So I'm writing tests for a web page, and one of the tests include clicking a link, which opens a new window, do some assertions in that window, and jump back.
To open links I'm using the technique described here.
The weird thing is, when I go through the steps manually (just press all of them one after another) it works fine. But when I try to run the whole test, it either does nothing (no windows open) or it clicks another button (and not the link).
What can be the reason for it working when i do the steps manually, and not when Selenium IDE runs them for me?
To open link, you can use
click | link=link name
selectWindow | windowname
And then perform operation on that window

I'm using Selenium with Robot Framework to write my GUI tests. One of the tests is verifying if, when the user clicks on the Close window/tab button (outside of the webpage), it triggers the alert box before exiting.
I've tried the keywords "Close window" and "Close browser", but both of them ignore the event and close the window. I also tried to close the window with javacript window.close();, but it doesn't work for windows that aren't opened with window.open(); - it is a security measure. I'm using Selenium Grid with different browsers on Linux and Windows, but everytime is failing. Is there a possibility to check this with selenium or I have to use other tools like AutoIT that automate any GUI, not only the browser?
After five days of searching for a solution, I didn't find one that tries to close the page/tab/window and triggers that alert confirmation box.
Instead, I found a workaround that is similar to that and also triggers the necessary alert which is captured by Selenium: click on a link, reopen the same page or go to another one. Like this:

Handle Alert action=DISMISS
I put here action=DISMISS to simply continue with my test on the same page, but if there is need you can change it to something else.
I am writing a test that verifies that a warning to the user before the user opens a document. If the user says that they still would like to open the document, the document opens in an external application (pdf or word).
But now I have an external application over the browser window, and it messes up for other tests.
So, what are the best practices around this kind of issue? Rewrite of the appliction to allow for not opening documents in test?
Added description:
The problem is twofold.
1) It starts processes (word and acrobat) that fills the desctop and requires resources from the test-slave
2) The external process seems to interfer with other tests since (guessing here) it is located over the browser window.
what i understood from your post is, the document(word/pdf) is opening in the browser window hence you are not able to proceed with further steps. If so, you can verify the Title to make sure the document is opened in browser window and can navigate back using below snippet.
driver.navigate().back();

is that once user clicks on open button a new window opens up (Window based application) since you have mentioned PDF or Word.
You can use robot class in such cases, below code snippet will close the current active window:

Make sure you deal with sync issues properly so that intended window is closed instead of AUT.
I'm using the Selenium Client drivers to run tests built in C#. I'm having a problem where the test navigates to a page and clicks on a button in a form with its target set to _blank causing it to open a new window. However the new page being opened returns an XML document and not a typical webpage. Selenium seems to have trouble with this because it hangs when the button is click and the new window opens. No instructions after the click method are executed. The test eventually fails with the error Timed out running command.
Any help/guidance would be appreciated. I've scoured the net but haven't seen anyone running into this particular issue of the page being opened not being a typical webpage which I think is the core of the problem as Selenium can't really manipulate this new opened window. I would post code except that literally all I'm doing is calling the click method on a button which causes a new window to open. Thanks in advance.
To tackle the issue of opening in new window. I typically get url of the link which is to be opened and instead of using selenium.click(), I use:
selenium.open("http://yourwebsite/yourlink")
This helps me to be on the same window only(which avoids opening new window or tab) and when the testing is finished on this page and you want to switch back to original page you can again use:
selenium.open("http://whatever/")
I am executing a simple recorded script in Selenium , in which i just search a page in Google and then click it , but when Run that recorded script it is giving me the "Error [error] Element link not found".

I got the same error message while going through the tutorials online. I found out that the scripts were running too fast for FF to load the links. If you slow down the playback by moving the green button on the Fast-Slow bar to somewhere in the middle the scripts run without any errors.
I guess I know the answer. It might be bcz of any javascript error(you can see that on the status bar at the
Right corner(IE)) or that link element might not be placed correctly in the box(box model).
Here you can use

:selenium.keyPressNative("10") . It presses the enter key.but while selenium is executing this statement
Do not change the focus from your AUT (don't touch the mouse).
In IDE ,just paste the above statement on click().
Well, I don't think you have to slow the speed down. You know the problem is caused by clicking on the link before it is available, so you could add an extra command waitForVisible (e.g. link=Bill Gates: Chairman) before the clickAndWait command.
Im assuming you are using Google instant as there is no "click search button" command, the link is probably not preset because selenium is not waiting for Google instant to respond or the javascript to render the link. If you manually add in a click command to search it should solve it.
My solution is almost the same as Cuongs. Though I change the speed by using a command and change it back afterwards.
Before you click the link, you can set the speed to slow:
Command: setSpeed
Target: 3000
You can change the speed afterwards again to ~1000
I also had same problem. I did two things which fixed the problem. I changed the speed in Selenium IDE from fast to slow (located at top left of IDE), and I minimized the IDE after hitting play button. I guess for people using only one monitor, minimizing Selenium IDE would help the test find the thing it is looking for; for ppl with two screens, opening Selenium IDE in one screen, and opening browser in another screen would be best.

I am having an issue with finding a popup window in some selenium test code. I am looking at the screen on the test runner and there are two IE windows, one of them is the popup and one of them the page which generated the popup. However selecting that window with
SelectWindow("name=SomeName")
fails. Putting a break point in there and running some diagnostics shows that
GetAllWindowNames()
returns only one window. Very odd. I have duplicated the problem in IE, chrome and firefox so I don't think it is browser specific. I am using C# to drive my tests. Any idea how I might solve this issue?

I looked a bit more at how this page actually creates its popup by reloading itself with window.open added to its code. It is rather an odd way to open a popup but I don't see any reason why it isn't valid.
Is there title or some other attribute in popup window's source code? You can locate that using any info you find there. Try to record open popup window in Se IDE and click on something in that popup window. Usually this trick works.
IIRC, there are some situations where SElenium fails to register the window. In this case you can register the window anyway by using the openWindow(ยดยด, ). I think this is described in the explanation of openWindow in Selenijum IDE...
