Issues with SQL Query - sql

as may be quiet aparent, i have very little experience with SQL queries.
I'm having problems with the following Query that i'm generating within my Vb.net application
UPDATE Payments SET B1Code = '12345', ARInvoice = '54321', INV2Go = '00000' WHERE PatientID = '400' AND Product = 'Consultation' AND Catagory = 'Orthotics'
(i have created a test record in the database matching the above information)
Its being constructed with the following code in vb.net:
Dim query As String = "UPDATE Payments SET B1Code = '" & txtB1Code.Text & "', ARInvoice = '" & txtARInvoice.Text & "', INV2Go = '" & txtInv2GoCode.Text & "' WHERE PatientID = '" & Integer.Parse(txtID.Text) & "' AND Product = '" & txtProduct.Text & "' AND Catagory = '" & txtPatientType.Text & "'"
Then being passed the my execute query function like this:
DatabaseFunctions.ExecuteQuery(query)
and the function:
Public Shared Sub ExecuteQuery(ByVal SQL As String)
CheckConnection()
Dim cmd As New OdbcCommand(SQL, con)
cmd.ExecuteNonQuery()
End Sub
The function works perfectly, i've used it time and time again for creating/editing records using simple sql queries built in similar ways as above.. The problem is this particular query returns an error:
ERROR [07002ض] [Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] Too few parameters. Expected 1.
Maybe someone with more sql experience than me can see what i'm missing ?
Thanks

This error indicates, that one of the columsn you use in your query does not exist.
Check your query again: did you mean Catagory OR Category ?

Run Time error 3061 Too Few parameters. Expected 6. Unable to update table from listbox

All,
I am running the below SQL and I keep getting error 3061. Thank you all for the wonderful help! I've been trying to teach myself and I am 10 days in and oh my I am in for a treat!
Private Sub b_Update_Click()
Dim db As DAO.Database
Set db = CurrentDb
strSQL = "UPDATE Main" _
& " SET t_Name = Me.txt_Name, t_Date = Me.txt_Date, t_ContactID = Me.txt_Contact, t_Score = Me.txt_Score, t_Comments = Me.txt_Comments" _
& " WHERE RecordID = Me.lbl_RecordID.Caption"
CurrentDb.Execute strSQL
I am not sure but, you can try somethink like that
if you knom the new value to insert in the database try with a syntax like this one
UPDATE table
SET Users.name = 'NewName',
Users.address = 'MyNewAdresse'
WHERE Users.id_User = 10;
Now, if you want to use a form (php)
You have to use this
if(isset($_REQUEST["id_user" ])) {$id_user = $_REQUEST["id_user" ];}
else {$id_user = "" ;}
if(isset($_REQUEST["name" ])) {$name= $_REQUEST["name" ];}
else {$name = "" ;}
if(isset($_REQUEST["address" ])) {$address= $_REQUEST["adress" ];}
else {$adress= "" ;}
if you use mysql
UPDATE table
SET Users.name = '$name',
Users.address = '$adress'
WHERE Users.id_User = 10;
i don't know VBA but I will try to help you
Going on from my comment, you first need to declare strSQL as a string variable.
Where your error expects 6 values and access doesn't know what they are. This is because form objects need to be outside the quotations of the SQL query, otherwise (as in this case) it will think they are variables and obviously undefined. The 6 expected are the 5 form fields plus 'strSQL'.
Private Sub b_Update_Click()
Dim db As DAO.Database
dim strSQL as string
Set db = CurrentDb
strSQL = "UPDATE Main" & _
" SET t_Name = '" & Me.txt_Name & "'," & _
" t_Date =#" & Me.txt_Date & "#," & _
" t_ContactID =" & Me.txt_Contact & "," & _
" t_Score =" & Me.txt_Score & "," & _
" t_Comments = '" & Me.txt_Comments & "'," & _
" WHERE RecordID = '" & Me.lbl_RecordID.Caption & "';"
CurrentDb.Execute strSQL
end sub
Note how I have used double quotes to put the form fields outside of the query string so access knows they aren't variables.
If your field is a string, it needs encapsulating in single quotes like so 'string'. If you have a date field it needs encapsulating in number signs like so #date# and numbers/integers don't need encapsulating.
Look at the code I have done and you can see I have used these single quotes and number signs to encapsulate certain fields. I guessed based on the names of the fields like ID's as numbers. I may have got some wrong so alter where applicable... Or comment and I will correct my answer.

