--clear Clear out the non-root install and start from scratch.
--no-site-packages DEPRECATED. Retained only for backward compatibility.
Not having access to global site-packages is now the
default behavior.
--system-site-packages
Give the virtual environment access to the global
site-packages.

virtualenv.
--no-pip Do not install pip in the new virtualenv.
--extra-search-dir=DIR
Directory to look for setuptools/pip distributions in.
This option can be used multiple times.
--never-download DEPRECATED. Retained only for backward compatibility.
This option has no effect. Virtualenv never downloads

my debug.log is here: http://pastebin.com/rvDuYDiy
A discussion about this on github was closed last year, but I was unable to use it to solve the problem (I left a note):
https://github.com/matplotlib/matplotlib/issues/3029
I started a reddit thread too.
This did the trick for me:
sudo apt-get install libfreetype6-dev pkg-config
The following command mentioned in the github thread that you mentioned above works for me:
sudo ln -s /usr/include/freetype2/ft2build.h /usr/include/
I had a similar issue solved by:
easy_install -U pip
pip install matplotlib

install mlpy 3.5.0 on mac 10.9 error.Please help me

The following is the error which I am getting. Please help me to fix it.

MLPy depends on GNU Scientific Library (GSL), which you need to install first.
You can install it either with brew install gsl or manually from source.
For manual installation, instructions can be found here. The relevant steps are as follows:
go to: http://www.gnu.org/prep/ftp.html
click on an ftp link close to your location
find the gsl/ directory and click on it
find the gsl-VERSION.tar.gz file, where version is 1.14 or greater. Click on that file to download it.
In a terminal window extract the tar.gz file using tar -xzf gsl-VERSION.tar.gz and then cd to the ./gsl-VERSION directory
Look at the INSTALL file. It will probably tell you to run ./configure, then make, and then make install (and you might have to
login as the superuser (sudo)
I am actually getting the same issue today while installing mlpy. Based on the mlpy documentation. Here is the method to solve this issue.
According to the installation section in the mlpy documentation:
If the GSL header files or shared library are in non-standard locations on your system, use the --include-dirs
and --rpath options to build_ext:
$ python setup.py build_ext --include-dirs=/path/to/header --rpath=/path/to/lib
$ python setup.py install
We have to assign the header and lib. Based on How to obtain and install GSL,
Under Search Paths/Header Search Paths type /opt/local/include
Under Search Paths/Library Search Paths type /opt/local/lib
The quick answer is running the below command:
sudo python setup.py build_ext --include-dirs=/opt/local/include --rpath=/opt/local/lib
sudo python setup.py install
Hope this will be helpful.

Identify error Paperclip and Imagemagick

I recently upgraded to osx 10.8 (Mtn Lion) and now I am having problems with Imagemagick. I get the following error when I try to upload a file:
Command :: identify -format %wx%h '/var/folders/nd/1cw0mqzj0nb3jv8psz_ht9cr0000gn/T/2011Spring20120803-530-2nr1jn.jpg[0]'
[paperclip] An error was received while processing: #<Paperclip::Errors::NotIdentifiedByImageMagickError: /var/folders/nd/1cw0mqzj0nb3jv8psz_ht9cr0000gn/T/2011Spring20120803-530-2nr1jn.jpg is not recognized by the 'identify' command.>
Command :: identify -format %wx%h '/var/folders/nd/1cw0mqzj0nb3jv8psz_ht9cr0000gn/T/2011Spring20120803-530-2nr1jn.jpg[0]'
[paperclip] An error was received while processing: #<Paperclip::Errors::NotIdentifiedByImageMagickError: /var/folders/nd/1cw0mqzj0nb3jv8psz_ht9cr0000gn/T/2011Spring20120803-530-2nr1jn.jpg is not recognized by the 'identify' command.>
I uninstalled / reinstalled homebrew and imagemagick. I even added the rmagick gem (which I didn't need before) but still get the above error.
brew install imagemagick
Error: imagemagick-6.7.7-6 already installed
Here is brew doctor output:
brew doctor
Warning: Setting DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH can break dynamic linking.
You should probably unset it.
Warning: You have uncommitted modifications to Homebrew's core.
Unless you know what you are doing, you should run:
cd /usr/local && git reset --hard
Warning: /usr/bin occurs before /usr/local/bin
This means that system-provided programs will be used instead of those
provided by Homebrew. The following tools exist at both paths:
xml2-config
xmlcatalog
xmllint
xslt-config
xsltproc
Consider amending your PATH so that /usr/local/bin
occurs before /usr/bin in your PATH.
I even added the following to my config/environments/development.rb file
Paperclip.options[:command_path] = "/usr/local/bin"
I uninstalled Imagemagick again and reinstalled it. Now I get the following link errors.
==> Installing imagemagick dependency: jpeg
dyld: DYLD_ environment variables being ignored because main executable (/usr/bin/sudo) is setuid or setgid
==> Downloading http://www.ijg.org/files/jpegsrc.v8d.tar.gz

You can try again using `brew link jpeg'

Error: You must `brew link jpeg' before little-cms can be installed
When I type brew link jpeg
Error: No such file or directory - /usr/local/Cellar/jpeg/8c
When I type brew link libtiff
Error: No such file or directory - /usr/local/Cellar/libtiff/3.9.5
So in summary the links are looking for older versions of jpeg (8c instead of 8d) and libtiff (3.9.5 instead of 4.0.2)
Any ideas on how to fix this?
I was able to finally fix it with 2 commands. Simple symbolic link, seems pretty hackish...
jpeg fix
cd /usr/local/Cellar/jpeg
ln -s 8d 8c
libtiff fix
/usr/local/Cellar/libtiff
ln -s 4.0.2 3.9.5
