character_length Teradata SQL Assistant - sql

I have to run column checks for data consistency and the only thing that is throwing off my code is checking for character lengths for dates between certain parameters.

The date format of the column is YYYY-MM-DD, and the type is DA. When I run the script in SQL Assistant, I get an error 3580 "Illegal use of CHARACTERS, MCHARACTERS, or OCTET_LENGTH functions."
Preliminary research suggests that SQL Assistant has issues with the character_length function, but I don't know how to adjust the code to make it run.

with chareter length are you trying to get the memory used? Becuase if so that is constant for a date field. If you are trying to get the length of the string representation i think LENGTH(A.date) will suffice. Unfortanatly since teradata will pad zeros on conversions to string, I think this might always return 10.

Okay so if you want a date in a special 'form' when you output it you need to select it properly. In teradata as with most DBs Date are not store in strings, but rather as ints, counting days from a given 'epoch' date for the database (for example the epoch might be 01/01/0000). Each date type in teradata has a format parameter, which places in the record header instructions on how to format the output on select. By default a date format is set to this DATE FROMAT 'MM/DD/YYYY' I believe. You can change that by casting.
Try SELECT cast(cast(A.date as DATE FORMAT 'MM-DD-YYYY') as CHAR(10)) FROM A. and see what happens. There should be no need to validate the form of the dates past a small sample to see if the format is correct. The second cast forces the database to perform the conversion and use the format header specified. Other wise what you might see is the database will pass the date in a date form to SQL Assitant and sql assitant will perform the conversion on the application level, using the format specified in its own setting rather then the one set in the database.

Conversion of Date for direct sql query in OBIEE using presentation variable

I am trying to achieve this use case: when there is no date picked I want to show all the results but when I have date picked I want it to filter.
fyi:
the date getting picked are YYYY-MM-DD HH24:MI:SS in the presentation variable, but the date format in my query is dd-mon-yy. So when I need to convert the value of the presntation varible to dd-mon-yy.
OBIEE doesnt like when I play around with the values, and the BI server does not let me look at the error message.
I dont have access to change the format on the server level so my only option is to use formulas
I'm new to presentation variable.
ALso I need you'll to remember if there is no date selected in the prompt I would want all values returned

Inside the database, it doesn't care if a date is "DD Mon YY" or "YYYY-MM-DD HH24:MI:SS". Those are just formatting, and the actual bit value of that date will be the same. So if both "dates" are actually a date datatype, then you can just use something like:

That's if your pv_task_sch_???_date are passed as NULL values when not selected. Oracle does seem to treat empty strings and NULL the same in comparisons like this, but you it can be hard to debug if you get in the habit of relying on NULL and '' being the same.
As for your query, my guess is that your pv_task... values are actually being passed to your query as a some sort of string. If that's the case, then you'll need to put a TO_DATE() around your pv_task... variables.

I did say earlier that the database doesn't care when format your date is in. And it is stored the same, no matter the format. But when you're using TO_DATE() or other similar functions, Oracle wants you to specify the proper mask of your data. If you send "01 Jan 99" to TO_DATE(), Oracle needs to know how to interpret that value. So you tell it that the string is "DD Mon YY". You can't do TO_DATE('2018-09-10','YYYY-MM-DD HH24:MI:SS') because my input doesn't have a time component. ( I would also caution about using 2-digit years. )
By the way, I hate dates. And dealing with dates in Oracle reinforces that hatred.

DB2 Convert Number to Date

For some reason (I have no control over this) dates are stored as Integers in an iSeries AS400 DB2 system that I need to query. E.g. today will be stored as:

Being in the UK I need it to be like the below in Date format:

However, all I get is Nulls. If I remove the Date function, then it does work but its now a string, which I don't want:

Simplest is to use TIMESTAMP_FORMAT :

Note, you didn't specify where you are doing this, but since you tagged as ibm-midrange, I am answering for embedded SQL. If you want JDBC, or ODBC, or interactive SQL, the concept is similar, just the means of achieving it is different.
Make sure SQL is using dates in the correct format, it defaults to *ISO. For you it should be *EUR. In RPG, you can do it this way:
exec sql set option *datfmt = *EUR;
Make sure that set option is the first SQL statement in your program, I generally put it immediately between D and C specs.
Note that this is not an optimal solution for a program. Best practice is to set the RPG and SQL date formats both to *ISO. I like to do that explicitly. RPG date format is set by
ctl-opt DatFmt(*ISO);
SQL date format is set by