Receiving an error when attempting to update a record

In my program I have a function titled runSQL, here it is:
Dim Connection As New OleDb.OleDbConnection("Provider=Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0;Data Source=TrainingLog.accdb")
Dim DT As New DataTable
Dim DataAdapter As OleDb.OleDbDataAdapter
Connection.Open()
DataAdapter = New OleDb.OleDbDataAdapter(query, Connection)
DT.Clear()
DataAdapter.Fill(DT)
Connection.Close()
Return DT
And I'm trying to update a record in a database using the update string, sourced from this code:
Dim sqlString As String
sqlString = "UPDATE UserRecords set FirstName = '" & txtName.Text
sqlString = sqlString & "', LastName = '" & txtSurname.Text
If ChkSmoker.Checked = True Then
sqlString = sqlString & "', Smoker = true"
ElseIf ChkSmoker.Checked = False Then
sqlString = sqlString & "', Smoker = false"
End If
sqlString = sqlString & ", Weight = " & txtWeight.Text
If RdoMale.Checked = True Then
sqlString = sqlString & ", Gender = 'm'"
ElseIf RdoFemale.Checked = True Then
sqlString = sqlString & ", Gender = 'f'"
End If
sqlString = sqlString & " WHERE UserName = '" & LstUsers.SelectedItem.ToString & "'"
runSQL(sqlString)
However once I click the save button, I get an error from line 7 of the runSQL function (not including empty line, so that's the DataAdapter.Fill(DT) line) which says "No value given for one or more required parameters."
I wondered if anyone knew why this is or how to fix it.
One thing I did think of is that, in the table being updated, there are fields other than those being mentioned in my UPDATE statement. For example there is a Yes/no field titled "TeamMember", which I don't mention in the update statement.
When using the update function, do I have to give values for every field, even those not being changed?
Thanks for reading, and hopefully helping!
You should never composea SQL query yourself. It much easies and safer (to vaoid SQL injection) to create a parameterized query, or use an stored procedure. And then execute it by pasing the query or stored procedure name and the parameter values.
Besides, in this way, you don't have to take care of what the right format is for a particular value. For example, how do you format a date? And, how do you format a boolean value? Most probably the problem with your query is the false or true value that you're trying to set for the Smoker column, because in TSQL that's a bit value, and can only be 0 or 1.
Check this to see samples of using parameters: ADO.NET Code Examples (Click the VB tab to see it in VB). You'll see that you define a parameter specifying a name with an # prefix in the query, and then you simply pass a value for each parameter in the query, and it will be passed to the server in the correct format without you taking care of it.
Taken from one of the samples:
Dim queryString As String = _
"SELECT ProductID, UnitPrice, ProductName from dbo.Products " _
& "WHERE UnitPrice > #pricePoint " _
& "ORDER BY UnitPrice DESC;"
Dim command As New SqlCommand(queryString, connection)
command.Parameters.AddWithValue("#pricePoint", paramValue)
'' command.ExecuteXXX
NOTE that you can execute the command in different ways, depending on your need to simply execute it or get an scalar value or a full dataset as a result.

