Does MSSQL currently have any features similar to "PERIOD" columns in SQL2011? - sql

I have a project where the PERIOD columns defined in the SQL2011 spec are the perfect solution. Unfortunately, I am forced to use MSSQL 2008R2 (or possibly MSSQL 2012) as my database, which does not support this feature.
Is there any proprietary feature that resembles the PERIOD features in SQL2011 currently in MSSQL? If not, any advice for the best way to try to implement something resembling it?

Take a look at Anchor Modelling. I know it's not exactly what you're looking for, (a PERIOD equivalent) but databases implemented as an Anchor model can include bi-temporal aspects. The generated SQL code when exporting the model primarily supports MS SQL. Oracle is available too but a lot of work when into optimizing the schema, trigger and view SQL code for MS SQL. Maybe it'll help, maybe you can see how they implemented bi-temporal data in a way that works really well with MS SQL.

Standard or Legacy SQL for Google Analytics Data in BigQuery?

we are just starting to use Google Analytics data in BigQuery and previously used just the MSSQL Server in the work environment. We would like to move some of the analysis to the GCP and BigQuery, but could not decide on what is the better option to use - standard or legacy SQL?
In both cases we would have to adjust to the new language version, but the real question is what is the best choice when it comes to Google Analytics data analysis? Is there something that from the technical point of view should make us choose legacy over standard, or the other way around?
It is very misleading for us that there are two versions, because legacy seems to be more developed now, but perphaps standard will be the main version for SQL in the future in BQ?
BigQuery Standard SQL is the way to go. It has much more features than Legacy SQL.
Note: it is not binary choice. You always can use Legacy SQL - if there is something that you will find easier to express with it. From my experience it is mostly opposite - with very few exceptions. Most prominent (for me for example being) - Table Decorators - Support for table decorators in standard SQL is planned but not yet implemented.
I would recommend looking into Migrating from legacy SQL - not from migration point of view as you are the new to BigQuery - but because it is a good place to see and compare features of both dialects in one place.

Standard SQL is the preferred SQL dialect for use in BigQuery, as stated in the migration guide. While legacy SQL has been around for quite some time--and is still the default at the time of this writing--there is no active development work on it. If you are evaluating which to use, you should pick standard SQL, since in addition to being more similar to T-SQL (SQL Server's dialect) it is more expressive, has fewer surprising edge cases, and generally has more features.
Go with Standard SQL, as that's on the longterm roadmap.
From experience some queries are faster under Legacy SQL, but this is changing as Standard SQL is the one that is actively developed.

SQL Query builder in Delphi

I need to give users the ability to build a simple SQL query against our database. Our application is written in Delphi.
I am assuming only moderate levels of knowledge by the user, but they need the ability to build a simple select statement to be able to query against a couple of tables. If I can make this easy for them, that would be most wondrous.
Does anyone know of a tool or a set of components that I can use to help the users build SQL SELECT statements...
I've used the DevExpress ExpressFilter control to allow users to specify SQL where constraints before.

It looks like the right idea. Anyone have any experience with it?
I've used SimpleQuery for years and am quite happy with it. (http://devtools.korzh.com/eq/vcl/) It's not completely intuitive, but once you get the hang of it, you can present fields to the user from your database(s) and they can combine any series of them with ANDs and ORs to make very complex queries. You get a separate SQL window to save the resulting code. I make The resulting dataset available for printout with PrintDat! or to save as CSV data from the Woll2Woll Infopower grid that I use for display. I occasionally allow for XLS export too with XLSReadWrite. It's all quite automatic at this point. Just take the SimpleQuery example and mold that to your particular needs. You should be able to have something very usable in a day. There is a trial and an example free query builder standalone program that will give you an idea of the final look.

I think the most powerful one is ActiveQueryBuilder, which now included with Delphi IDE (Since 2007 I think)

I've written a couple of similar things in Delphi. It's easy enough to allow the user to pick table and column names by querying the metadata and using lists and tree views for display. The difficulty comes when trying to implement things like joins. I've never come up with a good interface for this, and in my experience neither have many of the major data tools players.

What to use for a flexible data access layer - OLEDB or...?

I am creating a quick and dirty prototype (C#) of an object-relational mapping tool. I would like to support at least two kinds of databases - one will be Microsoft SQL Server 2005/2008 and the other most probably MySQL.
Is there any way to use a single data base access mechanism for both database engines and what would it be?
Of course, I know that there will be differences in SQL query syntax, but in my case it is not that important - I'll use a tool to generate SQL queries which suit the certain db engine and user will be able to optimize those SQL queries.
The main idea is to have as flexible data provider solution as possible. Can it be done or not and how can it be done easier?
Note that I am not using this for a production system, just for a prototype, but still I'm curious how it is achieved in production OR/M tools - are they using completely separate access mechanism for each data provider or there are something common? And are they using DataReaders or there is some more appropriate way to retrieve data if I intend to transform data to business objects?

