Cocoa binding search field to tableview in a different nib - objective-c

I've got a user interface that looks pretty much like iTunes. For purposes of encapsulation, the top area and the main table view are in separate classes with separate nibs. I want to bind the search field from the top view controller to the tableview in the bottom view controller. I've arranged it so there are properties to store the NSArrayController in both classes. The array controller is an array of dictionaries, and the dictionaries have a "search_keywords" key that I want to use to filter the tableview.
Is it possible to set up the search stuff in Interface Builder even though it's in a separate nib? I can't figure out what to put in the various boxes.
If it's not possible with IB, I assume it's possible in code, since there is a view controller with references to both of the sub-view controllers and I can get at the search field, table view and array controller objects through properties on the two classes.
How do I set it up? IB would be best, if it's possible.

What I did was use the NSSearchField in the top view controller as a dummy/placeholder. I create the "real" search field in the tableview's nib, and wire up all the bindings stuff as per normal. Then in the main view controller I grab the search field out of the tableview's nib, and replace the dummy searchfield with the real one using replaceSubview:with:
Now I can continue to use IB to modify the bindings, and it doesn't really matter what's in what nib as it all gets placed properly in the view hierarchy at runtime.

In your concept you cannot bind the search field in IB in the desired way.
Do it like
1. Create an accessor-method (accessorMethodForTextInSearchField or what name you want to use) in the TopClass for the Text in the searchField
2. Import the TopClass.h in the MainClass
3. In MainClass you can use
NSString *searchString = [ NSString stringWithString:[ TopClass accessorMethodForTextInSearchField] ];
4. Now search for searchString in the array

Can we create an IBOutlet to a View Controller

I have a viewController. That viewController have a containerView that contain another controller. List and map.
I want users to be able to switch between list and map via a button.
So that means the parent view controller (or somebody) need to be able to refer to both the mapViewController and ListViewController.
How can I achieve that?
One way to do so is by using instantiateViewControllerWithIdentifier. However, I do not like identifier. Identifier is prone to mistyping and conflicts. I like Outlet
I read that one possible way to do so is to set a storyboardid. What about if I like the good old outlet?
As I understand it, you have to sub view controllers. What I would do is create a master controller class, which imports all of the other view controllers (think of it as the super class of the entire project) which will then control a empty view, less a button. The background of the empty view will be fed by an "active" view, which will be supplied by either listViewController.h or mapViewController.h This will let the users use both the list/map VC's, and be able to switch between the two.

Get an event from an other view controller

I have two ViewController. The first contains and displays an array with values.
The second is a picker view (modal view controller) that permits to choose a columns to add on the array (with a button "ADD").
But, I don't know how retrieve an event when user click on "ADD" button to refresh my array because IBaction function and the array are not in the same controller.

Protocols can be helpful for such situations.
A protocol is simply a list of method declarations, unattached to a class definition.
Protocols can be helpful in a number of scenarios, a common usage is to define methods that are to be implemented by other classes. A familiar example is when using a tableview, your class implements the cellForRowAtIndexPath method which asks for cell content to insert into a table – the cellForRowAtIndexPath method is defined within the UITableViewDataSource protocol.

You can also pass one local Variable when You press your add button and after that you reload your array in table view.
I think you want same like add contact add field function in simulaor.

I consider that,you have an array in first view controller that you want to access in second view controller on button event (IBAction):
Create Method in secondviewcontroller with array as parameter like this.
-(void)methodname:(nsmutablearray *)array;
Call the above method in first view controller and pass your array in this method when you navigate to second view controller by initializing it.
So, In second view controller you will get an filled array that you can use further.

How to bind nib custom view to a NSVIew subclass

I have a simple requirement.
On Click of a + button, I am trying to add a custom view to a SplitView.
I have created a class MyCustomView which is a subclass of NSView
In the applications nib file, I have a custom view which contains the buttons etc.
Now How to allocate a new MyCustomView every time ?
Is there an example to do this?
I am hoping something like
MyCustomView *v1 = [[MyCustomView alloc] init];
..
..
[splitView addSubView:v1];
[splitView addSubView:v2];
...

