I think you are using old bootstrap/Jquery versions. Check this plunk.
Ok I was able to reproduce the error in firefox.
you are missing the 'navbar-header' div. That should fix it.

How to code the "holy grail" of nav with custom brand logo img

How to create following nav/brand logo responsive behavior based on the standard bootstrap nav code, please?
Illustration: Responsive nav behavior
Code: http://www.bootply.com/8suUu6W5ZB#
Thanks for any help!
I have not used bootply before, So I don't know whether tags for html, body is included by bootply automatically. But I could not see those tags in your html, but could see styles for those. Basic structure of the html with bootstrap would like this. I have included a nav bar for you. So use this as a template to work on your project.
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html lang="en">
<head>
<meta charset="utf-8">
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1 maximum-scale=1 user-scalable=none">

<link rel="stylesheet" href="css/main.css">
<script src="js/jquery.js"></script>
<script src="js/bootstrap.js"></script>
</head>
<body>
<div class="container">
<nav class="navbar navbar-default navbar-fixed-top">
<div class="container">
<div class="navbar-header">
<button type="button" class="navbar-toggle collapsed" data-toggle="collapse" data-target="#navbar" aria-expanded="false" aria-controls="navbar">
<span class="sr-only">Toggle navigation</span>
<span class="icon-bar"></span>
<span class="icon-bar"></span>
<span class="icon-bar"></span>
</button>
<a class="navbar-brand" href="#">A WV Gates Corporation</a>
</div>
<div id="navbar" class="navbar-collapse collapse">
<ul class="nav navbar-nav">
<li class="active">Home</li>
<li>Profile</li>
<li>About</li>
</ul>
</div>
</div>
</div>
</body>
</html>
Make sure to include the files of bootstrap and jquery in the appropriate paths!

First of all, you should put your shiv and respond at the <head> tag, like they show here. It makes it possible detect browser's features before the whole page is loaded.
Second, here they say that serving respond.js from file:// pseudo-protocol is disabled for security purposes. Even serving it from a CDN, apparently, won't work, since here is indicated that for serving from another domain you must make some configuration.
So finally, I fixed all of it, ran the following code in localhost, not from file://, and the navbar works like a charm:
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html lang="en">
<head>
<meta charset="utf-8">
<meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=edge">
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">

SOLUTION demo (as answer)
Try this:
DEMO
Use padding top in the <li>
<li id="first" style="padding-top: 50px;">first</li>
Protip: Read the docs!
Body padding required
The fixed navbar will overlay your other content, unless you add padding to the top of the <body>. Try out your own values or use our snippet below. Tip: By default, the navbar is 50px high.
body { padding-top: 70px; }
Make sure to include this after the core Bootstrap CSS.
