Selenium Grid - Is it a paid Tool? - selenium

Is Selenium Grid ( Server or Client ) a paid tool?
I have surfed for this information and I didn't get much information on this.

Selenium grid is free, and you can find out more information on how to setup, and the project in general here:
http://selenium-grid.seleniumhq.org/get_started.html
https://code.google.com/p/selenium/wiki/Grid2

From their license page
All Selenium projects are licensed under the Apache 2.0 License.
So no, it is not a paid-for tool.

It is free and open source.

Please look at the documentation then come back with a particular problem.

I wanted to execute on the same Browser Type on the same Machine. This is not supported by Selenium Grid. Hence i took a different route and made the below changes.
Make multiple folder copy with the execution jar along with the essentials like testng.xml, config files, IE driver.....
Write a wrapper and trigger these execution jar one by one. It should work upto 5 IE11 browser on 4GB RAM machine.
This way we are able to run multiple tests on the same browser on the same machine cutting the usage of 3rd party tools like Sauce Labs, Browserstack at some extend...

running selenium tests via jmeter on blazemeter remotely

We have a jmeter test that launches selenium scripts using the chrome driver config plugin which runs with the Web Driver Sampler, with which we are uploading our own chrome driver. The driver wont be allowed to work though, we keep getting
java.lang.IllegalStateException: The driver is not executable: /tmp/artifacts/chromedriver
we need a way to chmod +x the driver or something similar. is there a way to do this?
Blazemeter support said
JMeter's Webdriver plugin has been deprecated and is not supported on BlazeMeter
but I don't see anything deprecating the webdriver plugin from jmeter The repo and main website seem updated and active.
https://github.com/undera/jmeter-plugins-webdriver
https://jmeter-plugins.org/wiki/WebDriverSampler/?utm_source=jmeter&utm_medium=helplink&utm_campaign=WebDriverSampler
TL/DR: Can we run a selenium test from within a jmeter test using a <com.googlecode.jmeter.plugins.webdriver.sampler.WebDriverSampler on blazemeter? what are the steps to do so?
I hit this exact issue, this is probably too late for you but I thought it would be useful to answer for someone else in the future.
According to this Blazemeter Post titled:
"Using Selenium with JMeter's WebDriver Sampler"
"To launch the WebDriver test in the cloud with more concurrent users on BlazeMeter, use Firefox, which is the only currently supported browser for use with WebDriver. Create a new test and upload your JMX file to run it."
So in summary, only firefox is supported, not chrome within Blazemeter.
I work on a lot of BlazeMeter's documentation and can verify the previous answer -- the Webdriver plugin for JMeter is no longer supported on BlazeMeter.
That's not to say you can't get it to work -- you might -- but it's not supported (i.e. the support team can't assist with any problems that arise with it).
Some added context: We know folks in the plugin development community, which is how we learned the plugin is "deprecated" in the sense that there's not much in the way of future development for it going forward. You're right though - it's not documented anywhere, unfortunately. I can't speak to why that is on the plugin side, but that's why it is no longer supported on the BlazeMeter side.
The other reason it's no longer supported is that we recently introduced a new feature to replace it, our "GUI Functional Test" feature in BlazeMeter, which lets you run Selenium tests either through our BlazeMeter UI or from your own IDE, then watch a recording of what happened in the browser afterward. We have a set of guides covering the topic, starting here:
https://guide.blazemeter.com/hc/en-us/articles/360000700158
We also introduced a means to run a Selenium test alongside a JMeter test, via what we call our End User Experience Monitoring feature, detailed here:
https://guide.blazemeter.com/hc/en-us/articles/360000262118
(That blog post referenced above is a very old one that unfortunately no longer applies today. I regrettably don't work on the blog side of the house, so I don't have the authority to update that one myself.)
Lastly, please let me know if there's any pain points in our docs that we can fix. I've been putting a lot of work into improving and expanding our existing documentation, so feedback is always welcome.

Cloud-based testing automation tools

I try to find a service which provides a functionality that allow me to create manual tests autmation for web-based applications in simple way with visual constructor without any coding, so it could be
simple in use without any coding on selenium or another framework tool
has option to set testing in schedule mode via the web interface to perform regression testing
has ID's validation and shows possible inconsistencies
The main point is reproduce manual tester's work without using automation scripts and do it in simple way in order to a beginner will be able to work with it.
So could anyone describe his own experience ?
There are two main options I would consider
to find a service which provides a functionality that allow me to create manual tests autmation for web-based applications in simple way
First one is BrowserStack and you can record your Selenium tests using the Selenium IDE extension for FireFox. It can export the recorded steps into your favorite language (C#, Python, ect). You can execute these recorded scripts on BrowserStack by pointing the hub URL to Browserstack's Selenium hub ‘http://hub.browserstack.com/wd/hub’ along with your username and Automate key. Your 'username' and 'automate key' can be found at Account --> Automate1, after you have logged in to your account.
I would suggest, you refer to the comprehensive documentation on BrowserStack Automate. It takes you step-by-step through the product and all its features. You can select the language you are using and get started with BrowserStack Automate. If you have any more questions, feel free to email at support#browserstack.com. They will be happy to help you out.
Second option is SauceLabs and the Selenium Builder. This is the docs that will guide you. Further more you have CI integrations for Jenkins and Bamboo.
You can use Selenium IDE to create your automated tests. With this Firefox plugin, you can record a test in your browser.
Once you're done recording, you can export the test and upload it to TestingBot. There you can specify the browsers you want to run the test on. TestingBot will then run your test across all the browsers you specified.

Does anyone know browser emulators?

