Hi,
I have a WCF service hosted in IIS that has the following binding config :
<binding name="netTcpRegular" closeTimeout="00:01:00" openTimeout="00:01:00" receiveTimeout="00:00:20" sendTimeout="00:20:00" transactionFlow="false" transferMode="Buffered" transactionProtocol="OleTransactions" hostNameComparisonMode="StrongWildcard" listenBacklog="10" maxBufferPoolSize="2147483647" maxBufferSize="2147483647" maxConnections="10" maxReceivedMessageSize="2147483647">
<readerQuotas maxDepth="2147483647" maxStringContentLength="2147483647" maxArrayLength="2147483647" maxBytesPerRead="2147483647" maxNameTableCharCount="2147483647"/>
<reliableSession ordered="true" inactivityTimeout="infinite" enabled="false"/>
<security mode="None">
<transport clientCredentialType="None" />
</security>
</binding>
When the client(that holds the channel open) have logged in to the WCF service the channel will throw a faulted exception after 20 secon and Im not doing anything att all, not even commuinicating with the service? SO after 20 sec of inactivity the communication will fail.
The receiveTimeout should only affect when a call is in progress right? So how could it timout when doing nothing but having the channel open and ready for doing service call?
Edit:
By using the WCF log I get this exceptions:

Edit:
Clientside binding :
<binding name="NetTcpBinding_IMyClientServiceRegular" closeTimeout="00:01:00" openTimeout="00:00:30" receiveTimeout="00:00:30" sendTimeout="00:00:30" transactionFlow="false" transferMode="Buffered" transactionProtocol="OleTransactions" hostNameComparisonMode="StrongWildcard" listenBacklog="10" maxBufferPoolSize="2147483647" maxBufferSize="2147483647" maxConnections="10" maxReceivedMessageSize="2147483647">
<readerQuotas maxDepth="2147483647" maxStringContentLength="2147483647" maxArrayLength="2147483647" maxBytesPerRead="2147483647" maxNameTableCharCount="2147483647"/>
<reliableSession ordered="true" inactivityTimeout="infinite" enabled="false"/>
<security mode="None">
<transport clientCredentialType="None"/>
</security>
</binding>
You missunderstand the meaning of ReceiveTimeout. It is "the interval of time that a connection can remain inactive, during which no application messages are received, before it is dropped". To extend this to infinity you need to enable reliable sessions. Hope this clears it up.
Edit:
Here is further description, i think the property you are after is sendtimeout
The receive timeout is how long it waits for all data to be received.
The time starts running as soon as the chanel is open, it does not detect the first byte that you send and start the timer then.
It is a bit like a taxi that starts the meter when you wave it down, not when you get in.

i'm writing a wcf service to handle large files, i've followed the rules explained on msdn and found around on web. The service download method returns a stream and calls a business logic object which searches for documents into an ecm . the ecm api raises an exception when there aren't matching documents and the bl object returns a null stream.
The server side code executes without exceptions, but when the response reaches the client i got a System.ServiceModel.CommunicationException : The underlying connection was closed: The connection was closed unexpectedly .
I've searched the web and all problems related to that exception refer to excessive size of returned values , while i'm having the opposite problem. My question is there's a specific way to handle null return streams ? Is something related to the service or client configuration ? at the moment i'm returning an empty stream , but it doesn't look a smart solution .
Below i've addded sever-client configuration and the trace of the wcf service.

the answer to my question is here
just my lack of knwoledge of stream class
I got a security negotiation exception in the client part when I tried to log in to my server on another PC using the WCF client and server. It works in the local area network, but when I make the server online on the Internet using port forwarding and a static IP address I got this exception in the client.

InnerException:
Is the problem in the server or client part in this exception?
So your client is accessing the service over the Internet? In such a case you cannot use Windows security. It works only on the local network / same Windows domain.
For this exception, you should make the security mode on both the server and client None:
<security mode="None">
<transport clientCredentialType="None">
</transport>
<message clientCredentialType="None" />
</security>
It worked for me, but I got another exception:
The socket connection was aborted. This could be caused by an error processing your message or a receive timeout being exceeded by the remote host, or an underlying network resource issue
We have a wcf pub/sub setup using reliable sessions via netTcpBinding and on one machine where both the publication service and subscription service are being hosted in a console applications we get the above error. This machine is in a workgroup. Everywhere else we have deployed the machine is in a domain and it works fine. My knowledge of wcf is somewhat limited and this has just been handed to me so please be patient. Does anyone have any advice on how to resolve this error?
The full exception is below:
System.ServiceModel.CommunicationException

