VB.NET Create downloadable resource - vb.net

I've become stuck at this hurdle. I'm trying to create a database that clients fill in, however the client can set different database paths to view different information in the program. I want to create template databases so should they wish to create a new database it will work with the SQL queries the program uses.
I'm trying to save the templates in to the program so that when a button is clicked, the template file is "downloaded" (copied) to the clients desktop.
Is this even possible?

You can open the Resources page of the project properties and add any existing file, including a SQL Server MDF data file. At run time, you can get the data of the file from the appropriate property of My.Resources. The type of the data depends on the type of the file. I'd expect that an MDF file would come back as a Byte array, which you can then write to a file or whatever.
That said, you don't want to make your EXE too big by embedding several sizeable data files in it. You might be better off just using loose files in a subfolder or, if you're determined to use resources, create a satellite assembly, i.e. a DLL that contains just resources.

Programmatically set default column values based on folder in SharePoint Online

I'm working on enhancing metadata in our SharePoint online (O365) environment. Since a portion of my user base is used to foldering (explorer style), I've started using default column values to automatically set values on any files added to that specific folder (we have content organized categorically by folder currently). An example is our HR documents library - we have separate folders for recruiting, payroll, personnel files, etc. that automatically categorize files added to that folder with the same categories (recruiting, payroll, personnel, etc.). This supports both "search" and "click" users and makes adoption WAY easier while getting important metadata.
I want to implement this in a larger, more dynamic fashion, so manually setting default column values on each folder is not going to be scalable.
How can I reference the top level folder within the library (or even the current folder) for each newly added file and populate the "category" field for that new file with that folder name? I can do some very basic C# or Java code copy/paste, but bonus points for non-coding solutions =)
This problem can be solved through no coding.You can use the workflow to implement this by SharePoint Designer.
Create different view for different function team, and then use the view filter to show the document.
If you upload a file, use the workflow to set the metadata of the file. There are some known limitations: if you upload multiple files at the same time, the metadata for the file maybe does not work well; or if you upload a folder, the meta will not work for it and the file in the folder may not be set to right metadata.
I was actually able to use MS Flow to accomplish this in a pretty simple and straightforward fashion without managing custom views per team. The concept at a high level was:
(Trigger) When a new document is created in a folder in the library
Get the link of the parent folder of the newly added document
Create a variable (or just code it out in the Flow step) to parse out the name of the parent folder from the parent folder link (should be all text to the right of the last "/")
Set the category field as the variable
I'm sure that you could do the same right in a SharePoint designer workflow, but I prefer flow due to the visual aspect of it and being far easier to troubleshoot.

Read .pbix file content through C# or java

I am when trying to use java / c# or any other programming language to modify .pbix file which generated from Microsoft Power BI. Is there any dll provided by POWER BI or how can i read the content through program. I just want to get and update the datasource directory. Please help.

I don't think it's possible, and even if it is, the solution is likely inelegant.
Even if you managed to do this, you would need to open your PBIX file in the PBI Desktop to refresh your data.
Are you doing this because you have many queries and it's inconvenient to change data source string (folder name) of all of them? There is a way to keep your connection string in a single variable as described here.
I don't know your exact setup, but looking at your question, lets say you have sets of files in different folders and you want to change the folder in one step.
To use the approach from the link above but with file input, you need to do the following:
If it's a new report, import your files as usual
Create new query: "New Source"->"Blank Query"
You will see "Query1" and an empty text box, enter the folder name, for example "C:\". Rename this query to "Folder".
Go to your imported file in the query editor, "test1" in my example. In query settings on the right, select source.
Change the filename by substituting the folder with your "Folder" query, for example:
...File.Contents("C:\test1.csv"),...
...File.Contents(Folder & "test1.csv"),...
Repeat for all imported files, then "Close & Apply".
Now whenever you need to change the folder with your files, edit your "Folder" value and "Refresh".

