Add Description From Excel File to Columns description in SQL - sql

I have a DB (in SQL Server 2008 SP3) include many tables and each tables have a lot of columns, in other hand I have an Excel file include description for any of my DB's columns (In SQL Server Management Studio when you want create a table, in design mode, for each column in property window there is a description field), So I am interesting in add this(Excel) description to description of columns in DB (of course not by hand and one by one), does any one have any idea about this?

Knock up some VBA to iterate through the Excel data, calling the database for each table/column.

SQL Server: Create a duplicate of a database without the data

I have a database called AQOA_Core with huge amount of data.
I have a newly created database called AQOA_Core1 which is basically empty. I want to write a query to duplicate AQOA_Core to AQOA_Core1 without the data. I guess to be precise I want to create a skeleton of the primary database into the secondary database.
PS: I use Toad for my database operations.
You can use SQL Server Script Wizard for scripting database objects. You can exclude data, and select the database object types you want to include in your script

Using data held in an SQL database in Visual Studio

So far, I have created 3 tables in SQL using visual studio. They have been connected to my VB project file and I can view the data held within them using the Database Explorer.
My only problem is: how do I use/make available the data held within each table?
I need to write code which will add a Japanese character (from one of the tables that already exists) to a new table when a check box is ticked. Then I need to write code to update the table and save the changes.
I have absolutely no idea how to retrieve the data held in each table nor how to write a SQL query in VB.
Any help would be appreciated.

Modify data in MSAccess before passing on to SQL Table

I have set up an Access database with a linked table to an SQL table. I've created a query in Access off the linked table. I have shipping software that i've set up to export data to the Access query and it successfully gets passed on to the SQL Table. So far, so good.
Now to the issue. The "weight" column in the SQL table has an "implied" 4 decimal places. So when I export a weight of "1", it shows up in the SQL table as ".0001". I need to multiply the weight by 10000 in order to get it to show up as "1.0000" in the SQL table.
I've tried modifying the Query's SELECT statement to do the math on that column but I get a "Cannot Update Field" error out of the ODBC driver.
Is there a way to make this happen? I'm not using MS Access at all (other than to create the .mdb file). Just using the .mdb file as a bridge between the shipping application and the SQL table.

ADO to query MDB and SQL Server

I've got a database that resides on an SQL server box, and another in a separate mdb file.
Both contain similar data, but I'd like to run a query that checks unmatched records from a field that exists in both.
Is this something that's easy enough to do using ADO (VBA)? If so can you point me in the right direction?
The easiest would be to create a new Access Database or ADP, and link the tables from both the SQL server and the other MDB. That way you've got an interface to both from within the same instance, which allows you to query or join different tables.

How to do a search and replace of a part of a string in all columns in all tables in an sql database

Is it possible to search and replace all occurrences of a string in all columns in all tables of a database? I use Microsoft SQL Server.
Not easily, though I can thing of two ways to do it:
Write a series of stored procedures that identify all varchar and text columns of all tables, and generate individual update statements for each column of each table of the form "UPDATE foo SET BAR = REPLACE(BAR,'foobar','quux')". This will probably involve a lot of queries against the system tables, with a lot of experimentation -- Microsoft doesn't go out of its way to document this stuff.
Export the entire database to a single text file, do a search/replace on that, and then re-import the entire database. Given that you're using MS SQL Server, this is actually the easier approach. Microsoft created the Microsoft SQL Server Database Publishing Wizard for other reasons, but it makes a fine tool for exporting all of the tables of a SQL Server database as a text file containing pure SQL DDL and DML. Run the tool to export all of the tables for a database, edit the resulting file as you need, and then feed the file back to sqlcmd to recreate the database.
Given a choice, I'd use the second method, as long as the DPW works with your version of SQL Server. The last time I used the tool, it met my needs (MS SQL Server 2000 / 2005) but it had some quirks when working with database Roles.
In MySQL, you can do it very easily like this:
update [table_name] set [field_name] = replace([field_name],'[string_to_find]','[string_to_replace]');
I have personally tested this successfully on a production server.

A good starting point for writing such a query is the "Search all columns in all the tables in a database for a specific value" stored procedure. The full code is at the link (not trivial, but copy/paste it and use it, it just works).
From there on it's relatively trivial to amend the code to do a replace of the found values.