Now all internal dates are processed in *ISO format, and have no year range limitation (year can be 0001 - 9999). And you can display or print in any format you please. Likewise, you can receive input in any format you please.
Edit Dates are a unique beast. Not every language, nor OS knows how to handle them. If you are looking for a Date value, the only format you need to specify is the format of the string you are converting to a Date. You don't need to (can't) specify the internal format of the Date field, and the external format of a Date field can be mostly anything you want, and different each time you use it. So when you use TIMESTAMP_FORMAT() as #Stavr00 mentioned:
DATE(TIMESTAMP_FORMAT(CHAR(OAORDT),'YYYYMMDD'))
The format provided is not the format of the Date field, but the format of the data being converted to a Timestamp. Then the Date() function converts the Timestamp value into a Date value. At this point format doesn't matter because regardless of which external format you have specified by *DATFMT, the timestamp is in the internal timestamp format, and the date value is in the internal date format. The next time the format matters is when you present the Date value to a user as a string or number. At that point the format can be set to *ISO, *EUR, *USA, *JIS, *YMD, *MDY, *DMY, or *JUL, and in some cases *LONGJUL and the *Cxxx formats are available.
Since none of variants suited my needs I've came out with my own.
It is as simple as:
select * from yourschema.yourtable where yourdate = int(CURRENT DATE - 1 days) - 19000000;
This days thing is leap year-aware and suits most needs fine.
Same way days can be turned to months or years.
No need for heavy artillery like VARCHAR_FORMAT/TIMESTAMP_FORMAT.
Below worked for me:
select date(substring(trim(DateCharCol), 1, 2)||'/'||substring(trim(DateCharCol), 3, 2)||'/'||'20'||substring(trim(DateCharCol), 5, 2)) from yourTable where TableCol =?;

Does TO_DATE function in oracle require strict format matching

I am confused with to_date(char[,'format'[,nls_lang]) function. Lets suppose I have to_date('31-DEC-1982','DD-MON-YYYY');should the format specified in the function be same as the date string? The above function works fine. When I use to_date('31-DEC-1982','DD-MM-YYYY'); also works fine but the month field in date string and that in format does not match.
So my doubt is should the date string and format specified match exactly to convert it to Date object.

Generally speaking, yes, the date string and specified format should match. But the reason why it works in your case is that Oracle, for certain cases, provides flexibility of alternative format matching.
Excerpt from official Oracle Site
If a match fails between a datetime format element and the corresponding characters in the date string, then Oracle attempts alternative format elements
So as per above table, you can use 'MON' or 'MONTH' in place of 'MM'.
Similarly you can use 'YYYY' in place 'YY', etc

Whatever format you follow, the object returned will be of date type.
You can test this via creating a dummy table and showing the table description.
e.g. CREATE TABLE TEST AS(
select to_date('31-DEC-1982','DD-MON-YYYY') dd from dual);
Now desc test;
Result will be dd date.
Similar will be the result with another type.
However if you are using SQL Developer, the date will be show in the exact NLS format as the setting there applies.

Changing SQL VARCHAR2 date to another date format

I have a date (stored as a VARCHAR2) in a database with the format:
20090123_163842.865
yyyyMMdd_hhmmss.ttt
and I want to make a SQL sentence to obtain:
23/01/2009 16:38:42,865
dd/MM/yyyy hh:mm:ss,ttt
MY objective is to add it manually (I know that data can be exported from database, and imported into Excel, but I want to do it manually) to Excel as a recognizable Date.
How should my SQL sentence be?
I have tried to to it by:
select TO_TIMESTAMP(my_time_utc, 'YYYYMMDD_HH24MISS.FF3') from myTable
but I am only able to obtain:

It never ceases to amaze me how many people confuse these operations.
First you need to convert the varchar 'fake date' to a real date: use to_date for this.
Then you need to convert the date to a varchar for presentation: use to_char for this.
select to_char(to_date(column, 'yyyyMMdd_hhmmss.ttt'), 'dd/MM/yyyy hh:mm:ss,ttt')
from your_table;
should do what you want.
When oracle retrieve a date field from database and show it to you a cast implicit conversion is made. The format pattern for this conversion is set in oracle configuration. Quoting oracle doc:
The default date format for an Oracle date value is derived from the
NLS_DATE_FORMAT and NLS_DATE_LANGUAGE initialization parameters
If you perform query from Excel, your actual query is enougth because excel know date format and is able to read from Oracle with out problems.
If you do a copy-paste from your screen results to excel, then you should cast back date to varchar with your desired format or, of course, change oracle configuration to match your locales.

Update table Error Using Convert Function In SQL Server 2005

I have a table with two columns, all of them are datetime value
Such as, Column A with value ‘07/09/2012 14:13:34’
Now, I want to update column A to yyyymmdd by statement
Update Change_Date
SET A = CONVERT(VARCHAR(8),A,112)
It shows succsessful message but with no effect (no update value to 20120907) in my table Change_Date.

A datetime fields saves a date time. How you see that date time is a result of the tool you're using to inspect the data, whether it is Management Studio, or your own software that's printing something from the database.
I strongly recommend keeping it as a datetime field. This will allow you to do date-related operations, such as subtractions and comparisons. If you want to change how your users see the date, then format your date at the presentation layer.
What's happening in the code you've posted is that you're setting the value of A to the same date that it already is. The fact that you're setting that value by means of a string in another format has no relation, SQL server will always have to parse your string input into a date that it can understand. This is why you're not getting an error message. The operation is working, only it's not changing anything.
You can select the date column in specified format or make a view which selects the column value in yyyymmdd format:
SELECT CONVERT(VARCHAR(8), A, 112) FROM Change_Date
It's because the datatype of the column is DATE or DATETIME and it has specific format. If you want to update the column with specific format, make another column and make its datatype VARCHAR. I believe 112 is yyyymmdd format.
I strongly suggest that you keep it AS IS. Database is the storage of data and not for viewing purposes. It is easy to perform task for dates if your data type is DATETIME or DATE. If for instance you want to retrieve the dates with specific format, that's the time you convert your date.
