Split multiple strings in excel vba - vba

I have an excel with some data separated by ";" in a cell.
I need to split that cell, and some subsequent one, so that splitted content will go each to a new line each.
Example:
Column f Column j Column k
a;b;c d;e;f g;h;i
Should become
a d g
b e h
c f i
This is what i have, but not working:
Sub tgr()
Dim rindex As Long
Dim saItem() As String
Dim sbItem() As String
Dim scItem() As String
For rindex = Cells(Rows.Count, "F").End(xlUp).Row To 1 Step -1
If InStr(Cells(rindex, "F").Value, ";") > 0 Then
saItem = Split(Cells(rindex, "F").Value, ";")
sbItem = Split(Cells(rindex, "J").Value, ";")
scItem = Split(Cells(rindex, "K").Value, ";")
Rows(rindex + 1 & ":" & rindex + UBound(saItem)).Insert
Cells(rindex, "F").Resize(UBound(saItem) + 1).Value = WorksheetFunction.Transpose(saItem)
Cells(rindex, "J").Resize(UBound(sbItem) + 1).Value = WorksheetFunction.Transpose(sbItem)
Cells(rindex, "K").Resize(UBound(scItem) + 1).Value = WorksheetFunction.Transpose(scItem)
End If
Next rindex
End Sub
Thanks for your help

You are using the wrong array for Col K. I guess you copy pasted and forgot to change it? :)
Replace the line
Cells(rindex, "K").Resize(UBound(sbItem) + 1).Value = WorksheetFunction.Transpose(sbItem)
with
Cells(rindex, "K").Resize(UBound(scItem) + 1).Value = WorksheetFunction.Transpose(scItem)

Macro to Concatenate two columns at a time in a range

I have to create a Macro which lets me Concatenate two columns at a time in a given range. For example: In range C1:Z200, I want to concatenate Column C&D, E&F, G&H and so on. How do I do it. This is my current code which only concatenate first two columns..rest remains the same.
Set Range = ActiveSheet.Range("C1:Z100")
For Each c In Range
c.Select
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = ActiveCell & " " & ActiveCell.Offset(0, 1)
ActiveCell.Offset(0, 1).Activate
Selection.Clear
ActiveCell.Offset(0, 2).Activate
Next c
Try this:
Sub Concat()
Dim i As Long, j As Long
For i = 1 To 100 'number of rows
j = 1 'reset column to 1
Do While j < 25 'max number of columns (until Column Y-Z)
j = j + 2 'start from third column (Column C)
Cells(i, j) = Cells(i, j) & " " & Cells(i, j + 1) 'concat
Cells(i, j + 1).ClearContents 'clear
Loop
Next i 'next row
End Sub
Try this:
Sub ConcatAltCellsInAltCols()
Dim oW As Worksheet: Set oW = ThisWorkbook.Worksheets("Sheet11")
Dim iLC As Long: iLC = oW.Cells(1, oW.Columns.Count).End(xlToLeft).Column
Dim iLR As Long: iLR = oW.Cells(oW.Rows.Count, 3).End(xlUp).Row
Dim iC As Long
Dim iR As Long
For iR = 1 To iLR
For iC = 3 To iLC Step 2
oW.Cells(iR, iC).Value = oW.Cells(iR, iC) & oW.Cells(iR, iC + 1)
Next
Next
End Sub
Try this using a one based array for better Performance:
Code
Option Explicit
Sub Conc()
Dim ws As Worksheet
Set ws = ThisWorkbook.Worksheets("Concat") ' <== change "Concat" to your sheet name to avoid subscript error
Dim v ' variant
Dim lng As Long
Dim j As Integer ' corr.
' use one based array to get field data
v = ws.Range("C1:Z100") ' your OP range
For lng = 1 To UBound(v)
' concatenate columns C&D, E&F, G&H, ...
For j = 0 To 11
v(lng, j * 2 + 1) = v(lng, j * 2 + 1) & v(lng, j * 2 + 2)
Next j
Next lng
' write array values back (overwriting D, F, H,... with the same values)
ws.Range("C1:Z100") = v ' your OP range
End Sub

