PLS-00103, in Trigger - sql

create or replace TRIGGER log_worlds BEFORE UPDATE OR INSERT ON worlds
DECLARE
ac VARCHAR2(50);
tab VARCHAR2(50);
world VARCHAR2(50);
BEGIN
IF UPDATING THEN
ac:='Aktualizacja';
END IF;
IF INSERTING THEN
ac:='Nowe';
END IF;
tab:='WORLDS';
world:='world_';
world:=world||cast(NEW_WORLD.NEXTVAL as VARCHAR2(10));
INSERT INTO log(ACTION_DATE,ACTION,TAB_NAME,ADDED_WORLD) VALUES(SYSDATE,ac,tab,world);
INSERT INTO worlds(WORLD_NAME) VALUES(world);
END;
Can someone help me with this,error information is about line 14? This trigger is supposed to add new values to the log table and to change the primary key value of the worlds table when my APEX application issues DML against the table.

the error you get suggests some syntax error in your code which I can't immediately find. However I would expect another error becuase Oracle won't allow you do execute DML statements (select, insert, update, delete) inside of a trigger on the same table as the trigger is on. Your trigger is on table worlds, so you are not allowed to insert a record into table worlds inside the trigger.

I think it's this line here:
world:=world||cast(NEW_WORLD.NEXTVAL as VARCHAR2(10));
If you replace it with:
world := world||to_char(NEW_WORLD.NEXTVAL);
it should work.
Btw: directly using a nextval call in an assignment does not work on versions prior to 11.x (not sure about the value of x here).
In 10.x you would need to declare a variable and then use:
SELECT to_char(new_world.nextval)
into world_num;
world := world || world_num;

The immediate syntax error is that assuming NEW_WORLD is a sequence you've created, you would need to do something like
SELECT world ||
cast( new_world.nextval as varchar2(10) )
INTO world
FROM dual;
rather than directly referencing the sequence in your CAST.
It's far from clear to me what your trigger is supposed to be doing though. It is, at a minimum, going to generate an infinite loop. Every INSERT on WORLDS is going to cause the trigger to fire which will generate an INSERT on WORLDS which will cause the trigger to fire, etc. Oracle will eventually raise an error when you exceed the maximum recursion depth. Perhaps you intended this to be a row-level trigger rather than a statement-level trigger that changed the value of :new.world_name? If that's the case, you'd probably want something like
create or replace TRIGGER log_worlds
BEFORE UPDATE OR INSERT ON worlds
FOR EACH ROW
DECLARE
ac VARCHAR2(50);
tab VARCHAR2(50);
world VARCHAR2(50);
BEGIN
IF UPDATING THEN
ac:='Aktualizacja';
END IF;
IF INSERTING THEN
ac:='Nowe';
END IF;
tab:='WORLDS';
world:='world_';
select world || cast(new_world.nextval as varchar2(10)
into world
from dual;
INSERT INTO log(ACTION_DATE,ACTION,TAB_NAME,ADDED_WORLD)
VALUES(SYSDATE,ac,tab,world);
:new.world_name := world;
END;
This assumes that world_name is not actually the primary key. If world_name is the primary key then it would make no sense to modify the primary key value when a row is updated-- you would only want to potentially assign the primary key if you are doing an INSERT.

Use v('APP_USER') as default value for column in Oracle Apex

I am trying to use v('APP_USER') as default value for a column. I get null when I use it in select like
select v('APP_USER') from dual;
But when I use it as default in column, like below, I am getting error.
create table test_table (col_1 varchar2(50) default NVL(v('APP_USER'), SYS_CONTEXT('USERENV','OS_USER')));
Error
create table test_table (col_1 varchar2(50) default NVL(v('APP_USER'), SYS_CONTEXT('USERENV','OS_USER')))

