I have a SQL Azure database. I can successfully connect to the database via the Azure management portal. In addition, I can successfully connect to the database from my application using the Entity Framework. Unfortunately, I cannot connect to the database via SQL Server Management Studio.
My thought was that SQL Server Management Studio could not connect to the 'master' database. For that reason, it would fail. So, I tried adding the database name via the "Connect to Database" field on the "Connection Properties" tab. Yet, I get the same error. The error looks like the following:
TITLE: Connect to Server
------------------------------
Cannot connect to tcp:{serverName}.database.windows.net,1433.
------------------------------
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Login failed for user '{username}'.
This session has been assigned a tracing ID of '{id}'. Provide this tracing ID to customer support when you need assistance. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 18456)

What am I doing incorrectly here? This "server" has 2 SQL Azure databases on it that I'd like to access via management studio. How do I add users so that i can login an manage those two databases? Is there a way to even manage users on a SQL Azure database? I can't seem to figure it out.
Thank you for your help.
What version of SQL Enterprise Management Studio are you using? You need at least SQL Enterprise Management Studio 2008 R2 or later. (Might as well get the latest: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=29062)
Assuming you've got that, you'd enter it like so in the Connect to Server dialog:
Server type: Database Engine
Server name: tcp:servername.database.windows.net
Authentication: SQL Server
Login: username#servername
Password: password
That should do it -- the other thing to check are the firewall restrictions. You'd be seeing a different error ("client IP address is not allowed access") but it's good to verify that, anyway.

I have installed Azure Data Studio and the extension SQL Agent. I have also installed the Admin package extension as it seems to be under that.
It does not appear when i click on Manage for the connected database.
How can i get it to appear ?
I installed Azure data studio and sql server agent in Azure data studio using extension menu.
Image for reference:
After connection of Sql Server without clicking manage automatically Sql agent is appear in my case.
Image for reference:
If the Login account connecting to Azure data studio is not a part of SysAdmin role in SQL Server, then SQL Server Agent would not be visible to check this run below query in Azure data studio
Select IS_SRVROLEMEMBER('Sysadmin')
If a value is zero, then you are not a Sysadmin and hence you can’t see SQL Server Agent.
I run the above query I got as
Another possible reason would be that SQL Server in not an edition which supports SQL Server Agent. Typically, SQL Server Express edition could be another cause.
To verify, you can run below query in Azure data studio
SELECT SERVERPROPERTY('Edition')
I run above query in my system I got as
If the output is “Express” or “Express Edition with Advanced Services”, then you would not see SQL Server Agent node in Azure data studio.
Kindly check above properties of your sql server.
I have just installed SQL Server 2008 R2 Management Studio. But I do not know what is the default login.
I searched over internet for solution, but no luck!
I have tried following solutions:
Server Type: Database Engine
Server Name: .
Authentication: Windows Authentication
and
Server Type: Database Engine
Server Name: .\SqlExpress
Authentication: Windows Authentication
But not sure why not working, I keep getting the following error:
Connect to Server
A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an
error occurred during the pre-login handshake. (provider: SSL
Provider, error: 0 - The message received was unexpected or badly
formatted.) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: -2146893018)
There is no default login for windows authentication. I believe you need to add the current user as an administrator to login. Did you select SQL and Windows authentication and provide an SA password?
OP, has your computer had any recent updates? The SQL services tend to stop when system receives big updates, check that there are no services stopped.
The only reason I'm assuming this is your solution is because I see you can't even log in with Windows Authentication
It looks like you have only installed SQL Management Studio and not SQL Server with Tools i.e. SQL Server plus SSMS. I guess this is what you need?
It looks like you have only installed SQL Management Studio and not SQL Server with Tools i.e. SQL Server plus SSMS. I guess this is what you need? Also there is nothing wrong with your machine it is just that you require an instance of sql and you have only installed the management studio so you now just need to install sql server 2008 R2 express (FREE) I would suggest.
I am using Windows-server-2008 with Microsoft SQL Server 2008.
And there are a lot of questions about this, but nothing on the internet solved it.
The problem is that i can't connect to the my SQL Server 2008 R2 after rebooting my server.
I placed some new memory in my server, and after rebooting my client/server application didn't work anymore because it cannot reach the database.
So i tried to get in SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS), and tried to loggin with Administrator and another user but both do not work.
When i logg in the following message is displayed:
Cannot connect to (local)
A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection
to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance
name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections.
(provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)
(Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 2)
I Tried a lot of different things like:
Rebooting server
Try to start the server manually from Sql Server Configuration Manager
Named Pipes - Enabled
TCP/IP - Enabled
Tried to create an new system user or database user as described in the following article: Click Here
Can somebody please help me? I am really confused because i need to get this online. Otherwise i have to reinstall the database server but i do not have a back-up. (is there some folder with a back-up of the settings/tables/columns are stored and can be imported from reinstall?
I was having the exact same problem. net start mssqlserver was giving me the blurb about a failed login attempt. The problem was that I had recently changed the password for the administrator account, and the new password didn't get updated in services.
Here's how I fixed it:
First locate SQL Server from the list here:
Right click and select properties, and navigate to the Log On tab:
Then I typed the new password, and like magic I was able to start SQL Server right through the services manager.
I also did this for any other processes which were marked as "stopped" even though Startup Type was marked as "automatic" (namely, SQL Server Agent).
Is it a named instance or default? Also, is this a local instance? (I see the "(local)" but just wanted to make sure.)
Start the sql server services from services.msc and try to connect
I've just started work on a new computer in which I had to download all the software fresh.
I've just download a copy of SQL Server 2008 R2, and I'm trying to connect to SQL Server Management Studio without success. I vaguely remember last time I installed this, it asked me to choose between windows, or sql server authentication, however this didn't happen for this installation.
If I try to login via Windows Authentication (where the username and password fields are greyed out, localhost as server name) it gives the following error:
"A Network-related or instance
specific error occured while
establishing a connection to SQL
Server. The server was not found or
was not accessible. Verify that the
instance name is correct and that SQL
Server is configured to allow remote
connections. (provider: Named Pipes
Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a
connection to SQL Server) (Microsoft
SQL Server, Error: 2)"
I have checked everything in SQL Server Configuration Manager, and everything bar VIA is enabled.
If I try SQL Server Authentication, It asks me for a username and password which I definiately have not set yet. Also, under SQL Server Services in configuration manager, there is nothing there.
Any help would be appreciated :)
Thanks
PS: I don't know if it's worth mentioning but I am running Windows 7 as a virtual machine on a Mac.
Are you sure you have the correct instance name? If it was SQL Server 2008 R2 Express Edition then the default instance name is .\SQLEXPRESS.
Also if your using sql authentication to connect try running sql management studio as admin, if you are a limited user your identity might not be mapped to an account in sql server yet but i believe the Administrators user group is.
You need to check if your services are running.
Please type
net start mssqlserver
in your command prompt. Then try to login.
Ended up reinstalling completely and doing a fresh install from a fresh download. When I did this I was brought through the steps of selecting the default instance, and selecting authentication modes.
Working fine now :)
After checking tons of sites looking for an answer to this question, I think I have a simple solution.
Open the sql Server Configuration
Click on the sql server services node
Right Click on Sql server
Click Start.
I have been screwing around with this forever, and this simple method actually worked.
I just created a new database in "Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express" and now I'm in "ColdFusion Administrator" and I'm trying to add my database as a Data Source. How do I do that? I believe the servername is .\SQLEXPRESS but I'm not sure what the default username and password are. I've tried creating a new login through Management Studio with an actual username and password, but those aren't working either. The error I'm getting is:
Connection verification failed for data source: xxx
java.sql.SQLNonTransientConnectionException: [Macromedia][SQLServer JDBC Driver]The requested instance is either invalid or not running.
The root cause was that: java.sql.SQLNonTransientConnectionException: [Macromedia][SQLServer JDBC Driver]The requested instance is either invalid or not running.
I can see that the service is running, and I can connect to it through management studio. I've tried following a couple tutorials online, but they don't seem to be working for me. Ideas?
Server name can be any resolvable hostname or domain name, in case of having SQL Server and CF server on same box localhost should work for you.
Also make sure that user you created has access to the particular database and needed operations. Look into the database permissions for this. This check is not required when using master account (often login is sa), but this is not recommended practice because of the security reasons.
Also make sure SQL Server and Windows Authentication mode is checked. I had an issue with permissions as well when I only had Windows Authentication enabled under:
right click on server (localhost) -> security
Then restart SQL Server Services to save changes. After that I was able to connect my ColdFusion datasource to SQL Server.
For testings sake use the same credentials that you are connected with in Management Studio, likely the "sa" user and password. Once you have it working with "sa" then go back into Management Studio and create an application level user for your CF app and then update the data source to use your new user / password.
