The structure of my MainStoryboard is:
->Tab Bar Controller -> Navigation Controller -> View Controller (Search)
The behaviour I want to have is that when the user re-selects the Search tab, the UIScrollView on it scrolls to the top. I am unsure how to get the event from the TabBarController, however.
I've been looking at a lot of stuff about UITabBarDelegate, particularly:
- (void)tabBar:(UITabBar *)tabBar didSelectItem:(UITabBarItem *)item
I have, not quite managed to get this to work properly though. I am very unsure about how to go about setting the delegate (assuming that is the way it's done). I've tried hooking it up in IB, but it wouldn't let me. I also tried to get the UITabBar from the AppDelegate (after looking at some seemingly-related answers).
Any pointers will be greatly appreciated (unless they're null).

Don't forget to add "<UITabBarDelegate>" to the "#interface" part of whatever object you're trying to designate as the delegate.
For my own code, I usually use some object that isn't the application delegate (as the app delegate is usually meant for application level events like "application is suspending" or "application is coming back into foreground"). If you add "<UITabBarDelegate>" to your Search view controller, make sure that whatever you do with the "didSelectItem" method is applicable only to the Search view controller. Otherwise instantiate some different object if you want to do actions on various view controllers based on which tab bar item is being displayed.

I've set up a really simple project using storyboards including two views as shown here: http://i.stack.imgur.com/iRx21.png. The navigation can be done by either selecting a cell in the custom table view or hitting the back button labelled with "<<". Everything works fine except the following:
when I switch between the views, every time an instantiation happens. The profiling shows an increasing number of view objects. I would like to keep only one of each view and instantiation should be happen only once. What am I doing wrong? (I'm using ARC.)

You should not link your back button to the parent view controller. This is what causes the new instantiation.
The way to go is to embed the table view into UINavigationController (in IB, choose Editor -> Imbed In -> Navigation Controller. Then change your segue to a Push segue. You can of course hide the navigation bar etc. to make things look exactly as you like. Then, link the back button to the controller with an IBAction and in the handler do a simple
[self.navigationController popViewControllerAnimated:YES];
This would be the appropriate logic of what you are doing. Of course, you can also push the web view modally and then handle the button click with
[self dismissModalViewControllerAnimated:YES];
Hi there and thank you in advice for your help. I have a really strange problem while working with ViewControllers in Xcode4. First of all I have to say that I'm not using storyboards and I prefer to create any UI element programmatically. So I've set a UIButton and I want that, when pressed, it brings me to a new view controller. This is the code I'm using for a button:

This buttons is initialized and allocated in the viewDidLoad method of the RootViewController. I want to switch to the other view controller (in this case SettingsViewController) when I press the button.
The strange thing is that when I press the button, the animation that flips the controllers goes well, but when it finishes I obtain the EXACT same things that I had on the RootViewControllers (same custom views, same buttons, same all!). The question is: what I'm missing?? I have to say that I use ARC (automatic reference counting) so I can't release or dealloc the views and buttons I've created on my RootViewController.
Any help will be appreciated. Thank you all!
Pushing and and modally presenting view controllers does not deallocate the view controller that presented them. It simply adds the additional view controller to the stack. You'll need to implement a callback method so that when the user hits the button to flip back to root view controller, your settings view controller lets the root view controller know what's about to happen so you can call a method you've written to reset the interface back to whatever state you need it at. You may also be able to use viewWillAppear: but that's a little messy.
However, according to the Apple Human Interface Guidelines, the user expects that when they push a view controller or modally present it, the view controller they were on will save state and be exactly the way they left it when they came back. It's disconcerting and annoying when state is not preserved while in a navigation controller context. It is especially annoying when it's modally presented.
Think about this - A user is in a hypothetical Mail app. They start typing out an email and set a font size and a color. They tap on the add attachment button, which brings up a modal view controller that allows them to select a picture. They select the picture and the modal view is dismissed, and in your implementation, the mail composing interface would have reset and the email content would be gone or at the very least the selected font size and color would be back to the default. That's not a good experience.
So I have a viewControllerA, and I want to add another View managed by viewControllerB to it. There is only one UISlider activating a simple action in viewControllerB. It won't crash if I don't touch this UISlider, it will once I use UISlider. I am using ARC. I am using:
[self.view addSubView: viewControllerB.view];
to add viewControllerB to viewControllerA. Am I missing something? Thanks.