Can anyone explain this or have a turnaround for this ??
There are other options than V('APP_USER'). Since Apex 5, the APP_USER is stored in the sys_context and that is a lot more performant than the V() function. It is available as SYS_CONTEXT('APEX$SESSION','APP_USER').
It also works as a default value for tables:
create table test_table
(col_1 VARCHAR2(100) DEFAULT SYS_CONTEXT('APEX$SESSION','APP_USER'));
Table TEST_TABLE created.
That being said, the best practice for audit columns is a trigger that populates the the 4 audit columns (as #Littlefoot suggested). Have a look at quicksql (under SQL Workshop > Utilities or on livesql.oracle.com). You can have it generate the triggers for you if you set "include Audit columns" and "Apex Enabled". An example of such a generated trigger is:
create or replace trigger employees_biu
before insert or update
on employees
for each row
begin
if inserting then
:new.created := sysdate;
:new.created_by := nvl(sys_context('APEX$SESSION','APP_USER'),user);
end if;
:new.updated := sysdate;
:new.updated_by := nvl(sys_context('APEX$SESSION','APP_USER'),user);
end employees_biu;
/
One option is to use a database trigger, e.g.
CREATE OR REPLACE TRIGGER trg_biu_test
BEFORE INSERT OR UPDATE ON test
FOR EACH ROW
BEGIN
:new.col1 := v ('APP_USER');
END;

Getting "invalid NEW or OLD specification" message when I try to run this

The entire question I'm trying to answer is:
Utilize the travel anywhere database to create a database trigger "hotel_kids_rule" to enforce a business rule. when inserting a hotel_reservation, if the num_kids value is more than zero, then assign the bed_type DQ to the reservation. save the trigger source as a script file.
For example, the trigger will change the bed_type for the following insert statement.
insert into hotel_reservation (reserve_no,reserve_date,arrival_date,dep_date,num_adults,num_kids,customer_id,hotel_id,bed_type,rooms)
values(hotel_reserve_sequence.nextval,sysdate,sysdate+5,sysdate+7,1,2,101,19,'DT',1);
For example, the trigger will not change the bed_type for the following insert statement.
insert into hotel_reservation (reserve_no,reserve_date,arrival_date,dep_date,num_adults,num_kids,customer_id,hotel_id,bed_type,rooms)
values(hotel_reserve_sequence.nextval,sysdate,sysdate+5,sysdate+7,2,0,102,20,'DT',1);
This is what I have so far:
create or replace trigger hotel_kids_rule
after insert or update on hotel_reservation
for each row
when (num_kids > 0)
declare
new_bed_type varchar2(20);
new_bed_type='DQ'
begin
new.bed_type=new_bed_type;
end;
Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!
I think you want a before trigger, so you can set the new value before it is written. Also, the way you access new is not ok: within the trigger code, you need :new.bed_type; in the when condition, you want new.num_kids.
This should work:
create or replace trigger hotel_kids_rule
before insert or update on hotel_reservation
for each row
when (new.num_kids > 0)
begin
:new.bed_type := 'DQ';
end;
/
Here is a small demo.
The assignment of your variable needs to be inside the actual code block. And the assignment operator is := in PL/SQL, not =. If you want the trigger to change anything you also need to create it as a BEFORE trigger:
create or replace trigger hotel_kids_rule
before insert or update on hotel_reservation
for each row
when (new.num_kids > 0)
declare
new_bed_type varchar2(20);
begin
new_bed_type := 'DQ';
:new.bed_type := new_bed_type;
end;
Note that the new record in the when condition is used without the colon : while inside the code block it needs to be referenced with the colon.
Alternatively initialize the variable when declaring it:
declare
new_bed_type varchar2(20) := 'DQ';
begin
:new.bed_type := new_bed_type;
end;
Or even simpler without any intermediate variable.
begin
:new.bed_type := 'DQ';
end;