My binding configuration is as follows:
<netTcpBinding>
<binding name="NetTcpBinding_ISubscriptionService"
closeTimeout="00:01:00"
openTimeout="00:01:00"
receiveTimeout="00:10:00"
sendTimeout="00:01:00"
transactionFlow="false"
transferMode="Buffered"
transactionProtocol="OleTransactions"
hostNameComparisonMode="StrongWildcard"
listenBacklog="10"
maxBufferPoolSize="524288"
maxBufferSize="65536"
maxConnections="10"
maxReceivedMessageSize="65536">
<readerQuotas maxDepth="32"
maxStringContentLength="8192"
maxArrayLength="524288"

<reliableSession ordered="true"

enabled="true"/>
<security mode="Transport"
transport=""
clientCredentialType="Windows"
protectionLevel="EncryptAndSign"
message=""/>
</binding>
</netTcpBinding>
The Endpoint is:
<endpoint address="net.tcp://localhost:8000/SubscriptionService"
binding="netTcpBinding"
bindingConfiguration="NetTcpBinding_ISubscriptionService"
contract="SubscriptionService.ISubscriptionService"
name="NetTcpBinding_ISubscriptionService" />
Ok, I found out what my problem was.
The service the client application was connecting to had mxConnection of 10. We were also using SecureMessaging and had a listenBacklog of 1. Amended maxConnections to 100 and listBacklog to 200 and it all works fine.
For me the problem was that I didn't have the right Service Reference (from a dev machine vs a production machine).
Todays cause of hair loss has been the following scenario:
I have a service that takes 2 strings and returns another. This service uses basicHttpBinding
<basicHttpBinding>
<binding name="basicHttpNoSec">
<security mode="None" />
</binding>
</basicHttpBinding>
Anyway, it works fine from a console test app.
I have a silverlight app sat on top which implements another basicHttpBinding service that simply reuses the contract in the other service and the silverlight App uses this service.
I have a console app that confirms that this service is working and set up with basichttpbinding.
I have all the clientAccessPolicy stuff in place.
when I run the silverlight app the difference is that it runs everything async ... as such the only message i directly get back rom wcf is server not found.
When i enable tracing I dig down to this message - as I know the methods work and the parameteres i pass in will return a valid string i am really puzzled at to what the cause is. any help much appreciated.

<security mode="None">
<transport clientCredentialType="None" proxyCredentialType="None"
realm="" />
<message clientCredentialType="UserName" algorithmSuite="Default" />
</security>
</binding>
and the binding for the broke silverlight app is
<binding name="BasicHttpBinding_IManagement" maxBufferSize="2147483647"
maxReceivedMessageSize="2147483647">
<security mode="None" />
</binding>
both generated from the same wsdl by svcutil.
turns out there was a binding problem in a service that was makign the silverlight app use a nonBasicHttpBinding.
Fairly dumb mistake really.
I'm getting this exception on the client application, not sure how to get past this.
I encounter this exception when the data returned(A list of prices) exceeds 15MB, but works for message size less that 15MB.
Error Message:
An error occurred while receiving the HTTP response to "http://localhost:8782/CMDService". This could be due to the service endpoint binding not using the HTTP protocol. This could also be due to an HTTP request context being aborted by the server (possibly due to the service shutting down). See server logs for more details.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks
Briefly in behaviors you have serviceBehavior and endpointBehavior. You should write something like this:
<behaviors>
<endpointBehaviors>
<behavior>
<dataContractSerializer maxItemsInObjectGraph="10000000"/>
</behavior>
</endpointBehaviors>
<serviceBehaviors>
<behavior>
<dataContractSerializer maxItemsInObjectGraph="2147483647"/>
<serviceMetadata httpGetEnabled="true" />
<serviceDebug includeExceptionDetailInFaults="true" />
</behavior>
</serviceBehaviors>
</behaviors>
Hoping that helps !
Hope It may help you...

If your service was hosted by ASP.NET, you might have to increase ASP.NET's max upload size:
<system.web>
<httpRuntime maxRequestLength="2147483647" />
</system.web>
