = 2 To ThisWorkbook.Sheets.Count
With Sheets(i)
emptyRow = .Range("A9").End(xlDown).Offset(0, 2).Row
.Range("A9:AL" & emptyRow).Sort Key1:=.Range("A9"), Order1:=xlAscending
Set SearchRange = .Range("A8", .Range("A200").End(xlUp))
Set FindRow = SearchRange.Find(nomCM, LookIn:=xlValues, LookAt:=xlWhole)
.Range("A" & FindRow.Row).Select
ActiveCell.EntireRow.Activate
End With
Next i
Sheets("Sheet2").Select
End Sub
as per my test, sorting actually doesn't change other sheet direct references
so you may want to use OFFSET to keep referencing the actual current row index
instead of:
=$C9-COUNTIF($E9:$P9;"CT")+'Sheet5'!$D9
use
=$C9-COUNTIF($E9:$P9;"CT")+ OFFSET('Sheet5'!$D1,ROW()-1,0)
I found a solution:
=INDIRECT(ADDRESS(ROW();4;3;1;"Sheet5"))
Where Row() will always refer to the actual cell's row.
Hope it will help you!

VBA Runtime Error 1004 “Application-defined or Object-defined error” when setting Range in macro

I'm going to preface this by saying that I am very new to VBA and this is my first project with it however, I'm trying quite hard because otherwise it is manual copy paste ~200 times.
Unfortunately, for a first project it has been difficult.
EDITED FOR CLARITY (HOPEFULLY): The main idea is that I need to start at the beginning of a drop down list, copy the first string listed, then paste that string down the column. This changes the numerical data adjacent to the right. I then want to select this newly changed numerical data and copy and paste it to a different sheet in the same workbook in the first blank space in column F. I then want the code to iterate through the drop down list and do this for all 51 strings in the drop down. However it needs to paste offset by 3 columns for each iteration to copy the data to the correct column in the other sheet.
Here is my code thus far
Option Explicit
Sub PtComp()
'
' PtComp Macro
'
'
Dim List1 As String
Dim Range1 As Range
Dim Line1 As Range
Dim i As Integer
Dim Begin As Range
ActiveWorkbook.Sheets("Sample Data Summary").Activate
List1 = Selection
Set Range1 = Evaluate(ActiveSheet.Range(List1).Validation.Formula1)
For Each Line1 In Range1
Selection.Copy
ActiveSheet.Range(Selection, Selection.End(xlDown)).Select
ActiveSheet.Paste
ActiveCell.Offset(0, 1).Select
ActiveSheet.Range(Selection, Selection.End(xlDown)).Select
Application.CutCopyMode = False
ActiveSheet.Selection.Copy
ActiveWorkbook.Sheets("Pt Comparison").Activate
Begin = ActiveSheet.Range("F1").End(xlDown).Offset(-1, 0)
For i = 0 To 148 Step 3
Begin.Offset(0, i).Select
ActiveSheet.PasteSpecial Paste:=xlPasteValues
Next i
Next Line1
End Sub
It is highlighting this line
Set Range1 = Evaluate(ActiveSheet.Range(List1).Validation.Formula1)
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Sorry if my code is trash, like I said, first timer hoping to get better.
EDIT: Also, I looked back at older questions with the same error and thought that it was maybe because it wasn't clear what worksheet I was trying to define the range in, hence why my code is full of 'ActiveSheet' but still no luck.
Your code assumes List1 contains a valid range address, and thus that the active cell on that "Sample Data Summary" worksheet, contains a valid range address.
Apparently that isn't always the case. Search for more details on the On Error statement for ideas about how you could go about handling that situation.
You need to read up on How to avoid using Select in Excel VBA macros, and know that clipboard operations in a tight loop is pretty much the single slowest thing you can do in Excel-VBA.
Seems you want something like this:
Set Range1 = Evaluate(Selection.Validation.Formula1)
Your code blows up on Range(List1) because List1 does not contain a valid range address.

VBA help in selecting entire rows on a dynamic range

Hi thanks everyone in advance.
I have a data set. lets say A3 to Z30. the number of rows and columns varies. also there are blanks in the set. So lets say i want to select the entire section but there's a blank in Z29 and X30 using
Range("A3").Select
Range(Selection, Selection.End(xlDown)).Select
Range(Selection, Selection.End(xlToRight)).Select
Selection.Copy
isn't going to work.
But the values in column A is continuous. So i think the first part will work
Range("A3").Select
Range(Selection, Selection.End(xlDown)).Select
now i know this may seem elementry but how the heck do i select all the rows i just highlighted? this needs to be dynamic because as i said the number of columns and rows vary.
Oh and bonus karma and kudos if you can help me to figure out the next part. I need to select the range and paste it immediately after the the last row but the value in the first cell or A31 in this case would need to change and that is being pulled from a list in sheet2
Use the .EntireRow method.
Here is an example:
Dim report as Worksheet
Set report = Excel.ActiveSheet
report.cells(1,1).EntireRow.Select
If you want to select the cells themselves, you can use the .UsedRange method.
Here is an example:
Dim report As Worksheet
Set report = Excel.ActiveSheet
report.Range(report.Cells(1, 1), report.Cells(1, report.UsedRange.Columns.Count)).Select
EDIT
Here is an example for part II of your question (as requested):
Sub test2()
Dim report As Worksheet
Set report = Excel.ActiveSheet
report.Cells(1, 1).EntireRow.Copy
report.Cells(report.UsedRange.Rows.Count + 1, 1).EntireRow.PasteSpecial xlPasteAll
End Sub
Be sure to note that the .UsedRange method also includes cells that have no values but have been formatted by the user; e.g., if you add bold font (even if you don't add the text itself) to a cell in row 1000, your .UsedRange.Rows.Count will be 1000.
Additionally, you can check my answer in the following link for more guidance. I've been told the notes are very helpful for beginners:
Excel Macro - Paste only non empty cells from one sheet to another (Stack Overflow)
You might want to look at this, and consider what you could do with Range.CurrentRegion, Range.Resize and Range.Offset, so you might get:
Range("A3").CurrentRegion.Copy
Additionally, there's no need to use Range.Select unless you want a user to see what is happening; instead of (for example) a Range.Select followed by a Selection.Copy() (which copies to the clipboard), you could just use a Range.Copy(Range), which copies direct to the target range.
As to the second part, you could:
Dim CopyRow as Long
CopyRow = Range("A3").CurrentRegion.Rows.Count
Range("A3").CurrentRegion.Copy(Range("A3").CurrentRegion.Offset(CopyRow))
Range("A3").Offset(CopyRow) = x ' Insert your reference to the Sheet 2 value here
I am aware that this thread is old, however I was looking for help with something similar. I knew my starting cell for my range, but the number of rows and columns were going to be dynamic. Using the following code worked for me:
Range("A2").Select
Range(Selection, Selection.End(xlDown).End(xlToRight)).Select
Hopefully anyone in the future can make use of this simple solution.