Oracle trigger error ORA-04091

I get an error (ORA-04091: table DBPROJEKT_AKTIENDEPOT.AKTIE is mutating, trigger/function may not see it) when executing my trigger:
CREATE OR REPLACE TRIGGER Aktien_Bilanz_Berechnung
AFTER
INSERT OR UPDATE OF TAGESKURS
OR INSERT OR UPDATE OF WERT_BEIM_EINKAUF
ON AKTIE
FOR EACH ROW
DECLARE
bfr number;
Begin
bfr := :new.TAGESKURS - :new.WERT_BEIM_EINKAUF;
UPDATE AKTIE
SET BILANZ = TAGESKURS - WERT_BEIM_EINKAUF;
IF bfr < -50
THEN
DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE('ACHTUNG: The value (Nr: '||:new.AKTIEN_NR||') is very low!');
END IF;
END;
I want to check the value "BILANZ" after calculating it, wether it is under -50.
Do you have any idea why this error is thrown?
Thanks for any help!
There are several issues here:
Oracle does not allow you to perform a SELECT/INSERT/UPDATE/DELETE against a table within a row trigger defined on that table or any code called from such a trigger, which is why an error occurred at run time. There are ways to work around this - for example, you can read my answers to this question and this question - but in general you will have to avoid accessing the table on which a row trigger is defined from within the trigger.
The calculation which is being performed in this trigger is what is referred to as business logic and should not be performed in a trigger. Putting logic such as this in a trigger, no matter how convenient it may seem to be, will end up being very confusing to anyone who has to maintain this code because the value of BILANZ is changed where someone who is reading the application code's INSERT or UPDATE statement can't see it. This calculation should be performed in the INSERT or UPDATE statement, not in a trigger. It considered good practice to define a procedure to perform INSERT/UPDATE/DELETE operations on a table so that all such calculations can be captured in one place, instead of being spread out throughout your code base.
Within a BEFORE ROW trigger you can modify the values of the fields in the :NEW row variable to change values before they're written to the database. There are times that this is acceptable, such as when setting columns which track when and by whom a row was last changed, but in general it's considered a bad idea.
Best of luck.
You are modifying the table with the trigger. Use a before update trigger:
CREATE OR REPLACE TRIGGER Aktien_Bilanz_Berechnung
BEFORE INSERT OR UPDATE OF TAGESKURS OR INSERT OR UPDATE OF WERT_BEIM_EINKAUF
ON AKTIE
FOR EACH ROW
DECLARE
v_bfr number;
BEGIN
v_bfr := :new.TAGESKURS - :new.WERT_BEIM_EINKAUF;
:new.BILANZ := v_bfr;
IF v_bfr < -50 THEN
Raise_Application_Error(-20456,'ACHTUNG: The value (Nr: '|| :new.AKTIEN_NR || ') is very low!');
END IF;
END;

Count(*) not working properly

I create the trigger A1 so that an article with a certain type, that is 'Bert' cannot be added more than once and it can have only 1 in the stock.
However, although i create the trigger, i can still add an article with the type 'Bert'. Somehow, the count returns '0' but when i run the same sql statement, it returns the correct number. It also starts counting properly if I drop the trigger and re-add it. Any ideas what might be going wrong?
TRIGGER A1 BEFORE INSERT ON mytable
FOR EACH ROW
DECLARE
l_count NUMBER;
PRAGMA AUTONOMOUS_TRANSACTION;
BEGIN
SELECT COUNT(*) INTO l_count FROM mytable WHERE article = :new.article;
dbms_output.put_line('Count: ' || l_count);
IF l_count >0 THEN
IF(:new.TYPEB = 'Bert') THEN
dbms_output.put_line('article already exists!');
ROLLBACK;
END IF;
ELSIF (:new.TYPEB = 'Bert' AND :new.stock_count>1) THEN
dbms_output.put_line('stock cannot have more than 1 of this article with type Bert');
ROLLBACK;
END IF;
END;
This is the insert statement I use:
INSERT INTO mytable VALUES('Chip',1,9,1,'Bert');
A couple of points. First, you are misusing the autonomous transaction pragma. It is meant for separate transactions you need to commit or rollback independently of the main transaction. You are using it to rollback the main transaction -- and you never commit if there is no error.
And those "unforeseen consequences" someone mentioned? One of them is that your count always returns 0. So remove the pragma both because it is being misused and so the count will return a proper value.
Another thing is don't have commits or rollbacks within triggers. Raise an error and let the controlling code do what it needs to do. I know the rollbacks were because of the pragma. Just don't forget to remove them when you remove the pragma.
The following trigger works for me:
CREATE OR REPLACE TRIGGER trg_mytable_biu
BEFORE INSERT OR UPDATE ON mytable
FOR EACH ROW
WHEN (NEW.TYPEB = 'Bert') -- Don't even execute unless this is Bert
DECLARE
L_COUNT NUMBER;
BEGIN
SELECT COUNT(*) INTO L_COUNT
FROM MYTABLE
WHERE ARTICLE = :NEW.ARTICLE
AND TYPEB = :NEW.TYPEB;
IF L_COUNT > 0 THEN
RAISE_APPLICATION_ERROR( -20001, 'Bert already exists!' );
ELSIF :NEW.STOCK_COUNT > 1 THEN
RAISE_APPLICATION_ERROR( -20001, 'Can''t insert more than one Bert!' );
END IF;
END;
However, it's not a good idea for a trigger on a table to separately access that table. Usually the system won't even allow it -- this trigger won't execute at all if changed to "after". If it is allowed to execute, one can never be sure of the results obtained -- as you already found out. Actually, I'm a little surprised the trigger above works. I would feel uneasy using it in a real database.
The best option when a trigger must access the target table is to hide the table behind a view and write an "instead of" trigger on the view. That trigger can access the table all it wants.
You need to do an AFTER trigger, not a BEFORE trigger. Doing a count(*) "BEFORE" the insert occurs results in zero rows because the data hasn't been inserted yet.