Replacing characters with unicode characters

I am working with a large data file. B column of the excel sheet contains files names. However during download 2 characters get replaced (ä becomes +ñ and ö becomes +Â.) I need to be able to search with these file names so I need to reverse the names back to original.
Here is what I originally tried:
Private Sub scandit(n As Long)
Dim i As Long
For i = 2 To n
Dim a As String
Dim b As String
Dim c As String
Dim d As String
a = "+" & ChrW(194) ' +
b = ChrW(132) 'ä
c = "+" & ChrW(164) ' +n
d = ChrW(148) 'ö
If Not IsEmpty(Cells(i, 2).Value) Then
Cells(i, 2).Value = Replace(Cells(i, 2).Value, c, b)
Cells(i, 2).Value = Replace(Cells(i, 2).Value, a, d)
End If
Next i
End Sub
However this doesn't work. "+ñ" only gets removed but not replaced. Nothing happens to "+Â".
After some googling I found this:
Sub CommandButton1_Click()
Dim fnd As Range
With ActiveSheet
.Cells.Replace what:="+" & ChrW(194), replacement:=ChrW(132),
lookat:=xlPart
.Cells.Replace what:="+" & ChrW(164), replacement:=ChrW(148),
lookat:=xlPart
End With
End Sub
This has the exact same problem as my own code.
Example on how the replacement should work: sy+Âd+ñ -> syödä
It would be much appreciated if someone had some ideas on how to proceed here (note that I want to do the replacement only for cells in B column.)
I just changed the ChrW values and your code started working
Sub scandit()
Dim i As Long
For i = 2 To 5
Dim a As String
Dim b As String
Dim c As String
Dim d As String
a = "+" & ChrW(194) ' +
b = ChrW(228) 'ä
c = "+" & ChrW(241) ' +n
d = ChrW(246) 'ö
If Not IsEmpty(Cells(i, 2).Value) Then
Cells(i, 2).Value = Replace(Cells(i, 2).Value, c, b)
Cells(i, 2).Value = Replace(Cells(i, 2).Value, a, d)
End If
Next i
End Sub

