I want get date from sql server in user specified format using GETDATE() function.
if i give this query
select GETDATE()
then it is displating output date in this format
2015-03-17 07:29:58.377
but i want output like this .
2015-03-17
what statement should be added with query to get the result.
help me from this problem.
Just use convert():
select convert(varchar(10), getdate(), 121)
Just have a look to the following link. which provides more conversion options.
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms187928.aspx
In SQL Server 2012 onward you may use FORMAT() which is a bit more intuitive than recalling style numbers.
e.g.
select FORMAT( GETDATE() , 'yyyy-MM-dd' )
see: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-AU/library/hh213505.aspx
however do note the second parameter is case sensitive
'yyyy-MM-dd' works
'YYYY-MM-DD' would only work for the MM

I have a little task to do and I need to get ddmmyyyy format for my DateTime values in SQL Server.
I tried to do it with this code
SELECT convert(varchar, getdate(), 104)
and it works fine, but it returns dd.mm.yyyy or 01.11.2021. I need it to be 01112021 but I can't achieve this yet.
I am using this link for getting datetime format codes but I can't find any code that really helps me achieve my goal.
There's no exact match for the required format you need - you can either use
SELECT REPLACE(CONVERT(varchar(20), SYSDATETIME(), 104), '.', '')
(use what you had and just strip out the . after first step of formatting)
or you can use FORMAT which is available in SQL Server 2012 and newer:
SELECT FORMAT(SYSDATETIME(), 'ddMMyyyy')
There is no defined format that fulfills your request. However, you can use the 'Replace' function to strip your value from date separators.
select replace(convert(varchar, getdate(),104),'.','')
OR use the newer FORMAT function (SQL server 2012+)
SELECT FORMAT(getdate(), 'ddMMyyyy')
You can use replace function to complete it.
select replace(convert(varchar, getdate(), 104),'.','')
I want to convert the column (EXECUTION_LOCAL_DATE_TIME) which has datetime format as (YYYY-MM-DD hh:mm:ss.nnnnnnn) to format (YYYY-MM-DD). Ho do i get this. I am working on SQL server management studio
If your intention is to just get the DATE part of a DATETIME then you can just convert the format to DATE (note that this will return a 'Date' datatype, not specifically formatted to a string 'YYYY-MM-DD'.)
eg:
DECLARE #Dt DATETIME = '2019-01-25T12:00:00'
SELECT CONVERT(DATE, #Dt)
Will return '2019-01-25'
You want the CAST() function:
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/t-sql/functions/cast-and-convert-transact-sql?view=sql-server-2017
Ideally you should return the datetime format from your query and let your presentation layer handle formatting.
However if you are using SQL server 2012 or higher then you can use the Format() function. See the below answer:
Convert Date format into DD/MMM/YYYY format in SQL Server
If you're using SQL Server 2012 or higher you can use the FORMAT() function.
In your case you'd need
SELECT FORMAT(EXECUTION_LOCAL_DATE_TIME, 'yyyy-MM-dd') FROM TABLE_NAME
You can find additional info here
https://www.mssqltips.com/sqlservertip/2655/format-sql-server-dates-with-format-function/
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/t-sql/functions/format-transact-sql?view=sql-server-2017
Here Is the Code Worked For me
SELECT convert(varchar, EXECUTION_LOCAL_DATE_TIME, 111) from Tablename
The Execution_Local_Date_Time will be Converted to yyyy/mm/dd format.
I use Classic ASP and SQL Server 2012. I have a program that inputs into the database using now(). Originally it was formnatdatetime(now(),2).
For the majority of time everything was fine but for some reason (which is why I'm asking) occasionally it would put the date in the database in the wrong format. So instead of ddmmyyyy it would be mmddyyyy.
I cannot see how or why when the code is the same, the database is the same. I assume now() or getdate() in TSQL is server specific.
You could use the format function
SELECT FORMAT(GETDATE(),'ddMMyyyy')
Results:
11042015
MS SQL Server 2012 does not know NOW() function! As Gordon Linoff mentioned, you need to use GETDATE() instead!
I'd suggest to read this: Date and Time Data Types and Functions (Transact-SQL) together with: CAST and CONVERT (Transact-SQL)
SELECT CONVERT(VARCHAR(30), GETDATE(), 103) AS CustomDateFormat
-- returns: dd/mm/yyyy
Note that sometimes, sql server can't convert date stored as a string, so you need to use SET DATEFORMAT, especially when sql server uses different date format:
SET DATEFORMAT dmy;
SELECT CONVERT(VARCHAR(30), '11/04/2015', 121) AS NewDateTime
I am working in SQL Server 2008 R2
I need to convert a varchar(50) field in a view to a date format.
I have a view that uses the following to create the field delivered_date:
convert(varchar(50),[delvd_dt],110) as [delivered_date]
The formatted field looks like : 2012-03-11 16:24:42.0000000
I need the results to be a date so that I can check for dates within a range. I would prefer to do it within the view so that I can use SSRS to create the range for the report.
Have you tried cast()? The following returns the right date for me:
select CAST('2012-03-11 16:24:42.0000000' as DATE)
Perhaps you can simply truncate the millis and use CONVERT:
SELECT Convert(datetime, LEFT('2012-03-11 16:24:42.0000000', 19), 102) AS [Date]
Demo
This works even in MS SQL-Server 2005.
CAST and CONVERT (Transact-SQL)
Try this link website shows several formatting options.
Example:
SELECT CONVERT(VARCHAR(10), GETDATE(), 105)
my datetime field looks like this:
2011-02-07 06:51:32.000 (yyyy-mm-dd)
User input is in this format:
02-07-2011 (only the date)
This should be converted to:
02-07-2011 00:00:00.000
i tried CONVERT:
CONVERT(VARCHAR(10),myDateTimeField,113)
but this only works with date values not with datetime.
please help!
I used the following function:
CONVERT(datetime,Cast(myDateInput AS Char (10)), 105)
thanks for all your answers! and my apoligizes for changing my question!
select convert(varchar, myDateTimeField, 105) ...

Crystal has a function called Date; it takes either YYYY, MM, DD or a datetime as arguments and returns a date.
So I would suggest you make a formula to change the date to a datetime and display it.
date( mytable.mydatetimevar )
You should then be able to format this date as you want with the normal date field formatting options.
An alternative method of doing it is using Crystal's DatePart function to pull out the month, year, day and then restructure as required.
Try this:
select DATEPART(mm, myDateTimeField) + '-' +
DATEPART(dd, myDateTimeField) + '-' +
DATEPART(year, myDateTimeField)
I don't think it's surprising that a DATETIME field carries time information ;)
In fact, you shouldn't alter the field itself, as you would lose the database engine's ability to use date/time related functions with this field.
(the format used is ISO 8601 which helps the engine to easily identify the single parts)
As others said, it's good practice to format the date when you are retrieving it, either in your SELECT statement or in your application. (for more tips regarding this we would indeed need the information what sql server and what appliccation language you are using).
try converting with Style ID - 110
CONVERT(VARCHAR(10),myDateTimeField,110)
Result will be: 02-07-2011
