I am trying to implement an auto complete feature similar to facebook city selector where one enters the city name and the autocomplete appears in the form "city, state, country".
I have dbs of cities states and countries
I followed the railscast auto complete video.
My code is as follows
Cities controller
def index
#cities = City.order(:name).where("lower(name) like ?", "%#{params[:term].downcase}%")
render json: #cities.map(&:name)
end
User.js.coffee
jQuery ->
$('#user_city_name').autocomplete
source: $('#user_city_name').data('autocomplete-source')
users/new/html.erb
<div class="field">
<%= f.label :city_name %><br />
<%= f.text_field :city_name, data: {autocomplete_source: cities_path} %>
</div>
the city is all that needs to be auto selected but I would like when the user is selecting that they see the auto select option as city, state, country because there are a lot of cities with the same name in different states. can anyone point me in the right direction plz and thank you
I figured out how to do it. Changed the cities controller index to
def index
if params[:term]
#cities = City.order(:name).where("lower(name) like ?", "%#{params[:term].downcase}%").includes(:state)
cities_list = #cities.map {|city| Hash[id: city.id, label: "#{city.name}, #{city.state.name}, #{city.state.country.name}", value: city.name]}
render json: cities_list
else
#cities = City.all
end
end

I've been trying for a while to find the best way of querying for the desired result, but I always end up failing at some poing in the query.
Simplified database structure:
User:
id (integer)
first_name (string)
last_name (string)
CourseType:
title (string)
slug (string)
Course:
belongs_to :user
belongs_to :course_type
week (integer)
sold (float)
My controller is calling a scope:
#users = User.sales_results(week)
And here's the scope in my model:
scope :sales_results, lambda { |week|
joins(:courses => [:course_type])
.select("
users.id, users.first_name, users.last_name,
SUM(courses.sold) as total_sold,
COUNT(courses) as num_classes
")
.where("courses.week = ?", week)
.group('users.id')
}
This works fine, and I can use it in my template to show the total amount sold. Although I also want to show a second column where the value sold for some specific types of courses are summed up in. Something like this:
<% #users.each do |user| %>
<%= user.total_sold %>
<%= user.total_sold.where("course_types.slug IN ('H', 'S')") # not possible, but similar to what I desire %>
<% end %>
Update
I ended up adding another scope
scope :sales_results_for_types, lambda { |week, types|
sales_results(week).except(:group).where("course_types.slug IN (?)", types)
.group('users.id')
}
Then calling both scopes in my controller
#users = User.sales_results(...)
#users_filtered = User.sales_results_for_types(...)
Lastly iterating both results at the same time
<% #users.zip(#users_filtered).each do |user, filtered| %>
<%= filtered.total_sold %>
<%= user.total_sold %>
Until I figure out something better. Thanks guys for leading me on the right track.
If you are ok with having another query, you can use this
user.joins(courses: :course_type).sum(:sold, group: 'course_types.slug')
which will give you a hash where the keys are the slugs, and the values are the sums.
I'd like to group a collection alphabetically by title:
#projects = Project.find_all_by_user_id(current_user.id)
The view should contain a list of projects grouped by title, e.g.:
A
Andre's Project
Ananas
C
Chemnitz
Cleopatra
F
Find a new office
S
Super secret stuff
But I got no clue how to do this in rails. Does rails provide a functionality to do this or do I need to write my own loop looking for the titles etc.?
Thank you!
Not Rails but Ruby does the trick. In your view:
<% #projects.group_by{ |project| project.name[0].downcase }.each do |letter, projects| %>
<div id="letter-<%= letter %>" class="letter-group">
<h2><%= letter.upcase %><h2>
<% projects.each do |project| %>
<p><%= link_to project.name, project %></p>
<% end %>
</div>
<% end %>
group_by (ruby-doc) returns a hash you can easily loop through with letters as keys and arrays of corresponding projects as values. Be sure to already get your records sorted by project's name: (in your controller)
#projects = Project.order("name ASC").find_all_by_user_id(current_user.id)
I have a rails app that gives users assignments and prompts them via email to come back and note that their assignment is completed or take some other action. I have three different actions (remind me later, choose a different assignment, or get help from a coach) which are represented by three radio buttons. How do I group these so that the user can only choose one of the three actions at a time?
<%= form_for(#assignment, :url => user_assignment_path(#user, #assignment)) do |a| %>
<%= a.radio_button :next_reminder_date, value: (Date.today + 2) %> <h3>Remind me again in 2 days.</h3><br>
<%= a.radio_button :coach_requested, true %> <h3>I'm stuck! Have a coach contact me.</h3><br>
<%= a.radio_button :abandoned, true %> <h3>This sucks. Give me another assignment.</h3><br>
<%= a.submit "Update assignment", class: "btn btn-primary btn-large" %>
<% end %>
I think you have two options. One would be to set the values using JavaScript. When any of the values is set, you can reset the other values. This won't work if a user doesn't have JavaScript so I'd recommend option 2.
Use something like this in your View:
radio_button_tag :next_action, :next_reminder_date
radio_button_tag :next_action, :coach_requested
radio_button_tag :next_action, :abandoned
Then in your Controller:
case params[:next_action]
when :next_reminder_date
#assignment.next_reminder_date = Date.today + 2
when :coach_requested
#assignment.coach_requested = true
when :abandoned
#assignment.abondoned = true
end
I hope that helps.