Incorrect syntax near 's'. Unclosed quotation mark after the character string

I'm using a query to pull data from an SQL database, at times the last dropdown im using to get the record i'm looking for has a single quote, when it does I get the following error: Incorrect syntax near 's'. Unclosed quotation mark after the character string
This is the code I have:
Using objcommand As New SqlCommand("", G3SqlConnection)
Dim DS01 As String = DDLDS01.SelectedItem.Text
Dim State As String = DDLState.SelectedItem.Text
Dim Council As String = DDLCouncil.SelectedItem.Text
Dim Local As String = DDLLocal.SelectedItem.Text
Dim objParam As SqlParameter
Dim objDataReader As SqlDataReader
Dim strSelect As String = "SELECT * " & _
"FROM ConstitutionsDAT " & _
"WHERE DS01 = '" & DS01 & "' AND STATE = '" & State & "' AND COUNCIL = '" & Council & "' AND LOCAL = '" & Local & "' AND JURISDICTION = '" & DDLJurisdiction.SelectedItem.Text & "' "
strSelect.ToString.Replace("'", "''")
objcommand.CommandType = CommandType.Text
objcommand.CommandText = strSelect
Try
objDataReader = objcommand.ExecuteReader
DDLJurisdiction.Items.Add("")
While objDataReader.Read()
If Not IsDBNull(objDataReader("SUBUNIT")) Then
txtSubUnit.Text = (objDataReader("SUBUNIT"))
End If
If Not IsDBNull(objDataReader("DS02")) Then
lblDS02.Text = (objDataReader("DS02"))
End If
If Not IsDBNull(objDataReader("LEGISLATIVE_DISTRICT")) Then
txtALD.Text = (objDataReader("LEGISLATIVE_DISTRICT"))
End If
If Not IsDBNull(objDataReader("REGION")) Then
txtRegion.Text = (objDataReader("REGION"))
End If
If DDLState.SelectedItem.Text <> "OTHER" Then
If Not IsDBNull(objDataReader("UNIT_CODE")) Then
txtUnitCode.Text = (objDataReader("UNIT_CODE"))
End If
End If
End While
objDataReader.Close()
Catch objError As Exception
OutError.Text = "Error: " & objError.Message & objError.Source
Exit Sub
End Try
End Using
Not all records contain a single quote, only some, so i'd need something that would work if a single quote is present or not.
Thanks.
Your problem is this line here:
strSelect.ToString.Replace("'", "''")
This is changing your WHERE clause from something like
WHERE DS01 = 'asdf' AND ...
To:
WHERE DS01 = ''asdf'' AND ...
You need to do the replace on the individual values in the where clause, not on the whole select statement.
What you should really be doing is using a parameterized query instead.
Update: added same link as aquinas because it's a good link
Use parameterized queries, and only EVER use parameterized queries. See: How do I create a parameterized SQL query? Why Should I?

how to check duplicate record before insert, using vb.net and sql?

can someone help me with my code, i need to check first if record exist. Well i actually passed that one, but when it comes to inserting new record. im getting the error "There is already an open DataReader associated with this Command which must be closed first." can some help me with this? thanks.
Protected Sub Button1_Click(sender As Object, e As EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
Dim reg_con As SqlConnection
Dim reg_cmd, chk_cmd As SqlCommand
Dim checker As SqlDataReader
Dim ID As Integer
Dim fname_, mname_, lname_, gender_, emailadd_, college_, password_ As String
ID = idnumber.Value
fname_ = fname.Value.ToString
mname_ = mname.Value.ToString
lname_ = lname.Value.ToString
gender_ = gender.Value.ToString
college_ = college.Value.ToString
emailadd_ = emailadd.Value.ToString
password_ = reg_password.Value.ToString
reg_con = New SqlConnection("Data Source=JOSH_FLYHEIGHT;Initial Catalog=QceandCceEvaluationSystemDatabase;Integrated Security=True")
reg_con.Open()
chk_cmd = New SqlCommand("SELECT IDnumber FROM UsersInfo WHERE IDnumber = '" & ID & "'", reg_con)
checker = chk_cmd.ExecuteReader(CommandBehavior.CloseConnection)
If checker.HasRows Then
MsgBox("Useralreadyexist")
Else
reg_cmd = New SqlCommand("INSERT INTO UsersInfo([IDnumber], [Fname], [Mname], [Lname], [Gender], [Emailadd], [College], [Password]) VALUES ('" & ID & "', '" & fname_ & "', '" & mname_ & "', '" & lname_ & "', '" & gender_ & "', '" & emailadd_ & "', '" & college_ & "', '" & password_ & "')", reg_con)
reg_cmd.ExecuteNonQuery()
End If
reg_con.Close()
End Sub
Add this string to your connection string
...MultipleActiveResultSets=True;";
Starting from Sql Server version 2005, this string allows an application to maintain multiple active statements on a single connection. Without it, until you close the SqlDataReader you cannot emit another command on the same connection used by the reader.
Apart from that, you insert statement is very dangerous because you use string concatenation. This is a well known code weakness that could result in an easy Sql Injection vulnerability
You should use a parameterized query (both for the insert and for the record check)
reg_cmd = New SqlCommand("INSERT INTO UsersInfo([IDnumber], ......) VALUES (" & _
"#id, ......)", reg_con)
reg_cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("#id", ID)
.... add the other parameters required by the other field to insert.....
reg_cmd.ExecuteNonQuery()
In a parameterized query, you don't attach the user input to your sql command. Instead you put placeholders where the value should be placed (#id), then, before executing the query, you add, one by one, the parameters with the same name of the placeholder and its corresponding value.
You need to close your reader using checker.Close() as soon as you're done using it.
Quick and dirty solution - issue checker.Close() as a first command of both IF and ELSE block.
But (better) you don't need a full blown data reader to check for record existence. Instead you can do something like this:
chk_cmd = New SqlCommand("SELECT TOP (1) 1 FROM UsersInfo WHERE IDnumber = '" & ID & "'", reg_con)
Dim iExist as Integer = chk_cmd.ExecuteScalar()
If iExist = 1 Then
....
This approach uses ExecuteScalar method that returns a single value and doesn't tie the connection.
Side note: Instead of adding parameters like you do now - directly to the SQL String, a much better (and safer) approach is to use parametrized queries. Using this approach can save you a lot of pain in the future.

