I'm new to building a rails 3 app with multiple language support. The product requires that the translation team should be able to updated phrases from web interface and see its effects on refresh. They are not concerned about the performance hit this model carries.
So i'm using the gem i18n-active_record and its backend with i18n. The problem is, that translations stored in the db are not fetched on every request. I want the system to query the translations table for each key every time it gets the rendering request.
We're to disable this later when the site is mature enough, but this is an essential feature for now. Any ideas?
You could add in your ApplicationController:
before_filter { I18n.reload! }
I'm afraid I can't really comment on using i18n-active_record, but we run a staging server with the localeapp gem running in daemon mode. This means that translations can be editing via a GUI by a translator and they appear instantly on the staging server. Might be something worth looking into for you.

Testing and Rspec are new to me. Currently I'm using Rspec with Shoulda and Capybara to test my application. It's all fine to test models, controllers, helpers, routing and requests. But what should I exactly test in views? Actually I want to test everything in views, including DOM, but I also don't want to overdone things.
These three things would be a good starting point
Use Capybara to go start at the root of your site, and have it click on links and whatever until it gets to the view you want tested.
Make sure what ever content is supposed to be on the page, is actually showing up on the page. So, if they 'user' went to the Product 1 page, make sure all the Product 1 content is actually there.
If different users see different content, make sure that's working. So, if Admin users see Admin-type buttons, make sure the buttons are they when the user is an Admin, and that aren't when the user isn't.
Those 3 things are a pretty good base. Even the first one is a big win. That will catch any kind of weird view syntax errors you may have accidentally introduced, as the syntax error will fail the test.
At my work we are using RSpec only to do unit testing.
For business testing or behavior testing we are using Cucumber that is much more readable for the business and IT guys.
It's like a contract that you sign with your business or it's like a documentation that you can execute.

I use view specs to verify that the view uses the IDs and classes I depend on in my jQuery code.
And to test different versions of the same page. E.g.:
I would not want to create two full request or feature specs to check that a new user sees welcome message A and a returning user welcome message B. Instead I would pick one of the cases, write a request or feature spec for it, and then a additional view spec that tests both cases.
Rails Test Prescriptions might be interesting for you, since it has a chapter dedicated to view testing.
I'm about to create an application that uses JSON to update its content.
This is how I planned it to work:
When application starts, it checks (with internet connection is available) if the JSON file set on remote server is newer than the one stored localy - if it is then it's downloaded.
Then, the application applies data from that JSON to the content. For example, to the "Contact" information - it applies data like phone numbers etc.
My question is, is it in your opinion, a good technique to update appliactions content?
Does anynone had an experience with building app with this kind of idea?

Of course you can do this. One thing that may lead to a better user experience would be to ask the user for his permission to download new content (if there is something new).
This is a normal thing to do. I have a phonebook app that does exactly this. On a side note, if you need a network class to handle the web-service interaction, see this SO post. I wrote a custom network class that works with AFNetworking.
This is more for experimentation - I am aware that I can do this with --full but I wanted the functionality of namespacing in the app to avoid conflicts
The idea is to have a main app - which handles authentication, common items, admin screens etc

These engines I can pick and choose as I need for whatever kind of app I am building.

I would never want a non-tech/client to add "plugins/engines" - this is purely to entertain point 1.
Issues I am Having...
Running the server on the top level app. Only when accessing content from the engine, (I can see by the error messages) I have a routing problem (root_path undefined or devise routes missing) - the parent application layout is being rendered, I can see it in the extracted source of the error. Progress but no cigar just yet!

I managed to get this working with the following steps:
In my parent app I was mounting the engine in routes.rb
mount PluginName::Engine => '/plugin_name'
I just removed it.
Created an application controller as Ryan Bigg below had stated.
class PluginName::ApplicationController < ApplicationController
...
end
As I wanted to have things name spaced when generating controllers, models, tests so you have to essentially comment out the isolate_namespace PluginName lib\plugin_name\engine.rb when I wanted the gem to be run in the parent app.
It is not yet an ideal solution. off the top off my head, I could use something like:
isolate_namespace PluginName if %w[development testing].include?(Rails.env)
but will have to test if this is practical.

