I'm trying to run an access SELECT query through a button on a subform. I need to use one of the fields in the subform as criteria for the query. I currently have this:
SELECT id, issue, complaint, action, reviewer, ticket
FROM tblEscalations
WHERE asin = Forms![form_name]![subform_name].[id];
Every time I run the query, I get the pop up asking for a parameter value for WHERE asin = Forms![form_name]![subform_name].[id];. Can you please tell me what's wrong with this?
I've only been doing Access for like a month and a half so the the answer might be very simple.
When you refer to a control which is contained on a subform, you must reference it via the name of the subform control rather than the name of the form which is contained in the subform control.
And the subform control name can be different than the name of the form which it contains.
Since Forms![form_name]![subform_name].[id] isn't working, subform_name may be the name of the form. You need to substitute the name of the subform control:
Forms!form_name!YourSubformControl!id
When you have that name correct, running this statement in the Immediate window will tell you "SubForm":
? TypeName(Forms!form_name!YourSubformControl!id)
Here is an Immediate window session on my system with a form named frmParent which includes a subform control named Child2. And that control contains a form named fsubColortable which in turn contains a text box named ID:
? TypeName(Forms!frmParent!Child2)
SubForm
? Forms!frmParent!Child2.Form.Name
fsubColortable
? Forms!frmParent!Child2!ID
1
If you're not familiar with the Immediate window, press Ctrl+g. Then type this in the window and press Enter

I have two forms:
InterviewMaster and InterviewDetail
InterviewDetail opens up as a subform in InterviewMaster and these two forms are linked through a common field called InterviewID
In InterviewDetail I have a textbox called Questiontype as well as combobox called InterviewDropdown.
The data in the dropdown varies based on the data on in the textbox. To make this happen, I have a next button to move to the next question. Whenever I click on next the following runs:
Dim ctlCombo As Control
Set ctlCombo = Forms!InterviewDetail!cmbInterviewDropdown
ctlCombo.Requery
The Row Source setting for my combobox is set to look up the required answers, again this is based on the value as per the textbox:
SELECT [queryAnswerOptions].[Answer] FROM queryAnswerOptions ORDER BY [Answer];
So the options are determined by my query called queryAnswerOptions
So as I cycle through my questions using my next and previous buttons, the dropdown options are updated based on the value of my textbox. This works perfectly when I open the subform from the navigation pane. However, when I open the main form and click on the next button my dropdown does not have any values. I've tried requerying the subform with no luck. I've also tried opening the subform in full screen from my main form but this also does not work. I also don't want to go that route as it does not work well with the overall flow of my form.
Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.
Problem with the query WHERE criteria parameter is when form is installed as a subform, the form reference no longer works because it must use the subform container control name. I always name container control different from the object it holds, such as ctrDetails.
Option is to put SQL statement directly in combobox RowSource instead of basing combobox RowSource on a dynamic parameterized query object - then it will work whether form is standalone or a subform.

I am trying to filter a table with a form and I'm having trouble with the macro.
My form is similar to this one and field1 is first name, field2 is city, and field3 is birth year.
I want to run this query on the subform or something similar so it filters the subform based on the combo box parameters.
My issue is with the control name I can't seem to come up with anything that works.

Did some testing. The Control Name is the name of the subform container control. In this case it will be the container name only, no Forms!Form1 prefix. Recommend you name the container control different from the object it holds, such as ctrDetails. It works if the container holds a table, query, form, or report.
New here - so couldn't comment or vote on answer above. Using the name of the container worked for me! The container is essentially the yellow subform border when you highlight the subform. The container name is found in property sheet > other > name. And it was searchable in the Control Name box when building the macro.