Find Copy and Paste in VBA macro

I am trying to write a macro which search data from one sheet and copy's to another.
But now I have a problem because I want to copy data between two searches and paste the whole data from multiple cells into one single cell.
For example in the above picture my macro:
SEARCH for "--------------" and "*****END OF RECORD"
COPIES everything in between , here example data in row 29 and 30 and from column A,B,C
PASTE all the data from multiple cells A29,B29,C29 and then A30,B30,C30 to single cell in sheet 2 say cell E2.
This pattern is reoccurring in the column A so I want to search for the next occurrence and do all the steps 1,2,3 and this time I will paste it in Sheet2 , cell E3.
Below is the code:
I am able to search my pattern but hard time in giving references to the cells in between those searched patterns and then copying all the data to ONE cell.
x = 2: y = 2: Z = 7000: m = 0: n = 0
Do
x = x + 1
If ThisWorkbook.Sheets("lic").Range("A" & x) = "---------------------" Then m = x
If ThisWorkbook.Sheets("lic").Range("A" & x) = "****** END OF RECORD" Then n = x
If (n > 0) Then
Do
For i = m To n
ThisWorkbook.Sheets("lic").Range("A" & i + 1).Copy
ThisWorkbook.Sheets("lic").Range("B" & i + 1).Copy
ThisWorkbook.Sheets("lic").Range("C" & i + 1).Copy
'If (n > 0) Then ThisWorkbook.Sheets("Sheet1").Range("E" & y) = ThisWorkbook.Sheets("lic").Range("A" & m + 1, "C" & n - 1): y = y + 1
'If (n > 0) Then ThisWorkbook.Sheets("Sheet1").Range("E" & y).Resize(CopyFrom.Rows.Count).Value = CopyFrom.Value: y = y + 1
Loop While Not x > Z
'Driver's Licence #:Driver's Licence #:Driver's Licence #:
x = 2: y = 2: Z = 7000: counter = 1
Do
x = x + 1
If ThisWorkbook.Sheets("lic").Range("A" & x) = "Driver's Licence #:" Then counter = counter + 1
If (counter = 2) Then ThisWorkbook.Sheets("Sheet1").Range("B" & y) = ThisWorkbook.Sheets("lic").Range("C" & x): y = y + 1: counter = 0
If x = Z Then Exit Sub
Loop
End Sub
Considering that the search is working correctly, about the copy thing you just need to do:
Sheet2.Range("E2").value = ThisWorkbook.Sheets("lic").Range("A" & i + 1).value & ";" & ThisWorkbook.Sheets("lic").Range("B" & i + 1).value & ";" & ThisWorkbook.Sheets("lic").Range("C" & i + 1).value
The result will be something like: AIR COO; L DAT; A
--------UPDATE---------
It was hard to understand your code, so I'm write a new one. Basically it's copy what it found on sheet1 to sheet2.
Sub Copy()
Dim count As Integer 'Counter of loops to the for
Dim Z As Integer 'Limit of (?)
Dim h As Integer 'Count the filled cells on sheet2
Dim y As Integer 'Counter the columns to be copied
Z = 7000
h = 1
'Assuming that the "----" will always be on the top, the code will start searching on the second row
'if it's not true, will be needed to validate this to.
For count = 2 To Z
If Sheet1.Cells(count, 1).Value <> "****** END OF RECORD" Then
If Sheet1.Cells(count, 1).Value <> "" Then
For y = 1 To 3 'In case you need to copy more columns just adjust this for.
Sheet2.Cells(h, 1).Value = Sheet2.Cells(h, 1).Value & Sheet1.Cells(count, y).Value
Next y
h = h + 1
End If
Else
MsgBox "END OF RECORD REACHED"
Exit Sub
End If
Next count
End Sub
Maybe I don't get the full idea but this might work for you.
I'm not at all sure what you want to see in the final output, so this is an educated guess:
Sub DenseCopyPasteFill ()
Dim wsFrom, wsTo As Worksheet
Dim ur As Range
Dim row, newRow As Integer
Dim dataOn As Boolean
Dim currentVal As String
dataOn = False
newRow = 3
Set wsFrom = Sheets("Sheet1")
Set wsTo = Sheets("Sheet2")
Set ur = wsFrom.UsedRange
For row = 1 To ur.Rows.Count
If wsFrom.Cells(row, 1).Value2 = "--------------" Then
dataOn = True
ElseIf wsFrom.Cells(row, 1).Value2 = "***** END OF RECORD" Then
newRow = newRow + 1
dataOn = False
ElseIf dataOn Then
currentVal = wsTo.Cells(newRow, 5).Value2
wsTo.Cells(newRow, 5).Value2 = currentVal & _
wsFrom.Cells(row, 1) & wsFrom.Cells(row, 2) & _
wsFrom.Cells(row, 3)
End If
Next row
End Sub
If you can get away without using the Windows clipboard, I would. Instead of copy/paste, here I demonstrated how you can simply add or append a value.
Add this sub:
Sub copy_range(rng As Range)
Dim str As String
str = rng.Cells(1).Value & rng.Cells(2).Value & rng.Cells(3).Value
Range("E" & Range("E" & Rows.Count).End(xlUp).Row + 1).Value = str
End Sub
Then your for loop should look like this:
For i = m To n
copy_range ThisWorkbook.Sheets("lic").Range("A" & i + 1 & ":C" & i + 1)
Next i

Excel: Split ; separated cell values into columns and then shift in consecutive rows

