Delete folders from FTP using MSBuild - msbuild

How is it possible to delete recursively folders from FTP using MSBuild task or script?

You might try out FTPSync as recommended in the answer to FTP only changed files in MSBuild.
If you can mount the FTP site to your build environment, you can do a recursive delete using the Well-known Item Metadata %(RecursiveDir) property. You can also create a target to do that like this example.

Extracting MSDeploy Zip package using variables

I’m setting up an automated build in VSTS that will FTP the published files to my server.
I have this working but the way I’ve achieved it, I feel is hacky and non-sustainable.
the process as you can see from the screenshots will publish the artefact which consists of a readme, cmd file and a zip containing all my publish files and then I extract the ZIP with the very explicit location below.
$(Build.ArtifactStagingDirectory)\temp\Content\d_C\a\1\s\IntermittentBug\IntermittentBug\obj\Release_EukHosts\Package\PackageTmp
I’m using a hosted build server in VSTS but as the path contains
d_C\a\1\s\
I assume this will change in time. What I need is a variable to cater for this path so it will always succeed.
How can I update this to make it more efficient and sustainable?
First, as jessehouwing said that the variable is called Build.SourcesDirectory.
Regarding the path structure, the simple way is specifying /p:PackageTempRootDir="" msbuild argument in Visual Studio Build task to remove the source path structure, then the path will be like Content\D_C\PackageTmp.
On the other hand, you also can publish the web app through File System mode.
This variable is caught in a predefined variable called Build.SourcesDirectory. see the complete list of predefined variables here.
In your batch or powershell scripts this variable is available as a environment variable called %BUILD_SOURCESDIRECTORY% / $env:BUILD_SOURCESDIRECTORY.

Prevent MSDeploy (selectively) from deleting folders on target IIS server

I have an IIS web application with a structure roughly similar to:
wwww.mysite.com
file1.asp
file2.asp
\DotNet
file3.aspx
file3.aspx
We are setting up TeamCity to do auto deployments. I have an MSBuild build step that deploys to the \DotNet folder (the aspx files), and in a separate build configuration I have another MSBuild build step that deploys to the root (the asp files).
I want to allow MSDeploy to delete unnecessary files, e.g. if I remove file2.asp from VCS, I want it to delete it from the target IIS server.
However, I do NOT want it to wipe the \DotNet subfolder.
Can I get something more granular than the command line switch "SkipExtraFilesOnServer", or is this an all-or-nothing deal?
It turns out that the answer to my question was much simpler than I expected
When deploying to the root folder of an application using the MSDeployPublish target via MSBuild, by default, extra subfolders that happen to be on the filesystem of the target IIS server are deleted.
To avoid this, I simply moved the contents of my DotNet folder to a totally separate location under C:\InetPub, but retained my original virtual folder/application structure under IIS Mgr. Of course!
Now I can publish to either location as much as I please, and one won't try and delete the other because one is no longer a filesystem subfolder of the other.
If anything - this highlights how primitive our earlier folder structure was, and what a doofus I am for not realising.
I'm not exactly sure what you're looking for here. Are you trying to delete all the files from within the dotnet subfolder but keep the folder? Are you trying to have the delete operation never delete anything from the dotnet folder? The msdeploy sync operation is pretty smart. msdeploy will move all of your marked project assets, so assuming you don't delete the files in the dotnet folder, then you should be fine.
If you just want to exempt the dotnet folder from any delete actions, as if it were a not part of your project at all, but its in a subfolder the web server and you want to not touch it, then I would suggest using the skip option in msdeploy with wildcards. I've only used it for files, but it should work for folders too. It goes like so:
-skip:objectName=filePath,absolutePath=app_offline\.*
There's documentation here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd569089%28WS.10%29.aspx
Search the page for
-skip:skipAction=
You could also add a skip setting with name of the folder you wish to not by synced, like in the following msdeploy call:
msdeploy
-verb:sync
-source:contentPath="C:\Data\Personal\My Repo\MSDeploy\MultiSkip\Source"
-dest:contentPath="C:\Data\Personal\My Repo\MSDeploy\MultiSkip\Dest"
-skip:objectName=dirPath,absolutePath="DotNet"
[I took the example from the answer to this question.]

Nuget: Is there a transformation token available to get the location of the package tools folder?

I am trying to use Nuget to distribute a ms build .targets file. I need to modify some elements of the file to include the installed path of a few assemblies. For that I would like to use the tools folder. I am having a hard time finding the token (if it exists) to do the replacement. Has anyone encountered this problem or know of a workaround?
http://docs.nuget.org/docs/creating-packages/configuration-file-and-source-code-transformations
You'll have to go the PowerShell route to get this done, as no transform exists AFAIK. The init.ps1 file can process some parameters provided by the NuGet VSIX.
Simply add the following to the top of the init.ps1 file and use the $installPath variable in your scripts that modify the file content.
param($installPath, $toolsPath, $package, $project)
Check here for an example usage.

How to delete files prior to publish using msdeploy or msbuild?

I am using msdeploy to publish on a remote server via teamcity. Problem is msdeploy doesn't delete files in IIS site directory prior to publish. Can any one tell how to delete file prior to publish using msdeploy or do I have to write a batch script to delete directory and then recreate it?
see http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd568992(WS.10).aspx for extra msdeploy rules which you can enable/disable. I think you need the 'DoNotDeleteRule' but i am not sure.
For delete files in a folder, but don't delete folder i find a solution with sync functionality. I synced an empty folder with destination folder.
my command is:
msdeploy.exe -verb:sync -source:contentPath="path to empty folder here" -dest:contentPath="folder to cleanup",computerName=%msdeploy_Server_Url_here%?site=%IIS_Site_Name_here%,userName=%msdeploy_user_name_here%,password=%msdeploy_user_pwd_here%,authType=basic -allowUntrusted=true

FTP only changed files in MSBuild

An MSBuild project copies its output to a directory on a server. Each day, only a few files change and most have an older creation date.
I can FTP this to a remote server with MSBuild tasks. But how can I do this FTP and only copy the few files that have changed?
To do this you'll need something that will manage the sync for you - that is that will keep track of what file is where and update accordingly.
We have used FTPSync to do the file sync bit very tidly for a number of sites.
From MSBuild you can call an external program - so putting the two together will probably work providing your are consistently synching from the same location (otherwise its going to be more interesting!)
