I'm developing a web application externally from sharepoint online 2010. As part of the application I would like to allow users to access documents from a document library. Ideally users would click on an option, this would query the library for documents, and return a JSON object for each object satisfying the query for display as links in a webpage.
I've been looking for a way to do this in a website hosted externally from sharepoint 2010, but I have been unable to find resources describing how to load the ECMA script API and connect to a sharepoint site. Does anyone know where I can find this information?
Thank you for your help!
You have several ways to achieve this. The out of the box option would be using queries (from server code or ajax) your list SVC. In case you don't know, all lists have an associated service to pull information.

http://www.dotnetmafia.com/blogs/dotnettipoftheday/archive/2010/01/21/introduction-to-querying-lists-with-rest-and-listdata-svc-in-sharepoint-2010.aspx
There is a wonderful js library at codeplex, spservices, that helps you to query your sharepoint. With this list you could do something like this (sample code taken from codeplex samples)
<script language="javascript" type="text/javascript">
$(document).ready(function() {
$().SPServices({
operation: "GetListItems",
async: false,
listName: "Announcements",
CAMLViewFields: "<ViewFields><FieldRef Name='Title' /></ViewFields>",
completefunc: function (xData, Status) {
$(xData.responseXML).SPFilterNode("z:row").each(function() {
var liHtml = "<li>" + $(this).attr("ows_Title") + "</li>";
$("#tasksUL").append(liHtml);
});
}
});
});
</script>
More information at http://spservices.codeplex.com/wikipage?title=GetListItems? Keep in mind if the list has security restrictions you will run into pretty "interesting" authetication issues as you are running this calls outside sharepoint and it will not know who the hell is making the calls. So, just as a suggestion, consider running your pages under sharepoint.

I'm trying to create a Sharepoint iOS app and using the rest api I get the error "Likes are not supported in this item." after doing a POST to https://tenant.sharepoint.com/News/_api/web/lists/getbytitle('pages')/items('1234')/like.
Anyone knows more about this kind of error?
The Rating settings seems to be set correctly on the Sharepoint server, because the like option works correctly on the website, and also in the app I can see the likesCount properties on the response for the Rest API call https://tenant.sharepoint.com/News/_api/web/lists/getbytitle('pages')/items('1234').
I don't think there is something wrong with the client app implementation, but it is something related to the Sharepoint configuration, although I haven't seen any more settings in regards to the Rating settings including the Sharepoint access for the mobile app.
The web seems to handle this using the Microsoft.Office.Server.ReputationModel.Reputation.setLike function which again works correctly on the web parts, but I couldn't find a way to do it from the mobile app.
To set Likes for the list item, we need use the API below with POST request.
https://tenant.sharepoint.com/News/_api/web/lists/getbytitle('pages')/items('1234')
And pass the data of the POST request as below.
var item = {
"__metadata": { "type": "SP.Data.PagesItem"},
"LikedByStringId": {"results": ["11"]},
"LikesCount": 2
};
Before set Likes for the item, we need get the "LikedByStringId" and "LikesCount" value of the list item using API below with GET request, then set the new one.