I'm in the situation described by fig.1 where I have a cell with the reference name and a cell with one or more semicolon separated emails associated to the same reference. I'd like to split the cells contaning more than one email stacking them consecutively and copying the refence name. Is it possible to do this with a VBA Macro in Excel 2007? I know the existence of the "Split in columns" command, but I don't know how to automatically shift the columns in rows and copying the reference name. Thanks in advance.
Here you go:
Sub SplitColumnB()
Dim r As Range
Set r = [B2]
Do While r.Value <> ""
res = Split(r.Value, " ; ")
i = 0
For Each resStr In res
If i > 0 Then r.Offset(1).EntireRow.Insert xlDown
r.Offset(IIf(i > 0, 1, 0)).Value = resStr
r.Offset(IIf(i > 0, 1, 0), -1).Value = Right(resStr, Len(resStr) - InStr(resStr, "#"))
i = i + 1
Next
Set r = r.Offset(IIf(i > 0, i, 1))
Loop
End Sub
Try with the below code. Replace all instances of Sheet1 with the name of your worksheet.
Sub test()
Dim Ref As String
Dim Eid As String
Dim RefR()
Dim EidR()
Rcnt = Sheets("Sheet1").Range("A65000").End(xlUp).Row
K = 0
L = 0
For i = 2 To Rcnt
Ref = Sheets("Sheet1").Range("A" & i).Value
Temp = Split(Sheets("Sheet1").Range("B" & i).Value, ";")
K = K + 1
ReDim Preserve RefR(1 To K)
RefR(K) = Ref
For j = LBound(Temp) To UBound(Temp)
If L <= UBound(Temp) Then
ReDim Preserve EidR(Rcnt, L)
L = UBound(Temp)
End If
EidR(K, j) = Temp(j)
Next j
Next i
RowValue = 2
For i = 1 To UBound(RefR)
For j = 0 To L
Sheets("Sheet1").Range("A" & RowValue).Value = RefR(i)
Sheets("Sheet1").Range("B" & RowValue).Value = Trim(EidR(i, j))
RowValue = RowValue + 1
Next j
Next i
End Sub

