Suppose I want to install python2.7 with yum, and do
sudo yum install python27
This will install a python2.7 in the /usr/bin directory. However, the symbolic link /usr/bin/python still points to python2.6.
Is there a yum command that can manage this symbolic link rather than doing it manually? I know the port select in MacPorts does so, and am looking for a counterpart in yum. Thanks a lot!
Unless the distribution has been set up to handle this sort of thing (the way debian and some others are) you do not want to be changing the default value of something like /usr/bin/python because you will break anything the distribution packages which depends on the default python being the version of python in the default python package.
Things built against the python27 package almost certainly use /usr/bin/python2.7 when they need to run python scripts and/or on their shebang lines. Things packaged by the default system almost certainly just use /usr/bin/python assuming that is the default system python version.

I'm using Ubuntu 14.04 and I am updating the rpmbuild spec file of an application that now uses Qt.
The packages that I need are the following:
sudo apt-get build-essential
sudo apt-get install mesa-common-dev -y
sudo apt-get install libglu1-mesa-dev -y

sudo apt-get qtwebengine5-dev
I know the spec file has "BuildRequires" and "Requires" dependency tags...any help in writing this as well as some examples would be helpful. I have a working spec file I just need to add the dependencies.
I think there is some confusion here. spec files are used to generate rpm files. However Ubuntu uses deb files.
Supposing you really want to create an rpm; then you need to know this:
BuildRequires
these packages are required for building the rpm. Typically you will need build-essential and the '*-dev` packages for building your application
Requires
these packages are required upon installation for your application to work; mostly you don't need your build-tools anymore, but you still need the qt5-default for example.
PS: on a little side note I might be one of the only people in the world building deb packages using spec files with a special conversion script https://bitbucket.org/klaussfreire/spec2deb/src/default/ but I wouldn't really recommend that.
I just installed Windows Subsystem for Linux for the first time and downloaded the Debian distribution from the Windows Store.
The first thing I tried to do was use the "mv" command. The second thing was to run "man mv" because I don't remember how to use it. But I received the error:
-bash: man: command not found
It looks like the package I want is called manpages. But I can't install that:
sudo apt-get install manpages
[sudo] password for pi:

Package manpages is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source

How do I get the man command up and running?
apt update to update the local package lists followed by apt install man-db to install the actual package.
I want to add to elken's answer that apparently, the 'man-db' packages doesn't cover all the manpages. For example, I needed documentation for the C stdio library (fopen, fgets, ...), and for that I had to install 'manpages-dev':
sudo apt install manpages-dev

In my site I am getting an error : an error occurred while processing this directive
It was working fine before moving to the new server. So when I checked I found that mod_perl module is missing. So I tried to install it by downloading the module to the server and then tried to run using Perl Makefile.pl but it was asking for apache src and I was not able to find it. I can see /usr/bin/apache/ folder but no source file inside the folder.
So I tried to install the module from Cpanel but I got the following error:
The C compiler is not functional and auto repair failed. Perl module installs require a working C compiler. Please repair the C compiler and try again.
Please let me know how to install it as I have tried most of the cases searching the net.

It's probably best to use your distro's packaging system to install mod_perl, especially, if apache is installed from a package too.
Yum based systems:
yum install mod_perl
Deb based systems
apt-get install mod_perl
you may need to enable the module using a2enmod
Mostly gcc is either corrupted or not present on your system. Please try to re/install gcc on your system
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install build-essential
On Redhat:
yum update
yum install devtoolset-2-toolchain
It seems like a problem with your installation of gcc. You're using CloudLinux, so you should use yum to reinstall gcc.
$ sudo -i yum install gcc
But you don't need gcc if you install the pre-build packages.
$ sudo -i yum install mod_perl
Either way, you're going to need to get to grips with package installation for your system - and for that you're going to need root access.
Today my Ubuntu updated Mono to 4.2.1.102. It will not allow a certain program I absolutely need to run. How can I down-grade it to 4.0.5.1? I have tried...
sudo apt-get install mono-complete=4.0.5.1
That doesn't work.
Edit your /etc/apt/sources.list.d/mono-xamarin.list and change:
deb http://download.mono-project.com/repo/debian wheezy main
to:
deb http://download.mono-project.com/repo/debian wheezy/snapshots/4.0.5.1 main
That will pin it to version 4.0.5.1.
FYI: Make sure that you do not have any alpha/beta repos for mono in any of your /etc/apt/sources/list.d/xxxxx.list files.
Basic Steps to Downgrade:
sudo apt-get remove mono-complete
# Edit your mono-xamarin.list and pin it to the version of your choice.
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install mono-complete
Accessing older releases If for some reason you want to pin an older
version of Mono rather than updating to the latest, you can modify the
Debian repository to “wheezy/snapshots/X.XX.X” instead of “wheezy”.
For example, “wheezy/snapshots/3.10.0” will lock you to that version.
These snapshots will cease receiving updates as soon as the next major
Mono version gets uploaded - for example, as soon as Mono 3.12 gets
uploaded, 3.10 will never receive updates.
On RPM distributions, force the package version in your package
manager - all older versions are published in the YUM metadata and
should be available.

