How to create a procedure that goes from the top of the table and compares the value to null
- If a match is found, insert an element in this position.
- If not, the element is inserted into a new row
I need to correct a second row which contains null values in 4 last columns regardless of values in the Id and PropertyId columns
Here is a screenshot of my DB
Here is a samples of data:
Now it works so, which is not suitable to me, instead it should update the row with null values like on the last screenshot
But the next entry should overwrite the value of NULL for Item, ItemId, InstanceId and Instance
Write a stored procedure like:
create procedure INSERT_OR_UPDATE as
begin
if exists ( select * from Numerations where <your condition> )
begin
update Numerations set < ... > where < ... >
end
else
begin
insert into Numerations values <...>
end
end
You have to check the syntax because I cannot test my code right now.

I have the following query use for check duplicate data in table. If match data then update row else insert new row. In my case I have already one matched row in att_log table where emp_id=19.1.0121 and where mp_pk_id='32' AND att_date='2021-10-01', so result should be SET holiday=H in the matched row. But the DECLARE statement run without error and in console show affected row:1, but no change occur in data base, holiday not set to "H".
DECLARE c_emp_id att_log.emp_id%type;
BEGIN
SELECT emp_id
INTO c_emp_id
FROM att_log
WHERE emp_id='19.1.0121'
AND emp_pk_id='32'
AND att_date='2021-10-01' ;
EXCEPTION
WHEN TOO_MANY_ROWS THEN
UPDATE att_log
SET holiday = 'H',
updated_at = '2021-08-22'
WHERE emp_id='19.1.0121'
AND att_date='2021-10-01';
WHEN NO_DATA_FOUND THEN
INSERT INTO att_log (emp_id, emp_pk_id, att_date, holiday,login_time, logout_time)
VALUES ('19.1.0121', '32', '2021-10-01','H','','');
COMMIT WORK;
END;
If I run the query separately without DECLARE statement then data row change happen, but with the above DECLARE statement no change happen in data row in the ORACLE table. What is my fault! Sorry, I am new to ORACLE, and also sorry for poor English.
A MERGE operation can INSERT or UPDATE (and also DELETE) depending on whether the row exists or not.
Here's a working test case:
Test case / fiddle
Example of MERGE:
CREATE TABLE logs (
id NUMBER GENERATED BY DEFAULT AS IDENTITY (START WITH 1) NOT NULL
, text VARCHAR2(20) UNIQUE
, q int DEFAULT 1
);
INSERT INTO logs (text) VALUES ('A');
INSERT INTO logs (text) VALUES ('B');
INSERT INTO logs (text) VALUES ('C');
MERGE INTO logs USING (SELECT 'B' AS text FROM dual) cte ON (cte.text = logs.text)
WHEN MATCHED THEN UPDATE SET logs.q = logs.q + 1
WHEN NOT MATCHED THEN INSERT (logs.text)
VALUES (cte.text)
;
Result:
and now we can do this for several existing rows and new rows at once:
MERGE INTO logs USING (
SELECT text FROM logs WHERE text > 'A' UNION
SELECT 'Z' FROM dual
) cte ON (cte.text = logs.text)
WHEN MATCHED THEN UPDATE SET logs.q = logs.q + 1
WHEN NOT MATCHED THEN INSERT (logs.text)
VALUES (cte.text)
;
New Result:
This example will either INSERT a new row when the rows in cte do not exist in logs, and UPDATE any existing rows in logs when matches are found, by incrementing q.
I have a table named WORD with the following columns
WORD_INDEX INT NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT,
CONTENT VARCHAR(255),
FREQUENCY INT
What I want to do is when I try to add a row to the table if a row with the same CONTENT exits, I want to increment the FREQUENCY by 1. Otherwise I want to add the row to the table. And then the WORD_INDEX in the newly inserted row or updated row must be returned.
I want to do this in H2 database from one query.
I have tried 'on duplicate key update', but this seems to be not working in H2.
PS- I can do this with 1st making a select query with CONTENT and if I get a empty result set, makeing insert query and otherwise making a update query. But as I have a very large number of words, I am trying to optimize the insert operation. So what I am trying to do is reducing the database interactions I am making.
Per your edited question .. you can achieve this using a stored procedure like below [A sample code]
DELIMITER $$
create procedure sp_insert_update_word(IN CONTENT_DATA VARCHAR(255),
IN FREQ INT, OUT Insert_Id INT)
as
begin
declare #rec_count int;
select #rec_count = count(*) from WORD where content = CONTENT_DATA;
IF(#rec_count > 0) THEN
UPDATE WORD SET FREQUENCY = FREQUENCY + 1 where CONTENT = CONTENT_DATA;
SELECT NULL INTO Insert_Id;
else
INSERT INTO WORD(CONTENT, FREQUENCY) VALUES(CONTENT_DATA, FREQ);
SELECT LAST_INSERT_ID() INTO Insert_Id;
END IF;
END$$
DELIMITER ;
Then call your procedure and select the returned inserted id like below
CALL sp_insert_update_word('some_content_data', 3, #Insert_Id);
SELECT #Insert_Id;
The above procedure code essentially just checking that, if the same content already exists then perform an UPDATE otherwise perform an INSERT. Finally return the newly generated auto increment ID if it's insert else return null.
First try to update frequency where content = "your submitted data here". If the affected row = 0 then insert a new row. You also might want make CONTENT unique considering it will always stored different data.
I need to write a trigger based on the following condition
Before inserting a record in the table, I need to compare the value of one column to the existing records, and if records found then I need to delete those records having same column value in the already existing records, and then need to insert that new record.