Trying to extract data from curly braces but not working

I need to sync up the values in the curly braces {} found in column C and put them against the user id in column F as seen below.
E.g. on the Emails sheet
becomes this on a new sheet
Sub CopyConditional()
Dim wshS As Worksheet
Dim WhichName As String
Set wshS = ActiveWorkbook.Sheets("Emails")
WhichName = "NewSheet"
Const NameCol = "C"
Const FirstRow = 1
Dim LastRow As Long
Dim SrcRow As Long
Dim TrgRow As Long
Dim wshT As Worksheet
Dim cpt As String
Dim user As String
Dim computers() As String
Dim computer As String
On Error Resume Next
Set wshT = Worksheets(WhichName)
If wshT Is Nothing Then
Set wshT = Worksheets.Add(After:=wshS)
wshT.Name = WhichName
End If
On Error GoTo 0
If wshT.Cells(1, NameCol).value = "" Then
TrgRow = 1
Else
TrgRow = wshT.Cells(wshT.Rows.Count, NameCol).End(xlUp).Row + 1
End If
LastRow = wshS.Cells(wshS.Rows.Count, NameCol).End(xlUp).Row
For SrcRow = FirstRow To LastRow
cpt = wshS.Range("C" & SrcRow).value
user = wshS.Range("F" & SrcRow).value
If InStr(cpt, ":") Then
cpt = Mid(cpt, InStr(1, cpt, ":") + 1, Len(cpt))
End If
If InStr(cpt, ";") Then
computers = Split(cpt, ";")
For i = 0 To UBound(computers)
If computers(i) <> "" Then
wshT.Range("A" & TrgRow).value = user
wshT.Range("B" & TrgRow).value = Mid(Left(computers(i), Len(computers(i)) - 1), 2)
TrgRow = TrgRow + 1
End If
Next
Else
computer = cpt
If computer <> "" Then
wshT.Range("A" & TrgRow).value = user
wshT.Range("B" & TrgRow).value = Mid(Left(computer, Len(computer) - 1), 2)
TrgRow = TrgRow + 1
End If
End If
Next SrcRow
End Sub
I managed to resolve it with the above code but there are 3 niggling issues:
1) The first curly brace is always copied, how do I omit this so something like {Computer1 looks like Computer 1
2) Where there are two computers in a row, then the output looks something like this:
when it should really be split into two different rows i.e.
User 1 | Computer 1
User 1 | Computer 2
3) If there is text after the last curly brace with text in it e.g. {Computer1};{Computer2};Request submitted then that text is added as a new row, I don't want this, I want it to be omitted e.g.
should just be:
User 1 | Computer 1
User 1 | Computer 2
How do I go about rectifying these issues?
Try this:
Sub Collapse()
Dim uRng As Range, cel As Range
Dim comps As Variant, comp As Variant, r As Variant, v As Variant
Dim d As Dictionary '~~> Early bind, for Late bind use commented line
'Dim d As Object
Dim a As String
With Sheet1 '~~> Sheet that contains your data
Set uRng = .Range("F1", .Range("F" & .Rows.Count).End(xlUp))
End With
Set d = CreateObject("Scripting.Dictionary")
With d
For Each cel In uRng
a = Replace(cel.Offset(0, -3), "{", "}")
comps = Split(a, "}")
Debug.Print UBound(comps)
For Each comp In comps
If InStr(comp, "Computer") <> 0 _
And Len(Trim(comp)) <= 10 Then '~~> I assumed max Comp# is 99
If Not .Exists(cel) Then
.Add cel, comp
Else
If IsArray(.Item(cel)) Then
r = .Item(cel)
ReDim Preserve r(UBound(r) + 1)
r(UBound(r)) = comp
.Item(cel) = r
Else
r = Array(.Item(cel), comp)
.Item(cel) = r
End If
End If
End If
Next
Next
End With
For Each v In d.Keys
With Sheet2 '~~> sheet you want to write your data to
If IsArray(d.Item(v)) Then
.Range("A" & .Rows.Count).End(xlUp).Offset(1, 0) _
.Resize(UBound(d.Item(v)) + 1) = v
.Range("B" & .Rows.Count).End(xlUp).Offset(1, 0) _
.Resize(UBound(d.Item(v)) + 1) = Application.Transpose(d.Item(v))
Else
.Range("A" & .Rows.Count).End(xlUp).Offset(1, 0) = v
.Range("B" & .Rows.Count).End(xlUp).Offset(1, 0) = d.Item(v)
End If
End With
Next
Set d = Nothing
End Sub
Above code uses Replace and Split Function to pass your string to array.
a = Replace(cel.Offset(0, -3), "{", "}") '~~> standardize delimiter
comps = Split(a, "}") '~~> split using standard delimiter
Then information are passed to dictionary object using User as key and computers as items.
We filter the items passed to dictionary using Instr and Len Function
If InStr(comp, "Computer") <> 0 _
And Len(Trim(comp)) <= 10 Then
As I've commented, I assumed your max computer number is 99.
Else change 10 to whatever length you need to check.
Finally we return the dictionary information to the target worksheet.
Note: You need to add reference to Microsoft Scripting Runtime if you prefer early bind
Result: I tried it on a small sample data patterned on how I see it in you SS.
So assuming you have this data in Sheet1:
Will output data in Sheet2 like this:
I use a custom parse function for this type of operation:
Sub CopyConditional()
' some detail left out
Dim iRow&, Usern$, Computer$, Computers$
For iRow = ' firstrow To lastrow
Usern = Sheets("Emails").Cells(iRow, "F")
Computers = Sheets("Emails").Cells(iRow, "C")
Do
Computer = zParse(Computers) ' gets one computer
If Computer = "" Then Exit Do
' Store Computer and Usern
Loop
Next iRow
End Sub
Function zParse$(Haystack$) ' find all {..}
Static iPosL& '
Dim iPosR&
If iPosL = 0 Then iPosL = 1
iPosL = InStr(iPosL, Haystack, "{") ' Left
If iPosL = 0 Then Exit Function ' no more
iPosR = InStr(iPosL, Haystack, "}") ' Right
If iPosR = 0 Then MsgBox "No matching }": Stop
zParse = Mid$(Haystack, iPosL + 1, iPosR - iPosL - 1)
iPosL = iPosR
End Function
1) Use the Mid function to drop the first character:
str = "{Computer1"
str = Mid(str,2)
now str = "Computer1"
2) You can use the Split function to separate these out and combine with the Mid function above
str = "{Computer1}{Computer2}"
splt = Split(str,"}")
for a = 0 to Ubound(splt)
result = Mid(splt(a),2)
next a
3) Add a conditional statement to the above loop
str = "{Computer1}{Computer2}"
splt = Split(str,"}")
for a = 0 to Ubound(splt)
if Left(splt(a),1) = "{" then result = Mid(splt(a),2)
next a
Use this loop and send each result to the desired cell (in the for-next loop) and you should be good to go.
