For at least 4 years this has been working fine for us, no issues. We use the OutputTo command for a report, give the objectname, the format as PDF and then the network filepath of where it is supposed to be output.
A couple of months ago it was failing with the Error 2501 message.
My helpdesk has abandoned me on this so I was wondering if theres anyone out there who knows why this all of a sudden stopped working.
I created a simple, stripped out Access DB that does two things, outputs to the C drive and then outputs to the filepath based on a text box on a form. That way i can test both UNC and network mapped name for the output. Here is the line of code for the output:
DoCmd.OutputTo acOutputReport, "TestReport", acFormatPDF, txtLocation.Value
Here are the facts....
It ONLY fails when outputing to the network. I can use the code to output to a local drive without issue.
It will fail for both the UNC file path and the mapped drive name
Again - this code worked for years without any issues.
I am not the only user, I have tested the simple code in different machines, in different locations in the building. It doesnt work anywhere.
We are using Access 2007. It also doesnt work for users who just have the runtime dll for Access DB.
This is frustrating.
Hope someone can point me in the right direction.
I went around the office and found two people that it works ok for. This suggest to me there are group permissions preventing anyone in my "group" from outputting to the network. These two people have no problem creating a PDF on any network location.

I have written a rather complex application in Microsoft Access. It is split into front end and back end files. To protect my code, I have compiled it and saved it as a runtime .accde file, which I then changed to an .accdr file to ensure it operated as a runtime. I have created two versions of the application: one for those with 32-bit Office installed and one for those with 64-bit office. I have used Inno Setup to package the application, the data file, and other files such as the icon file, the license file, etc., into an installable package, which works just fine.
Among my team of 27 beta testers of this application, so far 6 have downloaded it, and I have tested it on four of my own computers. On seven of these computers, the installation works perfectly and the application runs with no problems.
On the computers of three of my testers, when they try to run it, they get this error message:
The expression On Open you entered as the event property setting produced the following error: Bad file name or number.
* The expression may not result in the name of a macro, the name of a user-defined function, or [Event Procedure].
I'm pretty sure I know where the code is that's causing the problem, but cannot for the life of me figure out why the application crashes on those 2 computers but not on others.
The On Open event I suspect of causing the problem checks the linked tables, gets their connect string, then looks at the path for that string for the back end database. If it does not find it there, the procedure pops up a file selector dialog and instructs the user to find the data file, then it relinks all the tables.
If anyone could point me in the right direction to fixing this problem, I would be extremely grateful.
This is typically caused by a reference labelled as MISSING.
You have two (three) options:
Run the application on the offending machines with a full version of Access that lets you debug the code
Create a small test application that lists and verifies the references you use, and run this on the offending machines
Remove those two customers
Thanks to all the contributors here. Because of these folks and additional online research, the latest answer I can find is this:
This error occurs on a small percentage of computers on which the app is installed, and no one has yet figured out why, what causes it, or how to fix it. The workaround is to install the 2013 version of the Access runtime, as later versions will still cause the problem.
At least one of the offending computers is running the Click-to-Run version of Office. Still gathering information, but that's the status as of now.
im working on my first big program. I will try to explain short how the important part of the program works, and then try to explain what my problem is.
My program is used by few people, they drive around the Europe and repair our machines. After the work, they start my program, and write a report. Until now the program was generating at the end 3 Files. (PDF file generated by printform, text file which contained the same information's again and the last file that was an Excel file, that one contained Data that was written inside the Datagridview.
These workers, used Email to send all 3 files separated. As you imagine, sometimes that can end bad, cause after work they are tired and sometimes they send the wrong files. So I made a upgrade, which gives the user a possibility to send the files directly from the Program, being sure everything is fine. In background I created a directory where 2 of 3 files always get saved. The problem is, while using printform, there opens a window where the user can select the path. And here start the troubles, some of the workers select different a different path, but then my program wont find the files again(its very important that are 3 files are together). I searched for something that would look like
dim printformpath as string = printform.getpath
is there something that works that way? I was searching but I didn't found anything helpful.
Thank you for understanding & help
Thanks, I added the path to the printFileName property and changed printform settings from Print to preview to print to file :)
Have a nice day
I have an MS Access split database and I'm trying to get it to work with the backend on a new, more secure drive on our network. I've used a UNC path for the backend location.
This database has been running without problem on another drive which is totally public to everyone in the company (~4k people, not secure) for about a year. We have a generic account for users to access the database throughout our factory and haven't encountered this problem before I tried to switch it to the new drive. I've contacted our IT department and they've given myself and all my user's accounts read/write access to the drive, but only I can run it.
Other user accounts get these problems...
All of my forms with objects bound to a table immediately throw a runtime error before even getting to Form_Load.
My userforms will run DLookup functions and execute message boxes but throw a runtime error when they go to execute a query.
I've tried using an 'On Error goto' to try and actually find the problem but it throws a runtime error before that.
I can't think at all what the problem might be. IT have told me I have the same permissions as the other users. Any suggestions on what to do?
In the front end of your DB you may have to change the path which links to the tables. The tables are in the back end of the database, which you have now moved and therefore changed the filepath. the frontend wont find them. You can delete the table links in the front end then use External data > import and Link > Access. In order to re-link the tables using their new filepath. You would then need to redistribute your frontend to the users.
I'm not sure if you have already done this, however, you haven't suggested so in your question. hope this helps, apologies if it was helpless.
I hope you have found an answer to this. I wanted to answer as well, because I had the exact same problem yesterday. It turned out that the location was referring other users back to the folder's shortcut name versus it's full length name (it is called the W drive on my computer and the K drive on theirs). I solved the issue by spelling out the name in full.
I have a suite of MS-Excel scorecard calculators that I send to 200 odd clients. In all client environments save 1 the calculators work 100%. However one client is experiencing the following problem.
Periodically the spreadsheet gets a Microsoft Visual Basic Run-Time Error. The exact message is:
Microsoft Visual Basic
Run-time error '-2147417848(80010108)':
Automation error.
As I mentioned, this happens only at one customer site. Everywhere else the spreadsheet runs 100%.
Can anyone shed some light as to why this happens at one site out of 200 odd.
It is possible to provide some diagnosis.
Do a search of user's system for any *.exd files. They may be in a hidden folder.
Delete any *.exd file you find. They are temporary files and will be rebuilt by Excel.
Try to run the file again. Sorry I can't provide more detailed help, but this is a start based on the information provided.
I'm pulling my hair out because I've run into the following problem with one of my clients:
My program uses extensive VBA automation in Word. Macros are saved in a specific Word template that is attached to each document. Some of the macros save the current document to a temporary folder under [User]/AppData/Roaming/... for further processing.
The client is using Win7 with Office2007 (Student edition). On the computer in question I keep getting an error with something like "No permission to save the file" (can't give exact error message because I've translated it from my language to English)
This happens when the macro tries to "SaveAs" the document.
The strange thing is that it happens only 8 out of 10 times - and not all the time. There are no special permissions set for the temporary folder I'm trying to save to.
I've tried changing Word security settings, tried adding the folder to the trusted folders list, tried using a different folder - to no avail.
The client's computer has Norton Antivirus (or Internet Security, I dunno) installed but temporary disabling it didn't solve the problem. (I know I should only be sure after a full uninstall but I can't do that on the client's comp)
Any help is appreciated!
Update: I've since found the exact error message in English: "Word cannot complete the save due to a file permission error."
I'm now looking on the web for similar forum posts but if you guys know something, please let me know. Thanks!
Is an antivirus or similar program running? On my development computers many similar problems went away when I changed from (vendor "X" security bundle) to ESET.