It's hard to tell exactly what you're describing based on your description but let's see if I understand you. You want to add a "copy" of your custom view assembly into a split view each time "+" is clicked, right?
The absolute best way to do this is to put the custom view assembly that will be copied (the "prototype") in its own xib. For each object you want to represent, you will instantiate a new copy from the xib and give it to some owner then add it to some parent view (a split view in your case ... odd for an unlimited number of views, but I don't have enough detail to say otherwise).
So. In the modern Cocoa world, such a view assembly should likely have its own view controller (NSViewController). This makes things easier for you since the xib's File's Owner will be an instance of your MyCustomViewController, whose -view is connected to the main container view in the xib (your custom view with all its subviews) and whose -representedObject is set to whatever model object your custom view represents. Your app will then maintain a list (an array or a dictionary, perhaps) of all the view controllers for the model objects. See this SO question/answer for a run-down of how to load from nibs/xibs.
This is basically how an NSCollectionView works (though the views must all be the same size - might not work for you). The collection view corresponds to your split view in this case; NSCollectionViewItem corresponds to your MyCustomViewController (and in fact on 10.5 and above NSCollectionViewItem is a subclass of NSViewController); your custom view is the collection view item's main -view. For each model object in its collection, it instantiates an NSCollectionViewItem and loads the view prototype from a xib (ideally, but this is optional), and uses this to set the item's view, then it sets the item's represented object (the model object).
I hope this clarifies things a bit. You've got some reading to do in order to understand enough of the nuts and bolts, but if you're still stuck, you might try editing your question to clarify or opening a new, more specific question.

Best way to have UITableView within another table?

I have a grouped UITableView in class A and if you select a row in section 0, I want it to open up to another UITableView. In the first view, I have a lot of other methods and buttons and custom designed stuff, so I don't want to create another XIB for the other table view since I'll have to copy over all the methods and custom designed stuff. I was thinking creating another XIB, but subclassing the class under the original class A this way I can use the methods of class A without having to redefine them again in the new class. But I'm having problems with this. Is there a better way? Can I have two table views in one XIB, and just hide one till the other is called up? But that seems a little messy..
If you simply try subclassing the existing viewcontroller it will have the same info for the selected row, hence it would have to grow exponentially in order to make display the right UITableView.
If your concern is redefining methods, then simply create a class that will hold those particular methods and include it in the UITableViewControllers that will be using them, that way you will only define it once. This way you can simply create a new UITableViewController and push it into a navigation controller everytime you select a given cell.
As an alternative of showing all options within one UITableView you can try the following: you can probably try adding a UIScrollView inside the UITableViewCell. I would make it scroll horizontally while keeping the UITableView scroll vertically.

How to access methods/variables from swapped custom view

I've created a window that contains an NSSplitView in which case the right custom view has a view that I swap into at runtime. The custom view swapped in contains a NSTableView with data inside it. I have a search box in the main window of the application that I want to be able to constrain the rows of the table view with.
I have the code to do this and I know it works, but the code I have was tested with a search text box and table view that were on the same window scope. With the text search box now being in the main window and the table view being in a different custom view, I'm not sure how to get the text search box to call the relevant methods from the custom view's controller class, because I don't have direct access to these method anymore.
I'm sure this is a very beginner question, but any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Have your main window controller pass the search query or filter predicate to a property of the content view controller.
You can give the main window controller a weak-referencing (assign) property that holds the current content view controller. Implement a custom setter that not only assigns to the backing instance variable, but also does the swap. That, any time it's time to do a swap, you simply say self.currentContentViewController = viewControllerToSwapIn, and when it's time to change the query/predicate, you pass it to self.currentContentViewController.searchQuery (having implemented the searchQuery property in the MainContentViewController class and made all your actual content-view controllers inherit from that class).