Now I can specify only once what kind of DataProvider I use and then just use Db/IDb everywhere else.

What is MDX and what is its use in SAP BPC

I would like to know more about "MDX" (Multidimensional Expressions).
What is it?
What is it used for?
Why would you use it?
Is it better than SQL?
What is its use in SAP BPS (I haven't seen BPC, just heard that MDX is in it and want to know more)?
MDX is the query language developed by Microsoft for use with their OLAP tools. Since its creation, others (The open source project Mondrian, and Hyperion) have tried to create versions of it for use in their products.
OLAP data tends to look like a star-schema with a central fact table surrounded by multiple dimensions. MDX is designed to allow you to query these structures and create cross-tab type results.
While the language looks like SQL it doesn't behave like it and if you are an SQL programmer, the mental leap can be tough.
As to whether it is better than SQL, it serves a highly specialized purpose, i.e. analyzing data in a specific format. So if you want to query a star schema, it is better, otherwise, SQL will probably do the job.
MDX means Multi Dimensional eXpressions or some such. It is relevant to OLAP cubes and not to regular relational databases such as Oracle or SQL Server (although some SQL Server editions come with Analysis Services which is OLAP). The multidimensional world is about data warehousing and efficient reporting, not about doing normal transactional processing so you wouldn't use it for an order entry system, but you might move that data into a datamart to run reports against to see sales trends. That should be enough to get you started I hope.
SQL is for 'traditional' databases (OLTP). Most people learn the basics fairly easily.
MDX is only for multi-dimensional databases (OLAP), and is harder to learn than SQL in my opinion. The trouble is they look very similar.
Many programmers never need MDX even if they have to query multi-dimensional databases, because most analysis software forces them to build reports with drag-drop interfaces.
If you don't have a requirement to work with a multi-dimensional database, then don't create one just for the fun of it.....it won't be...

The Microsoft analysis services version of the product allows you to use MDX or multi dimensional expressions to both query the multi-dimensional database (OLAP) and write calculation logic.
However, SAP-BPC does not require a knowledge of MDX to either be used or administered.

What is it used for?
It's used when you want to apply some custom calculation/business logic over many records/intersections and after submitting raw data. Example, first send prices in one input schedule, then quantities in other one, as a third step run a calculation for sales amount based on prices and quantities for all products.
It's also used to execute the Business Rules, for that you run a predefined program (like CALC_ACCOUNT, CONSOLIDATION, etc)
Is it better than SQL?
In BPC, "SQL" logic scripts have better performance than MDX. However SQL for BPC purposes has not much to do with SQL used in other it's just how they call it.

Can you recommend a good source for Teradata Best Practices?

Looks like my data warehouse project is moving to Teradata next year (from SQL Server 2005).
I'm looking for resources about best practices on Teradata - from limitations of its SQL dialect to idioms and conventions for getting queries to perform well - particularly if they highlight things which are significantly different from SQL Server 2005. Specifically tips similar to those found in The Art of SQL (which is more Oracle-focused).
My business processes are currently in T-SQL stored procedures and rely fairly heavily on SQL Server 2005 features like PIVOT, UNPIVOT, and Common Table Expressions to produce about 27m rows of output a month from a 4TB data warehouse.

This might be a little late, but there are a few things which I can warn you about Teradata which I have learned.
Use the most recent version as often as possible.
For V12 the optimizer was re-written and the database performs much better now.
Try to realize that SQL Server and Teradata are very different beasts, most of the concepts will not transition well.
Do not underestimate the importance of a primary index.
The locks that teradata uses are very primitive when compared to other databases.
Do NOT use TERA mode. You do not have any code which is legacy, ANSI mode is far superior and is widely encouraged.
Join indexes are very helpful tools, but they do not provide all the answers.
Parallelism, take the time to understand how FASTLOAD, MULTILOAD, and TPUMP works and find out how one can leverage it with their ETL strategy.
If you are attempting to run a query which needs to be performant, do not use any casts, the optimizer will not use statistics to generate the best execution plan.
Working with dates are going to be a pain, just a warning.
Teradata is very DDL oriented, try to understand all the syntax related when creating a table.
Compression is a wonderful tool, if you have any values which are repeated in a table, make use of it.
There are not many tools available with Teradata, be prepared to build a lot. The tools that exist are very expensive.
Unfortunately, I do not know much about SQL Server, so I cannot say what tools in SQL Server appear in Teradata.

Alternatively, you need to find a friendly Teradata expert to bounce ideas off. Try Teradata themselves, or find a local consultant with Teradata experience.
Best Practices on Teradata isn't a topic that gets lots of discussions and most of the best tricks tend to be proprietary knowledge of the person/people who discovered them.