I am going to create some declarative items in SPO using VS. I know how to create it through UI by I want to create programmatically. As I did some research, there are 3 ways.
First is through SP hosted App(add-in) then give manage permission on host web to create some list on its parent site.
Here is the article:http://www.sharepointnadeem.com/2013/12/sharepoint-2013-apps-access-data-in.html
This approach is not good because App web shouldn't apply any change on its host web.
Second is through Sandbox solution. Once I try to create a sandbox solution using SPO site URL, I will receive an error which said connecting to a remote site is not possible through VS. So I have to enter a local SP URL to create a sandbox solution. then I should create list template declaratively and deploy it and publish it to my SPO environment. Here is the article which explain steps:http://www.dotnetmafia.com/blogs/dotnettipoftheday/archive/2012/01/10/how-to-use-visual-studio-11-to-publish-solutions-to-sharepoint-online.aspx
The problem that I have with this approach is I don't have access to my managed metadata columns which are located in SPO once I am developing list template in my local development machine.
Third approach is creating List or content type or template in App web which is not my case. This has been explained in this article:
sharepoint-journey.com/sharepoint-list-in-sharepoint-hosted-app.html
The problem here is, I want to have that template in my site (host site) not in App web site (sub site)
My question is: I want to provide some list template in my SPO environment by using VS 2013. what is the best approach for doing that? and how can I do that? Please give me an step by step instruction.
Thank you
You definetly want to go the App(Add-in) way. It is possible and in many cases prefereble to set up your lists on the host web and then just use the app web for a user interface, or if you don't want to utilize it at all: Just let the add-in do the heavy lifting in creating lists, columns and content types.
The important thing here is that you specify in your code that you want the lists to be created on the Host Web and not the App Web. For this to work you need to include a permission request in your app. When installed, the app will ask the user installing it if it can have permission to the host web. This is done by setting the relevant scope in your AppManifest.xml file, and then you set it under Permission: [your scope] - [permission level] You can read more about this at this resource: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/office/fp142383.aspx
Then something like this code will allow you to create a list on your hostweb. Keep in mind that this list will still be available on the host web even if you remove your app.
oApp.install.addList = function (listName) {
var listCreationInfo = new SP.ListCreationInformation();
listCreationInfo.set_title(listName);
listCreationInfo.set_templateType(SP.ListTemplateType.genericList);
var myNewList = hostcontext.get_web().get_lists().add(listCreationInfo);
var dfd = $.Deferred();
context.load(myNewList);
context.executeQueryAsync(function () {
var listCreated = true;
console.log("[" + listName + "]" + " added to hostweb");
if (listCreated) dfd.resolve();
}, oApp.onFail
);
return dfd.promise();
};
I also wrote about creating certain types of columns on your list at my blog. Feel free to check that out here: http://bayerlein.se/how-to-create-host-web-lists-with-certain-columns-in-your-sharepoint-add-in-the-nice-way/
Can you advise??
I am trying to programmatically insert file permissions in OneDrive , OneDrive for business, SharePoint Online, not unlike how you can do it on Google Drive.
ie: https://developers.google.com/drive/v2/reference/permissions/insert
I cannot locate a OneDrive API scope/method to use to insert file permissions? (in effect to programmatically share a file). Does anyone happen to know if this is possible, and if so which scope/method to use? I assume its something such as SetPermission?
I am aware that you can get a link via the 'wl.skydrive' scope within OneDrive API although it is unclear as to whether there are any permissions added ?
Thank you in advance
James
The closest analog is shared edit and shared read links:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn631815.aspx#get_links_to_files_and_folders
If you are building a SharePoint app, you might want to try using the SPRoleAssignment class, which might also work for OneDrive for Business:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/office/microsoft.sharepoint.sproleassignment(v=office.15).aspx
Basically, you create a group, add permissions level, and then assign that to an item.
You can also use the UpdateDocumentSharingInfo method (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/office/microsoft.sharepoint.client.sharing.documentsharingmanager.updatedocumentsharinginfo(v=office.15).aspx) from the DocumentSharingManager class to share internal files in OneDrive for Business.
Here’s how to make the call:
DocumentSharingManager.UpdateDocumentSharingInfo(
_ctx,
_resourceURL,
new List() { _newRoleAssignment },
validateExistingPermissions: true,
additiveMode: true,
sendServerManagedNotification: false,
customMessage: null,
includeAnonymousLinksInNotification: false);
_ctx.ExecuteQuery();
I am looking for a way to utilize the FireShot API with JS to given a URL (or perhaps a list) use the FireShot API to take screenshot, upload to Imgur, then return the user the URLs or perhaps something like markdown to use quickly in forums.
Method 1: Open new window
I tried opening the URL in a new window, but found that I cant control that page with JS dues to cross domain problems. The same with iFrames.
Method 2: simple $.get()
A simple $.get() wont work because of the same cross domain issues I guess?
http://jsfiddle.net/t6aeq/
$.get($url.val(), function(data) {
console.log(data);
});
Via PHP "Proxy"
So I tried creating a simple PHP script that gets the HTML of the URL and returns it to my JS (using file_get_contents($url)). But some sites like Microsoft will detect that I am using some automated methods and give an error page of sorts. I also cant seem to find a way to use jQuery to query that returned HTML for link[rel=stylesheet], script, style and body to append to the head and a div respectively. I posted abt that on another question
A new Idea: Embed scripts on browser level
So I thought away of getting around these is using iMacros or GreeseMonkey or something to insert scripts into pages on the browser level instead? But any guidance or tips on how can I do that? Also, I'd prefer a pure JS/PHP method if available so users are not limited to using Browser plugin/scripts (tho I will be the only user for now)
It suddenly came to my mind that this may not work because the FireShot API key and Imgur is limited to the domain? Any solutions?
You might be able to inject the FireShot script using Greasemonkey. But, first use GM_xmlhttpRequest() to fetch an API key, for that page's domain, from the "Create FireShot API Key" page.
Note that GM_xmlhttpRequest() does not have the same cross-domain issues that $.get() has.
However, at this point you might be better off just writing your own Firefox add-on. Maybe start with FireShot's code for ideas. Also see the Screengrab add-on.
I want to be able to retrieve dynamic data from a web page (share prices). I started out by retrieving the html code before I realised that as it is live data, the html code will be of little use. Although I am looking to capture specific data, all i wish to do is process a webpage that I specify which will return the text off that website and not the HTML code. Basically a copy and paste of the entire page would be great..
Any ideas would be really appreciated!
'Screen Scraping' by parsing HTML is so early 2000s...what I would do is read up on Amazon's Mechnical Turk. You can develop a queued architecture where you submit urls to this Mechnical Turk service. The service would automatically distribute these bits of work to users who would then do the dirty task of copying and pasting out the valuable stock quote information you require. Users around the world would anxiously await delivery of the next URL to their Mechanical Turk inbox...pinning for the opportunity to copy/paste out another share price for your application. Sure, it might take a few minutes to update your prices, but hey, they would be HAND parsed by REAL people around the globe! Just think of the possibilities!
Well, the HTML contains the text of the website, so you "just" need to parse the HTML.
EDIT: If the data is not in the HTML but loaded dynamically, the situation is different. As I can see, you have two options:
Find out how the data is loaded (i.e. read the JavaScript on the page). If it is updated via some web service, you could query the same web service in your program.
Use a web browser to get the data and then get the dynamic HTML tree of the page. Maybe the WPF Webbrowser control can help you with this, but I'm not sure since I've never done this myself.
Is it possible to find this same data provided in a ready-to-consume format rather than scraping HTML for it? It seems like there's probably public web-services for stock quotes.
For example: A quick search for "Stock price webservice" turned up http://www.webservicex.net/stockquote.asmx; an ASMX web-service that is easy to consume in .NET.
In your Visual Studio project you should be add a reference to this service via the "Add Web Reference" command; the dialog you're given varies depending on whether your project is targeting for .NET 2.0 or .NET 3.0/3.5.
I added a reference to the service named StockPriceProxy:
Public Function GetQuote(ByVal symbol As String) As String
Using quoteService As New StockPriceProxy.StockQuote
return quoteService.GetQuote(symbol)
End Using
End Function
