We have a 5GB table (nearly 500 million rows) and we want to remove the identity property on one of the column, but when we try to do this through SSMS - it times out.
Can this be done through T-SQL?
You cannot remove an IDENTITY specification once set.
To remove the entire column:
ALTER TABLE yourTable
DROP COLUMN yourCOlumn;
Information about ALTER TABLE here
If you need to keep the data, but remove the IDENTITY column, you will need to:
Create a new column
Transfer the data from the existing IDENTITY column to the new column
Drop the existing IDENTITY column.
Rename the new column to the original column name
If you want to do this without adding and populating a new column, without reordering the columns, and with almost no downtime because no data is changing on the table, let's do some magic with partitioning functionality (but since no partitions are used you don't need Enterprise edition):
Remove all foreign keys that point to this table
Script the table to be created; rename everything e.g. 'MyTable2', 'MyIndex2', etc.
Remove the IDENTITY specification.
You should now have two "identical"-ish tables, one full, the other empty with no IDENTITY.
Run ALTER TABLE [Original] SWITCH TO [Original2]
Now your original table will be empty and the new one will have the data. You have switched the metadata for the two tables (instant).
Drop the original (now-empty table), exec sys.sp_rename to rename the various schema objects back to the original names, and then you can recreate your foreign keys.
For example, given:

This gets messy with foreign and primary key constraints, so here's some scripts to help you on your way:
First, create a duplicate column with a temporary name:
alter table yourTable add tempId int NOT NULL default -1;
update yourTable set tempId = id;
Next, get the name of your primary key constraint:
SELECT * FROM INFORMATION_SCHEMA.TABLE_CONSTRAINTS WHERE TABLE_NAME = 'yourTable';
Now try drop the primary key constraint for your column:
ALTER TABLE yourTable DROP CONSTRAINT PK_yourTable_id;
If you have foreign keys, it will fail, so if so drop the foreign key constraints. KEEP TRACK OF WHICH TABLES YOU RUN THIS FOR SO YOU CAN ADD THE CONSTRAINTS BACK IN LATER!!!
SELECT * FROM INFORMATION_SCHEMA.TABLE_CONSTRAINTS WHERE TABLE_NAME = 'otherTable';
alter table otherTable drop constraint fk_otherTable_yourTable;
commit;

Once all of your foreign key constraints have been removed, you'll be able to remove the PK constraint, drop that column, rename your temp column, and add the PK constraint to that column:

EXEC sp_rename 'yourTable.tempId', 'id', 'COLUMN';

Make a new column
alter table users add newusernum int;
Copy values over
update users set newusernum=usernum;
Drop the old column
alter table users drop column usernum;
Rename the new column to the old column name

Just for someone who have the same problem I did.
If you just want to make some insert just once you can do something like this.
Lets suppose you have a table with two columns
ID Identity (1,1) | Name Varchar
and want to insert a row with the ID = 4. So you Reseed it to 3 so the next one is 4
DBCC CHECKIDENT([YourTable], RESEED, 3)
Make the Insert
INSERT INTO [YourTable]
( Name )
VALUES ( 'Client' )
And get your seed back to the highest ID, lets suppose is 15
DBCC CHECKIDENT([YourTable], RESEED, 15)
Done!
I had the same requirement, and you could try this way, which I personally recommend you, please manually design your table and generate the script, and what I did below was renaming the old table and also its constraint for backup.

You cannot "convert" an existing column into an IDENTITY column - you will have to create a new column as INT IDENTITY:

You can't modify an existing column to have the IDENTITY "property" - you have to:
create a new table with the same structure (but with IDENTITY set up),
turn on IDENTITY_INSERT for this new table,
insert rows from the old table into the new table,
drop the old table, and,
rename the new table to have the old table name.
If there are foreign keys involved, you need to fix those up also.
The problem with most solutions to this question is that they require either adding a new column to the table or completely rebuilding the table.
Both can require large amounts of locking and logging activity which I have always found annoying as this is a metadata only change and shouldn't necessitate touching the data pages at all (Indeed it is possible to update the metadata directly by starting the instance in single user mode and messing around with some columns in sys.syscolpars but this is undocumented/unsupported.)
However the workaround posted on this connect item shows a completely supported way of making this into a metadata only change using ALTER TABLE...SWITCH (credit SQLKiwi)

In fact, you can modify the IDENTITY on a column.

