I have been trying for the past few days to invoke an exe file by using msmq trigger. Its never being called. These are the steps I followed.
Created a trigger mentioning the queue path with peeking checked. Enabled Checked
Created a rule with no conditions so that the trigger will fire whenever a new message is obtained. And selected the radio button mentioning Standalone Executable. Provided the field with the correct location. Checked the location with RUN and confirmed that the exe is working.
But when a new message is being sent to the queue the exe is not being called.
Are you sure the "Microsoft Trigger service" is online?
I had a similar problem and restarting both the system and the Service helped!

I have a WCF application which consists in some async communications with ecternal services. When we start a new expedient, a new instance is created; it process data and send an xml to a external service and waits for the response. This response requires that a person review the xml and send the response so it usually it is delayed for a long time. For this reason, the workflow go to idle and we use persistence with AppFabric.
The fact is that sometime, when we receive the response, the next exception is raised:
The execution of the InstancePersistenceCommand named {urn:schemas-microsoft-com:System.Activities.Persistence/command}LoadWorkflowByInstanceKey was interrupted by an error.
Normally this error does not occur, it can occur very sporadically. However, we are trying to update the app to include a new functionality (it does not modify the workflow) but when the application is deployed to the server, the instances that were created with the old deployment and were waiting for the response, throw this exception when they receive the response from the external service. However, the instances initiated with the new deployment process the response without problem.
I have been looking for information about this problem but I haven't found much. Anybody can help me?

Thanks a lot for your answer, it may be helpful for me in the future. In this case, the problem was that I was updating an assembly version of one of the implicated project (to upload a nuget package) and for a reason that I don’t understand, the instances created with an old version raised this exception when the service with the new version had to manipulate the mentioned instances.
If I change the assembly version to upload the nuget and then set the original version and deploy with this version, everything works ok. Anybody knows what is the reason?

This may be because there is a program running in the background and trying to extend the lock on the instance store every 30 seconds, and it seems that whenever the connection to the SQL service fails, it marks the instance store as invalid.
You can try <workflowIdle timeToUnload="0"/>, if it doesn't work you can look at the methods provided by other links.

I have a windows service programmed in vb.NET, using Topshelf as Service Host.
Once in a while the service doesn't start. On the event log, the SCM writes errors 7000 and 7009 (service did not respond in a timely fashion). I know this is a common issue, but I (think) I have tried everything with no result.
The service only relies in WMI, and has no time-consuming operations.
I read this question (Error 1053: the service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion), but none of the answers worked for me.
I Tried:
Set topshelf's start timeout.
Request additional time in the first line of "OnStart" method.
Set a periodic timer wich request additional time to the SCM.
Remove TopShelf and make the service with the Visual Studio Service Template.
Move the initialization code and "OnStart" code to a new thread to return inmediately.
Build in RELEASE mode.
Set GeneratePublisherEvidence = false in the app.config file (per application).
Unchecked "Check for publisher’s certificate revocation" in the internet settings (per machine).
Deleted all Alternate Streams (in case some dll was marked as web and blocked).
Removed any "Debug code"
Increased Window's general service timeout to 120000ms.
Also:
The service doesn't try to communicate with the user's desktop in any way.
The UAC is disabled.
The Service Runs on LOCAL SYSTEM ACCOUNT.
I believe that the code of the service itself is not the problem because:
It has been on production for over two years.
Usually the service starts fine.
There is no exception logged in the Event Log.
The "On Error" options for the service dosn't get called (since the service doesn't actually fails, just doesn't respond to the SCM)
I've commented out almost everything on it, pursuing this error! ;-)
Any help is welcome since i'm completely out of ideas, and i've been strugling with this for over 15 days...
For me the 7009 error was produced by my NET core app because I was using this construct:

and appsettings.json file obviously couldn't be found in C:\WINDOWS\system32.. anyway, changing it to Path.Combine(AppContext.BaseDirectory, "appsettings.json") solved the issue.
More general help - for Topshelf you can add custom exception handling where I finally found some meaningfull error info, unlike event viewer:

I've hit the 7000 and 7009 issue, which fails straight away (even though the error message says A timeout was reached (30000 milliseconds)) because of misconfiguration between TopShelf and what the service gets installed as.
The bottom line - what you pass in HostConfigurator.SetServiceName(name) needs to match exactly the SERVICE_NAME of the Windows service which gets installed.
If they don't match it'll fail straight away and you get the two event log messages.
I had this start happening to a service after Windows Creator's Edition update installed. Basically it made the whole computer slower, which is what I think triggered the problem. Even one of the Windows services had a timeout issue.
What I learned online is that the constructor for the service needs to be fast, but OnStart has more leeway with the SCM. My service had a C# wrapper and it included an InitializeComponent() that was called in the constructor. I moved that call to OnStart and the problem went away.
a couple of questions:
1.When I open an app in the emuhost commandline, I can open, close, install, uninstall it, but I can't interact with it (tap on something etc.), it says:

Even the ping says Active: False. Any ideas?
2.The doFlick command is commented out due to something with Nokia Music. Why is it so? Is it safe to uncomment the code now?
3.It says in the docs that you can add multiple targets. But in VS, the target device is a dropdown menu, and I've looked in the csproj file, and there is no device field in there. How do you add multiple emulators/devices?

