Having a heck of a time with this one.
I've got a super-simple Cocoa app containing one WebView, a WebScripting API defined in the page, and a single NSObject defined on that API. When I turn on the debugger tools (in the embedded WebView), I can see the API on the JavaScript window object, and I can see my "api" property defined on that -- but when I call the API's "get" method, the arguments aren't being serialized -- when the Obj-C method gets called, the arguments are missing. See below, which hopefully illustrates:
I've combed through the docs, I've (apparently) set the appropriate methods to expose everything that needs to be exposed, and I can see the method being called. There has to be something stupid I'm missing, but as a relative newbie to this environment, I'm not seeing it.

Have you set WebKitDeveloperExtras to YES in your default user defaults when you send -[NSUserDefaults registerDefaults:]?
Depending on what version of Xcode you're using you could be getting a known error. If you're using LLDB on anything but the most recent version, it might not be giving you the right variables in the debugger. The solution has been to use GDB instead of LLDB until Apple fixes the problem. But I think they fixed the problem in the latest version. I'd change the debugger to use GDB and see if you're getting the right variables in Xcode. (Product-> Edit Scheme...-> Run -> Debugger). I came across this problem in iOS, though, so I don't know its applicability to OSX. Worth a try anyway.

I process javascript in the main thread of my app from a local file stored in the apps directory. I check for beginning and ending tokens for the js functions I am executing and whether the function contains a variable.
Hopefully this can give you some good ideas for your issue. You could also do alerts in the js to see if the values post correctly as you run the app (I am sure you thought of that already, but it's worth mentioning.) Happy coding! I hope this helps!

Just to be clear, this approach works fine for all other JS functions that immediately return results. I am using browserify to package them all into a single JS. I'm just noticing problems with functions that return asynchronously via callback. (Notice I'm adding callback function to the context.
When I run this on XCode it hangs (not just the app but also the XCode editor itself, and it never recovers until I kill the process from Activity Monitor).
However for some reason it returns the result as soon as I unplug the iPhone from my laptop. (At this point XCode is still in a limbo state until I kill it)
Once detached from XCode, the app runs fine. It just hangs while it's running from XCode invoked run.
Probably you are trying to convert some JavaScript value to NSDictionary via toDictionary call. This method attempts to convert value recursively, so it leads to a hung often. I suspect that any JS value with circular references causes infinite recursion in this case. Try to work with JSValue directly instead.
I have an NSDocument with some simple code:

If I change the file in an external editor, how do I get notified of this so I can handle it? I assume there is something built in for this, but I can't find it.
I'm looking for something built into NSDocument. I'm aware of FSEvent, but that seems too low level to do something very common for most document-based apps.
Since OS X v10.7, NSDocument provides a far simpler mechanism you can override in subclasses: -presentedItemDidChange.
Handling -presentedItemDidChange, Ignoring Metadata Changes
Just relying on this callback can produce false positives, though, when metadata change. That got on my nerves quickly for files stored in Dropbox, for example.
My approach to deal with this in general, in Swift, is like this:

In a callback from the "do you want to replace contents?" alert which I call -ignoreLatestFileChanges so you don't nag your user ad infitium;
In -readFromURL:ofType:error: or however you end up reading in contents for the initial value;
In -dataOfType:error: or however you produce contents to write to disk.
You want to register with the FSEvents API. Since 10.7, you can watch arbitrary files.

When I open a document in my document-based app, edit in in another application, and switch back to my app, the same method that you mentioned (readFromData:ofType:error:) is called with the new data. This method is called when you restore a previous version from the Versions browser, too.
You could then add a boolean instance variable to check whether it's being called because of an external update (in my case, I check whether one of my IBOutlets is initialized: if it's not, the document is being loaded for the first time). You might want to move your code that makes use of the string instance variable into some method that you can call if the document is already initialized, like this:

NSMetadataQuery seems to be the best way to monitor file and folder changes without polling and with a low cpu overhead.

I've never been able to find an ideal solution to watching files for updates, NSFilePresenter sounds like it should be the appropriate high level solution, but from what I can tell it only works if the file is being edited by another App using NSFilePresenter also. I've also tried VDKQueue and SCEvents which wrap low level kernel events but have a cpu overhead.
I'm using what seems to be a simple invocation of the NSFileVersion class method removeOtherVersionsOfItemAtURL: inside a coordinated writing block for some iCloud conflict resolution.

Before submitting a radar, I thought I'd check here to see if there's something I'm doing wrong? The extra [... copy] on line 1402 was just a quick check to make sure I'm not losing the reference to the block-provided argument, and will be removed.

I'm looking to implement a class that will be able to read a QR Code from a file (jpeg, bmp, whatever) and output that information as an NSString.
The problem I'm having is that every project seems to revolve around getting the iPhone to do this with the camera.
I am looking to do this on an OSX Desktop with an Image File. I've attempted to use the Objective-C OSX project included with ZXing, but I have been unable to get it to play nice with my own projects.
Has anybody had any success in doing this? Thanks!

The targetMovieFrame is brought in, it runs it through the cocktail of filters to produce a binary image. It produces results by decoding the image using hints, and using a method included in the QRCodeReader object. Then I return the results, which is an NSString. Everything else is just exceptions being caught and returned.
So I'm still kind of new to Objective-C, and this was my first app that I'm now updating. The idea is this: The whole app is basically various lists of stuff. It asks the API for 15 posts, shows those with a Load More button. Click Load More, it loads 15 more, etc. The API that it loads these from has a token system with a timeout built in. Too long between requests, and you have to get a new token. So I want to have a singleton to use anywhere in my app so I can just do [APIMachine getToken] and behind the scenes, it checks if the time since the last request was too long (or this is the first request), if so, gets a new token, otherwise returns the one we already have. I'm following the singleton pattern I've found in so many places, but every time the Load More button uses [APIMachine getToken]it gets either nothing or something completely random. I had it print this stuff in the logs, and one time I even got a UITableViewCell as my token. Looks like variables are being overwritten somehow. But I really can't figure it out.

I can only hope I'm doing something seriously foolish and this will be a hilarious point-and-laugh-at-that-guy thread. Then at least my app will work.
In API_open, you store three objects in instance variables, but they're not objects you own, so they'll probably be gone by the time you need them and replaced by something unpredictable. You need to retain them or use proper setters.
You problem is:

Also I am of the school that adding extra code to try to prevent the singleton from being used as a single is a total waste of time, and only give you more code with more possibilities for bugs.
So if I was you then I would remove every method from +[PoorApi2 allocWithZone:] and down. Objective-C is a dynamic language and if a client wanted to instantiate a second instance of your singleton then it would be able to do so despite all your wasted extra lines of code. At the most I would add a log like this:

Creating a second instance of a singleton is a programming error and should be caught in development. Not a problem you should add extra lines of code to hide.