Hi i am using the date picker jquery ui in combination with rails 3.1. The date picker looks brilliant, only the date isn't stored in the database? Only sometimes...? So that's a difficult error.
This is my .js file:
$(function() {
$("#question_deadline").datepicker({ duration: 'fast', maxDate: '+2m', minDate: 'now', showOn: "button", buttonImage: "calendar.gif", buttonImageOnly: true });
$("#question_deadline").datepicker("option", "showAnim", "drop");
$("#question_deadline").datepicker("option", "dateFormat", "DD, d MM, yy");
});
In my controller there's just plain rails script:
def create
#question = Question.new(params[:question])
if #question.save
redirect_to questions_path, :notice => "Successfully created question."
else
setup_questions
render :index
end
end
In views file _form.html.erb i use a text_field to display the date:
<div class="field">
<%= f.label :content, "Question" %><br />
<%= f.text_field :content, :placeholder => "type your question here.." %>
<%= f.text_field :deadline %><br />
</div>
Are there people who have experience with datepiacker jquery ui and rails, the ryan bates episode, didn't solve it, i think that was written in rails 2.3?
Regards,
Thijs
First, you need to show us the view where you have the datepicker element. If it's like this:
<input type="text" name="question_deadline" id="question_deadline" />
When you submit this form, the parameters you receive in your controller (in the method "create") is called question_deadline. So in that create method you should first write:
if params[:question_deadline] != ""
params[:question][:question_deadline] = params[:question_deadline]
end
#add a else if this date field is compulsory in the database
This step is important because the create method will read stuff from params[:question][:question_deadline] not from params[:question_deadline] which is returned from the view.
Thus params[:question][:question_deadline] is empty when you do #question.save
To display the date, you also need to show us the controller "show" method that should be something like:
#question = Question.find(params[:id]) #or any sql request that returns info about a question.
Then in the view you can retrieve it simply with:
<%= #question.question_deadline%>
Maybe with more code from you controller and view I can elaborate on that.
I think, Rails/Ruby is not able to parse a date in this format:
$("#question_deadline").datepicker("option", "dateFormat", "DD, d MM, yy");
// full day name, day (w/o leading zero), full month name, 4-digit year
In your controller, you might want to add a line such as
def create/update
...
#question.deadline = DateTime.strptime(params[:question][:deadline], '%A, %d %B, %Y')
# assuming my jquery-to-ruby format-mapping is adequate ;-)
if #question.save
...
end
Beware, that this code easily breaks on malformed date strings.
If you don't want to change the format to, e.g. 'yy-mm-dd' (in Ruby-land it's '%Y-%m-%d'), you may want to populate the selected date to another HTML element using the altField option and hide the actual datepicker input field via CSS:
$("#somewhere_else").datepicker(
dateFormat: "%yy-%mm-%dd",
altField: "#question_deadline",
altFormat: "DD, d MM, yy",
...
);
<%= form_for #question do |f| %>
...
<%= text_field_tag 'somewhere_else', #question.deadline %>
<%= f.hidden_field :deadline %>
...
<% end %>
That'll work, at least for me :-)

The other option is to update the way ActiveSupport parses dates. This is outlined in Default Date Format in Rails (Need it to be ddmmyyyy)
I have a radio_button_tag in a form, which holds various values for a persons current availability:
Mike Donnall o Available o Out of office o Vacation
So originally you open the form, and select a value, this then sets the value in the Status table for that Person.
However, there's also functionality to re-open the form and update his present status, perhaps from Vacation to Available.
My question is, is there anyway at all that radio button :checked can be modified to accept a custom method, I have found something in a similar posting, but I want the value foe that radio button to be set to the value in the DB.
My code so far, a stab in the dark perhaps:
View:
<% #people.each do |p| %>
<% #statuses.each do |s| %>
<%= "#{p.name}" %>
<%= "#{s.status_name}" -%><%= radio_button_tag ['person', p.id], ['status',
s.id], checked?(p.id) %>
<% end %>
<% end %>
Helper:
def checked?(person)
#person = person
#status = Status.find_by_sql(['select status_id from statuses where person_id = ?, #person])
if #result
return true
end
As you can see Im a bit lost here, but I understand that the method should return the value of the checkbox that needs to be checked, but Im wondering because its a checked functionality, would it only be limited to being a true or false?
So for a persons.status.id check if its true or false.
It seems from your helper's SQL that you the following relationship setup between People and Statuses:
class Person < ActiveRecord::Base
has_one :status
end
class Status < ActiveRecord::Base
belongs_to :person
end
You can access one given person status like this:
person = Person.first
person_status = person.status
Using that knowledge, your desired view outcome becomes quite simple:
<% #people.each do |p| %>
<p><%= "#{p.name}" -%>
<% #statuses.each do |s| %>
<%= "#{s.status_name}" -%>
<%= radio_button_tag ['person', p.id],
['status', s.id],
(p.status == s) ? true : false %>
<% end %>
<% end %>
You can of course extract the logic to a helper, but that doesn't seem necessary.
On a personal note, this isn't the way I'd present the information to user, it' too heavy on information in one line. I suggest you put the person's name in a p tag, and use a ul tag for the statuses.
