SSRS Expression Sum Between Numbers - sql

I am seeking assistance with creating a VB expression in SSRS that subtracts SUMS. I have a dataset that has accounts and corresponding money/amount values. I need help creating an expression that sums up the money/amount values from one group of the accounts in a specified range, and then subtracts it from the money/amount total of another range. Specifically:
(Sum(amt) where acct between 40000 and 49999) -
(Sum(amt) where (acct between 50000 and 59999) or (acct between 66000 and 69999)) -
(Sum(amt) where acct between 76000 and 79825) -
(Sum(amt) where acct between 89000 and 90399)
Really need help translating this SQL logic into a VB expression to be used for a textbox in SSRS. Any advice would be extremely helpful! Thanks!

textbox can only capture the first value of the dataset, so if you go to the expression builder for the textbox, you can see there are no fields from the dataset available. But, aggregate functions on dataset fields are available.
So you can create a calculated field to your dataset and add amount values to it with appropriate signs such that the sum of all the values in this calculated field represents your desired solution.
For example, add a new calculated field to your dataset. In the field source, add an appropriate expression like:
=IIF(Fields!acct.Value>=40000 AND Fields!acct.Value<=49999, CInt(Fields!amt.Value),
IIF( (Fields!acct.Value>=50000 AND Fields!acct.Value<=59999) OR
(Fields!acct.Value>=66000 AND Fields!acct.Value<=69999) OR
(Fields!acct.Value>=76000 AND Fields!acct.Value<=79825) OR
(Fields!acct.Value>=89000 AND Fields!acct.Value<=90399),
CInt(0 - Fields!amt.Value), CInt(0)
)
)
This keeps the values between 40000 and 49999 as they are. Makes all values needed to be subtracted into negative values. And everything else you don't wish to consider as 0.
Therefore when you call
Sum(Fields!calcfield.Value, "your dataset name")
from the textbox, you add the values between 40000 and 49999, and subtract values in ranges you wanted.
Please change the expression for the calculated field as per your need, the procedure will work.
You shouldn't go through all the values in a dataset directly from a textbox.

After I posted my answer, wondered if your expected result is get only one date by temperature, In other words, without repeated dates in your result set.
A side note: select distinct([date]),Temperature from Device47A8F where Temperature>25 returns repeated dates since DISTINCT keyword evaluate distinct columns values specified in the SELECT statement, it doesn't return distinct values in a specific column even if you surround it with parenthesis.
Now what brings us here. What I can see in your error is that you are trying to use a table-valued (produces a table with multiple columns) expression in a measure which only accepts scalar-valued (calculate only one value).
Supposing you have a table like this:
Running your SQL query you will get the highlighted in yellow rows:
You can see 01/09/2016 date is repeated. If you want to create a measure you have to define what calculation you want to show for temperature. i.e, average, max or min etc.
In the below expression is being calculated the maximum temperature greater than 25 per date:
MaxTempGreaterThan25 =
CALCULATE ( MAX ( Device47A8F[Temperature] ), Device47A8F[Temperature] > 25 )
In this case the measure MaxTempGreaterThan25 is calculated per date.
If you don't want to produce a measure but a table. In the Power BI Tool bar select Modeling tab and click New Table icon.
Use this expression:
MyTemperatureTable =
FILTER ( Device47A8F, Device47A8F[Temperature] > 25 )
It should produce a new table named MyTemperatureTable like this:
I recommend you learn some basics about DAX, it is pretty different from SQL / T-SQL and there are things you can't do depending on your model and data.

You probably don't need to write any code if your objective is to show the result in a Power BI visual e.g. a table. Power BI naturally aggregates data if the datatype is numeric (e.g. Temperature).
I would just add a Table visual on a Report page and add the Date and Temperature columns to it. Then in Visualizations / Fields / Values I would click the little down-arrow on the Temperature field and set the Aggregation e.g. Maximum. Then in Visualizations / Fields / Filters I would click the little down-arrow on the Temperature field and set the Filter e.g. is greater than: 25
Hard-coded solutions are unlikely to survive the next question from your users e.g. "but what if I want to see Temperature > 24? Or 20? Or 30?"

How to filter columns via MDX

Im new (couple of days to be exact) on Cubes, I have the following problem.
I have a Measure that brings certain amount of data, 100 rows for example. From that data I want to filter numbers that are < 0 from one of its columns.
For example this measure:
[Measures].[Distribution CSU Groups]
Will bring data like this

As you can see in the link, I want to filter those rows that have negative values on the 3rd column.
Is it possible to do this via MDX and how?
Yes filtering is possible in mdx via the following functions:
IIF function
FILTER function
HAVING clause