Yes, you can reference the parent application assets just by referencing them in your application like normal:

I'm going to answer your first question with the answer to your second question.
To use the application's layout you will need to modify the ApplicationController in the engine (which is namespaced) and have it inherit from ApplicationController in the engine.
That will then have the controllers for the engine using the layout provided by the engine. I'm doing this in my engine, forem.
One day, this will be covered in the Engines Guide that, at this time of writing, is currently being written.
I'd like to add a CMS and blog to a web app. One that won't get in the way. There's not a lot of content, but enough that we want non-devs to be able to revise pages and probably add and remove them too.
We have a substantial app that can't be touched by the CMS, not a site that we're migrating.
How have you dealt with this situation?

We'll be adding a bug ticketing and support system later too. Probably built into the app.
We'd like the users of the app to be able to comment on pages and blog posts, file tickets, etc. all from their main account, so it seems to make sense to build it into our app, rather than as an extra app. Love to hear war stories on this.

Unobtrusive (Shouldn't interfere with the existing app)
Must not mess with Devise, DeclarativeAuthorization, or Omniauth. We've got extensive user accounts, permissions, authentication mechanisms and groups setup. These must stay.
Lightweight (prefer something dev friendly than feature loaded)

So far rolling our own, or using ComfortableMexicanSofa seems like the bet, but I'd like your thoughts before I spend a few days messing around with it.
I am now rolling my own blog app and I am kind of newbie to Rails 3. Even like that, in 1 week i have a blog with tags, comments, authentication with omniauth, etc.. my advise is: roll your own. I was having the same doubt and looking for pre-made solutions and I decided to start it from zero and just look for plugins for anything i need.
It goes pretty fast if you know already some rails programming and you use the right plugins. This is what i used:
Omniauth to let users be able to autenticate with facebook, twitter etc.. and leave you comments.
rails_admin: it allows you to manage your blog by going to yourapp.com/admin. It uses devise to create an Admin user (you can specify a diferent model name than user to not to mix it with the users from omniauth or from your other app) and if you have the right models and associations between them you can from there create your posts, assign them tags or categories and also delete comments etc.. its all done in an easy way. For the Text Area that you use to introduce the content of your posts you can associate it with the ckeditor just by adding to the rails_admin initializer something like:

And with the ckeditor you can introduce pictures, attach videos, format text, and so on.
Use kaminari for pagination, or you can use will_paginate if you are more used to that.
Using the blueprint framework for styling with css you will save time and have a more standar styling.
Use few jquery lines to insert/delete comments graciously.
And that's all I can remember now. And if it shouldn't interfere with the main app, i would just assign a subdomain for it. So if you go to blog.myapp.com you access to the blog and if you go to myapp.com you access to the app. And you want users from the app to interact with the blog so you should use just one app and have this 2 subdomains pointing at differents parts of the same a app.. take a look at: rails 3 - one app, multiple domains, how implement a different 'root' route for one of the domains?

I am doing my first baby steps with Rails (version 3) now. I'd like to create a simple app catching data from the twitter/instagram/ API. Thankfully there are already gems doing the heavy lifting with connecting to the services, providing the data. Now I wonder what the best-practice is to add this functionality to Rails correctly.
My feeling is the best way is to create a new non-DB Model for each service I want to include and create some scopes, which I will then use in the controller. The scope definition includes the functional code, instantiating and using the twitter/instagram gems to get the web service's data.
Is this model/scope approach right or did I miss something?
In future I might need to cache all the fetched data to handle common API request limitations. Is there any good approach for this?
I'd appreciate your thoughts or examples/resources on this topic.
I think in this situation a standard class would be ok e.g.

I created something similar recently. I created a folder called scripts in my app directory and stuck a class in there called import.rb. Because this file lives within the app directory it automatically has access to the Rails goodness i.e. existing Models etc.
I then set it up as a rails runner script, you run it via teh console from your app's root directory:
rails runner -e development TwitterImport.get_tweets