hey i am a total noob and only found ways to pass a value between two forms.
this is the form i am working with: form.
in this form (event.form) there is a subform (Fundort_kurz-Subform) which lists data. when i click one row inside the subform the value for "objid" appears in textbox "text501" by "=[Fundort_kurz-Subform].[Form]![Objid]". I automatically want the value from field "text501" to be passed to field "Objid_3" which is meant to write the value into the table.
Not sure what you are doing, but use the OnCurrent event of the subform:
Me.Parent!Objid_3.Value = Me!text501.Value
And do rename your controls to something meaningful.
I have created a form and set the form's RecordSource to a query. Below is my query:
SELECT GeneralT.*, SalaryT.[Status]
FROM GeneralT INNER JOIN SalaryT ON GeneralT.Deposits = SalaryT.Deposits;
In the form I have 4 textboxes. In the first 3 textboxes I show value from GeneralT table and in fourth textbox I show SalaryT.[Status] value. But this fourth value doesn't show in the textbox rather it show #Name?.
If I open the query in datasheet view I can see all the value properly. I don't understand what is wrong here. Please help me to show the result properly in the form.
Displaying #Name? for a field says that field has a control source that does not match with the query linked to the form. Some things to check:
Make sure Status is a selection from one of the pre-existing options in the Control Source drop down combo box. Click on the combo box to make sure.
Double check to make sure it is a "Text Box" and not a custom
control.
Make sure there isn't another text box named Status
Try chaning the control source to just Status instead of SalaryT.[Status]. If the field name does not conflict with the naming of a field in GeneralT, the selected SalaryT.[Status] will actually be displayed named Status.
My question is twofold.
I have around twenty assorted tables in a database. The table layouts are diverse; the one common thread is that all of them have a 'County' field.
I need to set up a series of reports which allow a user to select a county from a drop-down box, triggering the report to run and return only records attached to that particular county.
This is doable at the datasheet level using a filter-by-form, but that's pretty clunky and I have several tables/queries which will need this same county filter.
I may be halfway there with the following:
Create an unbound form.
Add a combo box.
Set the Row Source of the combo box to include the County field.
Set its Bound column to 1.
Set its Column Count property to 2.
Set the Column Width property to 0";1"
Name the Combo Box 'ChooseCounty'.
Add a Command Button to the form.
Code the button's click event as follows:
(Note: To write the code, in Form Design View select the command button. Display the button's property sheet.
Click on the Event tab.
On the On Click line, write:
[Event Procedure]
Click on the little button with the 3 dots that appears on that line.
When the code window opens, the cursor will be flashing between two already existing lines of code.
Between those lines, write the following code.)
Me.Visible = False
Close the Code window.
Name this form 'ChooseCounty'.
In the Query that is the Report's Record Source [County] field
criteria line, write:
forms!ChooseCounty!ChooseCounty
Next, code the Report's Open event:

I can persuade the report to trigger the form, but only once - I can't seem to figure out where precisely the 'forms!ChooseCounty!ChooseCounty' needs to go. Perhaps someone can clarify or offer a more elegant way to do this?
I need to set up a large meta-report containing sub-reports on all of the tables - and, using the same drop-down 'choose a county' form, I need to have that choice cascade down through all the subreports. I don't have the faintest idea how to go about this. Suggestions welcome!

You seem to be asking two questions, the last of which is clear to me, but the first is not. The second one is in regard to how to cascade the filter to the subforms. You can do this in one of two ways:
put the form control reference as criterion in the recordsource of each subreport, OR
create a non-visible control on the report that has as it's controlsource "=Forms!ChooseCounty!ChooseCounty". Name that control "CountyFilter". Then, add CountyFilter to the link properties. If, for instance, you are linking the subreports on ID, you'd have:
LinkMaster: ID;CountyFilter
LinkChild: ID;County
(assuming, of course, that ID is your link field for the child reports, and that "County" is the name of the field in the child subreport).
Now, I'm wondering why you would have the County data not just in the parent record but in the child records -- that makes no sense. If you do have it, then the solution above will work.
If you don't, then I don't understand the question, as the whole idea behind subreports is that they are filtered by the parent record, so if the parent record is a person, and you filter by COUNTY, you're only going to get the child records in the subreport for that person, which by definition are already filtered by COUNTY because the parent has been filtered.
As to the earlier question, you write:

You have two choices:
hardwire the recordsource of the report to use the form control reference, so the WHERE clause of your report would be "WHERE County=Forms!ChooseCounty!ChooseCounty" (and you should set this as a parameter of type text to insure that it gets processed correctly).
the better meethod is to set the recordsource in the report's OnOpen event.
After you open the form as a dialog, you'd have something like this:
Me.Recordsource = "SELECT * FROM MyTable WHERE County='" _
& Forms!ChooseCounty!ChooseCounty & "'"
And immediately after that line, you can close the form, since it's not needed any longer.
You will likely want an OnNoData event for the case where no records are returned. This is usually something simple like:
MsgBox "No records found!"
DoCmd.Close acReport, Me.Name
