How to run process on multiple records? - dynamics-crm-2013

I want to create an on-demand process of some kind in Dynamics CRM 2013 that will run on multiple records of the same type. The process will create an equal number of records of another type, and all will relate to the same parent record. I can imagine how a workflow would be used to create the new child records but I am not sure how I could create the parent record and associate it with the child records.

If you're running on multiple records, then I presume your are starting from a gridview of some sort. If that's the case, then the solution is easy. Just create a custom ribbon button that accepts the selected records as a parameter, and runs a custom javascript. That will accomplish what you need in a nice elegant solution.
Because it's running javascript, you will have full control to be able to do everything you need. One of the features of ribbon buttons, is they can receive the selected records in a parameter as an array.
But if you don't want to do all the work in javascript, you can have the script pass the parameters to a custom Workflow or Action.
As its already been mentioned, a workflow won't be able to do this alone, because it can only run on a single record, and cannot accept multiple records as an input parameter.

Jason I think the point here is to automate the process. Lee you are correct in your assessment that creating the work order with a workflow step is easy to do while creating the child work order items is either difficult or impossible. Even if you managed to hack this together with several workflows triggered by different events during the process the end result would be a UX/maintenance nightmare.
The simplest and best solution is to have piece of plugin logic that you trigger with your workflow. This plugin code would create a new work order and associated work order items based on the context of the service you run the workflow against. If you would like for this action to be triggered by a database operation instead of manually triggered this would be simple to do as well.

You aren't going to be able to do this via a CRM dialog because it can only run against one record. You can accomplish this fairly easily by leveraging existing CRM functionality:
If it doesn't already exist, create a field in your service entity (the Work Order Item) called new_MasterWorkOrder (or something similar) which is link to a Master Work Order entity.
Create your master record - this would be your Overall Work Order.
From your Work Order Item record entry listing, select all the items you want to add to the Master Work Order record created in the previous step. Alternately, you could use an Advanced Find to locate the target records.
Click the Edit button to initiate the CRM bulk/multi-record edit form.
In the new_MasterWorkOrder field, select the Overall Work Order previously created.
Save.
Once the process complete, all of the Work Order Items you selected will now be linked to your Overall Work Order.
It sounds like you might a need a step before this to create a Work Order Item from selected Service entities. You should be able to accomplish this easily by having a workflow which runs takes in a Service entity as a parameter and builds a Work Order Item from it. Once you have these built you can link them to an Overall Work Order using the process above.

How do I prevent a process from running twice if 2 different users run it at the same time in VBA?

I have a front-end form that fetches data from a back-end table. The front-end has multiple users and they use the back-end table simultaneously. The user uses a form to generate reports. Let's say if a user click the "view" button, the background process will insert data to a table and it will show the result.
However, my problem is if 2 different users from different locations click the "view" button from their end machine at the same time, the process on the back-end table runs twice and it duplicates the data.
I know we can delete duplicate data from the table itself but what I'm trying to do is if there's a way to stop one process if there's already a same process running.
I have found a scenario similar to my problem but it is only caused by clicking the button twice.

I hope someone could help me out. It's my firs time to use VBA and I have no previous knowledge/experience with it.
I was not able to prevent a process for running twice but we were able to find a workaround for my concern by assigning a compound index to the table. It no longer accepts duplicates regardless of the process running multiple times simultaneously.

Work Item Query Policy to check workitems match on merge

With our TFS 2015 source control we require developers to check-in changes against work items.
However, we've had a couple of instances where a developer has checked in against one work item within our development branch, but then when merging to our QA branch they've checked in the merged changes to a different work item. An example of this is where a bug has been created underneath a PBI, the changes in dev have been checked in against a task under the bug, but then merged to QA against the PBI itself. This causes us issues with traceability.
I've seen that it's possible to add a check-in policy of "Work Item Query Policy". I'm just wondering if there is a way to write a query that will determine if the work item of a check-in after a merge matches the work item of the source changesets? I'm not necessarily after the exact query (though it would be lovely if someone could provide one :) ), really I'm just wondering whether it's possible or not to have a query to do this - i.e. is the information available to queries in TFS?
You can't do this with the existing policies, you'd need to build a custom policy.
So, technically this is possible. You can access the VersionControlServer object through the PendingChanges object:
this.PendingCheckin.PendingChanges.Workspace.VersionControlServer
You can use that to query the history of the branch in question and grab the work items associated to the check-ins in that branch.
You can check the associated workitems to the current workitem:
this.PendingCheckin.WorkItems
You could probably even provide the option to auto-correct by adding the correct work items to the checkin upon validation.