If, like me, you followed the official guide: https://www.mono-project.com/download/stable/ then you would have added an apt key and created
/etc/apt/sources.list.d/mono-official-stable.list
You can keep the key, but remove the file above using sudo rm -r /etc/apt/sources.list.d/mono-official-stable.list
Then make sure you follow the best answer above by editing the mono-xamarin.list file for the version you want and remove the version of mono you have.
Then apt update, then install mono-complete. An easy way to know you are correctly downloading and compiling a different version is that apt will prompt you asking if you want to download the files, and the size will be different.

My system is Ubuntu 18.04.
I am a novice with zeroMQ and I am stuck at binding ØMQ with java on a server running CentOS release 5.9.
Unfortunately, I do not have super user/root privileges on the server and am trying to install ØMQ as a normal user with restricted privileges. I have installed ØMQ by following instructions on http://www.zeromq.org/area:download
Make sure that libtool, autoconf, automake are installed.
Check whether uuid-dev package, uuid/e2fsprogs RPM or equivalent on your system is installed.
Unpack the .tar.gz source archive.
Run ./configure, followed by make.
Could not run the following obviously
To install ØMQ system-wide run sudo make install.
On Linux, run sudo ldconfig after installing ØMQ.
Then I attempted to install jzmq.
Cloned [git clone https://github.com/zeromq/jzmq.git]
Ran autogen.sh
Ran configure
At this point I get the following error
checking for ZeroMQ... no
checking zmq.h usability... no
checking zmq.h presence... no
checking for zmq.h... no
configure: error: cannot find zmq.h
As a result of the above error I am not able to run java tests and get error "no jzmq in java.library.path".
Can anybody help/direct me to how to get java binding for zeromq work when you dont have root privileges to install it? Its difficult to get IT department to install a new software on servers.
Appreciate your help.
Note: I do not have write permissions to /usr directory

This can be overcome by adding --with-zeromq=/home/user/zeromq (installation directory of zeromq)
./configure --with-zeromq=/home/user/zeromq
Other steps include
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/home/user/zeromq/lib
You can also use JeroMQ (https://github.com/zeromq/jeromq) which is a pure Java implementation of ZeroMQ
I got this working by running autogen.sh on OEL 6 then running configure / compiling / installing on CentOS 5.9. I briefly looked into why autogen.sh was failing and the problem was the tool chain was too old. Since I had a more up-to-date system with a modern tool chain available running autogen.sh on something other than CentOS 5 was the easiest path for me. I'm sure it works fine with other modern Linux variants, I had OEL 6 at my finger tips.
I also did not have access to a standard directory for installation. To get that working I added zmq.jar to my class path, and the run-time linker needed to be able to find the zeromq and jzmq run-time libraries.
I faced the same issue on CentOS 6.5 and found that you need to install "gcc-c++" for this to work.
I used the following to install dependencies:
yum -y install jdk zeromq-devel unzip libtool gcc autoconf automake gcc-c++ python
Note that "jdk" comes from our private repository and it's same what can be downloaded from java.com

Actually, I ended up having this same issue, and the following script worked for me, where I installed zeromq into ~ (so that I have ~/lib contains libzmq.a libzmq.la libzmq.so libzmq.so.3 libzmq.so.3.1.0 pkgconfig)
./autogen.sh ./configure --prefix=$HOME \ #because you don't have root privileges
--with-zeromq=$HOME --includedir=$HOME/include/ --libdir=$HOME/lib/
./make
./make -n install
#to check to see if it installs it to the right location
make install