History table referencing other values in the table / accessing package table variables

I have a system for tracking usage of computers in a lab. Slightly simplified, it works out to:
Machines are associated with a lab.
Machines have a binary logged_in state, which gets updated automatically when users log in and out.
There is a view keyed on the lab which gathers the total number of seats associated with the lab, and the current number in use for that lab.
What I would like to do is add a history or audit table, which would track changes to lab population over time. I had a trigger on the machine table to store the time and the total lab population in my lab history table every time the machine table changed. The problem is that, in order to get the new total for the lab, I have to examine the other values in the machine table. This results in a table mutating error.
Some things I found on here and elsewhere suggested that I should create a package to track the labs being changed. Use a before trigger to clear the list, a row trigger to store each labid being changed, and an after trigger to update the history table with new values for only those labs whose ids are in the list. I've tried that, but can't figure out how to access the values I've stored in the package table (or even if it is storing them properly in the first place.) As will no doubt be obvious, I'm unfamiliar with PL/SQL packages and table variables - the whole syntax of referring to table entries like arrays struck me as vaguely heretical though incredibly useful if it works. So most of the below is just copied and adapted from other solutions I've found, but they didn't stretch as far as how to actually use my table of changed lablocids, assuming its being created properly in the first place. The following simply tells me that pg_machine_in_use_pkg.changedlablocids does not exist when I try to compile the final trigger.
create or replace package labstats_adm.pg_machine_in_use_pkg
as
type arr is table of number index by binary_integer;
changedlablocids arr;
empty arr;
end;
/
create or replace trigger labstats_adm.pg_machine_in_use_init
before insert or update
on labstats_adm.pg_machine
begin
-- begin each update with a blank list of changed lablocids
pg_machine_in_use_pkg.changedlablocids := pg_machine_in_use_pkg.empty;
end;
/
--
create or replace trigger labstats_adm.pg_machine_in_use_update
after insert or update of in_use,lablocid
on labstats_adm.pg_machine
for each row
begin
-- record lablocids - old and new - of changed machines
if :new.lablocid is not null then
pg_machine_in_use_pkg.changedlablocids( pg_machine_in_use_pkg.changedlablocids.count+1 ) := :new.lablocid;
end if;
if :old.lablocid is not null and :old.lablocid != :new.lablocid then
pg_machine_in_use_pkg.changedlablocids( pg_machine_in_use_pkg.changedlablocids.count+1 ) := :old.lablocid;
end if;
end;
create or replace trigger labstats_adm.pg_machine_lab_history
after insert or update of in_use,lablocid
on labstats_adm.pg_machine
begin
-- for each lablocation we just logged a change to, update that labs history
insert into labstats_adm.pg_lab_history (labid, time, total_seats, used_seats)
select labid, systimestamp, total_seats, used_seats
from labstats_adm.lab_usage
where labid in (
select distinct labid from pg_machine_in_use_pkg.changedlablocids
);
end;
/
On the other hand, if there is a better overall approach than the package, I'm all ears.
After some reflection I've got to go with #tbone on this one. In my experience a history table should be a copy of the data in the "real" table with fields added to show when particular 'version' of the data shown by a row in the history table was in effect. So if the "real" table is something like
