I have started writing articles for my blog recently and then realized that google was not indexing it. So I went through some articles on google on how to do SEO. I have seen certain links suggesting meta tags are no longer useful to increase your rank.
From my experiments so far:
I have found, meta tags help for the keywords and nothing more.
Get more page hits and hence increased rank on the search engine by sharing on social networking sites like FB , twitter ,etc.
I would like to know what else can I do to increase. I know its not a one step solution or there is no readymade answer, but I would like to know what has worked for people on this forum :)
Another doubt I had is that google prefers original content as much as possible. I have posted some of my sport articles on my blog and on another website which publishes articles on the same sport but I have given a link to my original blog. But since the sports website has higher page ranking my page on the blog (the articles with same content) can no longer be found on google. Is there any way to stop it? Pls dont tell post on one location only. If there is a solution, I would appreciate that :)
There are a couple of things that are really important for SEO these days: fresh, original content (which you're handling with your blog!) and social signals. You should be promoting your blog on Google+, Facebook and Twitter, as well as participating in relevant communities.
You would be well served to become a regular visitor to a few niche blogs in your area of interest, and try to get some guest blogs posted. Blogs LOVE guest bloggers, and it's a great way to drive direct traffic back to your own blog, as well as increase your SERP placement for specific keywords in your author bio.
Participating in forums and other online discussions is a good way to work on driving traffic to your site. Create good, link-worthy content, and the SERPs will follow.

I'm new here and
This is the first question of mine on Stackoverflow.
Well, my question is regarding the Blog that I have... Now I'm not gonna spam here by providing my link and well, I have a blog and also a fanpage for that on Facebook. If I type my blog's name on google, my blog used to come on top of all the search results, infact I wish that. I've created a fan-page for my blog 2 days ago and now it has around 350 likes. Now, if I search for my blog name on google, Facebook Fanpage comes on the top and 2nd result is my blog!!
How to make my Blog beat my fan-page?? Yeah, my blog has pretty good quality back-links and also it is linked with the facebook and twitter pages..How to bring back my blog to the top again??
And also, My blog has a Twitter page and it has around 180 followers but it is not showing up at all in the Google search..
How to make it appear?? (Ofcourse Twitter is a High PR site but not showing up like Facebook Page).
Thank You!!!
To get your blog back up above the Facebook page you would have to increase Google's trust in your domain. So that would mean posting fresh new relevent content regularly. Getting more backlinks. Not just to the homepage, but also to individual articles as well.
These backlinks also need to come from a diverse range of quality domains.
You are definitely not the only one with this kind of problem. There are numerous people who have an e-commerce website who also sell their product on Amazon.com. Their Amazon.com listing usually outranks their own website and therefor they are losing money.
Outranking a domain like Facebook or Amazon is possible but you won't see results overnight.

As all SEOs know that google is trying its very best to kill SEO and linkbacks are quite a difficult task now. Although content is the key but my boss is still possessed with linkbacks. I can not do directory posting, link exchange, paid linking, web 2.0 and blog commenting as they are spam now. I do not see what other choice i have except forum posting and article posting. Can someone suggest new method to acquire link backs ? I know almost all traditional methods so don't say press release or etc. If you really have something out of the box or not very much common please share.
Google isn't killing SEO, they trying to banish practices that your boss is so intent on doing.
If you want to build a quality reputation - you need to start creating genuine and unique content aimed at your target audience. Research your market, offer your visitors information they want to read and share. Make sure what you create is geared towards Google.
Make it relevant, current, accurate and engaging.
Of course, this all takes time and considerable effort - if you or your boss can't devote the time needed, or at least employ someone to do it for you... the business is going to suffer online.
Buy the links. The majority of online marketing agencies do this as the primary way to increase Google rank.
Or go the natural way and produce so much fine content people will naturally share it.

You could register your website on the Google Webmaster tool :

Not only you'll find a few tips about their SEO, but it will warn you if the Google crawler had problems while visiting your website, which could be the reason for your website to be ranked poorly.
That is true about Meta tags - not relevant now.
There is no simple recipe to increase PageRank and search engines position.
There are huge amount of guides on web that can help. Professional companies offering positioning for payment. And also not every positioning practice is also "fair" and legal.

A site I just started to manage is not banned in Google because I can find the domain in the index, but it gets extremely poor ranking -- almost nowhere to be found.
Does anyone know of a good method for determining how and/or why a site gets a poor ranking in Google. The site I have has been around for a while and is very rich with content relative to "youth sports". Yet you can hardly find it in the Google.
Sorry for asking this question here, but if you have ever posted anything to the Google Help and User forums you;ll find you get no responses or assistance. SO is the only place I can ever get exceptional and timely help.
There is no way to tell for sure as no one knows exactly how pages are ranked. However, we do have a pretty good idea of what many of the ranking factors are so we can be sure do them to help our chances of ranking well. This question at Pro Webmasters is a good start. So is this answer. Once you're sure you got the basics down you need to promote your website in the hopes of getting quality links to your pages. But if you don't have quality content (and what you call quality content may not be what Google and others call quantity content) you're not going to stand much of a chance of ranking well.
Did you use any dirty tricks like white text on white background to contain some false keywords etc.? Google continually discovers these tricks and penalizes them. Cheating doesn't pay off. I don't tell this is your case, but I just want to warn against it, in general.

what is the relation between popularity and competition in SEO field?
i don't mean the formula.i mean the conceptional relation.
i mean can we say more competition cause more popularity or viseversa, more popularity cause more competition?
more competition about a topic means it is general that many sites talk about it and so maybe more people use the web for finding information about that topic and this cause more popularity.
on the other side,if more people search a special term on the web means there is some need for that topic and this cause site owner to talk about that topic to attract more visitors to their site and it cause growing competition.
what is your idea? am i think wrong?
It would be very hard to find any meaningful data on this, but this is how I see it and this is how I suggest these things to any client I visit.
If a subject is popular there will be more competition as it will be linked to frequently, and these pages would obtain link value for these terms within anchor text. Also, if a subject is popular it can be assumed that more people will want to search for it.
Obviously, if there is more competition then it's harder to become the best resource on Google. As it's typical for people to link to the best possible pages the best way to become popular in a field with lots of competition is to make your website the best possible resource for users; over a set period users will visit your website and those that like what they see will link to it.
As a result, the way to become popular in a field with lots of competition is to create the best possible web pages for that given subject. Naturally, there may be lots of competition in areas that aren't popular, but the data is already out there through Google and Yahoo tools to gauge what is popular and what isn't. It's just a matter of building your resources and being patient enough to become popular.