SSRS Divide Sums from Different Scopes Returns 0

I have a grouped dataset. From the parent group down, the group names are:
Company > Plant > Details. In the end, I want to be able to take the sales of each plant and see what percentage it is of the entire company's sales. Let's say the company has a total sales of $500 and the sales of "Plant A" were $100 and "Plant B" sales were $400. I would image that I would need an expression at the Plant grouping level that was like:
=Sum(Sales)/Sum(Sales, "Company")
And I would get .2 for Plant A and .8 for Plant B. But if I do that, I get 0. I am at a complete loss. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
Additional information:
My exact setup is a little more complex than the example I gave below, but I believe the general idea still holds the same. I have a total of 6 groups:
The circled group is the equivalent of the "Plant" Group in my example. Here is the row group in my tablix for the GroupBy group (the one with the arrow pointing to it).
The expression that is circled in the picture above is the expression in question to get my percentage (right now really just a decimal, not formatted to be a percentage yet).
=sum(Fields!ActualCurrent.Value)/sum(Fields!ActualCurrent.Value, "Company")
Fields!ActualCurrent.Value is the equivalent of "Sales" in my example above. The expression above returns 0 for all groups. But yet, if I change it to
=sum(Fields!ActualCurrent.Value)+sum(Fields!ActualCurrent.Value, "Company")
It will produce the equivalent of $600 for "Plant A" and $900 for "Plant B."
I can't seem to find how it reacts as expected when adding the two sums, but produces 0 when I divide them.
It would be useful to see where are you using that expression to determine what is wrong here, but I think you can use this guide to get your desired result.
Create a tablix like this:
Note I've added Company and Plant fields as groups. Also I've deleted details group. Right click details and select Delete group and set Delete group only option.
Now in the percentage column use the following expression:
=FORMAT(
SUM(Fields!Sales.Value,"Plant")/SUM(Fields!Sales.Value,"Company")
,"P2"
)
The sum of every plan divided by the sum of the whole company group. It is not necessary but I am using FORMAT function to format the float value returned by the expression to percentage format using two decimal places.
It should show something like this:
UPDATE: Try scoping the sum to your specific group: GroupBy
=sum(Fields!ActualCurrent.Value, "GroupBy")/sum(Fields!ActualCurrent.Value, "Company")
UPDATE 2: Format the cell to show decimal digits.
Use thiss expression:
=FORMAT(
sum(Fields!ActualCurrent.Value, "GroupBy")/sum(Fields!ActualCurrent.Value, "Company"),
"F2"
)
It will format the value returned by the expression as a float with two decimal digits.
If you want to show the value in percentage format replace F2 in the expression for P2 (Percentage format with two decimal digits.)

Calculating a Ratio using Column A & Column B - in Powerpivot/MDX/DAX, not in SQL

I have a query to pull clickthrough for a funnel, where if a user hit a page it records as "1", else NULL --

I want to have a column for each ratio, e.g. firstcount/Visits, secondcount/firstcount, etc. as well as a total (finalcount/Visits).
I know this can be done
in an Excel PivotTable by adding a "calculated field"
in SQL by grouping
in PowerPivot by adding a CalculatedColumn, e.g.
=IFERROR(QueryName[finalcount]/QueryName[Visits],0)
BUT I need give the report consumer the option of slicing by just user_type or just user_loc, etc, and excel will tend to ADD the proportions, which won't work b/c
SUM(A/B) != SUM(A)/SUM(B)
Is there a way in DAX/MDX/PowerPivot to add a calculated column/measure, so that it will be calculated as SUM(finalcount)/SUM(Visits), for any user-defined subset of the data (daterange, user type, location, etc.)?
Yes, via calculated measures. calculated columns are for creating values that you want to see on rows/columns/report header...calculated measures are for creating values that you want to see in the values section of a pivot table and can slice/dice by the columns in the model.
The easiest way would be to create 3 calculated "measures" in the calculation area of the powerpivot sheet.
TotalVisits:=SUM(QueryName[visits])
TotalFinalCount:=SUM(QueryName[finalcount])
TotalFinalCount2VisitsRatio:=[TotalFinalCount]/[TotalVisits]
You can then slice the calculated measure [TotalFinalCount2VisitsRatio] by user_type or just user_loc (or whatever) and the value will be calculated correctly. The difference here is that you are explicitly telling the xVelocity engine to SUM-then-DIVIDE. If you create the calculated column, then the engine thinks you want to DIVIDE-then-SUM.
Also, you don't have to break down the measure into 3 separate measures...it's just good practice. If you're interested in learning more, I'd recommend this book...the author is the PowerPivot/DAX guru and the book is very straightforward.

reporting services - sum expression column in tablix

I have a column in my tablix where I manually entered a long nested IF expression (its not in my dataset.) I want to sum the whole column that contains my expression. Is there anyway to do this?
Can I give the tablix column a name, and sum that? Or do I have to take my expressions and add them to my dataset? I rather not do this, because i have 8 datasets, and I would have to add 20 expressions to each one manually.
Assuming your column's expression is like:
=iif(...)
- simply add a similar expression into your summary cell, with sum( ) around it - like so:
=sum(iif(...))
