I am developing a windows installer using WiX 3.0.
The installer dialog, while installing, if minimized and then again maximized, gets stuck in the top left corner of the screen with very little user interface visible from and no buttons/controls are visible.
Is there any way to disable the minimize button from the installer dialog or is there any way that the click event on the minimize button can be captured and handled?
This is a Windows 7 bug, was reported a couple of years ago on the WiX mailing list and comes up repeatedly as new developers find the same bug :)

As far as I know, that is not possible. It could be possible that this problem has been fixed with a newer version of WiX. WiX 3.6 RC is available now and might be worth looking into.

Our desktop ERP built in VB.NET is suddenly not showing scrollbars in DataGrid control on Windows 10 after updates - KB5001337, KB5001406 (May 2021)
The space for the scrollbars appears but there are no up and down arrows visible!
Same application is showing the scrollbars in Datagrid control on Windows 7 PCs/ windows 10 without these updates.
We have multiple Datagrid controls throughout the application so need to find a fix asap
Windows.forms.Datagrid .NET Framework version 3 was used to build in VS 2010
Have already tried -
Settings -> Ease of Access-> Automatically hide scrollbars in Windows (turn off)
Tried running the ERP using Windows 7 compatibility mode
Since our network administrator istn't capable of (de)-installing any updates in a short term view, we have found a workaround for this problem:
You have to activate the XP-Styles in your Visual-Studio application settings and the scrollbars are back!
A small disadvantage is that your application looks a little bit different, but the differnce is only small.
If you uninstall KB5001337 and install KB5001566 this should resolve the issue. Windows found the KB5001566 update automatically after I uninstalled the KB5001337 update.
Yeah I was too facing this issue. I have just uninstalled this update
Got the same issue with the KB5001337 on a windows 10 Version 1909. Updating to Windows 10 Version 20H2 resolved the issue here.
I'm building an installer using Wix 3.11, and I've been using the Advanced UI template in order to get the per-machine/per-user installation choice. My issue is that the welcome screen doesn't show. Or more specifically, the welcome screen flashes at the beginning of the installer and goes straight to the License page without any user input. I've noticed that this doesn't happen on some of the other UI templates.
Has anyone else seen this? I even started a fresh project, and it does the same thing.
WixUI_Advanced doesn't have a welcome screen. The first screen (AdvancedWelcomeEulaDlg) shows the EULA. There's another modeless dialog (PrepareDlg) shown while the AppSearch standard action is running; if that happens quickly, it can appear to flash.
I've got an MSI installer built with Wix, and as is common I want a tickbox on the Finished page to launch the app. I've followed the method here to do this: http://wixtoolset.org/documentation/manual/v3/howtos/ui_and_localization/run_program_after_install.html
It works, but the problem is the application window is hidden by any other windows that are on the screen, when it starts up it doesn't show at the front. I don't know why this is happening? Is there a way to fix this, or do I have to create another custom action to bring the window to the front?
I am experiencing a very weird behavior while running my Active-X control on “Windows 8” OS, and browser “Microsoft Internet-Explorer 10”.
The control:
My Active-X control is very stable product that my company is already distributing for several years between hundreds of happy customers. The control is an ATL custom-draw control, written in C++, and built with “Visual Studio 2008”.
The problem – the drawing disappears:
While I press the link that opens my control for the first time, I can see that my control is being painted gradually (as my data loading is sometimes slow), but eventually all the drawing disappears, leaving a blank white background color where the controls is located.
Using ‘Spy++’ I can see that my control is really there, but all its painting disappear.
If I move the browser or change its size the control will be re-painted, but otherwise it is simply not visible.
I tried to debug this problem and find out who is erasing my drawing.
I came up with the following technique:
Using WinDBG I added breakpoints at ‘user32.dll’ DLL on the following methods: user32!InvalidateRect, user32!InvalidateRgn, user32!FillRect,
I defined these methods to only show stack and continue with to run,
I ran the above problematic scenario,
When the problem happens I am trying to view who called ‘Invalidate’ or ‘FillRect’,
Since all this happens very quickly I am using the ‘Print Screen’ button to freeze the moment
After doing this several times I find that exactly at the time my control disappears the following stack calls ‘user32!FillRect’:
user32!FillRect

MSHTML!CMarkup::SetInteractiveInternal+0x428

MSHTML!GlobalWndProc+0xd7

KERNEL32!BaseThreadInitThunk+0xe

This is consistent.
When examining this stack I found that this message belongs to a window of class Internet Explorer_Hidden, which is window of size zero (0x0), but with a WS_VISIBLE style. This window belongs to the browser.
Does anyone know this phenomenon?
Is it possible that the browser hidden window is causing this problem?
Could you recommend on other approach to try and hunt the stack that is erasing my drawing?
Many thanks for any hint!

