I want to run a custom task to compile .less files to .css before packaging the application (.net mvc 3).
I don't have a lot of experience creating MSBUILD scripts so by reading online I came up with code below. It works, but I feel like there should be a way for me to skip the ItemGroup explicit declaration and just instruct the script to look for 'any folder under Skins folder'. Is that possible at all?

MSBuild quite powerful and important tool, but sometimes configuration of it is the same hard as making a spaceship or flying to Mars. Answers on next questions can help makes it a little bit more usefull and developer friendly:

I'm working with a .Net Core solution, that has the dependency on some other solutions DLLs files( that are not referenced directly, but required to be in the solution folder). On post-build event CL there is the option added as an entry point "\TaskEP" that is a starting point of the next pipeline :

I also duplicated the same "Copy" tasks here in .pubxml file , play with different events "AfterBuild", "BeforePublish" but seems that all of the just ignoring. I can see the "Extra" DLLs files in the build output directory and all Info Messages on publishing, but not in the final "Super.WebApplication.zip" file !
The solution I found to copy extra files in .Net Core is taken from this documentation

Does anyone know how to modify a csproj file in a way to generate code files during build without actually referencing the files?
A process like :
create file,
dynamically reference temporary file during build
compiled assembly has additional members, depending on the files created during build
The purpose of this is to create a way of generating code files using roslyn instead of using t4 templates, which are very awkward to use once you're trying to do something depending on attributes.
Hence i am planning on providing a way to use a special csharp file (for full syntax support) to generate files programatically based on the contents of that special file.
I've spent a couple of weeks looking into resources on the internet (with the topic msbuild), but until now it seems i didn't use the right keywords.

My guess is, that the correct build target for my purpose should be "BeforeCompile" in order to somehow populate the build process with custom code files.

Generating the code file can be achieved by msbuild task or msbuild inline task. It is up to you to generate the proper code. One thing that you must care of is creating output item parameter in order to append it to the #(Compile) item. You can use $(IntDir) location to locate your newly generated file, and add them to the #(FileWrites) item group in order for Clean target work properly.
When you finish writing your task, you must use it in your project like this:

I'm a make(1) guy by nature. What I want to do is the equivalent of this make fragment:
FILES = generated.cs
app.exe : $(FILES)

That is, $(FILES) contains a list of files, some of which may be generated by other targets within the Makefile. This Just Works.
I would like to do the ~same thing with MSBuild. Unfortunately, my attempt has failed:

That is, use <Compile/> to include a generated file and have MSBuild deduce that since Generated.cs doesn't exist, it should find some <Target/> which will generate that file and then execute it.
It looks like the only way to do something like this is to add pre-build steps, but that seems like a hack. Are pre-build steps the only way to do this? Or is there some way to make MSBuild act like it has a brain?
Update 1: For reference, this would be the pre-build incantation needed to make it work, and (again) this is something I'd rather avoid if possible:

This would need to occur after the <Import Project="..." /> element(s) defining <CompileDependsOn/>.
The problem is that your file is a generated one and MsBuild parses the item and property group only once (at the beginning of your build). Thus, when MsBuild tries to include the generated.cs file, it is not created yet and MsBuild does include nothing at all.
A correct way of doing it would be to do the include part inside the BuildGenerated target which would cause it to be dynamically evaluated.

Sorry, I did not read correctly your question. in your makefile, in the app.exe target (the default one) you explicitely call your generated.cs target. You can do the same with MsBuild.
By default, MsBuild search for the Build target (the 'all' in makefile), if your main target is "app.exe" you have to call BuildGenerated target within with one of the following option :

I'd like to create a MSBuild project that reflects the project dependencies in a solution and wraps the VS projects inside reusable targets.
The problem I like solve doing this is to svn-export, build and deploy a specific assembly (and its dependencies) in an BizTalk application.
My question is: How can I make the targets for svn-exporting, building and deploying reusable and also reuse the wrapped projects when they are built for different dependencies?
I know it would be simpler to just build the solution and deploy only the assemblies needed but I'd like to reuse the targets as much as possible.

Wow, this is a loaded question for a forum post. I wrote about 20 pages on creating reusable .targets files in my book, but I'll get you started here with the basics here. I believe that the key to creating reusable build scripts (i.e. .targets files) is three elements:
Place behavior (i.e. targets) into separate files
Place data (i.e. properties and items, these are called .proj files) into their own files
Extensibility
.targets files should validate assumptions
The idea is that you want to place all of your targets into separate files and then these files will be imported by the files which will be driving the build process. These are the files which contain the data. Since you import the .targets files you get all the targets as if they had been defined inline. There will be a silent contract between the .proj and .targets files. This contract is defined in properties and items which both use. This is what needs to be validated.
The idea here is not new. This pattern is followed by .csproj (and other projects generated by Visual Studio). If you take a look your .csproj file you will not find a single target, just properties and items. Then towards the bottom of the file it imports Microsoft.csharp.targets (may differ depending on project type). This project file (along with others that it imports) contains all the targets which actually perform the build.

The important parts to notice are the extensibility points. Even though this is a very basic file, it has all the components of a reusable .targets file. You can customize it's behavior by passing in different properties and items to build. You can extend it's behavior by overriding a target (BeforeBuild, AfterBuild or even CoreBuild) and you can inject your own targets into the build with:

In your case I would create an SvnExport.targets file which uses the required properties:
SvnExportRoot
SvnUrl
SvnWorkingDirectory
You will use these properties to do the Export.
Then create another one for Biztalk build and deploy. You could split this up into 2 if necessary.
Then inside of your .proj file you just import both and setup the targets to build in the right order, and your off.
This is only really the beginning of creating reusable build elements, but this should get the wheels turning in your head. I am going to post all of this to my blog as well as download links for all files.

After MSbuild has built my solution (with an asp.net website), and the webdeployment project has built and put the website in the directory _PublishedWebsites:
c:\mybuilds\buildName\Daily_20090519.3\Release_PublishedWebsites\MyWebsite.
How do I copy this to the fixed directory where IIS points to for the test website?
I have found loads of code snippets, but I cannot seem to find one that will take into account the fact that this directory name changes.
