Generating Sample Data in Expression Blend - xaml

I am looking for a good practice in this scenario: I am working with Expression Blend, and want to create a datatemplate for the items in a listbox. I already have project with a model class, lets call it User which will be the holder of data to be displayed in the ListBox items. And what I want to do is to get some sample data containing users that can be bound to the listbox to view the design work in progress.
Microsofts idea with Blend is for it to rid the need of programming skills for designer folks in the process of creating the UI. So I was expecting there to be a way to generate a sample data based on the pre existing code, in this case User class, without any coding.
The proposed solutions that can be done from Blend that I've seen are either, generate an xml-file with elements of type User, and then create a sample data source out of this and bind it to the ListBox. Or, select "new sample data" in the Data tab which will create a collection of a new type with a set of properties that can be managed from Blend. None of theses options are what I am looking for, the first since it will demand the user to precreate an xml file, which is not part of a designers job, the second doesn't meet the requirement of being a data source containing the relevant type, User.

On the Data tab, "Create Sample Data" button, there is an option for "Create Sample Data from Class". As long as the class is already defined and referenced in the project, I think this will do what you want.

What is the difference between fields and formfields?

in word pressing alt+F9 can display "FieldCodes"
How can I access this programmatically using vba and pair them with the formfields?
You can access the field code by ? Application.ActiveDocument.Fields(1).Code
And you can access the form fields by Application.ActiveDocument.FormFields(1)
But is there any guarantee's about the indices matching?
Can a formfield ever not be a Field? can a Field ever not be a formfield?
Will changing these away from FORMTEXT have any unintended side effects, or are these basically nice and friendly linking id's / display values allowing you to view them and swap between them with ease?
Edit: I've come up with the following to get the fields Code. I'm still unsure if it's a good idea to edit them or not, or what they represent.
Application.ActiveDocument.FormFields(1).Range.Fields(1).Code
Fields are general objects, they can be :
document's properties (built-in or custom),
mailing / mergemail,
calculation,
form fields,
...
A form fields is an field for inputs.
Take a look at the links in the tag info of word-field, there is a lot of interesting things!
And you can access them by their own collections (press F2 in VBE to use Object Browser).
For Fields the general collection is in Application.ActiveDocument.Fields,
but you can find them in a lot of objects (check with Object Browser!).
Take a look at that answer to have an idea of the other objects in which you can find it! ;)
To my knowledge, there is no possibility nest something inside a FormField, like you can do in a Field.
I'm not sure to understand that question :
"Will changing these away from FORMTEXT have any unintended side effects,
or are these basically nice and friendly linking id's / display values
allowing you to view them and swap between them with ease?"
If you want to create a Form that users can fill, you'll need to stick with FormFields.
If you want to display values at specific places in a document, Fields is the way to go.
I'd even suggest Custom Document Properties for a general use, and MergeMail for Mailings. ;)

Appending some text to certain message's subject in outlook's preview

I am writing a add-in for outlook 2010 using VSTO and c#.
From my add-in at run time I want to append some text to the subject of certain email messages in outlook 2010's preview pane.
A screenshot of what I am trying to achieve is below. In the screenshot please note that some of the messages have '[work email]' appended to the subject in red text. That is what I am trying to achieve.
Is there any way of doing this either from c# or a macro?
You cannot do that. You can either modify the subject (but you won't be bale to show the string in a different color) or you can set a user defined property and configure the folder view to show the message in red if that property is present (View Settings | Conditional Formatting).
The Outlook object model doesn't provide anything for displaying a part of the Subject string using different colors.
A possible solution is to customize the CurrentView of the Explorer or Inspector objects. To obtain a View object for the view of the current Explorer, use Explorer.CurrentView instead of the CurrentView property of the current Folder object returned by Folder.CurrentFolder.
The View object allows you to create customizable views that allow you to better sort, group and ultimately view data of all different types. There are a variety of different view types that provide the flexibility needed to create and maintain your important data.
The table view type (olTableView) allows you to view data in a simple field-based table.
The Calendar view type (olCalendarView) allows you to view data in a calendar format.
The card view type (olCardView) allows you to view data in a series of cards. Each card displays the information contained by the item and can be sorted.
The icon view type (olIconView) allows you to view data as icons, similar to a Windows folder or explorer.
The timeline view type (olTimelineView) allows you to view data as it is received in a customizable linear time line.
Views are defined and customized using the View object's XML property. The XML property allows you to create and set a customized XML schema that defines the various features of a view.
The XML definition describes the view type by using a series of tags and keywords corresponding to various properties of the view itself. When the view is created, the XML definition is parsed to render the settings for the new view.
To determine how the XML should be structured when creating views, you can create a view by using the Outlook user interface and then you can retrieve the XML property for that view.
To programmatically add a custom field to a view, use the Add method of the ViewFields object. This is the recommended way to dynamically change the view over setting the XML property of the View object.