Conclusion:
The bug was in Microsoft Internet Explorer 10
I used Microsoft Support service to farther investigate this problem. Enclosed here are the findings:
Microsoft Support viewed the version of my IE (Internet Explorer) and suggested to first upgrade IE to its latest patch.
As it happens, the machine I was working on was not setup to be automatically updated by the Windows Update service for some time. As part of upgrading IE I had to first update windows using Windows Update service to its latest patches.
During the process of Windows Update the Microsoft Internet Explorer 10 was automatically updated to its latest patch.
Once IE updated the problem disappeared.
In addition, the ActiveX GUI load process became much faster.
The old version of Microsoft Internet Explorer 10, which caused the problem:
Version: 10.0.9200.16384
Update Versions: RTM (KB2718695)
The new version of Microsoft Internet Explorer 10, which solved the problem:
Version: 10.0.9200.16635
Update Versions: 10.0.7 (KB2846071)
Now all is working as expected.
Thanks, Pazo
I want to move back/forward between editor tabs, using the two additional ("virtual") mouse buttons I have (RAZER DEATHADDER BLACK).
In Eclipse it's possible by default.
In IDEA I go to File->Settings->Keymap->Main menu->Window->Editor Tabs.
There I have Select Next Tab with the deault Alt+Right shortcut.
Then I open the Add Mouse Shortcut.
In that dialog I try to assign the back button of my mouse but without success. It doesn't react at all.
Anyway, googling a bit I've found this thread. I quote Alexey Gopachenko which seems to be an employee of IntelliJ:
As stated above - we can't support buttons if JDK on your platform
does not support them - and obviously it does not.
Anyway, that is totally wrong. My platform does support these keys - I actually work with them, on the same platform, on Eclipse and any other app, so it's IDEA who ignores them.
I'd appriciate a solution - how do I assign these back/forward mouse buttons?
UPDATE #1
I've found out that IDEA uses its own JAVA distribution (C:\Program Files (x86)\JetBrains\IntelliJ IDEA 11.1.4\jre on Windows 7), instead of the system's one - WHY?!
I'm almost SURE that is the reason I cannot use extended mouse buttons.
I've tried to trick IDEA by creating a custom Windows shortcut. Didn't work. I've also tried to create a SYMLINK in windows to my other, system-wide JRE distribution. Didn't work as well.
If someone come up with an idea on how to make it work with the system's JRE instead of its own - I think that'd solve the issue.
UPDATE #2
The above update #1 is not the issue.
I also had the same problem under OS X El Capitan. I just tried to add a new Keyboard-Shortcut and pressed than the Button 4 on the mouse and this worked.
Back/Forward mouse shortcuts work fine for me with Razer Mamba mouse, for example Back action is assigned to Button4 Click and I can confirm that it is recognized in this dialog when I click on the Click Pad area:
If it doesn't work with your mouse for some reason, you can try to workaround the problem using the Razer Configurator macro or key assignments:
Use the assigned key in IDEA keymap settings instead of the mouse shortcut.
Note that Eclipse is SWT based while IDEA is Swing based, so mouse event management is completely different. If JDK cannot recognize your device button clicks, it will not work in any Java Swing applications (NetBeans, JEdit, etc). In some cases running IDEA under a more recent JDK version may help (if support for your device was added in the newer JDK release).
I'm experiencing the exact same thing suddenly.
I realized my most recent change was to start using idea64.exe rather than idea.exe.
I switched back, and my mouse buttons are working fine again.
So, while this is not a complete answer, it seems as if it has something to do with the 64-bit version.
If the Razer driver's button mapping feature doesn't allow different mappings for a particular program, you can just assign the buttons to the mouse button number choices (mouse button 4 / mouse button 5) and then install a third party app that does support mappings for particular programs, e.g. https://superuser.com/questions/562972/how-to-map-bind-mouse-button-as-keyboard-button-in-windows-7
This question helped me although I have a Logitech Marathon Mouse M705, so I thought that I would share the solution in case other Logitech owners was in search for this.
I have a similar problem with a Logitech mouse and idea64.exe
Fortunately their SetPoint software allows for program specific settings.
This setting will have to be deleted and then reconfigured whenever you update IntelliJ and get a new idea64.exe :-)
I am experiencing a very similar problem and wanted to share my findings. I just bought a new Logitech M705 mouse. Within intelli-j the scroll right and scroll left buttons do not work. The forward and backward buttons also do not work.
I typically run intelli-j as administrator because I need higher privileges to run various tomcat services. When logging in as that user (rather than right clicking and selecting run as admin) all the buttons work! Also, when running as my normal user all the buttons work.
Also very curious is that I have an older generation Logitech mouse (same model, M705). This mouse has no problems with the scroll buttons and forward-back.
My solution for now is to use intelli-j as the user I am logged in as.
Check out this little tutorial from BetterTouchTool here. Basically for some mice (like Logitech ones) using the settings application they come with you can map default button actions to clicks and in doing so set a button number and use it as normal.
This works for my Logitech Performance MX mouse.
You can add mouse shortcuts, just click on an action in keymap and add mouse shortcut.
Alternatively Ctrl+Tab brings up switcher, which may be less clicks to navigate.
