I have 2 fields in my DB2 database: DATE and TIME. DATE is string (8/25/2013), DATE is timestamp (1/1/1970 7:00:00 AM). I want to write a sql to replace 1/1/1970 with 8/25/2103. Please help.

Well, you need to cast your string to a date, using the DATE function
DATE(DATE)
Where you see that's it's a bad idea to name your columns with existing function names...
Then combining the TIMESTAMP, DATE, and TIME function (again really unclear with your field names, but...)
TIMESTAMP(DATE(DATE), TIME(TIME))
Will give you a timestamp where the date part is coming from the DATE field, and the time part from the TIME field

After casting to a DATE format, adding the difference between those two absolute dates should work -
UPDATE <table-name>
SET DATE= DATEADD(day,DATEDIFF(day,'1/1/1970','8/25/2013'),DATE)
WHERE DATE < '1/2/1970' AND DATE>='1/1/1970'

Also, it is recommended to not use 'DATE' as a column name as it is a reserved [edit] function name.

In Standard SQL, the WHERE clause would look like:
WHERE DAT_0 >= DATE '1995-01-01'
Many databases would simply accept this without the DATE as well:
WHERE DAT_0 >= '1995-01-01'
In your comment DATE_0 is a date column
Therefore we can change it to any format as below using to_char then to_date
to_date(to_char(DATE_0,'yyyymmdd'),'yyyy-mm-dd')
When comparing you can try this, converting the date to_number, i find it very easy
to_number(to_char(DATE_0,'yyyymmdd')) > 19950101
if datatype of "DAT_0" is date or datetime or timestamp , they are recorded as a specific format specified by default datetime setting in your database engine , therefore you can't have multiple format inside the column , so there is no concern there
I am not getting data between two years, below is between condition
to_char(Wfc.APPLYDTM,'MM/DD/YYYY') between '12/11/2019' and '01/10/2020'
but I am getting data between '12/11/2019' and '12/31/2019' & '01/11/2020' and '01/01/2020' for these dates but not between two different years.

Try using TO_DATE instead of TO_CHAR, and then compare against valid Oracle date literals:
SELECT *
FROM Wfc
WHERE TO_DATE(APPLYDTM, 'MM/DD/YYYY') BETWEEN date '2019-12-11' AND date '2019-01-10';
Note that if APPLYDTM already be a date, then you don't need to call TO_DATE on it. It doesn't make sense to convert your data to character, if you intend to work with it as a date.
You should convert your data to Date to be able to compare correctly.
The main idea is you should compare date value instead of string value.
to_date(Wfc.APPLYDTM,'MM/dd/yyyy') between to_date('12/11/2019','MM/dd/yyyy') and to_date('01/10/2020','MM/dd/yyyy')

Do not convert date/time values to strings! Use the built in functionality.
Your logic is most simply expressed as:
Wfc.APPLYDTMbetween >= DATE '2019-12-11' AND
Wfc.APPLYDTMbetween < DATE '2020-01-11'
Note that the date constants are provided using the DATE keyword. This supposed ISO 8601 standard date formats (happily!).
Also note the use of >= and < rather than BETWEEN. The date data type in Oracle can include a time component -- even if you don't see it when you query the table. This ensures that all date/times are included in the range.
As an added benefit, this can use an index on (APPLYDTMbetween). Using a function usually precludes using an index, unless you have defined a function-based index.
My table in hive has a filed of date in the format of '2016/06/01'. but i find that it is not in harmory with the format of '2016-06-01'.
They can not compare for instance.
Both of them are string .
So I want to know how to make them in harmory and can compare them. Or on the other hand, how to change the '2016/06/01' to '2016-06-01' so that them can compare.

To convert date string from one format to another you have to use two date function of hive
unix_timestamp(string date, string pattern) convert time string
with given pattern to unix time stamp (in seconds), return 0 if
fail.
from_unixtime(bigint unixtime[, string format]) converts the
number of seconds from unix epoch (1970-01-01 00:00:00 UTC) to a
string representing the timestamp of that moment in the current
system time zone.
Using above two function you can achieve your desired result.

The final query is
select from_unixtime(unix_timestamp('2016/06/01','yyyy/MM/dd'),'yyyy-MM-dd') from table1;
where table1 is the table name present in my hive database.

Let's say you have a column 'birth_day' in your table which is in your format,
you should use the following query to convert birth_day into the required format.
date_Format(birth_day, 'yyyy-MM-dd')
You can use it in a query in the following way
select * from yourtable
where
date_Format(birth_day, 'yyyy-MM-dd') = '2019-04-16';
Use :
unix_timestamp(DATE_COLUMN, string pattern)
The above command would help convert the date to unix timestamp format which you may format as you want using the Simple Date Function.

here is my solution (for string to real Date type):
select to_date(replace('2000/01/01', '/', '-')) as dt ;
ps:to_date() returns Date type, this feature needs Hive 2.1+; before 2.1, it returns String.
ps2: hive to_date() function or date_format() function , or even cast() function, cannot regonise the 'yyyy/MM/dd' or 'yyyymmdd' format, which I think is so sad, and make me a little crazy.
When I write below query it gives record .

In this query if I don't add 0 in '4/05/2015' it returns record.
But when I add 0 to the date i.e. '04/05/2015' it doesn't give any records.

The reason it's not working because SQL is trying to do a string comparison because both your types are string types, But what you really want to do a date comparison.
You should do something like this. Since you only need date part you can strip off the time and use style 103 for your format dd/mm/yyyy.
WHERE CONVERT(DATETIME,LEFT(order_date,10),103)
BETWEEN CONVERT(DATETIME,'20150422') AND CONVERT(DATETIME,'20150504')
Alternately you can use this as well if your order_date has dates like this 5/4/2015 03:20:24PM

A long term solution is to change your column order_date to DATE/DATETIME

I have a column in my table with Dates in the format yyyy-mm-dd I want to convert all the dates in that column to the format mm/dd/yyyy

The DateIn column is defined as Date in my table (DateIn DATE NULL)
The query does no change to the data. am I doing some thing wrong here?
You can change the default format in which SQL Server displays a date, but you can't alter the way a DATE value is stored via CONVERT(). You can format a date however you want if you store it as a string, but you lose functionality when you do that and it's not advisable. If you are hell-bent on storing a formatted version, you might want to create a new VARCHAR() field so you can preserve your DATE version.
You're better off formatting the date at the application level.
The reason your query does nothing is that the actual DATE values are equivalent. Notice when you take any valid date format and CAST() it as DATE the resulting format is the same regardless of the input:
SELECT CAST('20040510' AS DATE)
SELECT CAST('2004-05-10' AS DATE)
SELECT CAST('May 10, 2004' AS DATE)
All return: 2004-05-10 on my instance of SQL Server.