Please let me know how to achieve this.
Thanks
CREATE TRIGGER [dbo].[CustomInsert_Trigger] ON [dbo].[Realtimebookingcount]
INSTEAD OF INSERT AS
BEGIN
DECLARE #Flag INT
SELECT #Flag = Booking_NUM FROM inserted
IF (SELECT COUNT(1) FROM Realtimebookingcount
WHERE Booking_NUM = #Flag) > 0
BEGIN
DELETE FROM Realtimebookingcount
WHERE Realtimebookingcount.Booking_NUM = #Flag
END
INSERT INTO Realtimebookingcount
SELECT * FROM inserted
END
I use this code to check if an element of the new entry is equal to an element of previously inserted data.
CREATE TRIGGER trig1 ON Table1
AFTER INSERT
AS
DECLARE trigcursor CURSOR FOR
SELECT Name FROM INSERTED
DECLARE #Name1 varchar(80)
OPEN trigcursor;
FETCH NEXT FROM trigcursor INTO #Name1
WHILE ##FETCH_STATUS = 0
BEGIN
IF EXISTS(SELECT * FROM Table1 WHERE Name= #Name1)
BEGIN
...
END
FETCH NEXT FROM trigcursor INTO #Name1
END
The problem is that for some reason the new entry exists also in the table Table1, not only in INSERTED. So the condition is always true. Can you help me why this happens? Is there a way to retrieve only the initial table without the new entry in it? Thanks!
Your trigger is AFTER INSERT on table Table1. It should be BEFORE INSERT if you expect not to find the record in the table.
Alternative: use INSTEAD OF INSERT trigger.
OR
Add another column that accepts null. Make it a number column so that it will be fast. Do not insert any value in it on the insert. Then, in the AFTER INSERT TRIGGER, the rows that have that column empty are the new ones. The ones that have the column filled with something are the old ones.
Then update empty columns with value.
eg: add column mark
After insert, look for the name:
SELECT * FROM Table1 WHERE Name= #Name1 and mark is not null
Once you found out whether or not it existed before, update everything with something:
update table1 set mark = 1 where mark is null
If there's:
IF UPDATE (col1)
...in the SQL server trigger on a table, does it return true only if col1 has been changed or been updated?
I have a regular update query like
UPDATE table-name
SET col1 = 'x',
col2 = 'y'
WHERE id = 999
Now what my concern is if the "col1" was 'x' previously then again we updated it to 'x'
would IF UPDATE ("col1") trigger return True or not?
I am facing this problem as my save query is generic for all columns, but when I add this condition it returns True even if it's not changed...So I am concerned what to do in this case if I want to add condition like that?
It returns true if a column was updated. An update means that the query has SET the value of the column. Whether the previous value was the same as the new value is largely irelevant.
UPDATE table SET col = col
it's an update.
UPDATE table SET col = 99
when the col already had value 99 also it's an update.
Within the trigger, you have access to two internal tables that may help. The 'inserted' table includes the new version of each affected row, The 'deleted' table includes the original version of each row. You can compare the values in these tables to see if your field value was actually changed.
Here's a quick way to scan the rows to see if ANY column changed before deciding to run the contents of a trigger. This can be useful for example when you want to write a history record, but you don't want to do it if nothing really changed.
We use this all the time in ETL importing processes where we may re-import data but if nothing really changed in the source file we don't want to create a new history record.
CREATE TRIGGER [dbo].[TR_my_table_create_history]
ON [dbo].[my_table] FOR UPDATE AS
BEGIN
--
-- Insert the old data row if any column data changed
--
INSERT INTO [my_table_history]
SELECT d.*
FROM deleted d
INNER JOIN inserted i ON i.[id] = d.[id]
--
-- Use INTERSECT to see if anything REALLY changed
--
WHERE NOT EXISTS( SELECT i.* INTERSECT SELECT d.* )
END
Note that this particular trigger assumes that your source table (the one triggering the trigger) and the history table have identical column layouts.
What you do is check for different values in the inserted and deleted tables rather than use updated() (Don't forget to account for nulls). Or you could stop doing unneeded updates.
Trigger:
CREATE TRIGGER boo ON status2 FOR UPDATE AS
IF UPDATE (id)
BEGIN
SELECT 'DETECT';
END;
Usage:
UPDATE status2 SET name = 'K' WHERE name= 'T' --no action
UPDATE status2 SET name = 'T' ,id= 8 WHERE name= 'K' --detect
To shortcut the "No actual update" case, you need also check at the beginning whether your query affected any rows at all:
set nocount on; -- this must be the first statement!
if not exists (select 1 from inserted) and not exists (select 1 from deleted)
return;
SET NOCOUNT ON;
declare #countTemp int
select #countTemp = Count (*) from (
select City,PostCode,Street,CountryId,Address1 from Deleted
union
select City,PostCode,Street,CountryId,Address1 from Inserted
) tempTable
IF ( #countTemp > 1 )
Begin
-- Your Code goes Here
End
-- if any of these "City,PostCode,Street,CountryId,Address1" got updated then trigger
-- will work in " IF ( #countTemp > 1 ) " Code)
This worked for me
DECLARE #LongDescDirty bit = 0
Declare #old varchar(4000) = (SELECT LongDescription from deleted)
Declare #new varchar(4000) = (SELECT LongDescription from inserted)
if (#old <> #new)
BEGIN
SET #LongDescDirty = 1
END
Update table
Set LongDescUpdated = #LongDescUpdated
.....