The reason why I want this to work is because I have another app that will create a view controller on the spot and add it to anther view. And I don't want to do it modally, because I don't want the new view controller to cover the whole screen. Thanks.
SOLUTION: So I'm now just using the latest ViewController containment API:
[self addChildViewController:viewControllerB];
It works! as long as I added this line, the event will be passed to its own controller and it stopped crashing.
i recommend you, to use the following code
in ViewControllerA.h
#import "ViewControllerB.h"
in ViewControllerA.m (where you want to push the new controller)
ViewControllerB *newController = [[ViewControllerB alloc]init];
[self presentModalViewController:newController animated:YES];
in ViewControllerB.m you will need
[self.presentingViewController dismissModalViewControllerAnimated:YES];
to make it vanish again.
concerning multiple controllers for one open screen (Apple ViewController Programming Guide):
Each custom view controller object you create is responsible for managing exactly
one screen’s worth of content. The one-to-one correspondence between a view controller
and a screen is a very important consideration in the design of your application.
You should not use multiple custom view controllers to manage different portions
of the same screen. Similarly, you should not use a single custom view controller
object to manage multiple screens worth of content.
You should try and avoid the practice of nesting UIViewControllers. While it is technically supported in iOS5, it is ill-advised, for many reasons, including the type of problem that you're having (you have a dangling pointer to a UIViewController, which is why you are crashing).

Although this question is extremely vague, I imagine that you are not keeping a reference to View Controller B, and so when view B tries to interact with it, it causes EXC_BAD_ACCESS.
What's the object that is set as the target for the slider? If it's a EXC_BAD_ADDRESS, then you may not be retaining the target, most probably the view controller for the slider.
I'm trying to put an iAd banner in an app that is based on a UINavigationController (it's not the standard nav-base app proposed by xcode, cause I don't need the table view).
I'd like to place an ADBanner on its bottom, to be always visible, no matter how the user pops and pushes views.
I studied the iAdSuite example in the apple sample code, but, though it's reported among the "best practices", I don't think it's the best practice for what I need. It basically declares an ADBannerView in the app delegate class and then implements the ADBannerViewDelegate methods for every single view the app needs. That means implementing the ADBannerViewDelegate methods over and over again on every view controller class you need! It doesn't seem too smart... :(
I'd rather prefer to have an approach more similar to what Apple itself does in the tab bar based app, where you have a part of the window always occupied by the tab controller and all the views switching above without affecting the tab bar view below.
You can't directly put an ADBannerView along with the nav controller in the app delegate, because ADBanner needs to be placed in a view controller (you get a runtime error otherwise).
I tried to subclass from UIViewController, implementing the ADBannerViewDelegate in this class, and place it in the rootViewController along with a UINavigationController but I'm not having good luck with this approach...
Has anybody found a good, simple way to to this? Any hint?

You can have just one class for ADBannerViewDelegate, and just one instance of ADBanner itself. When the currently active view changes, remove ADBanner from the old view, add it as a subview to the new view.
EDIT:
to clarify, you don't need each view implement the ADBannerViewDelegate. You only should have one class implement it (that class doesn't have to be a view controller for that matter).
You would also need to maintain a somewhere a property that would point to the currently active view (e.g. you can update that property in your Navigation Controller's navigationController:didShowViewController:animated:, or come up with your own protocol for that if your views appear in a more complex way).
Then in your ADBannerViewDelegate you'd just resize the view currently pointed to by that current view property. The actual view doesn't even have to know it has an ad in it ;)
I'm writing a program with a UITableView with and add button in the Navigation Bar which leads to an edit page. When you click on an item in the table, a view (rView) is pushed with information pertaining to that item. This view has an edit button that also leads to the edit page. Is there a way that I could put an if statement for the done button on the edit page that says "if parentViewController is the UITableView to go to rView, else popViewController?" I would assume there is a way to do this, but I'm not sure of the syntax to do so. Thanks
If I understand correctly you have a UINavigationController and push onto it
a UITableView
an "rViewController" (you can't push a view, must be a controller)
an "EditController"
But there is a possibility that step 2 is omitted and you go directly to the edit screen.
Now when the last controller is popped, you want to be able to always go to a "rViewController", even if it's not on the stack.
First of all, the parentViewController is NOT the previous controller on the stack, but rather the UINavigationController itself, so it has nothing to do with the present problem.
The way to do this is by setting the UINavigationController's viewControllers property explicitly with an NSArray. I haven't tried this but this should work:
When a user presses the "add" button, instead of just pushing the edit view controller, do something like:
NSArray* stack = navigationController.viewControllers;
navigationController.viewControllers = [stack arrayByAddingObject:rViewController];
[navigationController pushViewController:editController animated:YES];
(By the way, I would suggest not using names like "rView" except maybe for very short-lived local variables, like in a loop. Using descriptive names is very much part of the Cocoa idiom and will help you a lot in the long run.)
