How does the Jedi API help in using the Windows API? - api

I have an idea of what the Jvcl is..it's a set of components and you install them, but what I'm really interested in is the Jedi win32 API conversion stuff. I'm unsure what to do with them or how to use them.
You don't install them do you? Say, for instance, I want to use the API SendInput or similar; how do I find how to use it within Jedi API? Is that what Jedi API is even for?
I've looked all over their site and searched for tutorials with no luck. I even downloaded all the help files I could find but I'm still lost.

The JEDI API is made up of a number of header translations of the Windows API. The Delphi RTL has a good portion of the Windows API translated. This is implemented in a number of units, the main one being the Windows unit.
However, the Delphi header translations are incomplete. What's more each new version of Windows comes with a swathe of new APIs. Embarcadero catches up slowly and in some cases chooses not to translate.
The JEDI API project attempts to be a more complete set of header translations. It is still incomplete, but it has more coverage than the units shipped with Delphi. It is particularly useful if you are using an older version of Delphi where the supplied header translations are very out of date.

openerplib is a PHP library, probably not what you want if you're planning to use Pyhton.
xmlrpclib is Python standard library for XML-RPC. You can perfectly work with it, but it won't be the most pleasant library to work with. See the official docs for more details on it.
The other libraries are wrappers around xmlrpclib.
oerplib and odoorpc are from the same author, and I believe that the former is an older version (pre Odoo rebranding), so you should prefer the later. It is up to date, so it can be an option.
erppeek is up to date and is the project with more more activity and contributors. It also provides an API wrapper, but is build to be a console client for Odoo servers. AFAIK is widely used for that.
My advice it to have a look at the doc of odoorpc and erppeek and pick that one you feel better suited for your needs.

what is swagger exactly ? And why doesn't the online editor run requests?

I've spent the last few days trying to understand if I should use api blueprint, RAML or swagger.
It looks like swagger has the biggest community but the closer I look the more I feel that it greatly lacks in documentation (I was forced to look at the code many times to try and integrate it with my current project), many github issues and stackoverflow questions are unanswered.
Is it possible that I am missing something here?
All I want is a tool to help me write the API documentation and test the endpoints.
Why must swagger become part of the server logic?? If I create swagger files in the editor and then serve them to the UI directly it breaks..
As far as I can tell it even makes the server slightly slower and forces the existence of many clumsily maintained integrations :p What am I missing here?
We're trying to work a lot on improving the documentation of Swagger. It's a bit more difficult when many of the projects are community-driven and not managed by a single organization.
We actually try to reply to issues on github quickly (we don't always succeed) and we have our own google group for general questions so we follow stackoverflow somewhat less.
The editor you mention is a new tool as part of the work on Swagger 2.0 and it's not final yet. As such, it still have a few bugs and missing features. The UI is also in the process of being adapted to Swagger 2.0 and the same limitations apply to it.
You most certainly don't have to integrate it with your server and you can expose the documentation statically. The advantage of integrating it with the server is that it's easier to maintain if the API changes.
You can try RAML + ramlev + Abao
The steps should be
Write API Spec in RAML with your fav editor, ie. Atom, vim
Validate your RAML with ramlev
Implement the server logic according API Spec
Validate server logic with Abao

Evernote API in Unity3D

Since I haven't got any response on the Unity3d or Evernote forums, I'll try it here.
The last year I have worked a lot with Unity3D, mostly because the good integration with the Vuforia Augmented Reality library and the fact that publishing for multiple platforms is a piece of cake.
Now I want to show notes in an AR setting and am looking at the Evernote API for this. I couldn't find anything about using this with Unity, I can see why this is not the most common combination.
My question is: do you think I can access the Evernote API through Unity? If so, how should I do this? Or is it for this purpose perhaps wiser to make (parts of) the application with Eclipse/xCode?

The Evernote API has a C# SDK which you should be able to call through Unity. In terms of how to do it, you will probably need to download the SDK and follow the instructions yourself. Their github seems like a good starting point.
One thing to note is that Unity's .Net library for mobile clients are quite limited and with webplayer you will need to deal with sandbox security issues. But start with the standalone build first and see how you go

Some questions about Windows' DLLs?

I wrote an application in a JS-based framework called Titanium. This framework doesn't have some functions, so I'm bundling autohotkeys, and using STDIN/STDOUT to connect the two. Autohotkeys has a cool function DllCall which allows to interconect with the operating system and should help me close the gap between the JS-based framework and the missing functionality.
To give you an example, Titanium allows me to bind to a specific port. But if I bind to 0 and let the OS pick a free port (as it should), it will work, but there's no way to tell which port it actually bound to.
Now since I come from web applications, DLLs are new to me; so I have a few questions:
Is there like a big doc with all the DLLs and all their methods?
How do I know if some methods are dependent on some services? I mean I've heard some rely on RPCs, COM, COM+, WMIs, etc. which a user can turn off and if it does, these methods won't work. Is there also a place where I can get more info on this?
Are there any off-the-shelf DLLs, with their methods, which I can trust that they will work 100% from XP up to 7?
Are there any access permissions I should know about? Are they documented.
If you also come from web programming, is there anything else I should be aware about?

You can find a (mostly) complete documentation of all Windows API functions (which reside in DLLs) either online on MSDN or offline using the documentation from the Windows SDK.
For example look at the documentation for SHGetSpecialFolderPath. There you can find various information, like the DLL (shell32.dll), any prerequisites (min. IE 4) and the platform availablity. (min. Windows 2000) Also security considerations are documented.
All API functions are documented more or less in this manner. A good starting point is the Windows Developer Reference. From there you can browse through the many API functions.
Basically the answer to every question is that you should search MSDN for the functions or APIs you are interested in and read the documentation there:

They document which operating systems the functions are available in so it should be easy to write something that works in Windows XP and up.

Thunderbird scripting

I need to process a number of messages in my Thunderbird.app (Mac OS X Snow Leopard, Intel Core 2 Duo), delete a few based on some criteria, export some others, move a small part of them to a special folder and create a filing hierarchy to go with it all - programmatically.
With Outlook I used to enjoy VBScript + the COM object model: it would do all of the above simply and intuitively.
What can I use to achieve the same with Thunderbird?
If multiple options are available, here are my current preferences in terms of languages (although I can adapt to most things): Python, C++, AppleScript, PHP, Perl, Bash, ...
If I need to move to a Windows box to use .NET and the like, I can (yet I'd imaging the most popular bindings come from the open-source world?!) If there was a command-line tool that did what I need, I'd use that! (thunderbird.sh show messages; thunderbird.sh create folder X as child of folder Y;)
You can develop Thunderbird extensions in a similar way to Firefox extensions in XUL and Javascript.

You could also look at the tbscript plugin, although it does have external dependencies - it uses Python.

For current versions of Thunderbird, documentation is at https://developer.thunderbird.net. This has an add-on page that comes with a tutorial for developing a "Hello World" MailExtension.
The MailExtension API is new for Thunderbird 68 (although some parts were published for earlier versions) and allows one to write JavaScript to e.g. handle messages.
If you need a general purpose GUI scripting solution, try Autohotkey, it's very calable.