Access: Update and Append in same form

I am new to using the front end tools/VBA in access, but I am an advanced programmer.
I have a situation where I need to record the date, and method of commute, for a particular individual on a monthly basis. What I have done so far is programatically create a form that lists every day of the month and has a blank space next to it for the user to enter in how he commuted. User only has to fill in if he/she clean commuted. The question is, how do I:
1. Select Records that have already been entered for a month and populate them to a line on my form.
2. Show a blank space for a user to enter info on any date that is not associated with a record.
3. Update any records they changed.
4. Append any new records they enter in the blanks.
I need to do this all on one form so it is easy. I cannot ask the users to navigate.

A standard bound form will do that.
Use the wizard to get started and specify your table as the source.
After much testing and working (strange not find examples of this), I have determined the way to do this.
Do not programmatically create the form.
a. Forms in Access are tied so closely to accesses "form binding" functionality that there are to many limitations trying to work with a programmatically created form. It's very difficult to do.
A better solution is to programmatically create a temporary table that has the correct data structure and bind the form to that temp table.
a. thus the only programmatic part of your form is setting the bindings. Once that is done, you can rely on the form binding in Access to work easily with your Select, Update, and Append functions.

How to explicitly call TIBDataSet.RefreshSQL

I have list of records in TIBDataSet (Embarcadero Delphi) and I need to locate and modify one record in this list. There is chance that underlying database record has been changed by other queries and operations since TIBDataSet had been opened. Therefor I would like to call RefreshSQL for this one record (to get the latest data) before making any changes and before making post. Is it possible to do so and how?
I am not concerned about state of other records and I am sure that the record under consideration will always be updated and those updates will be commited before I need to changes this record from TIBDataSet.
As far as I understand then RefreshSQL is used for automatic retrieve of changes after TIBDataSet has posted upates to database. But I need manual (explicit) retrieval of the latest state before doing updates.
Try adding a TButton to your form and add the following code to its OnClick handler:

and set a breakpoint on it.
Then run your app and another one (e.g. 2nd instance of it) and change a row in the second app, and commit it back to the db.
Navigate to the changed row in your app and click btnRefresh and use the debugger to trace execution.
You'll find that TDataSet.Refresh calls its InternalRefresh which in turn calls TIBCustomDataSet.InternalRefresh. That calls inherited InternalRefresh, which does nothing, followed by TIBCustomDataSet.InternalRefreshRow. If you trace into that, you'll find that it contructs a temporary IB query to retrieve the current row from the server, which should give you what you want before making changes yourself.
So that should do what you want. The problem is, it can be thoroughly confusing trying to monitor the data in two applications because they may be in different transaction states. So you are rather dependent on other users' apps "playing the transactional game" with you, so everyone sees a consistent view of the data.

Logging When Files Are Saved, Modified or Deleted Using VBA

I work with VBA in MS Access databases. I'd like to be able to log when files are saved, modified or deleted without having to update the existing code to do the logging when the pertinent events take place. I want the time, location and the name of the file.

However, it only allows for monitoring a particular location (path). I want to be able to log regardless of where the save, modify or delete takes place. I'm only allowed to program in the MS Office environment in this situation. It seems as though using the Windows API is going to be how this task will be achieved. However, I don't have much experience working with the API. Is there an easier way to achieve what I want that doesn't involve using the API?
Have you worked with After_Updates or After_Insert macros? Also, is your application split? Meaning there's a front-end and a back-end of the database. You can create a separate table that mirrors that table that you need to track changes for. Every time a table is updates, run a macro that inserts a row to that table.
I'm assuming you're saving files to the database. If that's the case, add a after_update or after_insert macro that can keep track of when then files are being modified or added to the table.