CREATE TABLE REAL_TABLE
(ID_REAL_TABLE NUMBER PRIMARY KEY,
COL2 NUMBER,
COL3 VARCHAR2(50));
then I'd create the history table as
CREATE TABLE HIST_TABLE
(ID_HIST_TABLE NUMBER PRIMARY KEY
ID_REAL_TABLE NUMBER,
COL2 NUMBER,
COL3 VARCHAR2(50),
EFFECTIVE_START_DT TIMESTAMP(9) NOT NULL,
EFFECTIVE_END_DT TIMESTAMP(9));
and I'd have the following triggers to get everything populated:
CREATE TRIGGER REAL_TABLE_BI
BEFORE INSERT ON REAL_TABLE
REFERENCING OLD AS OLD
NEW AS NEW
FOR EACH ROW
BEGIN
IF :NEW.ID_REAL_TABLE IS NULL THEN
:NEW.ID_REAL_TABLE := REAL_TABLE_SEQUENCE.NEXTVAL;
END IF;
END REAL_TABLE_BI;
CREATE TRIGGER HIST_TABLE_BI
BEFORE INSERT ON HIST_TABLE
FOR EACH ROW
BEGIN
IF :NEW.ID_HIST_TABLE IS NULL THEN
:NEW.ID_HIST_TABLE := HIST_TABLE_SEQUENCE.NEXTVAL;
END IF;
END HIST_TABLE_BI;
CREATE TRIGGER REAL_TABLE_AIUD
AFTER INSERT OR UPDATE OR DELETE ON REAL_TABLE
FOR EACH ROW
DECLARE
tsEffective_start_date TIMESTAMP(9) := SYSTIMESTAMP;
tsEffective_end_date TIMESTAMP(9) := dtEffective_start_date - INTERVAL '0.000000001' SECOND;
BEGIN
IF UPDATING OR DELETING THEN
UPDATE HIST_TABLE
SET EFFECTIVE_END_DATE := tsEffective_end_date
WHERE ID_REAL_TABLE = :NEW.ID_REAL_TABLE AND
EFFECTIVE_END_DATE IS NULL;
END IF;
IF INSERTING OR UPDATING THEN
INSERT INTO HIST_TABLE (ID_REAL_TABLE, COL2, COL3, EFFECTIVE_START_DATE)
VALUES (:NEW.ID_REAL_TABLE, :NEW.COL2, :NEW.COL3, tsEffective_start_date);
END IF;
END REAL_TABLE_AIUD;
Using this method the "history" table has all historical versions of the data in the "real" table PLUS a complete copy of the "current" data from the "real" table; this is done to simplify queries which need to report on all versions of the data in the table up to and including present values.
The advantage of using triggers to do all this is that the maintenance of the primary keys and the history table becomes automatic and can't be easily circumvented or forgotten.
Share and enjoy.
Sorry so slow to get back; its taken me a bit of fiddling, and I haven't had a lot of time to work on it.
Thanks to Bob Jarvis for pointing me at the compound triggers, which cleaned up the overall structure significantly. After that, I just had to sanitise the way I'm getting values back out of my table variable. On the odd chance that someone else stumbles over this looking for the answer to the same problem, I'll post my final solution here:
create or replace
trigger pg_machine_in_use_update
for insert or update or delete of in_use,lablocid
on labstats_adm.pg_machine
compound trigger
type arr is table of number index by binary_integer;
changedlabids arr;
idx binary_integer;
after each row is
newlabid labstats_adm.pg_labs.labid%TYPE;
oldlabid labstats_adm.pg_labs.labid%TYPE;
begin
-- store the labids of any changed locations
-- PL/SQL does not like us testing for the existence of something that isn't there, so just set it twice if necessary
if ( :new.lablocid is not null ) then
select labid into newlabid from labstats_adm.pg_lablocation where lablocid = :new.lablocid;
changedlabids( newlabid ) := 1;
end if;
if ( :old.lablocid is not null ) then
select labid into oldlabid from labstats_adm.pg_lablocation where lablocid = :old.lablocid;
changedlabids( oldlabid ) := 1;
end if;
end after each row;
after statement is
begin
idx := changedlabids.FIRST;
while idx is not null loop
insert into labstats_adm.pg_lab_history (labid, time, total_seats, used_seats)
select labid, systimestamp, total_seats, used_seats
from labstats_adm.lab_usage
where labid = idx;
idx := changedlabids.NEXT(idx);
end loop;
end after statement;
end pg_machine_in_use_update;
