SQL Server SQL Agent - sql-server-2012

I'm looking to schedule some scripts from my SQL Server 2012 installation. I have installed the SQLManagementStudio_x64_ENU.exe from http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=43351, since that is the full version, not express. It didnt install a Database Engine though. I went back and installed the SQLEXPR_x64_ENU.exe database engine only, but when I go to start the SQL Agent service, I get the error "The edition of SQL Server that installed this service does not support SQL Server Agent"
Did I use the wrong database engine? Or install in the wrong order?

While the first comment is correct. I believe you can schedule scripts from Windows Task Scheduler utilizing the sqlcmd utility even on SQL Server Express.

Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 2008 missing any instance of a server

So i just installed the Server Management and when i try to connect to server it gives me an error. I went to SQL Server Configuration Manager and there i dont have nothing. I have empty lists where the server instances should be. So i dont have any running local server.
So someone can tell me how i'm suppose to set some server instance or what i'm doing wrong ?
I installed the Server Management on Windows 7, 32-bit OS, and i need exacly this version of 2008 and i dont need the updated versions at this point.
SQL Server Management tool is just a GUI for you SQL Server. SQL Server is a separate installation. If you are trying to control a remote SQL Server you will need to add that to the management UI, local servers should show up automatically if you install SQL Server locally.
You can download SQL Server 2008 - Express Edition from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30438
It will install SQL Server which your Management Studio can connect.

After installing SQL Server 2014 Express can't find local db

I have downloaded and installed SQL Server 2014 Express
(from this site: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/server-cloud/products/sql-server-editions/sql-server-express.aspx#Installation_Options).
The problem is that I can't connect/find my local DB server, and I can't develop DB on my local PC. How can I reach my local server?
My system consists of Windows 8.1 (no Pro or Enterprise editions) 64 bits
Checking the configuration of SQL Server with SQL Server 2014 Configuration Manager tool, I see an empty list selecting "SQL Server Services" from the tree at the left. Below you can find a screenshot.
In the Windows Services list, there is just only one service: "SQL Server VSS Writer"
EDIT
My installation window of SQL Server 2014 is the following:
Most probably, you didn't install any SQL Server Engine service. If no SQL Server engine is installed, no service will appear in the SQL Server Configuration Manager tool. Consider that the packages SQLManagementStudio_Architecture_Language.exe and SQLEXPR_Architecture_Language.exe, available in the Microsoft site contain, respectively only the Management Studio GUI Tools and the SQL Server engine.
If you want to have a full featured SQL Server installation, with the database engine and Management Studio, download the installer file of SQL Server with Advanced Services.
Moreover, to have a sample database in order to perform some local tests, use the Adventure Works database.
Considering the package of SQL Server with Advanced Services, at the beginning at the installation you should see something like this (the screenshot below is about SQL Server 2008 Express, but the feature selection is very similar). The checkbox next to "Database Engine Services" must be checked. In the next steps, you will be able to configure the instance settings and other options.
Execute again the installation process and select the database engine services in the feature selection step. At the end of the installation, you should be able to see the SQL Server services in the SQL Server Configuration Manager.
I downloaded a different installer "SQL Server 2014 Express with Advanced Services" and found Instance Features in it. Thanks for Alberto Solano's answer, it was really helpful.
My first installer was "SQL Server 2014 Express". It installed only SQL Management Studio and tools without Instance features. After installation "SQL Server 2014 Express with Advanced Services" my LocalDB is now alive!!!
I have noticed that after installation of SQL server 2012 express on Windows 10 you must install ENU\x64\SqlLocalDB.MSI from official Microsoft download site. After that, you could run SqlLocalDB.exe.
Just download and install LocalDB 64BIT\SqlLocalDB.msi can also solve this problem. You don't really need to uninstall and reinstall SQL Server 2014 Express with Advanced Services.
Also, if you just installed localDB, you won't see the instance in the configuration manager. You would need to initiate it first, and then connect to it using server name (localdb)\mssqllocaldb.

I faced the same issue. Just download and install the SQL Server suite from the following link :http://www.microsoft.com/en-US/download/details.aspx?id=42299
restart your SSMS and you should be able to "Register Local Servers" via right-click on "Local Servers Groups", select "tasks", click "register local servers"

Do I have both SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server 2008 installed?

