Repeated arguments in a prepared statement - sql

consider a query that looks something like this:
my $query=<<QUERY;
select * from foo1 where col < ?
union all
select * from foo2 where col < ?
QUERY
Assume that the actual query really needs unions and can't be efficiently solved another way. The variable in the where clause will always be the same. Is there any way I can structure this so that I only need to pass 1 argument to execute instead of passing the same argument twice?

Could try the following, I'm assuming you're passing an integer to the where clause...
DECLARE #variableName as int
SET #variableName = ? --the value gets passed here once
select * from foo1 where col < #variableName -- and gets used here
union all
select * from foo2 where col < #variableName -- and here!

You could use the list repetition operator.
$sth->execute(($value) x 2);

In "real" databases, you can parameterize a query and pass in the query as an argument. Here is an alternative solution:
with const as (select ? as val)
select *
from ((select foo1.*
from foo1 cross join const
where col < const.val
) union all
(select foo2.*
from foo2 cross join const
where col < const.val
)) t
I am not suggesting that this is necesarily a good idea. However, I have at times found it quite useful to gather parameters into such a subquery and then join them in where needed.

I accomplished the same goal by using a WITH clause, it's nowhere near as elegant but can do the same thing. Though for this example it's really overkill. I also don't particularly recommend this.

There is no such feature in PostgreSQL. You can do it only in pl/PgSQL (or other pl/*), but not in plain SQL.
An exception is WITH () query which can work as a variable, or even tuple of variables. It allows you to return a table of temporary values.
WITH master_user AS (
SELECT
login,
registration_date
FROM users
WHERE ...
)
SELECT *
FROM users
WHERE master_login = (SELECT login
FROM master_user)
AND (SELECT registration_date
FROM master_user) > ...;
You could also try this in PLPGSQL:

Dynamic Config Settings
you can "abuse" dynamic config settings for this:
-- choose some prefix that is unlikely to be used by postgres
set session my.vars.id = '1';
select *
from person
where id = current_setting('my.vars.id')::int;
Config settings are always varchar values, so you need to cast them to the correct data type when using them. This works with any SQL client whereas \set only works in psql
The above requires Postgres 9.2 or later.
For previous versions, the variable had to be declared in postgresql.conf prior to being used, so it limited its usability somewhat. Actually not the variable completely, but the config "class" which is essentially the prefix. But once the prefix was defined, any variable could be used without changing postgresql.conf
It depends on your client.
However, if you're using the psql client, then you can use the following:
my_db=> \set myvar 5
my_db=> SELECT :myvar + 1 AS my_var_plus_1;
my_var_plus_1
---------------

If you are using text variables you need to quote.

This solution is based on the one proposed by fei0x but it has the advantages that there is no need to join the value list of constants in the query and constants can be easily listed at the start of the query. It also works in recursive queries.

Basic example with two constants:

You can, of course, have as many variables as you like, and they can also be derived. For example:
WITH vars AS (
SELECT
'1980-01-01'::date AS start,

(SELECT avg(height) FROM customers) AS avg_height

SELECT *
FROM customers,vars
WHERE (dob BETWEEN vars.start AND vars.end) AND height<vars.avg_height;
The process is:
Generate a one-row cte using SELECT without a table (in Oracle you will need to include FROM DUAL).
CROSS JOIN the cte with the other table. Although there is a CROSS JOIN syntax, the older comma syntax is slightly more readable.
Note that I have cast the dates to avoid possible issues in the SELECT clause. I used PostgreSQL’s shorter syntax, but you could have used the more formal CAST('1980-01-01' AS date) for cross-dialect compatibility.
Normally, you want to avoid cross joins, but since you’re only cross joining a single row, this has the effect of simply widening the table with the variable data.
In many cases, you don’t need to include the vars. prefix if the names don’t clash with the names in the other table. I include it here to make the point clear.
Also, you can go on to add more CTEs.

There might be a way to eliminate the need of triple quote when working with string variables. Please update if you find a way to improve.

In psql, you can use these 'variables' as macros. Note that they get "evaluated" every time they are used, rather than at the time that they are "set".
Simple example:
\set my_random '(SELECT random())'

this gives two different answers each time.
However, you can still use these as a valuable shorthand to avoid repeating lots of subselects.

and then use it in your queries later as
:the_id
e.g.
INSERT INTO table2 (table1_id,x,y,z) VALUES (:the_id, 1,2,3)
Note you have to double-quote the strings in the variables, because the whole thing is then string-interpolated (i.e. macro-expanded) into your query.

Use attributes from one query in the next one inside sp

I need to return two tables from an sp. And I need the second one to use an attribute from the result of the first one. I can do it this way.
select UberId, ... from A where ...;
select * from B where UberId in (select UberId from A where ...);
But I'm wondering if I can do it without running the bracketed subquery but instead just using the output of the first query directly. Would it be more performant?
Use a temp table.
select UberId, ...
into #t
from A
where ...;
select * from #t;

SQL IN() operator with condition inside

I've got table with few numbers inside (or even empty): #states table (value int)
And I need to make SELECT from another table with WHERE clause by definite column.
This column's values must match one of #states numbers or if #states is empty then accept all values (like there is no WHERE condition for this column).
So I tried something like this:
select *
from dbo.tbl_docs docs
where
docs.doc_state in(iif(exists(select 1 from #states), (select value from #states), docs.doc_state))
Unfortunately iif() can't return subquery resulting dataset. I tried different variations with iif() and CASE but it wasn't successful. How to make this condition?

Wouldn't a left join do?
declare #statesCount int;

In general, whenever your query contains sub-queries, you should stop for five minutes, and think hard about whether you really need a sub-query at all.
And if you've got a server capable of doing that, in many cases it might be better to preprocess the input parameters first, or perhaps use constructs such as MS SQL's with.

SQL: Where MYID = ANY?

In a SQL query, that contains
... WHERE MYID = #1 ....
I have to manage 2 cases
1) There is a filter on a column, #1 will be a number (1,2,X...)
2) There is no filter on that column, #1 will be ...? (ANY)
Is there something for this "any" (SQL Server 2005) ?

Obviously, I understand that I can remove the "where".

I explain myself for better understanding: I have this query in the code, and would like to pass an integer as parameter when the filter is ON, and "something" when my filter is OFF.

Make a UNION ALL of the two statements:
SELECT *
FROM mytable
WHERE myid = #col
UNION ALL
SELECT *
FROM mytable
WHERE #col IS NULL
or just split them in an IF / ELSE block of a stored procedures.
Either way, the optimizer will be able to optimize the queries separately, completely ignoring one of them depending on the value of #col.
you could do something along this line:
where (myid = #id or #id is null)
so you will only filter when #id contains a value and not when it is null.
Just remove the where or and clause if there is no filter on that column.
If you don't want to filter on a particular column, just don't filter on that column. Remove the WHERE MYID = entirely
Having
"select * from FOO where FOOID = {0}", param
use param="FOOID" when there is no param to filter, this will give
select * from FOO where FOOID = FOOID // removing the filter
