MSCOMCTL.OCX missing on Windows 2008 R2 - vba

Migrating a legacy Visual Basic application from Windows 2000 to Windows 2008 R2, I get the error
Component 'MSCOMCTL.OCX' or one of its dependencies not correctly
registered: a file is missing or invalid
Installing VisualBasic6-KB896559-v1-ENU.exe didn't help

For some reason MSCOMCTL.OCX didn't get copied / registered to the correct folder when installing the downloaded runtime VisualBasic6-KB896559-v1-ENU.exe from the KB896559 at https://www.microsoft.com/en-US/download/details.aspx?id=10019.
These manual steps fixed it:
Use 7-Zip to unpack VisualBasic6-KB896559-v1-ENU.exe (NB: executing this file won't install anything!)
Copy the contents to %systemroot%\SysWow64
From command line (run cmd as administrator), execute
%systemroot%\SysWoW64\regsvr32.exe %systemroot%\SysWOW64\mscomctl.ocx
Try running your archaic Visual Basic app again!

Restore older DTExec.exe version?

We have SSMS 2012 installed on several servers (mix of physical and virtual hardwares) with the 64-bit DTExec.exe Version 11.0.2100.60 that we use to run SSIS packages. The SSIS packages are stored in a Microsoft SQL Server 2016 on another physical server.
On one of the SSMS 2012 servers, I installed SQL Server Data Tools for VS2017. Since then, one of our SSIS packages would not run to completion. It aborts about halfway, specifically, when it is about to run (or already running?) the script component of the package. When it aborts, %ERRORLEVEL% is set to a high negative number (-1073741819). I make sure the 64-bit DTExec.exe Version 11.0.2100.60 is the one being used to run the package by putting its path, C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\DTS\Binn, ahead of any other versions’ paths in the PATH environment variable. (It also shows “64-bit” and the version number inside the DOS box where the package is running.)
If I run the same failing package from another SSMS 2012 server using its local copy of the same 64-bit DTExec.exe 11.0.2100.60, the package runs fine. So I suspect the 64-bit DTExec.exe 11.0.2100.60 on the server where I installed SSDT 2017 somehow got “corrupted” (?).
I have uninstalled SSDT 2017 but still the package fails.
Curiously, if I use the 32-bit version instead of DTExec.exe with the same version 11.0.2100.60, the package runs fine. So all the more reason for me to suspect that the 64-bit DTExec.exe version was “corrupted”.
Is there any way to “repair” the 64-bit DTExec.exe Version 11.0.2100.60 to restore it to its former glory? I realize we can just use the 32-bit version but we’d like to use the same version of DTExec.exe across all our SSMS 2012 servers so they all share identical PATH environment variables, .BAT files, etc..
Any leads appreciated – thank you!
EDIT: I'd also like to add that before failing, a DOS window pops up then very quickly closes. The DOS window seems blank but it could be that it just closes very fast for me to see. On other SSMS servers where the packages runs to completion, no DOS window pops up.

Why is VS 2010 unable to find/load htmllite.dll when installing?

I am trying to install VS 2010 in my PC but when I clicked on setup file it shows an error like:
unalble to find/load htmllite.dll
But htmllite.dll already exists within the file.
The same thing is happening again when I'm trying to install SQL Server 2008
unalble to find/load setup.rll
But I already have setup.rll file.
After you mount the image, do not run directly, but copy all the files into a folder on your computer , and after that run setup.exe. I had the same issue with microsoft visual studio 2010 on my laptop with windows 8. Good luck!

Visual Studio Unable to Add Data Connection to SQL Server

Im trying to add my local SQL Server database to Visual Studio so I can grab the connection string from it but I am getting this error message:
As you can see the Test succeeds but when I try to add I receive error.
I figured out that you need to have SDK.sfc 11.0.0.0 installed. I only had 10.0.0.0 installed.
You can use the link here to download "Microsoft® System CLR Types for Microsoft® SQL Server® 2012" and "Microsoft® SQL Server® 2012 Shared Management Objects"
Download Link
I think these are normally installed with VS 2012 but in either case it fixed the issue. You can check your version in the assembly path:
C:\windows\assembly
The install does not require a restart but you will need to close and reopen your Visual Studio.
It seems that you are missing some updates from Microsoft: one link
You could search with google/bing/whatever and find a lot of hints to get this working!
for both type (32 bit or 64 bit )
Open URL http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35580
Download ENU\x86\SQLSysClrTypes.msi
Download ENU\x86\SharedManagementObjects.msi
Install ENU\x86\SQLSysClrTypes.msi
Install ENU\x86\SharedManagementObjects.msi
Restart your Visual Studio and now Everything will work smooth.
This fix was for the error (version 11.0.0.0)

Testacular install fails, no vcbuild.exe

I'm trying to install Testacular (using nmp) on a Windows 8 Professional (64 bit) laptop, but it fails when it tries to install socket.io as part of this process. The error I get is
Could not load the Visual C++ component "VCBuild.exe".
To fix this, 1) install the .NET Framework 2.0 SDK, 2) install Microsoft Visual
Studio 2005 or 3) add the location of the component to the system path if it
is installed elsewhere.
I apparently have .NET framework 3.5 installed (it's checked under the add/remove Windows components bit in Control Panel), although I've not managed to find a vcbuild.exe. I tried installing an old copy of VS2005 but this resulted in a different error about an invalid project (.vcproj) file.
Can anyone suggest how I might get this working? Weirdly it installed fine on my work computer, which is very similar to the one on which it won't install (they're both 64 bit Win 8 Pro).
I ran into the same issue. I fixed this by adding this to environmental variable PATH: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\VC\vcpackages so that it can find vc build.
In Visual Studio 2010, the command line tool vcbuild.exe is replaced by msbuild.exe. So, please make sure you have right Visual studio.

XML Generation Error Installing SQL Server Express 2008 on Windows 8

Disclaimer: Yes, I know Windows 8 is a pre-release and things won't necessarily work. I still need to do this.
I'm trying to install SQL Server Express 2008 R2 on Windows 8 32-bit (via Virtual Box). When I run the installer, I get an error:
Database installer returned error code -2147024893 (The system cannot find the path specified.)
The web installer didn't work either. WPI's log file tells me:
DownloadManager Information: 0 : Install exit code for product 'SQL Server Express 2008 R2' is -2068774911
I tried running this in compatibility mode for Windows 7. I can run the installer, click through the setup screen, and finally I get this error:
There was an error generating the XML document.
Error code: 0x84B10001.
How do I get this working, or, how do I debug/triage this? I looked through the logs, but I'm not too sure what they said; it might've been a registry-write error. Running in admin mode just causes the installer to not load, or a nice BSOD:
The answer, ironically, is quite simple -- I was installing 32-bit SQL Server on a 32-bit Windows 8. Instead, I moved to installing a 64-bit SQL Server on a 64-bit Windows 8.
Problem solved.