Over 2 years I tested web application with help Selenium framework. I know the best design is testing on VM.
The only one downside of this - it's very slow testing. Why?
browser only gets so much memory, if you will run several instances.
site coud be very slow.
connections can be very slow.
Would be great if there was a framework that emulated the browser (engine/core) correctly and can provide some results (api) for surf on the page.
I don't mean to simulate just on the one browser with different version (like IE). I mean to simulate for all browsers with very popular and newest version.
Does anyone know a framework/tool that can do it?
Thank you.
You can try PhantomJS for example.
From their page:
PhantomJS is a headless WebKit with JavaScript API. It has fast and
native support for various web standards: DOM handling, CSS selector,
JSON, Canvas, and SVG.
You can use it in combination with Jasmine (as well as several other frameworks) for testing.
However the selection of available engines is limited to WebKit. I doubt that Selenium will be easy to replace. By the way it looks like Selenium will probably become a W3C standard over the next years.
You can also run Selenium with Xvfb - I use it to execute test on remote server and it is going very well.

How to setup Selenium RC to test any website on the internet?

I'm new in using Selenium.
Selenium IDE is a user-friendly firefox plugin. I have no problem in using it. However, I found that the documentation for other Selenium tools such as Selenium RC and Selenium Core is quite confusing for beginners. It seems that the author assume that the readers already have deep knowledge in using these tools.
For example, when I try to figure out how to setup Selenium RC to test a webserver, the only diagram i can find from the Selenium website is this:
http://www.sparksupport.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/selenium-rc.png
From this diagram, i can't even see which one is the webserver under test and where should i install the Selenium components.
At first I thought this diagram is a bit weird and i should be able to get a better diagram from other websites. I was surprised to find that almost all Selenium RC setup diagram on the internet are similar to this diagram (clones). No one has ever attempted to create a different diagram or give more description for Selenium RC setup.
Appreciate if anyone can give me guidance on how to setup Selenium RC. The things that i want to know are:
Can i use Selenium RC to test any website on the Internet?
How to setup Selenium RC?
Is my current setup correct? My current setup is like this: In a LAN network which has access to the Internet, I have 3 servers. Server-1 comes with IE8, Server-2 comes with Firefox 3.6. Server-3 will be used as the Selenium RC server. So, Selenium RC in server-3 will remotely control server-1 and server-2 to start up IE and FF. Server-1 and 2 will use server-3 as the HTTP proxy to connect to any webserver on the Internet. If I want to test a website such as yahoo.com, I can write Selenium script and let it run in Server-3 to control the IE and FF in server-1 and 2.
This info is related to Selenium 1.
Selenium system consists of 3 parts:
selenium core - that is javascript library that will be used to simulate user actions
selenium RC - this is selenium-server.jar - mediation JETTY server that will receive requests from selenium client. Selenium Server RC (Remote Control) should be on the same machine where the Browser placed
Selenium client - java/ruby/... library that you will be use with your tests to communicate with Selenium RC.
It will be helpful if you provide language that you use for your tests and other technical details.
About your questions:
can
type in command line -> java selenium-server.jar
or you can use class SeleniumServer in your program
please use text formatting when ask questions.
server-1 will has IE8 and SeleiumServer
server-2 will has FF and yet one SeleniumServer
server-3 will has you client tests
FYI - you can run all together on one PC
The below diagram is of a web application test system that I've implemented on numerous occassions. This does not show you specifically details on installing Selenium RC, but it does show you, at a high level, all of the necessary system components and how they interface.
We hope you can use it to get ideas on how to implement your own systems using open source solutions like Selenium, MySQL and Perl.
Our team understands that not all web sites are created equal, and, in order for any automation initiative to be successful a thorough analysis must be performed of not only the web application, but the business as well. Since our client's QA team, while technically savvy, were not programmers we decided to implement a page object design pattern where all of the "magical selenium commands" were abstracted in a class and exposed to the test developers as methods they would call from their test scripts.
The resulting implementation, as seen in the diagram below, is currently deployed and keeping management and interested parties up to date on the status of key functional areas of the web site.

In the coming weeks, we are going to be covering each implementation step in more detail. We look forward to any feedback!

GUI Testing tools forBusiness analaysts

I have been looking around stackoverflow for automated GUI tools for testing our web app gui from a Business analyst point of view, so that means strictly requirements-record-playback kind of testing since we are not really programmers.
We have used selenium in the past but unfortunately it is no longer compatible with Firefox 4.
Is there a similar tool to selenium that allows recording and playback of GUI tests that does not require a lot or any scripting on a windows platform? thanks
You can use the FireFox add on compatibility reporter to get Selenium working on FF4
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/add-on-compatibility-reporter/
Or alternatively drop down to FireFox 3.x and use that just for your testing!
For the server component Selenium-RC (necessary to execute tests), You must run Selenium-RC 2.0b3 (or higher if it become) to be compatible with Firefox 4. I have used it succesfully with FF4.
Selenium IDE, the recording tool, for firefox is indeed not available as a plugin for FF4 (but I speculate it will be coming soon).
I think that you can benefit from AutoIt (http://www.autoitscript.com/site/autoit/) I`d been using it to test Windows based GUI, but to the best of knowledge there are lot of scripts to test/play on-line games, thus it is applicable to Web Sites.
It does not require deep technical knowledge, but of course it will be much better and frequently mandatory to optimize the generated code. I`ve started my experience with this tool, and I was doing my work flawlessly.
At one company, I was developing automated tests for web app by means of TestPartner (Compuware company) it was one of the best tools Ive ever worked with, it generates VB code quite 'intelligently' and supports user with administration features. But Im not sure whether it is possible to use it without paying.
Good luck !