UPDATE statement failing when attempting to update access database - VB.Net

I am trying to create a simple ticketing software for myself with a VB.Net front end and an Access 2003 back end. I have with allowing new rows to be added, but when I try to code the Update row button, it is giving me the error that says Microsoft JET Database Engine - Syntax error in UPDATE statement. I cannot find what the problem is.
Private Sub btnUpdate_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnUpdate.Click
Dim da As New OleDbDataAdapter
Dim dt As New DataTable
Dim ConnectString As String = ("Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=C:\Documents and Settings\aaron-pister\Desktop\New Role Notes\Issue Tracker Express\Issue Tracker Express\Issue Tracker.mdb")
Dim con As New OleDbConnection(ConnectString)
con.Open()
Dim Green42 As String = "UPDATE Issues Basic Details SET [Company Name] = '" & txtClientName.Text & "', [Status] = '" & cbStatus.Text & "', [Company Contact] = '" & txtClientContact.Text & "', [Description] = '" & txtDesc.Text & "', [Notes] = '" & txtRes.Text & "' WHERE [TicketNum] = '" & txtTicket.Text & "'"
'con.Open()
If txtClientName.Text <> "" Then
Try
'MyCom.CommandText = "UPDATE [Issues Basic Details] SET Company Name = '" & txtClientName.Text & "', Status = '" & cbStatus.Text & "', Company Contact = '" & txtClientContact.Text & "', Description = '" & txtDesc.Text & "', Notes = '" & txtRes.Text & "' WHERE TicketNum = '" & txtTicket.Text & "')"
da = New OleDbDataAdapter(Green42.ToString, ConnectString)
da.Fill(dt)
da.Update(EsInfo1, "Issues Basic Details")
MsgBox("Your record has been updated successfully.", MsgBoxStyle.DefaultButton1, "New Ticket Submitted")
Catch ex As Exception
MsgBox(ex.Source & "-" & ex.Message)
con.Close()
Exit Sub
End Try
Else
MsgBox("You must have an entry in the Client Name, Client Contact and Status fields. It is recommended to also have a value in the Description field.", MsgBoxStyle.OkOnly, "Issue Tracker Express")
btnNewIncident_Click(sender, e)
Exit Sub
End If
End Sub
Your table name has to be bracketed too:
Dim Green42 As String = "UPDATE [Issues Basic Details] SET [Company Name]..."
Also, use parameters instead of putting the values into the string. It avoids SQL Injection.
This:
UPDATE Issues Basic Details SET ...
Is not valid SQL. You need to help it by qualifying your table name:
UPDATE [Issues Basic Details] SET ...
A few other suggestions:
Use prepared statements (parameterize your SQL to avoid SQL injection attacks)
Don't define this type of behavior in a click event handler -- have a helper class to do this work so it can be re-used and isn't coupled directly to the UI.
Use Using statements. Your OleDbConnection class implements IDisposable. You aren't properly disposing this connection.
While it's hard to read your code at the moment, it does look like you are trying to do an "AdHoc" query, which can cause a lot of problems.
I'd recommend first changing your statement to a parameterized query to help diagnose issues too.