You need to use the ALTER TABLE command - always test first in dev or pre-production!

Since you can only ignore identity columns for insert, not for update, you'll need an intermediate table. Here's an example:

I think the best you can do is drop the constraint and create it again:

First, find out the name of the 'constraint' on the field which is used to set the default. You can do this by running this query:

If your Column is NOT NULL, then it will automatically use the Default Value
for all Existing Records, whether you specify WITH VALUES or not.
How Inserts work with a Default-Constraint:
If you insert a Record into SomeTable and do not Specify SomeCol's value, then it will Default to 0.
If you insert a Record and Specify SomeCol's value as NULL (and your column allows nulls),
then the Default-Constraint will not be used and NULL will be inserted as the Value.

The inclusion of the DEFAULT fills the column in existing rows with the default value, so the NOT NULL constraint is not violated.
When adding a nullable column, WITH VALUES will ensure that the specific DEFAULT value is applied to existing rows:

Beware when the column you are adding has a NOT NULL constraint, yet does not have a DEFAULT constraint (value). The ALTER TABLE statement will fail in that case if the table has any rows in it. The solution is to either remove the NOT NULL constraint from the new column, or provide a DEFAULT constraint for it.

Here is another way to add a column to an existing database table with a default value.
A much more thorough SQL script to add a column with a default value is below including checking if the column exists before adding it also checkin the constraint and dropping it if there is one. This script also names the constraint so we can have a nice naming convention (I like DF_) and if not SQL will give us a constraint with a name which has a randomly generated number; so it's nice to be able to name the constraint too.

You can do the thing with T-SQL in the following way.

In SQL Server 2008-R2, I go to the design mode - in a test database - and add my two columns using the designer and made the settings with the GUI, and then the infamous Right-Click gives the option "Generate Change Script"!
Bang up pops a little window with, you guessed it, the properly formatted guaranteed-to-work change script. Hit the easy button.
Alternatively, you can add a default without having to explicitly name the constraint:

If you have an issue with existing default constraints when creating this constraint then they can be removed by:

This has a lot of answers, but I feel the need to add this extended method. This seems a lot longer, but it is extremely useful if you're adding a NOT NULL field to a table with millions of rows in an active database.

What this will do is add the column as a nullable field and with the default value, update all fields to the default value (or you can assign more meaningful values), and finally it will change the column to be NOT NULL.
The reason for this is if you update a large scale table and add a new not null field it has to write to every single row and hereby will lock out the entire table as it adds the column and then writes all the values.
This method will add the nullable column which operates a lot faster by itself, then fills the data before setting the not null status.
I've found that doing the entire thing in one statement will lock out one of our more active tables for 4-8 minutes and quite often I have killed the process. This method each part usually takes only a few seconds and causes minimal locking.
Additionally, if you have a table in the area of billions of rows it may be worth batching the update like so:

There are 2 different ways to address this problem.
Both adds a default value but adds a totally different meaning to the problem statement here.
Lets start with creating some sample data.

Well this addresses our problem to have default value but here is a catch to the problem.
What if we want to have default value in all the columns not just the future inserts???
For this we have Method 2.

Well, I now have some modification to my previous answer. I have noticed that none of the answers mentioned IF NOT EXISTS. So I am going to provide a new solution of it as I have faced some problems altering the table.
IF NOT EXISTS (SELECT * FROM INFORMATION_SCHEMA.columns WHERE table_name = 'TaskSheet' AND column_name = 'IsBilledToClient')

IsBilledToClient bit NOT NULL DEFAULT ((1))

Here TaskSheet is the particular table name and IsBilledToClient is the new column which you are going to insert and 1 the default value. That means in the new column what will be the value of the existing rows, therefore one will be set automatically there. However, you can change as you wish with the respect of the column type like I have used BIT, so I put in default value 1.
I suggest the above system, because I have faced a problem. So what is the problem? The problem is, if the IsBilledToClient column does exists in the table table then if you execute only the portion of the code given below you will see an error in the SQL server Query builder. But if it does not exist then for the first time there will be no error when executing.