Data entry form in sharepoint

I was wondering if anyone knows what a simplest way to create a data entry form in Sharepoint 2010 Foundation would be. Basicly I am looking to create a form that will submit its data to a custom list on the site, I don't want the users to interact with the list directly but use the form to enter data instead.
Also I can't use Designer or InfoPath, not being able to use these is what is causing the problem it seems. Just curious if anyone else has done something like this or could point me in the right direction.
Thanks
Every list is born with forms by default - one for item creation, one for edition and one for displaying. If you use content types, then you get a trio of these for each different type.
You never interact with the list directly, you do it through these forms. If you can't use either Infopath nor Sharepoint Designer, you can still edit them by clicking on the Page tab, then the Edit Page button. From there you can add or remove web parts, and connect them among themselves.
However, the amount of control you have is too limited when compared to editing pages through either of the tools or mentioned, or Visual Studio. For example, there is no straightforward way to add or remove list fields based on content type. Be prepared for ever increasing frustration if you can't use those tools.

VB Chat Interface - Displaying Users

I am new to Visual Basic and trying to get around in developing a good gui for a chat interface. I can understand the language as i have been using php and java from quite sometime.
Requirement
Basically i am trying to develop a interface which will show a list of users and along with that display a status (online/offline). My users will reside in mysql database. On clicking the user i want some actions to happen.
Question
I see there is datagrid, listview, listbox but not sure which one to use. Also is it a good idea to display the users by directly quering the mysql database or by accessing a php script which runs few queries and gives the data?
The ListBox control would not be a great option since it doesn't easily support multiple columns. The ListView control in Details view is a great option. I think it looks and works nicer than a DataGrid, but it doesn't natively support multi-line items. If you need multi-line items, the DataGrid control may be your best choice. Another option, which would give you more flexibility, would be to use a LayoutPanel control to display a vertical list of your own UserControl. You could design the UserControl anyway you want meaning you could fully control the size, look, and layout of each item in the list without being constrained by the list control.
As far as getting the data, that depends. If the database is always on the LAN and performance is important, then each client should go directly to the database. Otherwise, getting the data from a php script, web service, or WCF service would be a much better choice.
Rather than using the TableLayoutPanel, I would recommend using the FlowLayoutPanel with the FlowDirection property to TopDown and the AutoScroll property set to True. Then, to add a control dynamically, you could do something like this:
Dim item As New MyUserControl()
' Set properties of user control
FlowLayouPanel1.Controls.Add(item)

Assigning a custom workflow to a work item type in Rational Team Concert

I'm in the process of customizing Rational Team Concert to include a custom work item type. As part of the testing of the work item type as I created it I populated a few of the custom work items with data. As I enhanced the custom work item type and added additional attributes I was able to use the "Check attributes usages in repository" from the "Types and Attributes" to ensure that the new attributes were propagated to my test work items.
Now I've gotten to the point where I need to create a custom workflow for this work item type. I've defined the workflow and and assigned it to the work item type, but my existing test work items can't seem to use it. Clicking on the "Check workflow usages in repository" link says "There are 9 work items in the repository referencing workflow states or resolutions that are not present in the bound workflow. Do you want to show these items in the Work Items view?".
The workitem view then just says that status = 1 for the test work items.
If I select a work to open in the rich client editor all of the process elements are inactive. If I open it in the web editor, it says that the status is "1", as shown below:
Is there any way to fix this and change the workflow of existing work items? I should add that new work items work just fine, but I'm worried about what might happen if I need to update the process again in the future.
In the context of work item customization, you have to manually sync existing work item attributes with the most recent version of the PA in order to take your changes into account.
The steps are detailed here in the manual page "Defining work item types and attributes":
(bottom of the page)
To manually update existing work items with new or modified custom attributes:
Run a query so that the query results contain all the work items that you want to update.
Note: Do not select any relationships to be shown in the query results.
If relationships are shown, the Type icon is not displayed and you cannot complete these steps.
To clear all relationships shown, in the Work Items view menu, select Relationships, click Deselect all, and then click OK.
In the Work Items view, select the work items that you want to modify.
In the row of one of the selected work items, right-click the Type icon and select Synchronize attributes.
Thanks.
Eric.