As seen on another site, the problem indeed lies in the hostname ending with .net ("bla.bla.net:8085"). I've worked around it by entering the hosts IP address directly in this file, line 81.
If anybody knows why it is bad for the hostname to end in .net, that would be marvelous.
I have writen a workflow service but when I run it in the WCF test client I just get a message ONE WAY MESSAGE has been sucessfully sent to the service side.
I tried to put some breakpoints in the XAMLX service but it didn't help. No breakpoint was hit. I tried to put a breakpoint in the actions I defined, but that was also not hit. What am I mistaking here?
Should I expect the debugger to work? Why does it say a ONE WAY OPPERTION?
A WorkflowService generates a one way contract if you have a Receive activity with no correlated SendReply activity.
You can debug a WorkflowService with a one way message - I tested it just now to be sure and it worked for me. If the debugger is not working for you then
Look for a message in the Debug output window like
Instrumentation for debugger fails.
Reason: Could not find file 'c:\DeclarativeServiceLibrary2\Service1.xamlx'.
If you see this it is because the path to the XAMLX file inside the file itself is incorrect. For example see this XAML

You can manually edit the path or if you open the workflow in the designer and make any change and save it, the path will be updated.
I'm using Visual Studio 2008 and have a WCF client working against a WCF service. They are both located in the same Visual Studio solution. After I've made a change in my WCF contract, I want to update the service reference on the client so that changes made to the contract is also made in the proxy.
My problem is that the proxy code is not re-generated.
When I select to update the service reference, the following happens:
A dialog with the title "Updating service reference 'name-of-reference'" is shown. This dialog has a progress bar.
The progressbar moves and the status text in the dialog is changed to "Updating configuration"
The progressbar moves a bit more, and the status text is chnaged to "Configuration update complete"
The dialog doesn't show the text "Generating \something\" (can't remember the exact wording) which I would expedct.
If I delete the service reference and add it again, the proxy is properly generated. I add the service using the exact same settings as before, so I don't think it's a issue I can solve by changing the service reference configuration on the client.
One thing I suspect may be the problem is that I've renamed the default wsHttpBindings in app.config. I've also renamed the default endpoints. The reason behind this is that I need more than one endpoint and having one named 'some-default-name' and one with my own name is just confusing.
The problem with deleting the service and adding it again is that Visual Studio adds a new binding in app.config (among other things) which should not be there.
Anyone seen this problem before? Anyone knows of a solution to it?
When we have had this problem it has usually been one of these errors:
The size of the contract has increased, and is now so large that the WCF configuration does not allow it to be transferred.
A new class has been added to a WCF Interface and that class is not marked as serializable.
There is a compile error that stops the code from building and it therefore uses the old dll
I've run into this problem with the following conditions:
Our workstations are connected to an Active Directory domain (nearly everything uses Windows Authentication)
The service reference I'm trying to update is hosted on localhost, and is running under IIS Express (so the Application Pool user is running as the developer's personal domain user account)
Another developer has added or updated the reference to the project more recently than me.
The only way I have figured out how to workaround this issue is to edit the configuration.svcinfo file for that service reference (you will need to show all files for the project to see it in visual studio), locate the following section:
userPrincipalName value="user#domain.com"
and change the user to my own domain user. After saving the file, I have no trouble updating the reference until another developer updates the service reference (likely using the same workaround). Unfortunately, I haven't been able to figure out a permanent solution to this issue.
My error was that I forgot to add the OperationContract attribute.
In my case the problem was that the previous developer had added the service reference using his machine name rather than localhost. So when I told Visual Studio to update, it connected to his machine, which did not have the changes. I modified the service reference files and replaced his machine name with localhost and it was able to update the reference.
I had this problem too. Deleted the service reference and recreated it again.
My problem was that I had two methods with the same name. Everything builded fine, but I couldn't update service reference. When I tried to start just the WCF service, the error pops up.
Two easy steps to solve that:
Run Service, then stop it.
Update service reference.
Highlight the service as the active project, F5 to run it in VisualStudio, it will start up in the service test app. Stop debugging. Then try to update your service reference - worked for me.
I know this solution is a bit late, but after trying the posted solutions with no success, this worked:
When you create a WebService, it generates a .dll file that you reference as your service reference. This .dll is (as most know) not recreated everytime you make changes to the .SVC file. You can see this if you go and view the date modified property of the web service .dll file, in my case it was three hours old!
My solution was to make appropriate changes to the service contact, save it, and re-build the project which will cause it to recreate all the .dll's reflecting the changes you made to the service contact file (.svc).
After this, update the service reference on the client app, and the changes are evident.

I had the same problem. Modified some of the data contracts. Tried to "Update Service Reference" and did not see the change. Dropped and re-added the service. Still didn't see the change when writing code in the client. Opened my client with Reflector and saw the service types had the change! So why was intellisense still showing old properties? Restarted Visual Studio and the modifications finally showed in intellisense.
I had the same problem, this by me it was caused by GIT Merge Conflict, i was missing the following code from my csproj file

Another solution to these kinds of problems is if your namespaces get jumbled in referenced projects that both consume the service. So:
ProjectA - Consumes ServiceA
ProjectB - Consumes ServiceA, Has Reference to ProjectA
If you change ServiceA and update ProjectB, sometimes the namespaces can can change to look at ProjectA's version of the service.