Visual Studio Unit Test Data Path and Source Control

I have a unit test project for my VB.NET solution that takes a very large data set (multiple Gigabytes). The data set is static, outside of source control (developers unzip a big .zip file somewhere on their machine)
I'm trying to figure out how to reference this data set inside my project and I'm having trouble because of the following constraints:
The data set may be in a different location on each developer's machine e:\dev\MySolution\TestProject\ vs. c:\MySolution\TestProject\data. We can require it to be in the project folder but I can't require that the project folder be in the same place. This means I can't store the path in source control or I need some way to override it.
Because of its size I don't want to have to copy or deploy the test data at runtime because this will slow things down a lot and I don't want to have two copies of it.
My hack-y solution is to use a project property called DataPath and reference this inside each test. Then users would just change the property and I'd instruct them not to commit this change.... feels like an anti-pattern though.
My initial thoughts were to somehow store the path in the project.suo file which is outside of source control but I can't figure out how to make that work.
Anyone have experience with this?

vb.net using a custom file to save different types of data

I'm brushing up on my VB.NET skills for a future project I will be working on. This application will be very data intensive, requiring 20+ data tables, user supplied images, and possibly even short audio/video files.
I want to be able to save all of this information into a single, external file, so that the user can share what they create with the world.
Ideally, I would like all the text based data to be stored in a database format that I can easily work with, preferably via the entity framework.
Pretty much all the information I'm finding relates to only saving a single text/XML file, and that will not really work for me. Can anyone point me in the proper direction, or suggest a method that will let me save the data?
I'm working inside Visual Studio 2012 Pro, with a Visual Basic Windows Form Application. Please let me know if you need any additional information.

As previously mentioned this sounds like a zip file. In this you can:
Have a file called databasetables.txt or whatever containing the database tables.
You can have Audio, Video, Images etc in respective folders. This way when you open your file you can just load all files in the Audio folder to get the expected files.
You can have information stored in xmlfiles.
Endless posibilities...
Just keep in mind that you might want to load all this only into the memory of the computer so you dont extract it onto the hard drive.
And you dont have to save the file as .zip to open it as .zip, just select your own cool suffix which will look neat :)

Recommended document structure. File Wrappers? Roll my own?

I'm currently working out the best structure for a document I'm trying to create. The document is basically a core data document that uses sqlite as its store, but uses the Apple provided NSPersistentDocument+FileWrapperSupport to enable file wrapper support.
The document makes heavy use of media, such as images, videos, audio files, etc. with potentially 1000s of files. So what I'm trying to do is create a structure similar to the following:
/myfile.ext/
/myfile.ext/store.sqlite
/myfile.ext/content/
/myfile.ext/content/images/*
/myfile.ext/content/videos/*
/myfile.ext/content/audio/*
Now, first of all I went down the route of creating a temporary directory and placing all of my media in there. Basically creating the paths and file names '/content/images/image1.jpg' as I wanted them to appear in the saved file wrapper, and then upon save I attempted to copy these all into the filewrapper...
What I found was that the files were indeed copied into the wrapper with the file structure I wanted, but when the actual wrapper was saved, these files all magically disappeared.
Great.
So, I trashed my existing solution and tried to use file wrappers instead. This solution involved creating a content wrapper file directory when a new document was created, or loading in a content directory file wrapper upon opening a document.
When an image was added/modified, I created the necessary directory wrappers inside this root content wrapper (i.e. an images directory wrapper if it didn't already exist, or any other intermediary directory wrappers that needed to be created) and then created a regular file wrapper for the media, removing any existing wrapper for that file name if one was there.
Saving the document was just a case of making sure the content file wrapper was added to the document file wrapper, and the document would save.
Well... it did. The first time. However, any attempts to make any subsequent changes i.e add an image, save. Then replace image, save. Did not behave as expected, only showing the image from the first save.
So, my question is... first of all, which of the above approaches is the correct one, if at all, and what am I doing that wrong for them to fail.
And secondly, as I expect to be managing 1000s of images, is using file wrappers the correct way to go about things at all.
With that much media in play, you should likely give your users control over whether the media resides in the document or only a reference to the media is included in the document, and the media resides elsewhere, such as in a library/repository managed by your application. Then they could save out a (potentially many times larger) copy with all references resolved.
You might want to zip/unzip any directory so that users don't get confused trying to attach the document to an email. I believe iWork has been doing this with its document bundles for a while now.
As far as what you are doing wrong, no-one can say, as you haven't provided any code demonstrating what you are doing.
Why don't you create a one-off application that lets you select files on disk and saves those files in a document using a file wrapper? This would let you tackle this functionality without any interference from other issues in your application. Once you understand how to use file wrappers, you can port the code back or just write new code that works.
