I am trying to build a generic activemq command line to tool for monitoring purposes.
It uses JMX connection to get the information.
To get the information i need the broker name to be used in the ObjectName constructor.
(e.g ObjectName activeMQ = new ObjectName("org.apache.activemq:BrokerName=localhost,Type=Queue,Destination=" + queueName);)
I am unable to run it if the broker name is not known.
Is there a way i can determine the activemq broker name programmatically?

You could use a wildcard in the JMS query to get all brokers and then go from there.

I have a requirement to create a bridge between a Queue in ActiveMQ and a Queue in Solace. When ever there is a message in ActiveMQ Queue it should automatically get transferred to SolaceQ.
I'm struggling to find the steps for this configuration. I have ActiveMQ installed on my local machine. Request you to please throw some light on this.

ActiveMQ broker setup:
Broker is running on machine: hostA
Clients from different host can connect to my broker instance running on hostA, there can be any number of client from any host.
Is there a way to find out how many clients are connected to broker and also list which tell me how many connection from each host is there to my broker.
I want to do this without making assumption about number of hosts.
I can do this by using lsof command and some parsing over output, but I am in situation where I can not use this.
Is there any feature provided by ActiveMQ command line utility activemq-admin.
You can get to pretty much any Mbean attribute ActiveMQ exposes via the activemq-admin. There are no attributes or operations that give you a quick count of connections from specific clients. You will have to do some work on your end to get all the details you want, but all the raw data is there.
Examples:
Broker Stats:
activemq-admin query --objname type=Broker,brokerName=localhost
Connection Stats
activemq-admin query --objname type=Broker,brokerName=localhost,connector=clientConnectors,connectorName=<transport connector name>,connectionViewType=clientId,connectionName=*

You can get the object name (or example sytax) from JMX (using jconsole or visual vm for example) from the MBeanInfo. Each object name wills stat something like org.apache.activemq:type. For the script, remove the "org.apache.activemq:" and you should be in business for any thing you need from JMX via the script.
I think you may also look into using Jolokia with your broker. Although not compatible with the activemq-admin script, you can reach everything you can from the activemq-admin script, but also have access to all of the operations. In the past I've heavily used the activemq-admin script for local monitoring/command line administration of the broker, but have started converting everything to hit the Jolokia service. But again, activemq-admin will give you a way to access what you are looking for here.
Is it possible to use federations or shovels to mirror the creation of exchanges and queues on one server to another ?
All the examples I've seen of using shovels and federations use exchanges and queues that already exist on the servers. What I want to do is create an exchange on server A and have a federation or shovel re-create it on Server B then start to send messages to it.
If this cannot be done with a federation or shovel is there anyway of achieving this without using clustering, the connection between the two servers is not consistent so clustering isn't possible.

You can use the federation plug-in.
It supports the exchange exchange and the queue federation, in order to mirror the queues and exchanges you can configure a policies ( using the management console or command line),for example with this parameters:
Name: my_policy
Pattern: ^mirr\. <---- mirror exchanges and queues with prefix “mirr.”
Definition: federation-upstream-set:all
you can apply the configuration for exchanges and queues, as:
The pattern policy supports regular expression
In this way each new or old exchange or queue that starts with the prefix “mirr.” will be mirrored to the other broker.
I think this could solve your problem.
Unfortunately in this way it is not possible to do this, because the connection is a point-to-point connection. You have to link a exchange with a remote exchange and in your topology this cant be created automatically.
I had also this problem in the past. And how i resolved the problem was over a business logic side. If there was a need for a new Exchange/Queue "on the fly", my data input gateway recognized this and created on the local and on the remote exchange the new exchange and queues with the connection, before the message was sent to RabbitMQ.
I am confused about the function of Apache ActiveMQ.

So I use it this way (environment: Windows 7): I start the bin/activemq.bat, then it works.
My question is: Does this mean I start a server on my machine? When I initialize the ActiveMQConnectionFactory, the broker URL is tcp://localhost:61616. But what if I want my machine to serve as a server and another machine to connect to my server?
Yes, you can use the primary box as a server and have consumers/subscribers running on other boxes (which will need to connect to the server - you will need to specify the server hostname & port for the connection to be established) - once in place, the messages on the server (topic or queue) can be consumed by the clients.
If you one have one producer and one consumer, you can look into using queues - if you have more than one consumer/subscriber, you can look into setting up a topic to which the consumers will subscribe to. Messages need to be inserted to the topic/queue as needed.
You can specify the server information in your code or preferably in the config file.

Also, you can choose to persist your messages or not based on your use case. Kaha DB is the preferred route (specially if performance is of concern).

I'm working on a project where I have several war files inside a tomcat 7 have to communicate with a single embedded activeMQ (5.5.1) broker inside the same Tomcat.
I'm wondering what was the best practice to manage this and how to start and stop the broker properly.
Actually I try tu use a global JNDI entry in server.xml and in each war gets my activemq connection with a lookup. The first connection to the broker implicitly starts it. But with this method I run into various problems like instance already existing or locks in data store.
Should I use instead an additional war which uses a BrokerFactory to start the broker explicitly? In this case how to make sure that this war executes first in Tomcat ? And how do I stop my broker and where?

If you are using the VM transport and wish to explicitly configure an
Embedded Broker there is a chance that you could create the JMS
connections first before the broker starts up. Currently ActiveMQ will
auto-create a broker if you use the VM transport and there is not one
already configured. (In 5.2 it is possible to use the waitForStart and
create=false options for the connection uri)
So to work around this if you are using Spring you may wish to use the
depends-on attribute so that your JMS ConnectionFactory depends on the
embedded broker to avoid this happening. e.g.