When in 'SQL Server Configuration Manager' I see, under 'SQL Server Services', 2 items that look like SQL Server's:
SQL Server (sqlexpress)
SQL Server (mssqlserver)
Does that mean I have 2 versions installed at the same time? The 'SQL Server (mssqlserver) is currently stopped).
You have two instances. They might or might not be the same version (meaning 2005/2008).
Express is just an SKU / edition from the myriad of different editions.
You can have the same version or multiple versions/SKUs installed as different instances on the same machine.
So unless someone wittingly set up a new instance with the name "sqlexpress", you probably have two kinds of products installed (both can be 2008 or both can be 2005 or they can be different - it is just that one of them is presumably the Express SKU while the other is say Standard.)
You can get more information on the instances by using ##VERSION.
It looks like you got SQL Server Express installed with Visual Studio and then later installed SQL Server 2008. I've done this before and the best solution I found was to completely uninstall SQL Server Express and SQL Server 2008. Remove all the files in the Microsoft SQL Server directory in Program Files, then reinstall SQL Server 2008. If you still have problems getting the 2008 instance to be the default, you may also need to uninstall Visual Studio.
In the future, if you're going to install the development (or other) version of SQL Server locally, I suggest making sure you install it before Visual Studio. The VS install won't install SQL Server Express if it detects an existing SQL Server instance on the system.
BTW, you can verify if this is true by using the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel item.
SQLExpress is the light/free edition, usually used for developers or very lightweight applications.
MSSQLServer is the full blown SQL install.
So yes you have 2 "SQL Server" installs, but they are different products, I can't say which versions based on your provided data.
You have two SqlServer instances installed on your system. One is SqlServer Express Edition and the other one a Sql Server. I can't say which version or edition.
Maybe you can find some more information in the registry (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft).
I'd vote against removing either one--SQL server does fine with multiple instances and they are good for different things. For example, lots of open source projects presume a local copy of sql express at .\SQLEXPRESS for development use. Whereas you can't write analysis service stuff with SQL Express.
Or, its not a problem. Those aren't the droids your looking for. Move along.

Download SQL SERVER AGENT - Microsoft SQL Server

I have downloaded SQL SERVER MANAGEMENT STUDIO but SQL SERVER AGENT is not found.
Should I install it separately?
Can anybody tell me the link where SQL SERVER AGENT is available as a Freeware to download it?
The agent is not visible if you use SQL Server Management Studio Express to connect to an SQL Server. You need to install the client tools that come with the server setup to get SQL Server Management Studio.
If you are using SQL Server Express, it has no agent.
SQL Server Agent is a service of SQL Server, not SQL Server Management Studio (which is, in and of itself, an administration tool).
Since SQL Server Agent is part of SQL Server, it's not free. You can learn about creating a job in SQL Server Agent here.
What, pray tell, are you actually trying to do?
You (or your company) will need to purchase the full version of SQL server in order to use this functionality.
The other option is to find the command-line instruction that will achieve what you want and then use Windows Task Scheduler to run the command on the schedule you want.

Can SQL Server Express be used to effectively administrate a SQL Server Standard/Enterprise installation?

We have a number of MS SQL Server 2005 installations (both Standard and Enterprise editions) on our webservers. From time to time I need to administrate them from home. Right now I'm using Remote Desktop to connect to my work machine, but I'd prefer to install SQL Server Management Studio on my home machine so that I can work more efficiently. I don't have a spare license, so I was wondering... if I installed MS SQL Server 2005 Express on my home machine, could I use it to effectively administrate the higher-end installations on our servers?
See this question:
What's the difference between SQL Server Management Studio and the Express edition?
Also, if you have any trouble doing anything from Managment Studio Express, there are third-party tools out there that have no trouble connecting to SQL Server.
Personally, I've noticed a few things missing out of the box:
Import/Export
Activity Monitor
Job monitor
However, the question I linked to indicated you may be able to restore most of that for use when you connect to a full sql server edition.
If you do a client tools only install of the standard edition (ie. just SSMS) and don't install the database, agent, etc. then I'm pretty sure you don't need another license and won't be violating the EULA. If you want a full install the SQL Server developer edition is only $49 and comes with everything.

I'm not sure if you can create backup schedules and maintenance plans in Management Studio Express.
